Best Tag-Team Fighting Games to Play Instead of 2XKO (2026)

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the closest substitute for 2XKO because both use two-character teams. Choose DRAGON BALL FighterZ or Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid if you prefer a three-character tag/support format, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising if you mainly want approachable practice tools, and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls if its distinct four-versus-four design is available in your region.

These games are not interchangeable. Team size, assist rules, input design, platforms and online support differ substantially, so the right replacement depends on whether you value a close 2v2 structure, anime presentation, cross-platform play or an easier way to learn fighting-game fundamentals.

What is happening with 2XKO?

2XKO is currently listed as free to play on PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Riot describes two ways to play: control both champions yourself in solo play, or form a duo with a friend. Its defining systems are tag and assist mechanics, which let partners enter and leave combat and support one another during a match. The official game page explains the current format at Riot’s 2XKO site.

Riot’s August 20, 2026 development notice says active development will end in December 2026. The same notice says servers will remain online and that gameplay content will be unlocked in September. Ending active development is not an announcement of an immediate shutdown, but it does mean the game’s roadmap and future support should be treated differently from those of an actively expanding live service. Read the notice at Riot’s development update before deciding how much time or money to invest.

1. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle — the closest 2v2 replacement

Why it is the best structural match

PlayStation calls BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle a fast-paced 2v2 team fighter and says it is designed for both experienced players and newcomers. That makes it the clearest format match for someone specifically replacing 2XKO’s two-character structure. You select two fighters, manage when each appears, and use team coordination rather than relying on a single character for an entire round.

The crossover roster combines characters from BlazBlue, Persona, Under Night In-Birth and RWBY. That gives the game a different tone from 2XKO’s League of Legends cast while preserving the appeal of a multi-series anime crossover. The official listing is at PlayStation’s BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle page.

What the source does—and does not—establish

The PlayStation description establishes the 2v2 format and its positioning for pros and newcomers. It does not establish that every tag, assist, resource or neutral mechanic works exactly like 2XKO. Treat it as a format substitute, not a one-to-one rules tutorial. If your priority is learning the precise timing and interaction rules of 2XKO, you will still need to practice those in 2XKO itself.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want two characters rather than a three- or four-character roster.
  • Players who enjoy crossover anime casts and want a direct team-fighter structure.
  • Newcomers who prefer a game explicitly presented as suitable for both beginners and experienced players.

Use the linked regional PlayStation page to check whether the edition and purchase format you need are currently available. Availability can differ by country, platform generation and storefront.

2. DRAGON BALL FighterZ — the polished 3v3 anime option

Why its tag system is compelling

Bandai Namco describes DRAGON BALL FighterZ as “easy to learn but difficult to master” and explicitly labels its central feature “3vs3 Tag/Support.” You build a three-character squad, call teammates for support and switch fighters during matches. Compared with a 2v2 game, the extra character creates more team-building choices and more assist combinations, but also gives you another moveset and matchup plan to learn.

The presentation is built around the Dragon Ball franchise’s high-speed battles. The official page also lists ranked matches, an interactive lobby and six-player Party Match, giving you several ways to play beyond standard one-on-one ranked sets. Those modes do not make it a 2v2 game; the team format remains three characters. See the current feature and edition information on Bandai Namco’s official page.

Platforms and editions

Bandai Namco’s listing names PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its store section displays physical and digital edition options. Which edition you can purchase, whether an upgrade is offered and whether stock exists depends on your platform, region and retailer at the time you check.

Who should choose it

  • Anime fans who want a fast, dramatic presentation and a large three-character team.
  • Players who enjoy building teams around assists, point characters and anchors.
  • Anyone who wants ranked play, a social lobby and a six-player Party Match option in addition to regular matches.

Choose FighterZ when three-character strategy is a benefit, not a problem. If you specifically want the smallest possible transition from 2XKO’s 2v2 structure, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the more direct choice.

3. Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid — 3v3 with cross-platform ambitions

Core format

The official Nintendo listing describes Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid as a 3v3 tag fighter with traditional fighting-game controls. You assemble a three-character team and use tag-ins and assists, so the basic decision loop will feel familiar to anyone looking for a team-based alternative. Its Power Rangers setting gives it a different roster identity from both 2XKO and anime crossover fighters.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls- PlayStation 5
  • Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
  • Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
  • Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
  • Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.

Cross-play and cross-progression

The developer’s official site describes cross-play and cross-progression across four console platforms and PC. That is a meaningful advantage for households or friend groups spread across different systems. It does not, by itself, prove that matchmaking is fast in your region; the reviewed official pages do not publish a comparable current population or queue-time figure.

Check the exact platform, edition and feature support before purchasing. The Nintendo listing is available at Nintendo’s product page, while the developer’s cross-platform information is at the official Battle for the Grid site.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want a 3v3 tag structure with conventional fighting-game controls.
  • Friends who need announced cross-play and cross-progression between console and PC ecosystems.
  • Power Rangers fans who value the license as much as mechanical similarity.

It is a sensible second choice when platform flexibility matters more than matching 2XKO’s team size. Confirm that your desired edition still includes the features you expect, because listings and regional availability can change.

4. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising — an accessible practice game, not a tag substitute

Why it belongs on this list

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is not a tag fighter: its core combat is one-on-one. It belongs here for readers whose real need is a welcoming fighting game while they wait, rather than a strict mechanical replacement. Cygames highlights simple inputs, story and arcade modes, training tools and an online lobby. Those features make it useful for learning spacing, anti-airs, frame awareness and matchup habits without first managing a team.

Platforms and release dates

Cygames lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. The original platform release was December 14, 2023; the Switch 2 release is listed as September 17, 2026. Verify the storefront in your country because platform availability and editions can differ. The official information is at Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising page.

When to pick it instead of a tag game

Choose Rising if you are new to fighting games, want structured solo content or need a training environment for fundamentals. Do not buy it expecting partner switches, assists or team health management. You will be learning transferable fighting-game skills, not practicing 2XKO’s tag-specific decisions.

5. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls — a different 4v4 concept

How its format differs

PlayStation’s June 2025 announcement identifies PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games as partners and describes MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls as a 4v4 team-versus fighting game. A later PlayStation feature reports that the game uses a shared team health bar. That means the team’s health is pooled rather than treating every character as an isolated life bar, a design that can let a player contribute without mastering every member of the roster.

This is not simply “2XKO with two extra characters.” Four-versus-four play and a shared health bar change how you evaluate assists, substitutions, risk and team composition. Director and lead battle designer Kazuto Sekine said in the June 4, 2025 interview, “From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,”. The statement describes the goal, not a guarantee that every player will find the system easy.

Availability caution

The official announcements establish a 2026 launch window for PS5, Steam and Epic. The reviewed pages do not establish a current region-specific store listing or confirm that it is playable everywhere at the time you read this. Check your local storefront and launch status before treating it as an immediately available purchase. Read the announcement at PlayStation’s June 2025 announcement and the format discussion at PlayStation’s 4v4 feature.

Who should watch it

  • Marvel fans who want a new team-based design rather than a conventional 2v2 clone.
  • Players intrigued by four-character teams and a shared team health bar.
  • People willing to verify launch timing and regional availability before committing.

How to choose the right 2XKO alternative

Start with team size

  1. Choose 2v2 if minimizing the structural change is your top priority. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is the clearest fit.
  2. Choose 3v3 if you want more team-building and assist options. FighterZ and Battle for the Grid both fit, with different rosters and platform policies.
  3. Choose 4v4 only if you specifically want a larger team design. Tōkon’s shared health bar makes it a distinct system, not a simple substitute.
  4. Choose one-on-one if your immediate goal is learning fundamentals with less cognitive load. Rising is the adjacent practice option.

