There is no single best swimming tracker for every athlete. A wristwatch and smart swim goggles solve different problems: a watch is a general-purpose training computer with a screen on your wrist, while goggles can put selected metrics directly in your line of sight. Pool swimmers usually need dependable length, stroke and interval data; open-water swimmers must also check GPS behavior, pairing requirements and navigation; multisport athletes may prefer one device that covers several disciplines.
The choices below are organized by those use cases rather than by an unverified accuracy ranking. Manufacturer battery figures and water ratings are quoted as specifications, not independent test results.

Quick picks by swimmer profile
| Swimmer profile | Best-fit format | Why it fits | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pool swimmer focused on lengths, strokes and structured sets | Wrist swim watch | A watch can record distance, pace, stroke count, SWOLF, drills, alerts and custom workouts without another device. | Confirm the watch supports your pool length and the metrics you actually use. |
| Technique-focused swimmer who wants feedback without turning the wrist | Smart swim goggles | Metrics appear in the goggles’ display while you swim, so you can keep your head position and avoid stopping to read a watch. | Check which metrics are available in the selected configuration and whether heart rate needs another device. |
| Open-water swimmer who needs distance and pace | Watch, or goggles paired to a compatible watch | Some goggles provide in-water guidance but rely on a paired Apple Watch or Garmin for GPS distance and pace. | Verify compatibility, pairing behavior and whether the watch can remain with you during the swim. |
| Open-water swimmer who needs a heading reference | Smart goggles with compass guidance | A compass-based feature can show a chosen heading in the swimmer’s view, reducing the need to sight on landmarks repeatedly. | Navigation guidance is not the same as GPS distance; confirm both separately. |
| Triathlete or multisport athlete | A swim-capable multisport watch, optionally supplemented by goggles | One watch may simplify training across swimming and other sports; goggles can add continuous in-view swim metrics. | Do not assume swim accuracy or battery endurance is superior without independent comparative testing. |
| Athlete who mainly needs heart rate or event-compliant sensors | Dedicated heart-rate sensor | Chest and optical sensors can be selected independently of a display device. | Check the event’s current rules and the sensor’s compatibility with your recording device. |
How swim watches and smart goggles differ
Wrist watches
A swimming watch places the display on your wrist and generally combines swim logging with broader sports and smartwatch functions. Garmin describes Swim 2 as a GPS swimming smartwatch for both pool and open-water use. Its listed swim tools include distance, pace, stroke count, SWOLF, wrist-based heart rate, pacing alerts, drill logging and custom workouts.

The wrist position is convenient for starting intervals and checking a set between lengths, but reading it during a stroke cycle can require rotating the arm or pausing. A watch is therefore a strong fit when your priority is a complete workout record and post-session analysis rather than constant visual feedback.

Smart swim goggles
Smart goggles place a small display in the swimmer’s line of sight. FORM describes Smart Swim 2 as providing customizable in-goggle metrics, automatic stroke and rest detection, post-swim review in its app, and pool and open-water use. This format is useful when you want to see time or stroke information without changing your body position or breaking rhythm.
Goggles can have more dependencies than a self-contained watch. FORM says Smart Swim 2 supplies open-water GPS distance and pace when paired with a compatible Apple Watch or Garmin. Its open-water feature page says time and stroke rate are visible in all open-water modes, while distance and pace require a compatible smartwatch. Heart-rate availability varies by product configuration and the paired device.

Garmin Swim 2: the self-contained watch approach
What it records
Garmin’s description of Swim 2 covers both pool and open-water sessions. The listed metrics include distance and pace for judging workload, stroke count for technique tracking, and SWOLF for combining stroke effort and time into a single efficiency-oriented metric. Wrist-based heart rate can add an intensity signal without a separate strap. Pacing alerts, drill logging and custom workouts are useful when your training is organized around repeat intervals rather than simply recording a continuous swim.
Who should choose it
- Pool swimmers who want lengths, stroke data and structured workouts on the wrist.
- Open-water swimmers who prefer a watch described as having GPS swimming capability rather than relying on goggles and a second watch.
- Coaches or athletes who use pacing alerts, drill sets and custom workouts.
Battery and water rating
The Garmin owner’s manual, version 4 dated September 2023, lists up to 14 hours in GPS mode and up to seven days in watch mode. “Up to” is a manufacturer estimate: recording settings, GPS use, notifications and battery condition affect actual runtime. The same manual lists “Swim, 5 ATM” and explains that the device withstands pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 m. That rating is not permission for every form of diving, high-impact water activity or damaged-device use.
Limits to keep in mind
Swim 2 puts information on the wrist, so it does not solve the problem of reading metrics while your arms remain in a streamlined position. Garmin’s published specifications also do not establish superiority over other devices in an independent accuracy test. Treat its feature list and battery numbers as the manufacturer’s claims.

