The most reliable supermarket layout in Supermarket Simulator is a modular grid of straight, category-grouped aisles with one continuous route from the entrance to checkout. Put related products in the same run, keep refrigerated and frozen goods in dedicated zones, place produce stalls and scales beside checkout, and reserve the shortest storage path for items that sell or restock fastest. This arrangement is a practical starting template rather than an engine-certified optimum: the developer describes efficiency, aesthetics, aisle management and shelf placement as goals, but does not publish a guaranteed blueprint, universal aisle width or fixed customer-path formula.
What the best layout is trying to achieve
A good floor plan solves five competing problems at once: customers must understand where to walk, staff need unobstructed access, shelves must be easy to refill, checkout traffic must not spill into shopping aisles, and the store must remain adaptable as licenses and furniture unlock. Compare any proposed plan against these measures:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Storage-to-shelf walking distance: How far does a restocker or the player travel for a refill?
- Route clarity: Can a customer move from entrance through the store without dead ends or awkward reversals?
- Congestion: Do carts, scales, checkout queues and restockers compete for the same narrow space?
- Facings for volatile products: Can discounted or suddenly popular items receive extra shelf capacity?
- Expansion: Can another straight aisle or furniture row be added without rebuilding the whole shop?
The official Steam description presents store design as a balance of efficiency and aesthetics and emphasizes deciding where products are displayed, managing aisles and maintaining a smooth shopping experience. The practical design below translates those goals into a buildable plan.
The recommended grid layout
Use straight, parallel aisle runs
Build shelves in parallel rows aligned to the game’s Snap/Grid System. Straight runs make gaps visible, simplify restocking and give customers a predictable direction of travel. Leave a clear turning area at each aisle end rather than pushing shelf corners together. The game does not publish a universal minimum aisle width, so do not treat a particular number of tiles as mandatory; widen an aisle whenever carts, employees or carried boxes regularly collide.

Patch 1.5.0 introduced the Snap/Grid System and noted that existing furniture might overlap or clip until it is repositioned. If a previously tidy aisle looks misaligned after an update, move and resnap the affected shelves instead of assuming the collision is a customer-AI change.
Keep one obvious perimeter route
Connect the entrance, the main shopping area and checkout with a continuous route around the perimeter or along one side of the grid. Avoid dead-end aisles that force a customer or employee to reverse through a busy shelf face. A perimeter route also gives you a safe path for carrying stock when the central aisles are occupied.
Leave service space at aisle ends
Do not use every open square for another display. Turning space at both ends lets a restocker approach a shelf, rotate with a box and leave without blocking the aisle. It also gives customers a place to change direction before a queue or checkout lane. If your store feels cramped, removing one row of shelving often improves flow more than adding another product category.

How to zone shelves by category and storage type
Ambient packaged goods
Use ordinary shelf aisles for ambient packaged products and keep related categories in readable runs. Customers should be able to scan one section for a group of goods instead of crossing the store for every item. Arrange each run so the most frequently replenished products are nearest the route to storage; slower sellers can occupy the farther end.

Chilled and frozen goods
Cluster refrigerators together in one chilled run and freezers together in a separate frozen run. This prevents a restocker from zig-zagging between incompatible storage areas and makes the temperature category obvious to customers. Leave enough end space for doors, carried boxes and turning; a refrigerator that technically fits but blocks the adjacent aisle is not an efficient placement.
Produce
Give produce a dedicated stall-and-scale zone rather than scattering stalls among ordinary shelves. Group the stalls together near checkout, then position the scale immediately before the checkout area. According to a 2025 Steam Community guide, the scale is always the last place a customer visits before checkout. Keeping it out of a main aisle prevents weighing traffic from crossing ordinary shopping routes.
High-turnover and bulky items
Place products that sell quickly, occupy large boxes or require frequent replenishment closest to the storage-room exit. This shortens repeated carrying trips. The best location is not necessarily the first shelf a customer sees; it is the shelf that can be refilled with the fewest crossings while still fitting the category’s normal shopping route.
Where to put checkout and the produce scales
Reserve the end of the customer route for checkout. A practical sequence is: entrance, category aisles, produce stalls, scale, then checkout. Customers can finish shopping without walking back through the store, and employees can service the front area without cutting across every aisle.

Put scales directly beside, or just before, the checkout zone. Do not place a scale in the center of the store merely because an empty square is available. The 2025 community guide also recommends hiring a customer helper for this area; treat that as player advice rather than a guaranteed requirement. If queues form, first check whether the scale is forcing shoppers to cross an aisle or whether checkout furniture is narrowing the final turning space.
Planning shelf facings and daily stock
Start with normal demand, then observe sell-through
Give each product enough facings to avoid routine empty shelves, but do not fill the store with duplicates before you know demand. A 2025 Steam Community guide says that stocking about 20 units of an item will generally be enough for a day. That is player guidance, not a guaranteed game rule, so use it as an opening quantity and compare it with your own sales history.
Expand discounted and popular items
Discounted goods need more shelf space than their normal allocation. The same guide reports that a product discounted by 40%–60% can sell 100–200 items in a day. Those figures are community observations, not published engine limits; they describe a possible spike, not a promise for every item or store. When you discount a product, add facings before opening the day, then watch how quickly the shelf empties. Return space to other categories when the promotion ends.
Use extra facings without breaking the category run
When a fast seller needs more capacity, extend its existing run or place a second facing immediately beside it. Avoid moving it to an unrelated corner, which increases search time and lengthens restocking paths. Keep an open end space so a temporary promotion can grow without blocking a neighboring category.

