1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe best stylus for a tablet is the pen officially supported by that tablet’s exact model and generation. There is no universal winner: Apple Pencil models work within Apple’s iPad compatibility list, Samsung S Pen variants belong to different Galaxy-device groups, and Surface Pen products depend on Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) support and version. A pen may write on a device while lacking Bluetooth shortcuts, charging, tilt, or other advanced functions.
Start by identifying the tablet’s model number, then match the pen’s compatibility, pressure and tilt features, wireless functions, charging method, attachment, grip, and replacement-tip options. The guide below turns that process into practical picks without pretending that specification counts prove superior drawing feel or latency.

The short answer: choose by tablet ecosystem
Use the following as a starting point, not as a universal ranking. Each recommendation is conditional on the exact device.
| Tablet ecosystem | Best starting point | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| iPad | The Apple Pencil generation listed for your iPad model | Exact iPad model and generation, iPadOS requirement, charging method, and whether you need the features offered by USB-C, 1st-generation, 2nd-generation, or Pro versions |
| Galaxy tablets | The S Pen supplied for, or explicitly listed for, your Galaxy tablet; consider S Pen Pro only when your model and desired remote features are supported | Exact Galaxy model, Bluetooth and Air Actions support, charging, storage or attachment, and replacement-tip compatibility |
| Surface tablets | The Surface Pen or Surface Slim Pen mapped to your Surface model | Inking support, pressure and tilt features, charging or storage, and the specific Surface generation |
| Other Windows tablets and PCs | An active pen confirmed by the device maker as compatible with the required MPP version | Whether the device supports MPP at all and whether its MPP version matches the pen |
Official compatibility tables establish whether a pen is supported. They do not establish a universal winner for comfort, measured latency, accuracy, or drawing feel. Those qualities depend on the tablet, software, nib, screen surface, and personal preference, and the available documentation does not provide controlled comparisons.

Identify your exact tablet before choosing a stylus
A family name is not enough. “iPad Air,” “Galaxy Tab,” or “Surface” can cover several generations with different pen support. Read the model number in the tablet’s settings or on its packaging, and record the operating-system version.
Where to find the model information
- iPad: Open Settings, choose General, then About, and note the model name and model number. If the name is ambiguous, use Apple’s model-identification information to distinguish the generation.
- Galaxy tablet: Open Settings, choose About tablet, and record the model name and model number. Do not assume that an S Pen sold for a Galaxy phone or foldable works with a tablet.
- Surface: Open Settings, choose System, then About. Record the Surface model and Windows edition. Microsoft’s Surface pen table separates models that look similar but have different inking features.
- Other Windows hardware: Check the manufacturer’s technical specifications or support page for “MPP” and its version. If the maker does not confirm MPP support, do not assume that a Surface-branded pen will work.
Save a screenshot or note of the model number before shopping. It prevents the most common mistake: buying a pen that belongs to the right brand but the wrong generation.
Best stylus choices for iPad
Apple maintains separate compatibility lists for Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation). None should be described as universally compatible with iPad.

Apple’s support page, published March 10, 2026, states: “You can use Apple Pencil (USB-C) only with these iPad models and iPadOS 17.1.1 or later.” The listed models include:
- iPad Pro 11-inch, M4 and M5, plus 1st through 4th generations.
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch, 3rd through 6th generations.
- iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch with M2, M3, or M4, plus 4th and 5th generations.
- iPad (A16) and iPad (10th generation).
- iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad mini (6th generation).
This is a compatibility list, not a claim that every listed iPad offers the same Pencil features. Confirm the operating-system requirement and the exact model before purchase. If your iPad is not on Apple’s USB-C list, choose the Pencil generation Apple lists for it instead.
Apple Pencil Pro
Apple Pencil Pro has its own, more recent model list. Check that list against the iPad’s exact generation rather than inferring support from a similar screen size or chip family. The Pro name does not make it a universal upgrade for older iPads.

