The best streaming device is the one that runs the app holding your match rights in your country. There is no box that unlocks every rugby competition worldwide. For RugbyPass TV, the clearest choices are an Apple TV or an Android TV device; a Chromecast or AirPlay route also works when the service and your phone or tablet support it. Before buying hardware, identify the exact match, broadcaster and territory.
Start with the match, not the device
Rugby coverage is sold by competition, event and territory. A streamer can provide excellent picture quality and still show nothing if the required broadcaster does not hold rights where you live. World Rugby’s 2026 announcement for the France XV v England XV match illustrates the point: RugbyPass TV planned to show it free worldwide on June 19, 2026, except in France, where L’Equipe TV carried it. That was a specific event arrangement, not a permanent global rugby package.
Use this order when choosing:
- Find the official rights holder for your country and the exact fixture.
- Check whether its current app supports the TV platform or device generation you intend to buy.
- Confirm the match is included in your subscription, free-to-air service or event pass.
- Only then compare hardware, network connections and picture features.
This prevents the most expensive mistake: purchasing a device first and discovering that the needed app or match is blocked in your territory.

Which services show rugby in different countries?
The 2026 Six Nations guide gives a useful snapshot of how rights vary:

Those are season-specific examples. Rights can change for the next tournament, and other competitions use different arrangements. The NRL’s official watch information shows the same pattern: Nine carries selected free-to-air games, Kayo offers every game live and on demand in its market, and WatchNRL serves international viewers while excluding Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
RugbyPass TV is another important route. World Rugby’s June 2025 notice listed Android TV and Apple TV apps, plus HD television streaming through Chromecast and AirPlay. A February 2026 World Rugby update also described selected international sevens and 15s matches on desktop, FAST channels or the free RugbyPass App in select territories. “Free” therefore does not mean “available everywhere”; the event and your location still need to match.

Apple TV 4K
Apple TV is a direct platform fit because World Rugby has identified an Apple TV app for RugbyPass TV. It is a sensible choice if you already use an iPhone or iPad, want AirPlay available without extra equipment, or prefer a dedicated interface rather than casting for every match.
Do not assume that every Apple TV generation, store region or current app build is supported. Check the RugbyPass TV listing on your local Apple TV App Store and the service’s device requirements before purchase. The available evidence confirms platform support, not a model-by-model performance ranking, current pricing or retailer inventory.

Android TV or Google TV hardware
World Rugby’s 2025 notice also listed an Android TV app. A television or streaming stick running Android TV or Google TV is therefore a practical candidate when the app appears in your local store. This route can be convenient if your household already uses Android phones or Google accounts, but the operating-system name alone is not enough: manufacturers sometimes ship different software versions, and app availability can vary by country.
Open the device’s app store before committing where possible. Search for RugbyPass TV, verify the publisher and read the supported-device information. If the listing is absent, treat that as a compatibility problem rather than assuming sideloading will solve rights or certification restrictions.
Chromecast casting
World Rugby described HD television streaming through Chromecast. Casting is useful when the RugbyPass app works on your phone or tablet but you do not need a separate full-time box. Connect the Chromecast-capable device and the mobile device to the same home network, open the match in the app and select the Cast icon.
Casting depends on the app exposing a Cast control and on the phone remaining connected and powered. It is less convenient for a shared household that wants a remote-first TV interface, and a weak Wi-Fi network can affect playback. Confirm that the exact event can be cast; an app may permit mobile playback while restricting external displays.
AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad
AirPlay is the parallel option for Apple mobile users. World Rugby’s notice says RugbyPass TV supports HD television streaming through AirPlay. An Apple TV or AirPlay-capable television can receive the stream from the app when both devices are on the same network.

AirPlay is attractive if you already own compatible hardware, but it is not a substitute for checking rights. The receiver can display only what the RugbyPass app is permitted to play in your territory, and app updates can change the available AirPlay control.

1. Write down the exact fixture
Record the teams, competition, kickoff date and location. “Live rugby” is too broad: a Six Nations match, an NRL game and a World Rugby sevens event can have different rights holders even on the same weekend.
2. Use the rights holder’s current watch page
Look for the official broadcaster or competition page for your country. Confirm whether access is free, requires a subscription, or is restricted to a named event pass. A service’s general rugby marketing page does not prove that it carries your fixture.

4. Decide between native playback and casting
- Choose a native TV app when several people watch, you want a remote-controlled interface, or you need the most repeatable matchday routine.
- Choose Chromecast or AirPlay when you already own a compatible receiver and normally watch from a phone or tablet.
- Use a computer connected to the TV when the broadcaster supports desktop playback but has no compatible TV app; check the service’s display and browser rules first.
5. Check your network connection
Ethernet can be useful for a fixed streaming box near the router, while Wi-Fi is more flexible for a television or stick. 6. Verify video format expectations

Setting up RugbyPass TV on a TV
Native Apple TV or Android TV setup

- Open the local app store and search for “RugbyPass TV.”

Calculate the total cost rather than comparing box prices alone:
- Hardware: the streaming box, stick or receiver, plus any required cables or Ethernet adapter.
- Service access: the broadcaster subscription, event pass or account fee. Some fixtures are free-to-air; others are not.

Video stutters while other apps work
Move the receiver closer to the router, use Ethernet if the device supports it, pause heavy downloads and restart the stream. If possible, test the broadcaster on another approved device. A different box may not help if the service or home connection is the bottleneck.
Casting connects but shows a blank screen
Update the mobile app and receiver, confirm both are on the same network and look for an in-app Cast or AirPlay control. Some services block generic mirroring while allowing their official casting path.
You are watching from outside your home country
Do not assume your domestic subscription travels. Rugby rights are territorial, and the NRL’s WatchNRL exclusions for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands show how explicit those boundaries can be. Check the service’s travel and location policy rather than relying on the device location.
