Best TCL QM6K Settings for GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the TCL QM6K’s Game Master/Game picture mode, enable VRR and automatic low-latency switching, and turn off motion processing. On PS5, select Automatic 2160p output, 120 Hz Output and VRR (Automatic), with HDR set to “On When Supported.” On Xbox Series X, choose 4K UHD and 120 Hz, then enable Allow 4K, HDR10 and VRR/FreeSync when the console confirms compatibility. Finish by running each console’s HDR calibration while the TV is in HDR Game mode.

These are launch settings, not a GTA 6 performance test. No official GTA 6-specific frame-rate target, HDR behavior or QM6K input-lag measurement has been published, so treat the configuration as a technically sound baseline and recalibrate if Rockstar’s final implementation behaves differently.

Recommended TCL QM6K baseline

The fastest route to a responsive GTA 6 setup is to let the TV expose its gaming features and let the console perform the HDR calibration. Avoid copying a long list of picture-slider values from another television: RTINGS describes its published settings as a starting point, because panel variation, room lighting and firmware can change the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting area Recommended starting point Why it matters
Picture mode Game mode, through Game Master if that is how your firmware labels it Minimizes processing and input delay
Refresh and latency VRR enabled; automatic low-latency behavior (ALLM) enabled where exposed Keeps refresh synchronized with a fluctuating game frame rate and switches to the low-lag mode automatically
Motion processing Off Prevents interpolation from adding delay or creating artifacts
HDR Use the TV’s HDR Game mode, then run the console’s HDR calibration Aligns the console’s output with the QM6K’s tone mapping instead of relying on default values
GTA 6-specific adjustments None are officially established yet Final HDR and performance behavior for the game has not been documented

Leave contrast, color and gamma at their calibrated defaults unless you have a measured reason to change them. A setting that looks brighter in a shop can clip highlights or lift black levels in a dark room.

What Game Master and Game mode actually do

Choose the gaming picture mode first

On the QM6K, select Game mode; some firmware versions present gaming controls through Game Master. The important outcome is that the TV uses its low-latency picture path. RTINGS recommends this mode for the lowest input lag and cautions that its numerical values should not be copied blindly between sets.

Switching to Filmmaker, Standard or another cinematic preset after calibration changes the processing and tone curve. If you want to watch a film, change modes deliberately, but return to HDR Game before playing.

Enable VRR and ALLM

VRR allows the display refresh to follow the console’s delivered frame rate instead of refreshing at a fixed interval. That reduces tearing and can make uneven performance look smoother. ALLM, when available in the TV and console handshake, lets the system request the low-latency mode automatically. Enable both, then verify that the console reports them; an icon or menu entry on one device alone is not proof that the HDMI connection negotiated the feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable motion interpolation and cinema processing

Turn off motion interpolation and other film-oriented enhancement controls for gameplay. Interpolation invents intermediate frames rather than displaying the console’s frames directly. It can add latency and produce halos around moving objects, which is especially distracting during rapid camera movement. Noise reduction and similar processing should also remain off unless a specific source problem requires them.

PS5: exact settings for 4K, 120 Hz, VRR and HDR

Make the TV’s game mode active before opening the PS5 menus. Then configure the console as follows.

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video.
  2. Under video output, leave resolution on Automatic so the PS5 can select the QM6K’s 2160p (4K) mode.
  3. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic or enabled, depending on the wording shown by the console.
  4. Set VRR to Automatic.
  5. Set HDR to On When Supported. This avoids forcing SDR games and menus through an HDR conversion.
  6. Use the PS5’s test and information screens to check 1440p, HDR, 60/120 Hz and VRR detection. Sony says the console can test those capabilities after it detects the television.
  7. When the game is running, open the PS5 video-output information again and confirm that the active signal is 4K and 120 Hz when the title and HDMI path support those values. A game that renders below 120 frames per second can still use a 120 Hz output mode; the output refresh rate is not a promise about the game’s internal frame rate.

What the PS5 should report

RTINGS reports full QM6K compatibility with PS5 4K/120, 1440p/120 and HDMI Forum VRR. If the PS5 does not expose one of those choices, first check the cable and the selected TV input, then power-cycle both devices so they renegotiate HDMI capabilities. Do not assume that a 4K picture means 120 Hz is active; verify both values in the console’s information panel.