Designing the storage room
Build wall runs plus compact central rows
Use the storage-room walls for long rack runs and add compact rows in the center. Preserve a straight route from the loading area to the store door; racks should not create a maze that forces boxes around multiple corners. Leave enough clearance at row ends for turning and for carrying stock through the room.
Label racks consistently
Use a stable labeling scheme, such as one label per category or storage type, and keep the same order in the storage room and sales floor. Consistency matters more than the exact naming convention because it reduces searching when a shelf is empty. The community guide specifically recommends managing unlabeled-rack use when organizing storage.
Keep fast-moving stock near the exit
Place the racks serving your busiest shelf runs closest to the door leading to the supermarket. Slower or seasonal stock can occupy the deeper rows. This arrangement reduces the distance for repeated refills and leaves the central storage path open.

A 2025 Steam Community guide reports fitting at least 82 racks in a storage room and moving the computer there to free supermarket floor space. The 82-rack figure is a community benchmark for a particular game version, not a permanent capacity guarantee; recheck the room after major patches. Do not pursue the maximum count if it removes the route needed to carry boxes safely.

Step-by-step build order for a new store
- Mark the entrance-to-checkout route. Reserve a continuous perimeter or side route before placing any furniture.
- Activate grid alignment. Snap shelves and racks into parallel lines. After patch 1.5.0 or any furniture update, inspect for overlap and resnap pieces that clip.
- Place category runs. Start with ambient shelves, then add a refrigerator run, a freezer run and a dedicated produce zone.
- Set the front-of-store sequence. Put produce stalls near checkout and the scale immediately before checkout.
- Reserve turning space. Leave open squares at aisle ends and beside checkout rather than filling every gap.
- Build storage access. Put high-turnover racks near the storage exit, label racks consistently and keep a straight loading-to-door path.
- Stock conservatively. Begin around the community guide’s 20-unit daily suggestion, then adjust using actual sell-through.
- Run a test day. Watch for customers reversing, restockers waiting at corners, scales interrupting traffic and shelves emptying too early.
- Iterate one change at a time. Move a single run, widen one bottleneck or add one facing, then observe the next day so you know which change helped.
Choosing between common layout patterns
| Layout pattern | Strength | Typical weakness | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parallel grid with perimeter route | Clear navigation, easy expansion and predictable restocking | Requires discipline to preserve end-turning space | Most stores and most progression stages |
| Dense wall-only layout | Maximizes display along the perimeter | Long walking distances and little room for turning | Small early stores with limited furniture |
| Central island maze | Can display many shelves in a compact footprint | Dead ends, blocked restockers and confusing customer paths | Only when islands remain short and fully connected |
| Open-plan mixed categories | Flexible while experimenting with new products | Weak category recognition and longer refill routes | Temporary layout during early licenses |
The grid plan usually wins because it balances all six practical axes: storage walking distance, route clarity, checkout congestion, facings, restocker access and expansion. A different pattern can work in a small shop, but its trade-offs should be visible before you commit.
Stopping restockers from getting stuck
- Check aisle ends first: A shelf, rack or checkout object may have removed the turning square.
- Remove diagonal obstacles: Misaligned furniture can create an invisible-looking corner after a grid or patch change.
- Separate queues from refill routes: Keep checkout and scale traffic out of the path from storage to sales-floor shelves.
- Reduce central storage density: If a restocker cannot pass a rack row with a box, remove a row before adding more capacity.
- Prioritize half-empty shelves: The community guide says restockers prioritize vehicles and shelves that are 50% empty. Treat that as observed behavior, not a developer guarantee, and keep urgent stock accessible.
- Control unlabeled racks: Consistent labels help you find the correct box quickly and prevent miscellaneous stock from spreading through the room.
When to expand the building
Fix operational problems before purchasing a larger section. Blocked aisles, repeated stockouts and slow restocking usually indicate a routing or allocation issue that more floor space will not solve. The community guide recommends prioritizing licenses and product variety for income growth and expanding only when necessary.
Expand when the current grid cannot provide enough facings for established demand, when a new storage type needs its own run, or when checkout and produce traffic cannot be separated without sacrificing category access. Add the next section as an extension of an existing straight aisle rather than creating a disconnected room. Recheck every connection after expansion and after patches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMaintenance checklist after every layout change
- Walk the full entrance-to-checkout route as if you were a customer.
- Carry a box from storage to each category and note corners where you must reverse.
- Confirm refrigerator, freezer and produce areas remain visibly distinct.
- Check that the scale is still immediately before checkout.
- Look for furniture overlap or clipping after updates, especially changes associated with the Snap/Grid System.
- Compare shelf sell-through with facings and enlarge only the runs that empty early.
- Verify that labels still match rack contents and that the storage exit is not blocked.
Pricing and layout interaction
Layout cannot compensate for a price strategy that suppresses demand, and a discount can make a previously adequate shelf undersized. A community recommendation is to set prices 5%–7% above market price for minimal complaints. This is player guidance, not an official pricing rule. If you use that approach, still monitor sell-through and customer behavior rather than treating the percentage as universal. Any discount in the reported 40%–60% range may require temporary extra facings because demand can rise sharply.
What the game does not establish
There is no published official blueprint that guarantees maximum profit, no universal aisle-width number and no documented formula that makes one customer path optimal in every store size or version. The Steam description establishes the design goals; community guides provide practical observations such as the scale’s position, approximate daily stock and rack capacity. Use those observations as starting points, validate them in your current build and expect behavior or furniture placement to change after patches.
The Bottom Line
Build a snapped, straight grid with category zones, a continuous perimeter route and clear turning space. Keep fast-moving stock near storage access, place produce and the scale beside checkout, label racks consistently, and adjust facings from observed sell-through. Recheck the plan after updates and expand only after the existing routes and restocking process run cleanly.
