Apple TV 4K is the strongest documented starting point for privacy-conscious viewers because tvOS 18.6 includes a control that stops apps from asking to access the advertising ID. That is a narrow advertising identifier control, not a promise that Apple, streaming services, or every installed app stops collecting data.

Amazon Fire TV, Google TV and Roku also expose useful controls, but they divide privacy into different pieces: advertising IDs, device-use telemetry, third-party app activity, interest-based advertising, over-the-air viewing and automatic content recognition (ACR). The best choice depends on which of those data flows you want to limit and which ecosystem you already use.

The short answer

Choose Apple TV 4K if your priority is preventing apps from accessing an advertising ID and you are willing to review separate Apple TV app history, location and analytics settings. On tvOS 18.6, turning off Allow Apps to Ask to Track prevents apps from accessing the advertising ID and from asking to track. Apps that received permission earlier may need to be revoked separately.

Choose Amazon Fire TV when you need the Fire TV ecosystem and want several independent switches for device-usage data, third-party app usage, interest-based advertising and certain over-the-air viewing data. Those switches do not cover all processing connected with Amazon services such as Prime Video.

Choose Google TV if you want to manage the advertising ID at the Google TV platform level. Deleting the ID opts out of its use for personalized ads; resetting it only creates a replacement identifier. Choose Roku if its interface and channel catalog fit you, but treat Roku’s advertising, menu-ad and Smart TV Experience controls as separate settings rather than one privacy switch.

No platform in this comparison can be described as fully private. Your account, installed applications, streaming subscriptions, voice features, viewing behavior and network provider can all create additional records outside the control discussed here.

What the privacy controls actually cover

Streaming-device settings are purpose-specific. An advertising-ID opt-out changes how an identifier may be used for personalized advertising; it does not automatically stop a service from keeping an account history or an app from collecting diagnostics. Device-usage telemetry, third-party app activity, ACR from television inputs and menu advertising are different data paths.

  • Advertising ID: a platform-level identifier that can be used to associate activity with advertising or measurement. Apple, Google TV and Roku document controls that limit access to or use of this identifier. Amazon exposes an interest-based advertising control alongside other settings.
  • Device and app usage: telemetry about how the device or installed apps are used. Fire TV separates device-usage data from third-party app-usage data; disabling one does not imply that the other is disabled.
  • TV-input viewing and ACR: on supported Roku TVs, Smart TV Experience addresses automatic content recognition from antenna and connected inputs. It is distinct from Roku’s personalized-ad and measurement controls.
  • Menu advertising: Roku’s home-screen and screensaver preferences apply to a narrower class of ads than video advertising or ads shown inside partner apps.
  • App history and analytics: Apple TV app play history, search history, location and analytics have controls separate from the operating-system tracking prompt.

Platform comparison

Platform Documented privacy controls Important limitation
Apple TV 4K On tvOS 18.6, turn off Allow Apps to Ask to Track; separately manage Apple TV app play history, search history, location and analytics. The tracking prompt concerns advertising-ID access. Earlier app permissions may require individual revocation, and app or service practices remain separate.
Amazon Fire TV Separate settings cover device-usage data, third-party app usage data, interest-based ads and certain over-the-air viewing data. Amazon says the device-use setting does not affect processing associated with Amazon services such as Prime Video and does not cover every form of interest-based advertising.
Google TV On Google TV running on Google Streamer with Android 14, delete the advertising ID to opt out of its use for personalized ads, or reset it to create a new ID. Deleting and resetting have different effects. Other device makers and software versions may present different controls.
Roku Disable personalized ads or advertising-ID use; manage certain menu-banner ad preferences; on supported Roku TVs, control Smart TV Experience and its ACR collection. Menu-ad preferences do not cover video ads or partner-app ads. Turning off Smart TV Experience does not also turn off personalized ads or measurement.

The documented versions above are specific reference points, not a guarantee that every current device shows identical wording. The Network Advertising Initiative cautions that platform instructions can become incomplete or vary by software version.

Apple TV 4K: best documented advertising-ID control

Why it leads this list

Apple TV 4K has the clearest, narrowly defined control for a viewer who does not want apps to request access to an advertising identifier. The NAI instructions for tvOS 18.6 say that switching off Allow Apps to Ask to Track prevents apps from accessing the advertising ID and from presenting tracking requests.