Run HDR calibration after selecting HDR Game

With the TV receiving an HDR signal, select its HDR Game picture mode before opening the PS5 HDR adjustment screens. Follow the console’s on-screen pattern instructions rather than judging the game’s brightness from a paused scene. The calibration is specific to the TV’s current mode, so repeat it if you later create a different HDR picture preset or substantially change the QM6K’s tone-mapping controls.

  1. Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
  2. Set the display resolution to 4K UHD.
  3. Set the refresh rate to 120 Hz when the option is available.
  4. Open the 4K TV details or compatibility screen. Confirm that the console recognizes 4K, 120 Hz and HDR capability rather than relying on the menu selection alone.
  5. Enable Allow 4K.
  6. Enable HDR10 and VRR or FreeSync when the compatibility screen confirms them.
  7. Run Calibrate HDR for Games while the QM6K is in HDR Game mode. Complete every pattern step; do not use a brighter Standard-mode picture as the reference.

Xbox compatibility reported for the QM6K

RTINGS reports full compatibility with Xbox Series X|S 4K/120, VRR, FreeSync Premium Pro and Dolby Vision gaming. That describes the television and its supported signal formats, not a guarantee that GTA 6 will use Dolby Vision or sustain 120 frames per second. The game’s final output options determine which format is actually selected.

When Dolby Vision appears

If the Xbox offers Dolby Vision gaming for a supported title, leave it enabled only if the game and your preferred HDR calibration produce a better result. GTA 6-specific Dolby Vision behavior has not been documented, so HDR10 remains the explicit format to verify in the Xbox settings. Do not force a format simply because the TV is capable of decoding it.

HDR, tone mapping and the HGiG question

Start with HDR Game, not a bright showroom preset

The QM6K’s HDR Game mode is the correct starting point because the console calibration patterns are designed to be viewed through the active HDR path. A brighter preset can make clouds, headlights or sunlit surfaces look impressive while clipping detail at the top of the signal range. Calibration should establish the reference; room-light preferences can be adjusted afterward in small increments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What HGiG can and cannot tell you

HGiG is a tone-mapping approach used by some televisions and games, but the available QM6K information does not establish a universal HGiG switch or a GTA 6 HGiG recommendation. If your firmware exposes an HGiG option, use it only when the console’s HDR calibration and the game’s own HDR implementation are designed for that workflow. If the option is absent, do not substitute a similarly named dynamic-contrast control. Use HDR Game plus the console calibration instead.

Recalibrate after the game’s final HDR behavior is known

No official GTA 6-specific HDR curve, paper-white target or peak-brightness requirement is available yet. The correct launch practice is to calibrate the console with the TV in HDR Game, play with dynamic tone controls unchanged, and revisit the calibration if Rockstar or a reliable technical analysis documents a different HDR target. This is more defensible than publishing a fixed slider recipe for a game whose retail HDR implementation has not been measured.

QM6K performance and signal capability

The following figures describe independent measurements of the television, not GTA 6. Keep the test mode and date attached to each number when using them to set expectations.

Characteristic Reported result Qualification
Game-mode input lag 13.1 ms TechRadar measurement, 2025; television result, not a GTA 6 latency test
HDR peak brightness 559.8 nits TechRadar measurement in Filmmaker mode, 2025
HDR peak brightness 695.5 nits TechRadar measurement in Standard mode, 2025
Panel refresh 120 Hz native TechRadar, 2025
Variable refresh Up to 144 Hz VRR TechRadar, 2025; the actual rate depends on the source and negotiated signal
PlayStation support 4K/120, 1440p/120 and HDMI Forum VRR RTINGS compatibility report
Xbox support 4K/120, VRR, FreeSync Premium Pro and Dolby Vision gaming RTINGS compatibility report for Xbox Series X|S

The two brightness measurements are not contradictory: they were taken in different picture modes. They also are not a promise that every scene will reach those values. HDR tone mapping, window size, content and the selected mode all affect what you see.

