Octopath Traveler II is the closest match if you want another story-led RPG with an ensemble cast, HD-2D visuals, character-specific actions, job development, and tactical turn-based battles. For a different emphasis, choose Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster for job-driven combat planning, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake for a classic fantasy quest, or Octopath Traveler 0 for a player-created hero and town rebuilding.

For the closest match: Octopath Traveler II
Octopath Traveler II most directly carries forward the first game’s recognizable combination of eight protagonists, HD-2D presentation, Path Actions, and turn-based combat built around Break and Boost. It follows eight new travelers in Solistia, with character-specific actions and job and skill development offering the same broad ingredients that define the series.

Choose it if what you want is more of Octopath’s particular structure, rather than merely another fantasy RPG with turn-based battles. The Switch and Switch 2 editions are distinct versions: Nintendo says the Switch 2 edition is Switch 2-only, and save data cannot be shared between it and the original Switch version. For a different Octopath story: Octopath Traveler 0
Octopath Traveler 0 stays in the series but shifts the emphasis toward player authorship and rebuilding. Its story centers on restoration and retribution in Orsterra; you create the protagonist, use Path Actions, and rebuild a hometown. It is a natural alternative if those systems appeal more than having a fixed group of eight leads, but its setup should not be mistaken for a repeat of the first game’s eight-protagonist format.

For jobs and battle planning: Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster
Pick Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster if you care most about tactical choices within each turn and a wide range of jobs. Its Brave command spends BP to take extra actions; Default increases defense while building BP for later. Nintendo describes the remaster as having more than 20 jobs. The story follows Tiz and Agnès as they try to close the Great Chasm and free the crystals.
Square Enix describes the Bravely Default series as a point of genesis for Octopath Traveler, which makes this a relevant alternative for fans interested in the design lineage as well as the combat. The HD Remaster released for Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. A physical Game-Key Card edition is also listed by Square Enix’s Asia news portal; it requires an internet download for the full game, so the card itself does not contain the complete game. For a classic fantasy journey in HD-2D: Dragon Quest III
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake trades Octopath’s multi-lead structure for a classic hero’s quest. It is the first chronological story in the Erdrick Trilogy: you play Ortega’s child, setting out to defeat Baramos. Nintendo describes turn-based battles, party skills, and a vast world. Its HD-2D presentation makes it the clearest fit here if the visual style matters but you would rather follow a traditional fantasy adventure.
The Switch edition runs on Switch 2 and has a free update with options that prioritize graphics or frame rate/graphics. Buyers considering the Erdrick Trilogy Collection should inspect the exact bundle: the Switch 2 collection includes the Switch version of Dragon Quest III alongside Switch 2 versions of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, while the Switch collection contains different editions. Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster suits players who want a more retro presentation and job changing at the center of character development. Nintendo describes it as a 2D pixel remaster of the 1990 game, in which four adventurers are chosen by crystals. Optional boosts let you turn off random encounters and adjust experience gain, useful settings if you want to tune the original-style progression. - Want Octopath’s ensemble, HD-2D, Path Actions, and Break and Boost? Start with Octopath Traveler II.
- Want to create the lead and rebuild a home? Choose Octopath Traveler 0.
- Want jobs and deliberate action-economy decisions in battle? Choose Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster.
- Want a classic party-led fantasy quest in HD-2D? Choose Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
- Want an older pixel-art RPG with job changing? Choose Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster.
Check the edition before buying for Switch 2
Switch 2 compatibility is not identical across these games. Some are Switch 2-only editions with separate save rules; others are original Switch games that run on Switch 2. The Trilogy Collection also bundles different editions depending on the console version.
