Start with Disco Elysium: The Final Cut if you want the richest dialogue, detective work, and skill-driven character building. Choose Pentiment for a slower historical mystery, Undertale for a compact moral-choice experiment, Baldur’s Gate 3 for expansive party reactivity, or Mass Effect Legendary Edition for one continuous science-fiction saga. Together, these are excellent story-driven RPGs and games where choices matter, but each asks you to play in a very different way.
How to choose your next story-heavy RPG
“Story-driven RPG” can mean several things. In some games, nearly every minute is spent reading conversations and weighing a response. In others, the narrative emerges from character builds, combat decisions, relationships, or the way a single choice follows you for dozens of hours. The five games below cover that full range rather than offering five versions of the same experience.

| Game | Best for | How your decisions matter | Main interaction | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disco Elysium: The Final Cut | Dialogue, detective fiction, internal conflict | Skill allocation and conversational choices shape the investigation | Investigation and dialogue | One self-contained city mystery |
| Pentiment | Historical mystery and long-term consequences | Background choices and community decisions echo across generations | Investigation, reading, illustration, and choice | Decades in one Bavarian community |
| Undertale | Moral choice and replayable outcomes | Mercy, violence, and ending-sensitive decisions alter the resolution | Exploration, encounters, and choice | A compact adventure |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Party reactivity and build freedom | Origin, class, race, companion, and quest choices reshape the journey | Turn-based RPG exploration and combat | A large, multi-region campaign |
| Mass Effect Legendary Edition | Long-form relationships and continuity | Decisions and companion loyalties carry through a trilogy | Third-person action RPG play with dialogue | Three connected science-fiction games |
If you have just finished a game in which conversation was the main mechanic, move to Pentiment for another text-led mystery or to Undertale for a shorter, more experimental form. If you want the world to react to a custom character and a whole party, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the broadest choice. If the appeal is building relationships over a long arc, Mass Effect Legendary Edition provides the most sustained continuity.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut — the closest match for dialogue-first role-playing
Why it stands out
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is the strongest starting point when the attraction is language, investigation, and a protagonist whose personality is assembled through skills. The official description from ZA/UM presents you as a detective with a unique skill system and a whole city block to explore. That framing is important: the central challenge is not simply winning fights, but deciding what kind of detective you are and which parts of your mind you trust.

GamesRadar’s ranking places it first among story-driven RPG recommendations and focuses on Harry Du Bois’s amnesia-driven case. His missing memories give the investigation a personal dimension, while skill investment changes the way he interprets people, clues, and his own thoughts. A build is therefore more than a collection of bonuses. It is a lens through which the case is understood.
How choices work
Conversation choices and skill allocation operate together. A response may open because of a particular capability, fail because another is weak, or lead the detective toward an unexpected interpretation. You can pursue the investigation methodically, follow an eccentric theory, or allow internal conflicts to steer the day. The game gives you room to shape the investigation rather than funneling every player through identical reasoning.
That freedom also makes the game a useful test for what you want from a narrative RPG. If you prefer a clearly marked quest chain and frequent action, its emphasis on reading and interpretation may feel demanding. If you enjoy examining consequences and seeing a role-playing build alter the tone of scenes, it is unusually deep.

Who should play it next
- Players looking for detective fiction in which the case and the protagonist’s identity are intertwined.
- Readers who want skills to affect conversations and investigation, not only combat statistics.
- Anyone asking, “What should I play after Disco Elysium?” who wants another game with consequential dialogue rather than a conventional action RPG.
Its scope is deliberately concentrated: one city mystery rather than a continent-spanning campaign. That focus lets the writing, clues, and internal conflicts receive sustained attention.
Pentiment — a historical mystery where a community remembers your decisions
Setting and premise
Pentiment is the pick for a slower, more text-led experience. Obsidian Entertainment places the story in Tassing and Keirsau Abbey in early-sixteenth-century Bavaria. Steam lists the release date as 14 November 2022 and identifies Obsidian as the developer and Xbox Game Studios as publisher.
You investigate murders while living inside a community whose religious, social, and intellectual tensions matter as much as the immediate crime. The setting is not decorative history. It determines what evidence is available, who can read, which authorities are trusted, and how a decision can be interpreted years later.
Backgrounds and investigation
At the beginning, you choose academic and social backgrounds. Those choices influence how the protagonist approaches people and information, giving the investigation a role-playing dimension without turning every problem into a combat encounter. Reading, observation, illustration, and conversation are central activities, so the pace rewards patience.

