Start with a foundation course, add programming basics if needed, then choose one course for your actual target—web UI, APIs, mobile, or codeless testing. There is no evidence-backed universal ranking of TAU courses, and a course listing alone cannot tell you which one will lead to better job outcomes.
How to choose a TAU course
- Choose the work you want to do. Decide whether you need browser or web UI tests, API tests, mobile testing, or an introduction to automation without coding. Those categories also appear in Applitools’ historical 2020 guide to TAU learning paths.
- Match the course to your language and experience. If you are new to programming, learn the language before taking a framework-specific course. If you already work in a language or test stack, prioritize courses that use it.
- Take foundations before collecting tools. A course on automation principles can help you understand what to automate and how to approach test design. Add tool-specific and engineering-practice courses only when they fit your work.
- Check the current course page. Listings, duration, content, and prerequisites can change. Use the live TAU course page to confirm what a course currently covers before committing.
Applitools’ April 17, 2020 learning-path article is useful for its navigation idea—begin with basics, then select by test type and language—but its sample sequences are historical, not a confirmed current curriculum.

Good starting courses by learner goal
The courses below are representative options shown in the catalog indexed by Class Central. Its current listing reports 78 TAU courses, labels all 78 free, and categorizes 68 as beginner, 3 as intermediate, and 7 as advanced. Those are aggregator listings, not a permanent price guarantee or official TAU promise. Confirm availability and any access terms on the course page.

|---|---|---|---|
| Get oriented before specializing | Setting a Foundation for Successful Test Automation | 47 minutes | A short foundations option before choosing a specific framework. |
| Learn API testing concepts | Exploring Service APIs through Test Automation | 1 hour 17 minutes | An introduction to exploring service APIs through automation. |
| Automate REST APIs with Java | Automating your API tests with REST Assured | 1 hour | A focused choice if REST Assured and Java fit your work. |
| Start testing in Python | Introduction to pytest | 1 hour 30 minutes | The listing describes test cases, parameterization, fixtures, configuration, filtering, and plugins for API and UI testing. |
| Improve browser locator choices | Web Element Locator Strategies | 1 hour 17 minutes | Relevant when your web tests depend on selecting elements reliably. |
| Use TestNG | Introduction to TestNG | 1 hour 56 minutes | A framework-specific option for learners whose Java testing stack uses TestNG. |
| Use Selenium with .NET Core | Intro to Selenium WebDriver with .NET Core | 45 minutes | A short, stack-specific introduction for .NET Core learners. |
| Build programming fundamentals in Java | Java Programming | 5 hours 55 minutes | A longer starting point if you need Java basics before a Java automation framework. |
The durations and course details in this table reflect the Class Central catalog listing; they can change. A short duration does not establish course quality or prove that a course is enough to use a tool confidently.

Suggested course sequences
If you are new to test automation
- Take Setting a Foundation for Successful Test Automation.
- If you are also new to coding, take a programming course in the language you intend to use; for Java, the catalog lists Java Programming.
- Select one course for your target stack, such as Introduction to pytest, Introduction to TestNG, or Intro to Selenium WebDriver with .NET Core.
- Apply what you learned in a small test project before adding another framework course.
If your target is API testing
- Choose Exploring Service APIs through Test Automation if you want an API concepts introduction.
- Choose Automating your API tests with REST Assured if REST Assured is the tool you need.
- Take a language course first if you lack the programming foundation for the framework you selected.
The sequence is a fit-based suggestion, not a verified current TAU learning path. Applitools’ 2020 example Java API path included foundations, API courses, Java programming, and shared courses, but the article noted that paths would change.
If you work on a team or need broader engineering context
After a course tied to your immediate task, consider The Whole Team Approach to Continuous Testing for team practice, Scaling Tests with Docker for scaling context, or Testing From The Inside: Unit Testing Edition for unit-test context. The catalog listing gives respective durations of 1 hour 3 minutes, 31 minutes, and 2 hours 25 minutes. These are optional extensions, not prerequisites for every automation learner.

What the course catalog can—and cannot—tell you
The Class Central provider listing is a useful way to scan course titles, broad levels, and estimated lengths. It reports duration filters of 19 courses at 30–60 minutes, 40 at 1–2 hours, 16 at 2–5 hours, and 2 at 5–10 hours. These are catalog counts, not evidence about completion, teaching quality, or learner outcomes.
TAU’s instructor directory lists practitioners including Angie Jones, described there as a Principal Automation Architect focused on automation strategy and techniques, and Andrew Knight, described as an automation-focused developer advocate with test-automation project experience. Instructor biographies can help you identify a subject match; they do not establish that one course is superior.
Rank #3
The reviewed evidence does not include a comparative outcomes study that would justify ranking TAU courses by effectiveness, employability, or real-project impact. Treat course fit, current course descriptions, and your chance to practice as more useful selection criteria than a universal “best” label.
Making the learning practical
- Choose a small, real task from your own application or a practice site, rather than taking several framework courses in sequence without using them.
- For UI automation, pay attention to locator strategy and test stability. For APIs, focus on request/response behavior and the cases your product needs to handle.
- Use broader topics such as Docker, continuous testing, visual testing, unit testing, or performance testing when your role or project needs them; they are not mandatory add-ons for everyone.
- Budget time to write, run, and debug tests. A listed video duration is not a measure of the practice time needed to apply its ideas.
If you want a separate hands-on Cypress resource, Cypress’s Real World Testing with Cypress is an external learning resource, not a TAU course; its page lists four courses and practical end-to-end testing topics.

A screenshot tool for browser-test work
Courses teach testing concepts and tools; a screenshot API is not a substitute for that instruction. If your browser-test workflow also needs captured page evidence, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures, and its clean-shot options accept consent banners and remove supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.
Its MCP server provides screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents. If useful for your project, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Bottom line
Choose one course sequence around your next practical task: foundations, programming basics if needed, then a single relevant UI, API, or framework course. Use catalog duration and instructor background as context, not as proof of quality, and verify each course’s current description and availability before enrolling.
