If you want another story-driven game with memorable characters, choose by what you want more of: relationships that build over time, dialogue shaped by role-playing, a tightly authored narrative, or an RPG where combat is part of the experience. These recommendations offer different kinds of agency and pacing rather than one universal “best” follow-up.
Choose the kind of story you want next
“Story-driven” can mean very different things. A game may draw you in through an ensemble cast, let your skills shape conversations, experiment with how it tells a story, or deliver a more curated arc. The amount of choice also varies: decisions may alter dialogue or a route through the story without changing every major outcome.

For relationships that build across a long arc
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Pick this if you want an ensemble cast and decisions with continuity beyond a single game. The collection bundles the trilogy, and GamesRadar+ describes decisions transferring between its games. That makes it the clearest trilogy-scale option here for following relationships and consequences over a longer arc.

For role-playing through dialogue and skills
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Choose this when you want characterization to emerge through how you play the protagonist. GamesRadar+ describes choices as affecting how you interact with the world and how characters respond. Skills matter to that role-playing: some choices can make particular interactions unavailable. Think of it as shaping your route through the story, not as a promise that every decision changes the ending.
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector
For a character-rich RPG experience centered on conversation and difficult judgment calls, GameSpot points to the game’s storylines, dialogue, and moral challenges. It is a useful fit if the appeal of your last character-focused game was spending time with people and weighing choices, rather than simply following a plot from one action scene to the next.

For a change of pace from combat-heavy games
1000xResist
GameSpot describes this science-fiction story as exploring society and memory through exploration, moral choices, and multiple endings. It has no combat, making it the most clearly narrative-forward choice here if you want to set action aside. Its choices and endings offer agency, but the cited description does not establish that every choice changes the outcome.

Metaphor: ReFantazio
If you want themes and character-driven storytelling alongside a conventional RPG structure, GameSpot describes Metaphor: ReFantazio as a turn-based RPG whose story engages with politics, religion, and community. The turn-based format is a practical filter: choose it if that combat style appeals to you, not just because you are looking for a good story.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Best Narrative at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2026, honoring the best games of 2025. The official awards listing names Despelote, Dispatch, Ghost of Yōtei, and Split Fiction as finalists. The award is a concrete point of recognition, not a guarantee that its style will suit every player.
For freedom or a more curated arc
Baldur’s Gate 3
TechRadar contrasts Baldur’s Gate 3’s open-ended RPG structure with the more linear, curated tale of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if you want room to customize and explore rather than a tightly directed route through the story.
Rank #4
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Choose Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth if you would rather follow a more curated narrative arc. That contrast is about structure, not a claim that one game has better characters or writing: a strongly authored pace and freedom to explore are different pleasures.
