If streaming apps keep closing, freezing, or refusing to open, buying a new player is not a guaranteed cure. The failure can be inside one app, the device software, background processes, available storage, or the network. First identify whether one app is affected or the whole platform, then apply the platform’s documented fixes. If the television’s built-in system remains the problem, an external player can give you a different operating platform—but it can also reproduce an app-side or network-side fault.
The comparisons below therefore focus on app compatibility, diagnostic controls, storage and network considerations, ecosystem fit, and exact-model support information. There is no verified crash-rate ranking for streaming devices.

Start by identifying what is actually crashing
“Apps that keep crashing” can describe several different failures. The distinction determines whether a replacement device is relevant.

| One app will not open, or closes immediately | The app installation, its data, or a service-specific issue is more likely than a dead streaming device. | Update the app, restart the player, then reinstall or clear the app’s data where the platform provides that control. |
| Several unrelated apps fail to open | Look at device software, available storage, or the internet connection. | Restart the device, check for system updates, review storage, and test the connection. |
| The app opens but crashes during playback | Playback conditions, the app version, account state, or network stability may be involved. | Test another title and another app, then update the app and verify the connection. |
| The television’s built-in apps fail while an external player works | The television platform may be the limiting factor, although the individual app or network could still be responsible. | Use the external platform if it supports your required services, and keep its software current. |
| The same app fails on multiple devices | A service outage, account problem, or app defect is more plausible than a single player fault. | Check the service’s status and contact the app developer if platform troubleshooting does not help. |
Do not infer reliability from a single successful test. A different device changes the operating system and app build, but it does not remove a service outage, a damaged account, an incompatible regional app, or an unstable connection.

Run the low-risk fixes before spending money
- Restart the streaming player. A restart clears temporary processes without erasing your configuration. Roku describes this as “the least invasive reset method” and says it will not affect settings. Use the device’s normal restart command rather than immediately performing a factory reset.
- Update the affected app. An app that was built for an older platform version can close during launch or playback. If only one service is affected, updating that service is more informative than replacing all hardware.
- Update the device software. Install any pending platform update, then restart and test again. A system update can change app compatibility, security components, and networking behavior.
- Force-stop or close the app where available. Google TV’s documented guidance specifically includes force-stopping the problem app. This is useful when the app remains stuck in memory after a failed launch.
- Clear app cache and data where the platform offers it. Amazon’s Fire TV guidance says to clear an app’s cache and data or restart the device when a downloaded app is not working as expected. Clearing data can sign you out and remove local settings, so have your account credentials ready.
- Reinstall the app. Remove the affected app, restart if the platform requests it, and install it again from the platform’s store. Reinstallation replaces damaged local files but will not fix a service outage or unsupported regional availability.
- Check free storage. Roku identifies low storage as a possible cause of “Can’t run app” and “Insufficient memory” errors. Remove apps you no longer use, then retry the failing app. More storage is not proof that a device will crash less often; it is simply one condition that can prevent an app from launching.
- Check the connection. Confirm that another app can reach the internet and that the device reports a normal connection. Roku notes that weak Wi-Fi or an internet-provider problem can stop an app from opening. If several apps fail at once, a connection check is more useful than reinstalling each app individually.
- Separate an app fault from a platform fault. Test at least one unrelated app and, if possible, a different title in the same service. If the problem remains limited to one service after the steps above, Google advises contacting that app’s developer.
Keep a short record of the result after each step: which app was tested, whether it failed while opening or playing, and whether other apps worked. That record prevents repeated resets and gives a developer or platform-support agent actionable information.
Platform-specific guidance
Roku: investigate memory and connectivity errors
Roku’s support article for “Can’t run app” and “Insufficient memory” errors lists two broad possibilities: insufficient storage and a connection problem. Its sequence emphasizes a system restart, removing apps to free space, and checking the connection. The article was last updated September 6, 2026: Roku’s documented troubleshooting steps.
Use the on-screen restart command first. As Roku states, “A system restart is the least invasive reset method and won’t affect your settings.” If the error returns, remove unused channels or apps and test the connection before considering a factory reset. A factory reset is a much larger intervention because it removes settings and requires sign-in again; it should not be the first response to a single-app crash.
Roku’s guidance does not establish that a particular Roku model has the lowest crash rate. Roku Ultra can be considered when its platform and required services fit your needs, not as a guaranteed anti-crash purchase.