FORM Smart Swim 2: metrics in your line of sight
Display and automatic detection
FORM lists a customizable in-goggle display, automatic stroke detection and automatic rest detection. The practical advantage is visibility: you can select the information that matters to the set and see it while swimming instead of waiting until a wall or interval break to rotate your wrist. The companion app provides post-swim review after the session.
Open-water GPS and pairing
Smart Swim 2’s open-water distance and pace are conditional. FORM says those metrics are available when the goggles are paired with a compatible Apple Watch or Garmin. Its open-water feature page distinguishes the always-visible basics from paired data: time and stroke rate are available in all open-water modes, while distance and pace require the compatible smartwatch. Before choosing this format for a race or long solo swim, verify that your exact watch model, software and goggles configuration are supported together.
SwimStraight heading guidance
FORM describes SwimStraight as compass-based heading guidance. You set or follow a heading and see directional assistance in the goggles. A compass heading can help you hold a line, but it does not by itself measure GPS distance or pace; those remain tied to the compatible-watch requirement above. Open-water conditions, current and sighting technique can still move you away from the intended route.
Heart-rate configurations and battery
FORM lists multiple Smart Swim 2 configurations, including one with an integrated heart-rate monitor. Heart-rate availability varies by product and paired device, so compare the exact version rather than assuming every package has the same sensor. FORM lists up to 14 hours of battery life. That is a manufacturer figure, not an independent endurance test, and frequent display use or pairing can change the result.
Event approvals
FORM’s open-water page states approvals by World Triathlon, USA Triathlon, PTO/T100, supertri and British Triathlon. Those statements can matter if you intend to race, but rules differ by organizer and can change. FORM advises checking with the event organizer for competitions outside those organizations.

Apple Watch water suitability: read the model and band details
Apple’s support guidance is explicit: “Your Apple Watch is water resistant, but not waterproof.” Series 2 and later carry a 50-meter rating under ISO 22810:2010 and can be used for shallow-water swimming. Apple Watch Ultra and later carry a 100-meter rating and have broader stated water activities. The generation, case and band you select therefore matter.
Apple also says water resistance is not permanent and can diminish over time. Avoid impacts and exposures that can compromise seals, and follow Apple’s care guidance. For Series 2 and later, Apple recommends rinsing the watch with fresh water after swimming. A rating should be treated as a condition-specific limit, not a guarantee that an older or damaged watch remains safe at the original specification.
The cited Apple guidance establishes water-use suitability, but it does not provide a common feature or battery table for every Apple Watch generation. If you are considering Apple Watch as the paired device for smart goggles, confirm the exact model and compatibility separately.
Heart-rate sensors and the dated World Aquatics list
World Aquatics published a “Current List of Approved Wearables: Swimming” dated February 19, 2024. The named products include Garmin HRM-SWIM, Garmin HRM-TRI, Polar OH1, Polar Verity Sense and Polar H10. This is a dated approval list, not a universal recommendation for consumer watches and not evidence that one listed sensor is more accurate than another.
Use the list for the narrow question it answers: whether a named wearable appeared in that organization’s list on that date. For a current meet, ask the organizer for the latest rule and equipment interpretation. A sensor may also need a compatible watch or app to record or display its data.