This is useful because it addresses the permission prompt at the operating-system level instead of relying on each app to offer an equivalent option. It should be understood as a scoped advantage: it does not establish that all Apple or third-party processing stops, and it does not erase information already held by an app or service.

How to configure it

  1. Update the Apple TV to the tvOS version you intend to use, then open Settings.
  2. Open the privacy and tracking controls and switch Allow Apps to Ask to Track off. The exact menu placement can change with tvOS releases, so search Settings for the label if the path differs.
  3. Review apps that were granted tracking permission before the global prompt was disabled. Revoke those permissions individually where the current tvOS interface lists them.
  4. Open the Apple TV app’s own settings and review Play History, Search History, Location and Analytics separately. These controls do not follow automatically from the tracking switch.

Who should buy it

Apple TV 4K is a good fit when you value a polished streaming interface, use Apple services or want a single, documented way to stop apps from asking for advertising-ID access. It is less suitable if your household depends on another platform’s channels, accounts or smart-TV integration and does not want to maintain Apple-specific settings alongside app-level controls.

Amazon Fire TV: the most divided set of controls

What the switches mean

Fire TV separates privacy choices that are often conflated elsewhere. Its documented settings distinguish Device Usage Data, Collect App Usage Data, Interest-Based Ads and certain data associated with over-the-air viewing. Review each setting rather than assuming that one opt-out covers the others.

Amazon explicitly says that turning off device-usage data does not affect processing related to the user’s Amazon services, including Prime Video. It also says the device-use setting does not cover all interest-based advertising processing. A viewer who disables one telemetry switch can therefore still have service-specific records and advertising-related processing.

How to configure it

  1. Open Settings on Fire TV and enter the privacy or preferences area where Amazon lists data-use controls. The labels and menu order can vary by Fire OS release.
  2. Turn off Device Usage Data if you do not want the device-level usage telemetry described by Amazon.
  3. Review Collect App Usage Data separately. This concerns third-party app activity and is not automatically changed by the device-use switch.
  4. Open Interest-Based Ads and choose the available opt-out. Treat this as an advertising preference, not a deletion request for account or viewing history.
  5. If the Fire TV is connected to an antenna, review the separate over-the-air viewing-data option and decide whether to disable it.

Trade-offs

Fire TV gives a privacy-conscious household more individual decisions than a single all-purpose toggle, but that granularity requires more maintenance. Amazon services can continue processing information under their own terms, and installed applications can collect data independently of Fire TV’s device controls.

Google TV: understand delete versus reset

The decisive distinction

On Google TV running on Google Streamer with Android 14, the documented advertising control offers two actions that sound similar but are not equivalent. Delete advertising ID removes the identifier and opts out of its use for personalized ads. Reset advertising ID replaces the old identifier with a new one; it does not opt you out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to configure it

  1. Open Settings and go to the privacy or advertising section on the Google TV device.
  2. Choose Delete advertising ID when your goal is to stop the platform from using that identifier for personalized advertising.
  3. Do not choose Reset advertising ID as a substitute for opting out. Reset is appropriate only when you want a fresh identifier, not when you want no advertising-ID use.
  4. Check the privacy controls of every installed streaming app separately. The cited Google TV control concerns the platform advertising ID, not every identifier an app may create.

Version and hardware caveat

The documented instructions refer specifically to Google TV on Google Streamer with Android 14. A television or streaming box from another manufacturer may use a different Android build, expose different labels or place the setting elsewhere. Confirm the software version shown in the device’s About screen before following a guide written for this configuration.

Roku: three separate privacy decisions

Advertising ID and personalized ads

Roku software 14.6 documentation describes a control for personalized ads or advertising-ID use. Disable it if you do not want Roku to use that identifier for personalized advertising. This choice does not automatically change Smart TV Experience or erase viewing records held by a channel.

Menu and screensaver ads

Roku also provides preferences for certain ads in its menus and screensavers. Roku Support, in documentation updated June 18, 2026, states: “These settings will only apply to non-video, banner ads that appear in Roku menus and screensavers.” Video advertising and ads inside partner applications are outside that preference.