Apple Pencil (2nd generation)
Second-generation Pencil support differs from both the USB-C and Pro lists. Magnetic attachment, charging, and other functions depend on the iPad model. A 2nd-generation Pencil that fits one iPad is not automatically compatible with every iPad that has a similar edge or display size.
Apple Pencil (1st generation)
First-generation Pencil support is a separate compatibility group again. Check Apple’s current list and the connector or adapter requirement for your iPad before ordering. Do not use the presence of a USB-C port as proof that a first-generation Pencil is supported.
How to make the iPad choice
- Write down the iPad model and generation from Settings > General > About.
- Open Apple’s current Apple Pencil compatibility page and locate that exact model.
- List the Pencil generations shown for the model; ignore models not listed even if their physical connector appears convenient.
- Check the required iPadOS version. Apple specifically requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later for Apple Pencil (USB-C) on its supported models.
- Choose among the listed generations based on the functions you need, such as charging and attachment method. Treat pressure, tilt, and other feature differences as model-dependent rather than universal.
Best S Pen choices for Galaxy tablets
Samsung’s current S Pen guide separates S Pen Pro, Fold Edition, Creator Edition, and device-specific S Pens. The names are not interchangeable product tiers.
Device-specific S Pen
If your Galaxy tablet shipped with an S Pen, that pen is the safest starting point because Samsung designed the tablet and pen as a pair. For a replacement, match the tablet’s exact model and the functions Samsung lists for that model. A pen that physically fits or writes may not support Bluetooth, charging, or Air Actions.
S Pen Pro
Samsung lists S Pen Pro as compatible with a broad set of Galaxy phones, tablets, and laptops. “Broad” does not mean every Galaxy device: the listed feature support still varies by device. Verify the tablet in Samsung’s compatibility guide and check whether the particular Air Actions or remote controls you want are supported.
Fold Edition
Samsung says Fold Edition is limited to Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Fold4, Galaxy Z Fold5, and Galaxy Z Fold6. It is not a general Galaxy-tablet stylus. Do not buy Fold Edition for a Galaxy Tab simply because both products carry the S Pen name.

Note: If it does not work after turning on, please turn off the Bluetooth of the iPad.
Creator Edition and other S Pens
Creator Edition and other device-specific pens should be treated as model-bound accessories. Confirm the exact tablet and the functions you need before assuming that a Creator Edition pen replaces the pen supplied with your device.
Bluetooth, charging, and Air Actions
Samsung notes that some tablet pens lack Bluetooth, charging, or Air Actions. Basic writing support and remote-control support are separate questions:
- If you only need handwriting or drawing, verify that inking works on your tablet.
- If you need a presentation click, camera shutter, gesture, or other remote action, verify Bluetooth and the exact Air Actions supported by both pen and tablet.
- If the pen must remain ready without a separate charging routine, check how that model stores or charges. A passive or non-charging S Pen cannot provide functions that require a battery.
Samsung also notes that selected S Pen models include replacement tips and a tweezer tool. That does not establish that a separate replacement pack is sold for every model or that one pack fits every S Pen. Match any replacement nib to the exact pen model.

Microsoft’s Surface compatibility table shows that inking, pressure, and tilt vary by Surface model and pen combination. For a different Windows PC or tablet, Microsoft says the device manufacturer must confirm MPP support and that the MPP version must match the Surface Pen.
Surface Pen feature differences
Microsoft lists 4,096 pressure points for several Surface-and-pen combinations and 1,024 pressure points for certain older combinations. These are specifications for the listed pairings, not evidence that every Surface Pen or tablet has the same sensitivity. Tilt support also differs by model.
| Microsoft-listed pen mapping | MPP version | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Slim Pen | MPP 2.6 | Use with a device confirmed to support the required MPP version and the pen’s features. |
| Surface Slim Pen (1st generation) and Surface Hub 2 Pen | MPP 2.5 | Do not assume that a newer or older MPP device provides identical feature support. |
| Surface Pen without clip | MPP 2.0 | Check the Surface model’s inking and tilt entries before buying. |
| Single-button, flat-edge pen | MPP 1.5 | Confirm that the target device supports this protocol level. |
| Two-side-button pen | MPP 1.2 | Verify both MPP support and the device’s listed feature set. |
These mappings are Microsoft’s listed relationships. They do not override the target device’s requirements. On a non-Surface Windows machine, the manufacturer’s confirmation of MPP support is essential.

How to choose an MPP pen for Windows
- Identify the exact Surface or Windows device model.
- For a Surface, consult Microsoft’s table for inking, pressure, tilt, and supported pen families.
- For another Windows device, obtain the manufacturer’s stated MPP version. “Supports stylus” without a protocol is insufficient.
- Match the MPP version to the pen’s documented version.
- Confirm charging, storage, button behavior, and replacement-tip availability separately; protocol compatibility alone does not guarantee every accessory feature.
Which stylus features actually matter?
Once compatibility is established, compare the features that affect your work. A larger specification is not automatically a better experience.

Pressure sensitivity
Pressure points describe how many input levels the pen reports in the documented configuration. Microsoft lists 4,096 and 1,024-point combinations on different Surface models. Use the number to understand compatibility and capability, not to rank all pens across ecosystems. The tablet, drawing application, calibration, and nib also influence the result.
Tilt support
Tilt can change line width, shading, or brush behavior in applications that implement it. Check tilt for the exact tablet-and-pen pair. A pen may support pressure while the tablet or application does not support tilt.
Bluetooth and remote actions
Bluetooth is relevant for shortcuts, gestures, presentation controls, camera actions, and other remote functions. It is not required for every writing experience. Samsung explicitly notes that some S Pen models lack Bluetooth, charging, or Air Actions, so do not infer these functions from the S Pen name.
Charging and attachment
Determine whether the pen charges in the tablet, through a cable, in a case, or not at all. Also check where it lives when not in use: magnetic attachment, a device silo, a keyboard slot, or a separate holder. A pen that is technically compatible but easy to misplace may be a poor practical choice.

