Best Tools for Finding and Refactoring Problematic TypeScript Identifiers

Use TypeScript-aware symbol rename for identifier changes and lint rules for recurring patterns. Here’s how to review edits, keep project configuration aligned, and avoid confusing symbol and file renames.

For a TypeScript identifier that needs to change, use an editor’s TypeScript language-service rename rather than a plain text replacement. In Visual Studio Code, place the cursor on the symbol and use F2 (Rename Symbol); inspect the proposed changes before accepting. For recurring naming or code-quality patterns, add TypeScript-aware lint rules: a linter reports configured patterns, while semantic rename updates references to a particular symbol.

Which tool should you use?

What you need Best-fit tool What to check
Rename a symbol and update its references An editor integrated with the TypeScript language service, such as Visual Studio Code Project coverage, symbol awareness, preview options, and TypeScript project setup. VS Code documents symbol rename and refactoring in its refactoring guide and TypeScript refactoring guide.
Find and inspect occurrences Editor reference search and navigation Check whether the search covers the relevant project files and how it treats generated files, declarations, comments, and strings. The cited VS Code documentation covers symbol rename, but does not establish a cross-editor comparison of reference-search behavior.
Catch repeated naming or code-quality patterns A TypeScript-aware linter, such as typescript-eslint Choose rules relevant to the project and consider whether they need type information. The typescript-eslint rules documentation says its plugin includes over 100 TypeScript-specific rules for best practices, bugs, and stylistic issues; the enabled rules determine what gets reported.
Move or rename a source file while preserving imports An editor with TypeScript file-operation support Review updated paths, especially across path aliases, package boundaries, and monorepos. VS Code documents automatic import-path updates for files referenced elsewhere in the TypeScript project.

Rename a TypeScript symbol safely

  1. Open the repository as a workspace. Confirm the editor recognizes the relevant TypeScript project and configuration; semantic operations depend on the project context.
  2. Inspect the symbol’s uses. Place the cursor on the identifier and use reference search or navigation to review its occurrences. This helps surface public exports, package boundaries, and generated or declaration files that may deserve extra attention.
  3. Run semantic rename. In VS Code, place the cursor on the symbol and press F2, or invoke Rename Symbol from the editor. This is a symbol-aware operation, not a general replacement of matching text.
  4. Review the preview before applying. VS Code documents a Refactor Preview panel that lets you inspect the proposed diff, accept or discard it, or selectively apply parts. Check changes to exported names and public APIs particularly carefully.
  5. Run the repository’s usual checks. Use the project’s normal build, type-check, lint, and test commands after applying the edit. The relevant commands vary by repository, so do not assume a universal command.

Use linting to detect recurring patterns

A semantic rename answers, “Where does this symbol refer, and how can its name change consistently?” A lint rule answers, “Which code patterns should this project report?” Use the latter when you want repeatable checks for naming conventions or other configured issues, and choose rules that match the project rather than enabling rules indiscriminately. See the typescript-eslint rules reference for the available TypeScript-specific rule set.

Keep typed linting aligned with the TypeScript project

Typed linting uses TypeScript project information, so files being linted need to belong to the intended project configuration. The typescript-eslint typed-linting guide explains project-service setup and troubleshooting when a file falls outside the configured project. It also notes that restarting the editor server may be a workaround when type information becomes stale in an editor.

TypeScript supports language-service plugins, which can extend editor behavior. Its TSConfig plugins documentation gives typescript-eslint-language-service as an example for showing ESLint messages and fixes in compiler output. A plugin complements editor and lint configuration; it does not make project setup irrelevant.

Do not confuse a file rename with a symbol rename

Renaming an identifier changes a symbol and its references. Renaming or moving a file changes the file path and may require updating import paths. VS Code’s TypeScript documentation says it can automatically update import paths that refer to a moved or renamed file. Review those edits too, particularly when the project uses path aliases or spans multiple packages. For details, see VS Code’s TypeScript refactoring documentation.

Choosing among editors and integrations

The available documentation supports recommending TypeScript language-service refactoring in VS Code and TypeScript-aware linting with typescript-eslint, but it does not establish a tested ranking across VS Code, WebStorm, Neovim integrations, or other editors. Compare alternatives against your own needs: whether the editor recognizes all relevant project files, offers a reviewable rename, integrates with the team’s lint rules, and works with the repository’s TypeScript configuration. Feature details can change; consult each tool’s official documentation for its current behavior.