HDMI setup and verification checklist

4K/120 and VRR depend on the complete HDMI chain. The console, cable, TV input and current picture-mode handshake must all agree. Before troubleshooting game settings, check these basics:

Best Value
Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display | 85W Max PD, 1 Powered USB-C 5Gbps & 2 Powered USB-A 3.0 5Gbps Data Ports, for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Dell and More (Black)
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Connect the console directly to the TV while testing. Remove receivers, switches and capture devices that may advertise lower capabilities.
  • Use a cable rated for the bandwidth required by 4K/120 and VRR. If a cable works at 4K/60 but the 120 Hz option disappears, test another certified high-bandwidth cable.
  • After changing a cable or input, restart both the console and TV so capability information is exchanged again.
  • Verify the console’s reported signal, not just the TV’s input label. Confirm resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR separately.
  • Keep the TV in Game mode while checking input lag. Measuring or judging responsiveness in Filmmaker or Standard mode does not represent the recommended gaming path.

Troubleshooting by symptom

4K is available but 120 Hz is missing

  1. Confirm that the console is set to 120 Hz or Automatic rather than a fixed 60 Hz value.
  2. Check the console’s compatibility screen for a 120 Hz warning.
  3. Try another HDMI input and a known high-bandwidth cable, then restart both devices.
  4. Disconnect intermediate equipment while testing.
  5. If 120 Hz returns only after changing inputs, leave the console on the input that reports the full capability set and reconnect other equipment one item at a time.

VRR is selected but the console says it is unavailable

Make sure VRR is enabled on both devices and that the console is not locked to a mode that disables it. Recheck the compatibility screen after a full restart. A game’s own frame-rate mode can differ from the display’s VRR capability; the latter confirms the link, not the title’s use of it.

The image looks washed out or too dark in HDR

  1. Confirm that the TV is in HDR Game mode and that the console is actually outputting HDR.
  2. Run the PS5 HDR adjustment or Xbox Calibrate HDR for Games again.
  3. Check that HDR is not being forced for SDR content on PS5; On When Supported is the recommended setting.
  4. Return dynamic contrast and similar processing controls to their calibrated defaults before making a brightness judgment.

Input feels delayed despite Game mode

Check that motion interpolation and other cinema processing are off, and verify that the TV did not leave Game mode when the signal changed from SDR to HDR. The independent 13.1 ms Game-mode measurement is a television-level result; it cannot identify delay introduced by a wireless controller, the console’s game engine or the game’s display queue.

VRR causes flicker or brightness changes

First verify that the behavior occurs with the console directly connected and with a current TV mode. If the problem appears only in a narrow frame-rate range, compare the game’s fixed-refresh option with VRR to determine whether the issue is specific to the title. Do not disable HDR or alter multiple tone controls at once; change one variable, retest, and keep the setting that gives stable motion without sacrificing the calibrated image.

What is still unknown about GTA 6

There is no official GTA 6-specific QM6K calibration, measured frame-rate target or input-lag result established in the available material. The QM6K’s 4K/120 and VRR compatibility therefore describes what the display can accept, not what the game will render.

Until Rockstar publishes final performance and HDR details, avoid promising a particular quality/performance mode, a locked frame rate or a specific peak-brightness value. A launch patch can also change HDR metadata or frame pacing. Keep the TV and console baseline stable so any later comparison reflects the game update rather than a moving collection of picture settings.

How to judge another TV for the same console use

If you are deciding whether a different display is a better fit, compare the capabilities that affect actual play rather than relying on a single brightness headline.

Comparison axis Question to ask
4K/120 support Does the television accept 4K at 120 Hz from the specific PS5 or Xbox connection you will use?
VRR formats and range Does it support the console’s required VRR protocol, and over what refresh range?
HDR tone mapping Can you calibrate HDR predictably, and does the set offer a documented game-oriented tone-mapping path?
Game-mode input lag Is the measurement taken in the same resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode you plan to use?
Auto-detection and ALLM Does the TV switch reliably into its low-latency mode, and does the console’s compatibility screen confirm the handshake?

For the QM6K, the available measurements and compatibility reports make it a credible 4K/120 and VRR television for both consoles. They do not remove the need to verify your own cable path or establish how GTA 6 behaves after release.