Shape and grip
Pen diameter, flat edges, button placement, weight, and surface texture are subjective. If possible, try the pen or compare its published dimensions with a pen you already find comfortable. There is no evidence here to declare one shape universally better.

- Creative Freedom, Anywhere: Lightweight aluminum stylus with natural grip. Includes 6 replaceable tips and 3 color stylus pens. Perfect for sharing with friends, family, or colleagues, this bundle ensures you’re always equipped to capture inspiration.
Replacement tips
Look for the exact pen model’s replacement-tip guidance. Samsung’s note that selected S Pens include tips and a tweezer does not guarantee universal interchangeability or separate-pack availability. For Apple Pencil and Surface products, verify the manufacturer’s current replacement-part information rather than assuming that a nib from another generation fits.
A practical buying workflow
- Record the model: Copy the tablet’s full model name and number, not just the family name.
- Check the official list: Use the tablet maker’s current compatibility table and discard every pen not listed for that exact model.
- Separate writing from extras: Decide whether you need handwriting only, pressure, tilt, Bluetooth shortcuts, remote actions, magnetic storage, or charging.
- Match the operating system: For Apple Pencil (USB-C), confirm iPadOS 17.1.1 or later. For Windows, confirm the required MPP version. For Galaxy devices, confirm the software and device support for requested Air Actions.
- Confirm what is in the box: Check whether a charger, cable, adapter, nibs, or tweezer is included. Do not assume a compatible pen includes every accessory.
- Check replacement parts: Verify that replacement tips are available for the exact model before committing to a pen used heavily for notes or drawing.
- Buy from a returnable source: Compatibility tables can change with new hardware and revisions. A return window gives you a way to test pairing and inking on your own tablet.
Troubleshooting a stylus that does not work
The pen does not write at all
- Recheck the tablet’s exact model and compare it with the manufacturer’s list.
- For Apple Pencil, confirm that the Pencil generation is listed for the iPad and that the required iPadOS version is installed.
- For Windows, confirm that the device supports MPP and that the pen’s MPP version matches.
- For Galaxy devices, check whether you bought a Fold Edition or another device-specific S Pen that is not intended for the tablet.
Writing works but shortcuts do not
This usually indicates a feature mismatch rather than a defective nib. Check Bluetooth, battery or charging status, application permissions, and whether the tablet supports the requested remote action. Samsung’s documentation specifically separates basic pen support from Bluetooth, charging, and Air Actions.
The pen pairs but pressure or tilt is missing
Check the tablet-and-pen feature table and the drawing application’s settings. Microsoft’s pressure and tilt entries vary by Surface combination, and a protocol match on Windows does not promise every feature. An application may also need its own pressure or tilt setting enabled.
The pen disconnects or is hard to charge
Confirm the intended charging method, clean the attachment or connector, and check whether the model actually has a battery. A pen without charging or Bluetooth cannot be restored to those functions through software.
Conditional top picks by reader need
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable iPad compatibility | The Apple Pencil generation Apple lists for your exact iPad | USB-C Pencil support requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later on the listed models. |
| A supplied Galaxy-tablet experience | The device-specific S Pen for that tablet | Do not substitute Fold Edition or another model without checking Samsung’s list. |
| Galaxy remote actions | S Pen Pro or another listed Bluetooth-capable model | Air Actions and other features vary by Galaxy device. |
| Surface drawing features | The Surface Pen or Slim Pen listed for the Surface model | Pressure counts and tilt support differ across combinations. |
| Pen support on another Windows PC | An MPP pen whose version the PC maker confirms | MPP support and version matching are both required. |
| Easy long-term maintenance | A pen with confirmed model-specific replacement tips | Availability and interchangeability must be checked for the exact pen. |
What to verify as compatibility changes
New tablets, operating-system updates, and pen revisions can alter support. Apple’s compatibility page used here was published March 10, 2026. The Samsung and Microsoft support material was checked on October 13, 2026, and did not display publication dates in the retrieved content. Recheck the official tables immediately before a later purchase, especially when buying an older pen for a newly released tablet.
The safest final test is simple: the exact tablet model appears in the pen maker’s current support list, the operating-system or protocol requirement is met, and every extra feature you care about is explicitly listed for that device. That process is more dependable than choosing by brand name, pressure-point count, or a pen’s physical resemblance to another model.
Final verdict
For an iPad, buy the Apple Pencil generation Apple lists for that exact iPad. For a Galaxy tablet, begin with its device-specific S Pen and consider S Pen Pro only after checking model-level Bluetooth and Air Actions support. For a Surface, follow Microsoft’s Surface-and-pen table; for another Windows device, require manufacturer-confirmed MPP support and a matching version. These are the best stylus choices because they fit the tablet’s documented ecosystem—not because one pen can be the best for every tablet.
