There is no SteelSeries-certified number that is best for every Apex Pro, game, or player. A reliable starting point is a low-but-controllable actuation point on movement keys, a deeper point on keys you hit accidentally, and Rapid Trigger enabled only where quick release and re-pressing improve control. Change one variable at a time, test in a low-stakes practice session, and keep the fastest profile that remains dependable for you.
The exact controls depend on your keyboard’s generation and form factor. The Apex Pro TKL 2023 (wired and wireless), legacy Apex Pro models, OLED-equipped boards, Apex Pro Mini, and Apex Pro Gen 3 do not necessarily expose the same ranges or software options.

What “best” means on an Apex Pro
Actuation is the depth at which a switch registers a key press. On the Apex Pro TKL 2023, SteelSeries explains that a lower actuation level activates with a lighter, shorter press, while a higher level requires more travel before activation. Short travel can make repeated movement inputs feel quicker, but it also leaves less physical margin against an accidental brush. A deeper point adds that margin at the cost of a longer press.
Rapid Trigger is a separate response mode. Instead of waiting for a fixed reset point, it resets as the key is released; SteelSeries describes the behavior as “Resets the moment you release a key.” The useful setting is therefore not automatically the most sensitive one. It is the most sensitive level at which your normal finger movement does not create unwanted releases or repeated inputs.

These are practical recommendations inferred from the documented behavior of the controls, not a measured tournament advantage. The official pages reviewed do not publish a universal competitive preset or a benchmark proving that one numeric setting improves gaming performance for everyone.
Identify your exact Apex Pro before changing anything
Read the name shown in GG or on the keyboard packaging. Note the generation, whether the board is full-size, TKL or Mini, whether it has an OLED and media button, and whether you are using on-device controls or GG Engine. This prevents applying a legacy millimeter value to a newer board that uses a different scale.

If a low point causes unintended movement, raise it one level at a time. Do not compensate by changing every key simultaneously; you will not know which change fixed or caused the problem.
How to change actuation on the Apex Pro TKL 2023
Use the keyboard without GG
- Press and hold the SteelSeries Function key.
- Press O or I to move through the ten actuation levels.
- Watch the number-row indicator for the selected level.
- Release the Function key and test the keys in a practice range or text field.
- Repeat in small changes until the key activates reliably without resting-finger presses.
The O/I shortcut is documented for both wired and wireless TKL 2023 models. It changes the selected actuation level without requiring the software.
Use GG when you need per-key profiles
Connect the keyboard, open GG and select the keyboard in Engine. Choose the actuation controls presented for that device, adjust the relevant keys, and save the profile if your model and software offer profile storage. SteelSeries changes GG layouts as devices and firmware evolve, so use the labels displayed for your exact keyboard rather than following a menu path from a different generation. If a control is missing, verify the device model, firmware and GG version before assuming the keyboard is defective.
Legacy Apex Pro actuation values
The legacy support article for the Apex Pro TKL and Apex Pro Full Size gives an explicit level-to-depth mapping. It marks level 5 (1.8 mm) as the default. These figures are model-specific; they are not a universal conversion for the TKL 2023, Apex Pro Mini or Gen 3.

Set these values with the Engine slider or numeric field on the legacy models, following SteelSeries’ legacy Apex Pro support procedure. The page says to update to GG 27.0 or later for its described update path.
OLED menu controls
On the OLED-equipped Apex Pro and Apex Pro TKL models covered by the manual, hold the OLED menu button for four seconds. Select ACTUATION with the volume roller and choose level 1–10. Pressing an OmniPoint switch previews the selected actuation point on the OLED, which is useful for checking a key before leaving the menu. How to enable and tune Rapid Trigger
Toggle Rapid Trigger
- Press SteelSeries key + T. SteelSeries documents this shortcut for Apex Pro keyboards.
- On TKL and full-size Apex Pro keyboards with the documented OLED controls, you can alternatively hold the media button, open Actuation, and click the roller to toggle Rapid Trigger.
- Check the indicator. On the described models, number-row lighting and an OLED lightning icon show the status.
- Test the affected keys in a practice environment before using the profile in a match.

Rapid Trigger is most useful on keys where you repeatedly release and re-press: movement, counter-strafing or another action that depends on quick transitions. Begin with a moderate sensitivity available in your device’s control and perform deliberate taps, partial releases and normal resting movements. Increase sensitivity only when you can do that consistently. If the key releases while your finger is still settling, or registers an unintended second press, reduce sensitivity and retest.