Google TV: update, force-stop, then involve the developer
Google’s help page is aimed specifically at apps that crash while you use Google TV: Google TV’s app-crash guidance. It recommends updating apps and force-stopping the problem app. If those steps do not resolve the issue, Google says to contact the app developer.
This escalation matters because an app can fail even when the Google TV device and its internet connection are functioning normally. Do not treat the presence of one crashing app as evidence that every Google TV device is defective. Conversely, if multiple unrelated apps fail after updates and a restart, investigate the platform, storage, and network rather than repeatedly reinstalling the same service.
Fire TV: use cache, data, reinstall, and software-update controls
Amazon’s cited support page is the UK version, so menu names and local support details can differ by region: Amazon’s Fire TV app troubleshooting page. It recommends restarting, clearing app cache and data, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and checking for a Fire TV software update. Amazon summarizes the remedy this way: “If your downloaded app is not working as expected, clear the app cache and data, or restart your device.”
Clear data only after trying a restart and an update if you want to avoid an unnecessary sign-in. If one app still fails after a clean reinstall while other services work, use the app developer’s support channel. If several services fail, check Fire TV software and connectivity before blaming a single installation.

What an external device can—and cannot—change
An external player replaces the television’s built-in operating environment with another platform. That can help when the television has an outdated app store, an unresponsive system update, or a platform whose required service is unavailable. It does not guarantee fewer crashes: the same streaming service may still have a defect, your account may still be blocked, and the network path is unchanged.
Buy one for a specific diagnosis or compatibility need:
- Use a different platform: choose an external player when a required app is missing or persistently broken on the television’s built-in system but is available on another platform.
- Replace an aging television interface: an external player can provide a currently supported software environment without replacing the display.
- Do not buy solely on a premium price: the available evidence does not show that a more expensive player or one with more storage has a lower app-crash frequency.
- Keep the network question separate: if weak Wi-Fi or an internet-provider issue is causing launch failures, a new player on the same connection may show the same symptoms.

How to choose after troubleshooting
Choose the same platform only when the hardware or television layer is the suspect
If one app fails but the rest of the platform works, replacing a television with another player that uses the same app ecosystem may not change the underlying defect. An external device is more rational when the television’s software is obsolete, cannot receive a needed update, or lacks the app entirely.
Choose a different platform when you need a controlled comparison
A different operating platform gives you a clean installation and a separate app implementation. That is useful evidence: if the service works on the new platform using the same account and network, the television platform becomes a stronger suspect. It is still not proof that the new device is inherently more reliable.
Choose by your must-have services and region
Write down the services you actually use, including any sports, local, or niche apps. Confirm availability for your country and for the exact model. Apple’s page lists several major services and thousands of additional apps, but that statement does not promise every title or service in every market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse support dates as planning information, not a lifespan promise
Amazon’s published dates are security-update commitments for listed Fire TV models. They are not app-support guarantees, performance tests, or promises that a device will physically last until that date. Amazon explicitly warns: “Please note the update period is not a guarantee as to how long your device will last.” Do not transfer those dates to Roku, Apple, Google TV, or an unlisted Fire TV model.

Storage, software, and network checks that prevent a misleading purchase
Storage
Low storage can produce a visible “Insufficient memory” or “Can’t run app” message on Roku. Freeing space is a diagnostic step, not a reason to assume that buying the largest-storage player will eliminate crashes. Keep only the apps you use and retest after removal.
Software version
Record the device model and software version before contacting support. The exact model matters for update eligibility and for app compatibility. Install platform and app updates before comparing behavior with a replacement.
Network path
Test another app and, where possible, another device on the same connection. If several apps fail to open, or playback repeatedly stops across services, investigate Wi-Fi strength and the internet provider. Roku specifically identifies weak Wi-Fi and provider problems as possible causes. A replacement player connected to the same weak signal may not improve the result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When to contact support
- Contact the app developer when one service remains broken after updating, force-stopping or restarting, and reinstalling or clearing its data, especially if other apps work.
- Contact the platform maker when multiple unrelated apps fail after a system update, restart, storage check, and connection test.
- Contact the internet provider when several devices lose connectivity or streaming fails across unrelated services and the player reports a network problem.
- Include useful evidence: exact device model, country, app name and version if shown, software version, whether the failure occurs at launch or playback, error text, and which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify whether one app or several apps fail.
- Classify the failure as launch, playback, or connection-related.
- Restart the player and install pending app and system updates.
- Use the platform’s force-stop, cache/data, reinstall, and storage controls as applicable.
- Test another app and verify the connection.
- Confirm every must-have service for your country and exact model.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information for that exact model; do not generalize another model’s date.
- Choose an external player only when its platform solves a demonstrated compatibility or television-software problem.
No cited manufacturer page compares app-crash frequency across streaming devices, and no independent, methodologically comparable test is established here. The defensible choice is the player that supports your required services, gives you useful recovery controls, fits your preferred ecosystem, and has support information appropriate to the exact model—not the one marketed as magically crash-proof.