Match the learning curve to your goal

  • For direct team-fighter practice, start with BlazBlue, FighterZ or Battle for the Grid.
  • For simpler onboarding and dedicated training tools, Rising offers the least team-management overhead.
  • For experimentation with a new team-health model, monitor Tōkon’s confirmed launch and try it when available.

Check your platform before buying

Make a short checklist before opening a store page:

Best Value
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics - PlayStation PS4
  • Experience your Favorite MARVEL vs. CAPCOM classics All in One – Enjoy 7 of your favorite classic titles that helped shaped the MARVEL vs. CAPCOM universe both single player and online.
  • To enhance your playability experience, we incorporated the favorite added features from Capcom Fighting Collection including gallery mode, quick save, training mode for all fighting titles, and the high score challenge.
  • This collection also includes rollback net code for a smooth and enjoyable experience online. Play casually or competitively through casual, ranked, or custom matches using rules of your choosing!
  • Is your system listed for the exact edition you intend to buy?
  • Does your region have the same release date and downloadable content?
  • Is cross-play explicitly supported for your platform combination, or is only cross-progression stated?
  • Do you need an older-generation version, a current-generation version or a PC edition?

Official platform lists are not a promise that every edition remains in stock or that every feature works identically across generations.

Separate network features from population claims

Rollback netcode, cross-play and cross-progression describe technical or account features. They do not establish how many people are online at a particular hour. Because no comparable owner-published population statistic was found for these games, avoid choosing solely on claims that a title is “the most active” or guarantees instant matchmaking. Your region, time zone, platform and skill bracket can matter more than a broad reputation.

Classic collections and what their online labels mean

Capcom’s announcement for Capcom Fighting Collection 2 says all eight included titles support online play with rollback netcode. That is useful if you are considering a collection for reliable online play, but it does not establish the same feature set for the separate Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection or for every game inside it. Keep the two collections separate when checking features and do not infer support from one product to the other. The announcement is at Capcom’s official release notice.

Practical buying and setup checklist

  1. Confirm the game’s current status. For 2XKO, distinguish Riot’s December 2026 end of active development from a server-shutdown announcement. For Tōkon, verify that the 2026 launch has occurred in your region.
  2. Confirm the team format. Do not assume a 3v3 game will teach the same habits as a 2v2 game, and do not mistake Rising’s one-on-one combat for tag play.
  3. Check your exact platform and edition. Read the linked first-party listing for your country, not only a general announcement.
  4. Test online features in your own conditions. Cross-play or rollback can help, but actual queue experience depends on region, time and skill level.
  5. Use training content deliberately. In a tag game, practice calling assists safely, switching without losing momentum and protecting a low-health partner. In Rising, use training mode to build the same fundamentals without team-management complexity.
  6. Choose the roster you will actually enjoy. Mechanical similarity matters, but a cast you like can determine whether you keep practicing long enough to improve.

Bottom line by player type

  • Closest 2XKO structure: BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle.
  • Best anime-style 3v3 choice: DRAGON BALL FighterZ.
  • Best announced cross-platform 3v3 option: Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, subject to current edition and regional checks.
  • Best low-pressure fundamentals practice: Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, with the understanding that it is one-on-one.
  • Most distinct team experiment: MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, once your region confirms availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is any game here exactly the same as 2XKO?

No. BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle matches the 2v2 team size, while FighterZ and Battle for the Grid use 3v3 teams. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is one-on-one, and MARVEL Tōkon uses a distinct 4v4 design with a shared team health bar.

Does 2XKO shut down when active development ends?

Riot’s August 20, 2026 notice says active development ends in December 2026 and that servers remain online. That is not an announcement of an immediate shutdown; check Riot’s notice for later changes.

Which listed games support cross-play?

The Battle for the Grid developer site describes cross-play and cross-progression across four console platforms and PC. The sources provided here do not establish equivalent current cross-play coverage for every other game, so verify the exact platform combination.

Do these games require a fight stick?

No source establishes a specialty controller as required or superior. Use the controller you can operate comfortably, then prioritize training time and a stable online connection.
