Frozen cherries, mango, and peaches work when you want a different fruit profile. For quick breads, Nebraska Extension specifically names raspberries, cherries, and mixed berries as alternatives. These are practical swaps, not guaranteed flavor- or texture-matched replacements.
Choose a substitute by what you’re making
| Use | Good alternatives | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Smoothie with a berry flavor | Frozen raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, or mixed berries | Flavor and color will change; the amount of seeds may differ. |
| Smoothie with a sweeter or tropical profile | Frozen mango or peaches; cherries for a deeper fruit flavor | The result will taste distinctly different from a blueberry smoothie. |
| Quick bread | Frozen raspberries, cherries, or mixed berries | Nebraska Extension names these as blueberry alternatives; expect a change in flavor and appearance. |
| Smoothie when you have no frozen fruit | Fresh fruit | Cleveland Clinic lists fresh fruit as a smoothie option. The drink may be less cold or thick; add ice only if you want that texture. |
How to substitute in smoothies
Start with the recipe’s stated amount of fruit, then adjust the liquid if the smoothie is thicker or thinner than you want. This is a practical starting point, not a universal conversion: the cited sources do not establish exact ratios or guarantee that different fruits produce the same flavor, color, or texture.

Frozen fruit helps keep a smoothie cold and thick. The National Center for Home Food Preservation notes that frozen fruit can take the place of ice cubes while contributing fruit flavor. Choose plain frozen fruit without added sugar if you want control over sweetness. Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian Beth Czerwony, RD, LD, advises: “Just be sure to buy the plain fruit mixture, without added sugar.”
How to substitute in quick breads
Nebraska Extension says frozen fruit can replace fresh fruit in most quick-bread recipes and specifically identifies raspberries, cherries, and mixed berries as alternatives to blueberries. Use the recipe as written rather than adding liquid based on a general rule: the available guidance does not establish a universal moisture adjustment for every fruit or recipe.

Use frozen fruit without thawing
Iowa State University Extension says frozen fruit can be used in baking without thawing first and can also go into smoothies frozen. If you do need to thaw it, Iowa State Extension describes thawing in the refrigerator, in a sealed bag under running water, or in a microwave when using the fruit immediately. Follow the current package directions and food-safety guidance for the specific product.