Smart TV Experience and ACR

On supported Roku TVs, the Smart TV Experience setting controls ACR collection from antenna and connected TV inputs. Turning it off addresses that input-viewing data path; Roku says it does not also turn off personalized ads or measurement. If you want both limits, change both controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to configure it

  1. Open Settings and locate the privacy or advertising area on the Roku software installed on your device.
  2. Disable personalized ads or advertising-ID use if you do not want Roku to use that identifier for ad personalization.
  3. Review the menu and screensaver ad-preference setting, remembering that it covers non-video banner ads only.
  4. On a Roku TV, open the Smart TV Experience control and disable it if you do not want ACR collection from antenna or connected inputs.
  5. After changing Smart TV Experience, revisit personalized-ad and measurement settings; they remain separate.

Which streaming device collects the least data?

There is no defensible universal ranking from these controls alone. The platforms expose different switches, use different definitions and share data with different apps and services. A device may collect less in one category while offering fewer controls in another.

If the question means “Which device gives me the clearest documented way to stop apps from accessing an advertising ID?” Apple TV 4K is the strongest answer in this comparison because of the tvOS 18.6 Allow Apps to Ask to Track control. If the question means “Which device stops all viewing, account and app data collection?” none of the four can make that promise.

Choose by your actual viewing setup

You want the narrowest app tracking permission

Start with Apple TV 4K. Disable the tracking request control, revoke earlier permissions and then review the Apple TV app’s independent history and analytics settings.

You want granular telemetry choices

Fire TV is the most explicitly divided in the supplied documentation. It lets you decide separately about device usage, app usage, interest-based ads and certain over-the-air viewing data, while requiring you to remember that Amazon-service processing continues outside the device-use switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You already use Google accounts and Google TV

Google TV’s key decision is simple once the terminology is clear: delete the advertising ID to opt out of its use for personalized ads; reset it only to replace it. Confirm that your hardware actually matches the Google Streamer/Android 14 documentation.

You watch antenna channels through a Roku TV

Roku is the only platform here with a specifically documented Smart TV Experience control for ACR from antenna and connected inputs. Change that setting separately from personalized ads and menu-ad preferences, and remember that partner-app video ads are unaffected by the menu-banner option.

A practical privacy setup sequence

  1. Record the software version. The documented references are tvOS 18.6, Fire OS 8, Google TV on Google Streamer with Android 14 and Roku software 14.6. Use the instructions that match your installed version.
  2. List the data purposes you want to limit. Decide whether your concern is advertising IDs, device telemetry, third-party app usage, TV-input viewing, menu ads or app history. They are not interchangeable.
  3. Change platform-level controls first. Apply the relevant operating-system setting before opening individual streaming apps.
  4. Review existing permissions. A global prompt setting may prevent future requests without revoking permissions already granted. Apple TV specifically requires this distinction.
  5. Audit each streaming app. Check viewing history, search history, personalization, diagnostics and voice features inside the app. Platform-level advertising controls do not automatically override those choices.
  6. Recheck after updates or a factory reset. Menu names and defaults can change with software updates, and a reset may restore onboarding questions or default privacy choices.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing an advertising-ID opt-out with a no-collection mode. It limits one identifier or purpose; it does not erase account, subscription or app records.
  • Turning off one Fire TV switch and assuming the rest changed. Device usage, app usage, interest-based ads and over-the-air viewing are documented as separate categories.
  • Choosing Google TV reset instead of delete. Reset creates a new advertising ID and is not an opt-out.
  • Expecting Roku menu preferences to remove video ads. Roku limits that setting to non-video banner ads in menus and screensavers, not video ads or partner-app ads.
  • Disabling Roku Smart TV Experience and stopping there. That addresses ACR from supported TV inputs but does not also disable personalized ads or measurement.
  • Assuming the same path works everywhere. The NAI warns that instructions can vary by platform version; television manufacturers may also alter Google TV menus.

What this comparison can and cannot establish

The documented controls show how each platform describes particular data uses and opt-outs. They do not provide an independent laboratory measurement of how much data each device transmits, a complete audit of every streaming application or a universal ranking of privacy performance. App developers, account settings, firmware revisions and regional rules can change the result for a particular household.

Use the comparison as a configuration guide: select the ecosystem you need, apply every relevant control rather than a single headline toggle, and verify the labels on the device in front of you.