Obsidian states that each decision can have a profound impact on the community’s future. The important distinction is timing: consequences are not limited to the next scene. Decisions can play out over generations, changing how later inhabitants understand the past and what kind of community Tassing becomes.
Why it is different from a conventional mystery
The game offers multiple endings, but its defining feature is not simply the number of endings. It asks you to live with incomplete information and make judgments that affect people you may meet only briefly. The mystery is personal, social, and historical at once. A choice that solves an immediate problem may create a different burden for the next generation.
This makes Pentiment a natural follow-up for someone who enjoyed the investigative freedom of Disco Elysium but wants a more grounded historical frame. It is less concerned with a detective’s surreal inner life and more concerned with institutions, memory, belief, and the durability of local decisions.
Choose it when
- You want a mystery that unfolds through reading, conversation, and interpretation.
- You prefer a deliberate pace and are happy to let years pass between major consequences.
- You want choices to shape a community, not only determine a final dialogue branch.
Undertale — a compact RPG built around the decision to fight or spare
The central moral system
Undertale is the best choice when you want a shorter, highly unusual moral-choice experience. GamesRadar describes a human entering a world of monsters, where you can choose not to fight or kill. Mercy, violence, and the way you treat the characters you meet are not side options; they are central to how the story resolves.

The game turns a familiar RPG assumption into a question. Encounters can be approached as conflicts to overcome, but they can also become conversations or attempts to spare an opponent. The result is a system in which the player’s conduct changes the meaning of later events rather than merely changing a numerical alignment.
Replay value and endings
Because choices determine how the story ends, a first playthrough does not exhaust the game’s possibilities. A player who fights through every encounter is not seeing the same narrative as a player who consistently searches for peaceful solutions. The contrast encourages experimentation, but the game is most effective when you make decisions naturally instead of treating every route as a checklist.
Its compact scope is an advantage. The story can establish a cast, test your assumptions about role-playing games, and make a moral choice feel significant without requiring a huge campaign. GamesRadar lists the release date as 15 September 2015 and the platforms as PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

Who will appreciate it
- Players who want choices to alter the resolution directly.
- Anyone interested in a game where refusing to attack is a meaningful mechanical option.
- Readers seeking a concise alternative to a 100-hour party RPG.
Undertale is not a substitute for the investigative density of Disco Elysium or the historical breadth of Pentiment. Its strength is concentration: one unusual premise, a memorable set of encounters, and a moral system that asks you to consider what “winning” means.
Baldur’s Gate 3 — the widest space for character and party reactivity
Build the protagonist you want
Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 when your priority is role-playing freedom across a large campaign. GamesRadar describes a choice between custom and origin characters, along with classes, races, companions, and decisions that shape a journey through the Sword Coast. Those layers interact: who your character is affects what they can do, which companions respond to them, and how quests can unfold.
GamesRadar lists the release date as 3 August 2023 and the platforms as PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. The campaign is substantially broader in geography and party composition than the other games in this list, so it suits players who want a long-term project rather than a compact narrative experiment.
Why party reactivity matters
The party is not just a set of combat tools. Companions bring their own priorities and reactions, while your decisions determine which relationships develop and which paths remain available. Origin characters provide another way to experience the story: you can inhabit a defined personal history or create a custom identity and let the world respond to it.
Turn-based exploration and combat make choices legible. Positioning, class abilities, race-based options, and quest decisions all contribute to the way an encounter plays out. A solution can come from preparation, persuasion, a companion’s capability, or a different interpretation of the objective. That breadth is why it is the strongest recommendation for readers who want the game world to accommodate many styles of role-playing.