Choose by swimming environment
Pool swimming
Start with the pool length and your workout style. If you swim coached sets, look for length and stroke tracking, interval support, drill logging and custom workouts. A wrist watch is usually the simpler setup because the display and recording device are in one unit. Smart goggles become more compelling when uninterrupted, in-view feedback matters more than minimizing dependencies.
Open-water swimming
Separate three questions: can the device record time and stroke information, can it obtain GPS distance and pace, and can it help you hold a heading? FORM’s documentation illustrates why these are not interchangeable. Its goggles show time and stroke rate in all open-water modes, provide compass-based SwimStraight guidance, and require a compatible Apple Watch or Garmin for distance and pace. A GPS-capable watch such as Garmin Swim 2 addresses the recording role directly, while a watch-and-goggle combination can add a heads-up display.
Pool and open water
Choose the device that covers your less forgiving environment. A pool-only swimmer can prioritize length and interval tools. Someone who alternates between a measured pool and open water should verify both modes, GPS behavior and water-use limits before comparing secondary smartwatch features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step buying method
- Define the session you need to measure. Write down whether the essential output is lengths, stroke technique, pace, heart rate, open-water distance, heading or a combination.
- Choose the display location. Select a wrist display if a complete watch is the priority; select in-goggle metrics if seeing data without turning your wrist is central to your technique.
- Map every dependency. For goggles, check whether distance, pace or heart rate requires a compatible Apple Watch, Garmin or a particular sensor. A feature that depends on a second device should be treated as a system requirement.
- Check the exact configuration. Product families can contain versions with different heart-rate hardware, bands or accessories. Use the specifications for the selected configuration, not a family-level assumption.
- Match battery mode to your longest session. Compare the manufacturer’s claimed runtime in the mode you will use. GPS and display-heavy sessions are not equivalent to watch mode.
- Verify water-use limits. Read the model-specific rating and activity guidance. Do not infer a device’s limits from another model in the same brand.
- Check race rules. If you compete, review the current organizer policy. A dated approval list or a manufacturer’s event statement does not automatically govern every race.
- Plan for post-swim care. Follow the manufacturer’s rinsing, drying, charging and inspection instructions, especially after salt water or chlorinated water.
Open-water setup checklist
Use this sequence before your first long or competitive swim:
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm that your watch, goggles and any heart-rate sensor are compatible as a complete system, not merely compatible individually.
- Update and charge every component before leaving shore; the quoted battery figures are maximum manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed session times.
- Pair the devices before entering the water and verify that the intended distance, pace and heart-rate fields are available in the selected mode.
- If using heading guidance, set the compass-based direction in a safe, stationary location and understand which information is heading versus GPS distance.
- Run a short familiar-water test. Compare the recorded route and displayed fields with what you expect before relying on the setup for a long swim.
- Secure the watch and goggles so movement, a loose strap or an altered fit cannot interrupt the session.
- After swimming, rinse equipment as directed, especially after salt or chlorinated water, then inspect seals, lenses, charging contacts and straps.
Common problems and practical fixes
Open-water distance or pace is missing in the goggles
FORM identifies a compatible Apple Watch or Garmin as the requirement for those fields. Recheck the watch model, software, pairing state and the selected open-water mode. Time and stroke rate may still be available even when the GPS-dependent fields are not.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Heart rate is not shown
Heart-rate availability can depend on the product configuration and paired device. Confirm whether your Smart Swim 2 version includes an integrated monitor or needs another sensor, then verify that the recording device supports the connection.
The display is distracting or hard to read
Reduce the number of fields to those needed for the current set, adjust fit and lens position, and use a wrist watch for post-set checks if in-goggle information interferes with technique. Customization is useful only when it leaves the swimmer able to maintain safe awareness.
Battery life falls short of the headline figure
“Up to” values are controlled test-style manufacturer estimates. GPS use, display brightness, notifications, pairing, temperature and battery age can reduce runtime. Charge before long sessions and judge the device by the mode-specific figure rather than the watch-mode maximum.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You are unsure whether a watch is safe in water
Read the exact model’s water rating and activity limits. Apple specifically distinguishes water resistant from waterproof and says resistance diminishes over time. A rating from one model cannot be transferred to another, and an impact or worn seal can change the risk.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The specifications establish distinct feature sets and dependencies, not a tested winner. No independent head-to-head accuracy test is established here, so claims that one device counts lengths, strokes or GPS distance more accurately than another would go beyond the available evidence. Battery numbers are manufacturer claims, and water ratings describe model-specific conditions rather than permanent protection.
Use the comparison as a decision tool: select the display format you can read, the environment you actually swim in, and the dependency chain you are willing to maintain. Then verify current compatibility, prices, availability and event rules because those details can change after the manufacturer pages and dated approval list cited above.
Bottom line
For a self-contained record of pool and open-water workouts, Garmin Swim 2 is the clearest watch-style fit in this set. For swimmers who want metrics in their line of sight, FORM Smart Swim 2 offers the distinctive goggles format, but open-water distance and pace require a compatible Apple Watch or Garmin. Apple Watch models can be suitable for shallow-water swimming within Apple’s stated limits, while dedicated sensors serve athletes whose priority is heart rate or event-specific approval. The right choice is the one whose environment, visibility, dependencies, battery mode and water limits match your training—not a universal ranking unsupported by comparative testing.
