If you want true color, consider a ZINK model such as the HPRT Z1; if you want better photographic color, the dye-sublimation HPRT Z3 is a more suitable alternative.

What a thermal print camera actually is
A direct-thermal camera heats a coated roll of paper at precise points. The coating darkens where the print head contacts it, so there are no ink cartridges, ribbons or wet chemicals. The result is usually a small, high-contrast black-and-white image.

Direct thermal
This is the inexpensive receipt-like process used by the Insta 20, Insta 2 and Insta Wi. Paper is commonly sold in rolls, sometimes with a sticker backing. It is the right technology for frequent journaling, decorating and party printing, not for detailed photographs.
Color-burst thermal
Specially treated paper can add selected colors. The Insta 20 supports myFirst paper described as black plus blue, red or orange effects. This is a tint or limited-color treatment, not natural full-color photography.
ZINK
ZINK paper contains embedded color-forming crystals. The HPRT Z1 is therefore an inkless color camera, but it is not a conventional monochrome thermal camera; its proprietary sheets generally cost more than direct-thermal rolls. Dye sublimation and instant film
Dye-sublimation systems heat color layers into the paper and normally deliver stronger color and detail. Instax and Polaroid cameras use chemically developed film instead. Both are different buying categories from direct thermal.

Its product page lists a 2MP camera with interpolated output modes up to a claimed 16MP. Interpolation enlarges the saved file; it does not create the detail of a native 16MP sensor. The camera’s paper is advertised by myFirst as BPA- and BPS-free, a claim specific to that supplied product.
Choose it if: you want the easiest all-round family camera, video, a larger preview screen and optional limited-color paper. Skip it if: you need archival prints, natural color or an adult-looking body.

Best multifunction option: myFirst Insta Wi

How good are the prints?
Expect small, monochrome, high-contrast images with limited detail. Fine textures, shadows, skin tones and dim scenes often collapse into pale or dark blocks. The digital file saved to the camera or card can look considerably better than the paper copy.
Do not rank these cameras by a headline “12MP” or “16MP” number alone. Check whether the manufacturer discloses native sensor resolution, focus behavior, lighting performance and whether originals are saved. The Insta 20’s explicit 2MP-to-16MP interpolation is a useful warning about inflated output figures.

Calculate running cost as:
cost per print = refill price ÷ printable sheets
Then include wasted prints, shipping, sticker-backed paper and whether the refill is a roll or pre-cut sheet. Phomemo says some thermal paper can cost below $0.10 per print, but that is a manufacturer estimate, not a universal market price: Phomemo’s comparison.
Use refills specified for the camera. Similar-looking rolls can differ in width, diameter, winding direction and coating chemistry, causing blank or faint images, jams or rapid fading. Ordinary receipt paper is not automatically safe or compatible. Check the manual for exact dimensions and material.

Thermal prints are creative or journaling media, not guaranteed archival photographs. Heat, sunlight, friction, solvents and reactive plastics can darken or fade them. Store prints and unused rolls cool and dark, preserve important digital originals, and scan or photograph especially meaningful prints. An anecdotal report of flaking with one refill illustrates why paper quality matters, but it does not establish a failure rate for all products: user report.
Digital storage and everyday usability
Before buying, verify whether the camera can save files without printing, whether a microSD card is required, the supported capacity, video recording, USB transfer and any phone-app requirement. Both documented myFirst models support cards up to 32GB.
- Preview: A preview-before-print workflow saves paper; automatic printing can consume a roll quickly.
- Ergonomics: Large buttons, a readable screen and an easy paper door matter more to children than megapixels.
- Adult use: Many products add games, music, cartoon frames and toy-like menus. Serious adult-looking direct-thermal cameras remain uncommon, as community discussions indicate: r/ThermalPrintCameras.
Age, safety and paper handling
Age labels are handling guidance, not independent safety certification. Younger children need supervision around paper rolls, sticker backing, lanyards and small accessories. A lanyard should never be used in a way that could wrap around a child’s neck. Check for a protective case, charging condition and whether games or music can be disabled.
BPA-free or BPS-free is a product-specific claim. myFirst makes that claim for the Insta 20’s paper; it should not be generalized to generic refills. Buy the specified paper unless the manufacturer confirms another roll’s dimensions and chemistry.

Troubleshooting blank, faint or failed prints
- Stop repeatedly pressing Print; repeated commands can worsen a jam or waste paper.
- Open the compartment and confirm the heat-sensitive side faces the print head and the roll feeds in the indicated direction.
- Check that the roll width and diameter match the manual and that the compartment is not overfilled.
- Recharge the camera if the motor stalls, printing stops midway or the image is unusually faint.
- Remove and reload the roll if the camera reports “no paper.” Try the supplied roll before third-party refills.
- For faint output, check print-density settings, paper quality and battery level. The Insta 20 manual documents a print-density shortcut.
- Clean the thermal path only as the manual instructs; do not scrape the print head or introduce solvents.
- If the camera still jams or prints blank images with known-compatible paper, use the manufacturer’s warranty or replacement process.

- Confirm microSD capacity, video, USB transfer and phone-app requirements.