Trade-offs of its scale
A large, multi-region campaign asks for a bigger time commitment than Undertale or the focused mystery in Disco Elysium. Its freedom can also create uncertainty: there may be several viable ways forward, and not every consequence is obvious when a decision is made. Players who enjoy discovering their own route will see that as the point; players seeking a tightly authored sequence may prefer one of the smaller games.
Choose it when
- You want class, race, origin, companion, and quest choices to intersect.
- You enjoy turn-based RPG exploration and combat alongside substantial dialogue.
- You want a campaign large enough to support multiple character concepts and different party relationships.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition — one science-fiction story carried across three games
The appeal of continuity
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the right destination when the most important feature is a connected arc. GamesRadar describes Commander Shepard’s trilogy-long struggle against the Reapers, relationships with companions, and a continuing story across three games. Decisions are valuable here because they belong to a longer timeline rather than ending with one campaign.

GamesRadar lists the Legendary Edition’s release date as 14 May 2021. The collection’s defining structure is its three-game science-fiction arc: you meet allies, make commitments, confront the Reaper threat, and continue with the consequences in later chapters.
Relationships as part of the campaign
Companion relationships are not separate from the main plot. Dialogue, loyalty, and the choices you make for the wider mission shape the emotional context of Shepard’s journey. This is the best fit in the list for someone who wants to spend a long time with a recurring crew and see decisions accumulate over multiple installments.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The interaction style is a third-person action RPG combined with dialogue. That balance makes it less text-dominant than Disco Elysium or Pentiment, while its continuing narrative gives choices more room to mature than a compact adventure. You are choosing a long-form relationship with the setting and cast as much as choosing individual missions.
Choose it when
- You want one science-fiction storyline rather than a self-contained mystery.
- Companion relationships and loyalty matter as much as exploration.
- You are willing to follow a narrative across three connected games.
Which game fits your preferred kind of agency?
If dialogue and inner conflict matter most
Pick Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. Its detective structure and skill system make conversation the primary form of action, and Harry Du Bois’s amnesia gives character development direct relevance to the case.
If consequences should span decades
Pick Pentiment. Your background and decisions are tied to Tassing and Keirsau Abbey, and the effects can be felt by later generations rather than only by the people in the current scene.
If you want the clearest moral fork
Pick Undertale. The decision to fight, spare, or kill is the game’s organizing principle, and the ending reflects the way you treated the world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you want maximum build and party freedom
Pick Baldur’s Gate 3. Custom or origin characters, classes, races, companions, and quest choices combine to support many different approaches across a large campaign.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
If you want relationships that continue
Pick Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Its companion stories and Shepard’s Reaper conflict are designed to continue from one game into the next.
A practical play order after a hidden-gem discovery
- Begin with the closest tonal match. After a dialogue-heavy discovery, try Disco Elysium: The Final Cut or Pentiment. Both make investigation and conversation central, but the former is an urban detective story while the latter is historical and communal.
- Use Undertale as a shorter reset. Its compact adventure lets you explore a different model of choice without committing to a large campaign.
- Move to Baldur’s Gate 3 when you want breadth. Choose it for a custom build, a defined origin, a reactive party, and turn-based encounters across multiple regions.
- Save Mass Effect Legendary Edition for a sustained arc. It rewards the time needed to follow Shepard and the companions through three connected games.
This order is optional, not a ranking. The best next game is the one whose type of agency you want now: interpreting clues, protecting a community, practicing mercy, directing a party, or carrying relationships into the future.
What makes these “games where choices matter” rather than branching for its own sake?
Meaningful choice is not measured only by the number of endings. In this group, each game attaches consequences to a different layer of play:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Character interpretation: Disco Elysium: The Final Cut makes skills influence how the detective understands the case and himself.
- Historical memory: Pentiment lets decisions alter a community whose future extends beyond the current generation.
- Moral conduct: Undertale makes fighting, sparing, and killing central to the outcome.
- Systemic role-play: Baldur’s Gate 3 combines identity, class, race, companions, and quests so that different builds can produce different journeys.
- Long-term continuity: Mass Effect Legendary Edition carries decisions and relationships across a trilogy.
That distinction should guide your choice more than genre labels. Two games can both be called RPGs while asking you to exercise agency in completely different ways.