Apply Rapid Trigger selectively. A feature that helps a movement key can be distracting on a rarely used ability key. Keep the ordinary actuation point and Rapid Trigger behavior conceptually separate: changing the activation depth does not by itself prove that a rapid-release setting is appropriate.
Rapid Trigger is not Rapid Tap
SteelSeries describes Rapid Tap as snapping to the latest key press and positions it for strafing keys. Rapid Trigger instead concerns how quickly a key resets as it is released. They can appear next to each other in current device software, but they solve different input problems. Enable only the behavior your game and control technique require, and verify how your particular model exposes each feature.
A step-by-step tuning workflow
- Record the hardware. Write down the exact product name, generation, layout and whether it has an OLED. Note whether changes are being made on the keyboard or in GG.
- Make a baseline profile. Leave unfamiliar keys at their current values and change only the movement cluster first. Save or name the profile if your device supports profiles.
- Lower movement actuation cautiously. Move one level toward lighter activation, then test walking, stopping, diagonal movement and repeated taps. If a resting finger causes movement, move one level deeper.
- Set high-consequence keys deeper. Adjust jump, crouch, sprint, interact and modifiers only after movement is stable. Increase travel when accidental activation matters more than speed.
- Add Rapid Trigger where release speed matters. Start at a sensitivity that feels consistent, then try faster settings. Back off immediately if normal finger motion creates repeated or premature inputs.
- Test outside competition. Use a training range, private server or a typing/input tester. Check both intentional presses and the moments between presses, when accidental activation is easiest to notice.
- Change one variable per test. Keep notes such as “W one level deeper” or “Rapid Trigger less sensitive on A.” This creates a clear cause-and-effect trail.
- Keep the fastest reliable profile. A theoretically faster setting that causes missed releases, unwanted movement or double inputs is slower in real play.
Choosing settings by game and play style
Fast movement and strafing
Prioritize a low, controllable point on the directional keys. Rapid Trigger may help when your technique depends on releasing one direction and immediately pressing the opposite direction. Match the settings on opposing keys and spend time practicing clean releases; asymmetrical or oversensitive keys can make movement feel inconsistent.

Use more travel on jump, crouch, interact and ability keys if your fingers or palm often touch them. Keep Rapid Trigger off those keys unless you have a specific repeated-input need. Reliability is more valuable than a shorter press when one accidental activation has a large cost.

Mixed workloads
Create separate profiles when your keyboard supports them: one for movement-heavy games, one for slower or ability-heavy games, and one conservative profile for general typing. Check that the active profile is the intended one after reconnecting or switching applications.

Fixing common problems
Movement triggers while your finger is resting
- Raise that key’s actuation depth one step.
- Reduce Rapid Trigger sensitivity if the release is also firing unexpectedly.
- Test the key by resting, lifting and lightly repositioning your finger without intentionally pressing.
- Repeat the adjustment only on the affected key or cluster.
Rapid Trigger creates repeated or missed inputs
- Lower the sensitivity (use a less aggressive setting).
- Check that the keycap and switch are not obstructed.
- Return to the last profile that behaved consistently, then change only Rapid Trigger.
- Test deliberate taps and partial releases separately; a setting can pass one test and fail the other.
The expected control is missing in GG
- Confirm the exact generation and connect the keyboard directly rather than through an unreliable hub.
- Install the current GG release and any offered device firmware update.
- Reopen Engine and select the keyboard itself, not a similarly named profile.
- Check SteelSeries’ model-specific support page because feature availability is not identical across generations.
TKL 2023 has ghost inputs after configuration changes
Calibration is troubleshooting, not a routine tuning step. SteelSeries’ procedure for the Apex Pro TKL 2023 is:

- Install the current GG version.
- Remove the magnetic wrist rest.
- Disconnect the keyboard, and disconnect the wireless dongle if applicable.
- Hold SteelSeries key + I + O while reconnecting the keyboard to enter calibration.
- Fully press each OmniPoint key as prompted.
- Save the calibration with the same key combination.
Follow the complete Apex Pro TKL 2023 calibration procedure if the issue persists. Do not use calibration as a substitute for choosing a comfortable actuation point.
What the official evidence does—and does not—establish
SteelSeries documents what the actuation levels, Rapid Trigger and related features do, plus the controls for specific models. It does not publish a measured universal “best” preset, a named professional configuration that applies to every Apex Pro, or a statistic showing a guaranteed performance gain. Your final profile should therefore be judged by repeatable input quality: can you activate, release and re-press the intended key without accidental events?
Recommended final profile
For most players, begin with a low but controllable actuation level on WASD or the equivalent movement cluster, a medium-to-deep level on keys that are easy to hit accidentally, and Rapid Trigger only on keys where rapid release is part of the technique. Tune sensitivity away from the most aggressive setting when it causes instability. Keep a conservative saved profile so you can recover quickly, and never transfer the legacy 0.2–3.8 mm table to a newer generation unless SteelSeries explicitly documents that mapping for your model.
