For the fastest Steam downloads, leave the download-speed limit off unless you need to reserve bandwidth for something else. For smoother online co-op, let Steam pause downloads while you play, then troubleshoot the game’s actual network connection if lag continues. Remote Play is a separate case: it streams video and audio from a host PC, so its network and quality settings matter more than Steam’s download region.

Choose settings for the problem you have

Steam downloads, native online multiplayer and Steam Remote Play use the network differently. A download setting can control Steam’s content transfer, but it cannot guarantee a lower ping to a co-op server. Remote Play sends the host computer’s audio and video to another device, so a stable connection between those devices is central.

Situation What to adjust first What the setting affects
Downloading or updating a game Download limit, queue, schedule and region Steam’s content delivery and when transfers run
Native online co-op Pause competing transfers; check the game’s server or peer latency Gameplay communication with the game’s server or other players
Steam Remote Play or Steam Link Host connection, Wi-Fi conditions, streaming quality and bandwidth The stream from the host PC to the receiving device

Set Steam downloads to use available bandwidth—or share it

Adjust the download limit

Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and inspect Limit download speed. Leave the limit off if you want Steam to use the available capacity. Set a limit when a download is competing with a live game, a call or other household traffic. A cap reserves bandwidth for other activity; it does not make Steam download faster.

Steam may show transfer rates in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. Those units are not interchangeable: one byte contains eight bits. Compare like units before deciding whether Steam’s displayed rate matches your plan.

Manage the queue and update timing

Use the Download Manager to reorder queued items and schedule updates for convenient hours. For an individual game, open its Properties > Updates to adjust automatic-update behavior and priority. Starting a game can override a scheduled update window if that game needs an update before it launches. Steam Support explains download scheduling and update settings.

Keep downloads from interfering with online co-op

Understand Steam’s default behavior

Steam pauses downloads when you launch a game by default to prioritize game network activity. Steam Support puts it this way: “Steam automatically pauses your downloads when a game is launched in order to prioritize the network activity for the game itself.” Steam Support: Downloads automatically pause when launching a game.

Allow downloads only if you accept the trade-off

To keep a download running while you play, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay. That can keep transfers moving, but the download may compete with gameplay and other traffic. If co-op becomes choppy, turn the option off or cap Steam’s download rate. There is no universal cap: the right choice depends on available bandwidth, other household use, the game and the connection.

Check the game’s actual network path

For native co-op, check latency to the game’s server or peer if the game displays it, and use that game’s own region or server controls where available. Steam’s download region selects a content-delivery path; it is not necessarily the multiplayer server region, and changing it is not a reliable matchmaking shortcut. Steam notes that background programs using bandwidth can contribute to lag and choppy gameplay. Steam Support’s network troubleshooting guidance recommends considering other bandwidth-heavy activity as well.

If lag persists after pausing large transfers, investigate local Wi-Fi congestion, the router and game-specific server conditions. A Steam download setting cannot by itself correct high latency between players and a game server.

Troubleshoot Steam Remote Play and Steam Link

Remote Play streams a game running on a host PC to another device. These steps target the stream’s local network path and do not guarantee better native online co-op latency or faster Steam downloads.

Stabilize the host’s connection

When supported, connect the host PC directly to the router with Ethernet. Steam identifies wireless interference—and a setup where the host transmits wirelessly while the router retransmits to a wireless client—as common causes of poor streaming. Ethernet is a troubleshooting step for the connection, not a way to increase the speed of your internet plan. Steam Support: Remote Play.

If you need Wi-Fi, test 5 GHz from the actual place you play and reduce other large transfers or streams during diagnosis. A 5 GHz signal can have less range, so the best band depends on distance, obstructions and interference.

Use the overlay and tune one setting at a time

  1. Enable the Remote Play performance overlay and watch its network-time graph when a hitch occurs. Large spikes in variable network time point to a streaming-network problem.
  2. Set streaming quality to Balanced or Fast to trade image quality for lower bandwidth use.
  3. In advanced settings, begin with a low streaming bandwidth limit and raise it gradually until hitches appear; then return to the last stable setting. Steam gives 3 Mbit/s as an example starting point for this tuning process, not a universal setting for every network or game.
  4. Enable network prioritization if that option is available. Router QoS or device-priority settings may also help prioritize the host and receiving device, but router labels and results vary. Verify the effect during actual play.

Steam’s Remote Play guidance covers the performance overlay and streaming adjustments.

Tell a network slowdown from a slow installation

A fluctuating download graph does not necessarily mean your internet connection is slow. Steam may throttle the reported download rate to match the rate at which it can perform installation tasks, which use CPU and disk resources. An SD card’s write speed can also affect total installation time.

Steam Support explains: “The reported download speed isn’t necessarily representative of your download capacity because the download can be throttled to match the speed at which Steam can perform the other tasks related to installing a game.” Steam Hardware – Network + Wi-Fi Troubleshooting.

When a download slows during unpacking or writes, compare Steam’s download and disk activity, check the target drive, and run a separate connection speed test. That helps distinguish a network or content-server limit from a local installation bottleneck.

When to try another Steam download region

If a download appears stuck or Steam reports a delivery error pointing to a server problem, select the region closest to you in Steam > Settings > Downloads. If needed, test the next closest region, then switch back if it does not help. Treat this as a download troubleshooting experiment, not a reliable way to change multiplayer matchmaking or reduce co-op ping. Steam Support’s download troubleshooting guidance covers download-region changes.
