For text baked into a photo, choose Adobe Firefly to brush over the lettering and generate replacement background, Canva Grab Text to isolate lettering for deletion in a supported Canva design workflow, or Photoshop for selection, fill and layer controls. They use different methods, so there is no evidence-backed universal winner; the right choice depends on the image, the result you need and where you want to edit.
What these text remover tools do
These tools address lettering that is part of an image, not editable text in a design file. Firefly and Photoshop can generate or fill replacement pixels where text was. Canva Grab Text is described as extracting the lettering so you can delete it while leaving the background unchanged. Their different approaches matter: removing the letters is not the same as reconstructing what was behind them.

How to remove text from a photo without leaving a mark
Start with the tool whose method fits the image. A clean, simple background is easier to reconstruct than a detailed scene with edges, repeating patterns or important texture. No tool guarantees an invisible repair on every image. After applying a change, inspect the result at actual size; if the repair looks wrong, refine the selection or try another fill method.

Use Adobe Firefly for a quick generated fill
- Open Firefly in a browser and upload the photo.
- Brush over the text you want removed. Adobe recommends a precise selection on complex imagery; on simpler backgrounds, a broader selection may be suitable.
- Click Generate, then review the result. Refine the selection or generate again if edges or background details look incorrect.
- Download the result when you are satisfied. Adobe says uploads retain their original dimensions and common image formats are supported.
Adobe explains that Generative Remove creates new content suited to the surrounding image, unlike a healing brush that clones nearby pixels. That distinction can help when a copied patch would look unnatural, but the generated area still needs inspection. See Adobe’s Firefly workflow and guidance.
Use Canva Grab Text to extract lettering
Canva describes Grab Text as isolating and extracting text from an image so it can be deleted without changing the background or image quality. It is an option for supported Canva design workflows, such as updating a caption or label. Canva says the feature works online without downloading software, but it is not available in Videos, Docs or the Photo Editor. Check Canva’s feature details.

Use Photoshop when you want fill and layer controls
Photoshop has several relevant options rather than one single text-removal feature. Content-Aware Fill replaces a selection using surrounding pixels and lets you adjust the sampling area. Delete and Fill Selection automatically removes a selection and fills it to match the surrounding image.
For Generative Fill, Adobe’s tutorial demonstrates making a selection, optionally expanding it to leave a buffer around the object, and clicking Generate; a prompt is not required for removal. Photoshop creates three variations, and another generation can create three more. The generated replacement sits on its own layer with a mask, which you can disable or delete to restore the underlying image. Adobe Learning team instructor Jan Kabili says Generative Fill “often gives you the best results, particularly when you’re trying to remove something large”; that is her guidance in Adobe’s tutorial, not an independent comparison.

- Make a selection around the text and, if needed, expand it to include a small buffer.
- Choose Generative Fill and click Generate without entering a prompt for a removal-only attempt.
- Review the generated variations. Generate again if needed, then inspect the layer and mask before keeping the result.

Choose based on the job
- Want a browser-based generative repair? Try Firefly, especially if you want to brush over text and review a generated replacement.
- Want the lettering isolated rather than a generated background? Try Canva Grab Text in a supported design workflow.
- Need multiple fill methods and reversible layer edits? Photoshop provides generative and pixel-based options, including a separate generative layer and mask for Generative Fill.
- Have detailed imagery or repeating patterns? Make a careful selection and inspect edges, texture and nearby details. Compare another variation or fill method if the repair is noticeable.
Availability, rights and uploads
Adobe says Firefly can be used with an Adobe account; free users receive free daily generations, while paid plans provide additional generative credits and advanced features. The reviewed feature page does not establish a stable exact allowance or price, so check Adobe’s current plan information before relying on a specific amount. Do not remove a watermark from an image unless you own it or have explicit rights to modify it. Adobe warns that removal from images you do not own, or where license terms prohibit modification, may violate copyright law. Canva likewise warns that watermarks can signal copyrighted material and that unauthorized removal is generally considered illegal. These are general cautions, not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
