Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the lowest practical Steam Link latency on Android, connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet, connect the phone over a clean 5 GHz Wi‑Fi network, and tune streaming quality and bandwidth upward only while the performance graph remains stable. Start with a conservative resolution and bandwidth, then raise them one step at a time. Test hardware encoding on the host instead of assuming it is faster, because results depend on the graphics card.
This approach addresses the whole path between the game and your screen. A fast internet plan cannot fix a congested local Wi‑Fi link, a wireless host, an overloaded GPU encoder, or a phone that cannot decode the selected stream smoothly.

Recommended starting configuration
Use this profile before changing individual options. It favors a stable frame stream over maximum image quality; once it works, increase one setting at a time.
| Setting | Starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Host connection | Ethernet from the computer to the router | Removes one wireless hop and avoids the host and phone competing for the same radio airtime. |
| Android connection | 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, near the router | Usually has less interference and more available capacity than congested 2.4 GHz. |
| Quality preset | Fast, then Balanced | Reduces bandwidth and network load while you establish a reliable baseline. |
| Bandwidth | Begin at 3 Mbit/s, then increase gradually | Steam’s general support guidance uses 3 Mbit/s as a conservative starting point. |
| Resolution | Phone’s preferred resolution if stable; otherwise 1280×720 | Lowering resolution reduces work for the network, encoder and Android decoder. |
| Hardware encoding | Test enabled and disabled | The best choice varies by host GPU and driver. |
| Overlay | Performance graph enabled | Shows whether a change affects network timing, encoding or decoding. |
There is no official setting that guarantees a particular millisecond latency or sharpness improvement on every phone and PC. Steam’s guidance is a tuning method: change one variable, replay the same scene and keep the setting only if the overlay and your controls improve.

Check compatibility before tuning
Android and Steam requirements
The Steam Link app for Android supports Android 5.0 and newer. It requires a computer running Steam, and the Android device and host computer must be on the same local network. A 5 GHz wireless router is recommended for the phone. These requirements describe app compatibility; they do not guarantee that an older phone, router or GPU can sustain a high-resolution stream.
Controller support
Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 and higher, Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile as supported input devices. Verify the phone’s Android version and physical connector before buying or connecting a controller. A controller can make controls more comfortable and consistent, but it cannot remove Wi‑Fi congestion or reduce delay caused by the host encoder.
Fix the network path first
Wire the host PC
Connect the computer running Steam directly to the router with Ethernet whenever possible. Steam Support says it “highly recommend[s] making sure your computer is directly connected to the router with Ethernet.” This is more important than a high advertised internet speed because Steam Link normally carries the stream across your home network, not through the public internet.
If the PC and phone are both wireless, the stream must travel over the air from the computer to the router and then over the air again from the router to the phone. Steam describes this arrangement as almost always performing poorly because the two transmissions compete and can collide in the same radio space. Wiring only the host removes one of those wireless transmissions and is usually the single most effective change for stutter and input delay.
Use 5 GHz for the Android device
Join the phone to the router’s 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz when the signal is strong. A clear 5 GHz channel at short range generally matters more than the headline speed printed on a router box. Through walls and at long distances, 5 GHz can lose strength faster; in that situation, move closer to the access point or improve coverage instead of forcing a weak connection.

Reduce local interference
During testing, pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, video streams and other devices that consume wireless airtime. Steam identifies competing wireless applications as a source of interference. If the router allows it, select a less-congested 5 GHz channel and give the phone traffic priority with Quality of Service (QoS) or a device-priority rule. Rebooting a router can clear a temporary fault, and updating its firmware is sensible when connectivity problems continue.
Steam notes that channel interference can reduce data rate by more than 50 percent. This is an undated support observation, not a promise that changing channels will halve or double your result; inspect the overlay after the change.

Keep the network local and simple
Make sure the phone and computer are associated with the same home network rather than a guest network that blocks device-to-device traffic. Avoid a phone VPN, hotspot mode or a wireless extender during diagnosis unless the extender is unavoidable. Each extra hop adds another queue and another opportunity for retransmissions. Once the direct router connection is stable, you can add network equipment back one piece at a time if necessary.
Enable the Steam Link performance graph
Open Steam Link on Android, enter its streaming or advanced streaming settings, and enable the performance graph (the exact label can vary with the app and Steam client version). Leave it visible while you test a repeatable game scene. The graph separates network timing from host encoding and Android decoding, so it is more useful than judging a single blurry frame.
Steam says large spikes in the cyan network line indicate highly variable network time and commonly coincide with video stutter or freezing. Note what the graph does when you turn a setting on, replay the same camera movement and turn it off again. A change that feels better but creates larger or more frequent spikes is not an improvement.

Read the symptoms by subsystem
- Network spikes: suspect Wi‑Fi interference, a wireless host, competing traffic, a distant phone or a busy channel.
- Encoding pressure: suspect the host GPU, its driver or the selected hardware/software encoder.
- Decoding pressure: suspect the phone chipset, resolution, frame rate or thermal throttling.
- Stable graph but delayed controls: check controller connection, game-specific input settings and whether the display is adding processing delay.
Tune quality and bandwidth without guessing
Choose a quality preset
Steam Link offers quality choices commonly labeled Fast, Balanced and Beautiful. Steam says Fast or Balanced reduces streaming bandwidth and network load at the cost of visual quality. Select Fast first when the stream is unstable. Once the graph is clean, move to Balanced and then Beautiful only if the network, encoder and decoder remain steady.
Do not change the preset and bandwidth limit at the same time. If both move, you cannot tell which one fixed or caused a problem. Keep a short note of each working combination, especially if several people use the network.
Find the highest stable bandwidth
- Open Steam Link’s advanced streaming settings and locate the bandwidth limit.
- Start at 3 Mbit/s, the starting point in Steam’s general guidance.
- Play the same section for several minutes while watching the performance graph.
- Increase the limit one step and repeat. Stop when network spikes, freezes or delayed input appears.
- Return to the last value that remained stable. Choose Automatic only when you want Steam to restore its default behavior rather than enforce a known ceiling.
A higher limit can preserve detail in dark scenes and fine text, but it cannot create capacity that the Wi‑Fi path does not have. If raising bandwidth produces spikes, lower it before lowering every other setting. Conversely, if the graph is stable but the picture is soft, bandwidth may be the first variable worth increasing.
Balance resolution and decoding load
Keep the phone’s native or preferred resolution only when network timing and decoding stay stable. A higher resolution carries more pixels and can increase both bitrate and work for the host encoder and Android decoder. Steam’s low-framerate troubleshooting gives 1280×720 as a practical fallback; use it when a higher mode causes dropped frames or decoding spikes.
Change resolution in one step, then replay the same scene. If 1280×720 removes stutter, keep it while you investigate the host encoder and Wi‑Fi. After those are healthy, try the next higher mode. A sharp but intermittently frozen picture is less usable than a slightly softer stream that responds immediately.

Test hardware encoding on the host
Steam allows hardware encoding to be enabled or disabled in streaming settings. The correct choice depends on the host graphics card, driver and current workload, so treat it as an experiment rather than a universal recommendation.
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance says NVIDIA hardware encoding usually performs better than software encoding, while software encoding usually performs better than AMD hardware encoding. Those are general troubleshooting leads, not guarantees for every generation or driver. Intel and other GPU combinations can also behave differently from the examples in the support guidance.
- Record the current encoder setting and the game scene you will use for comparison.
- Play the scene with hardware encoding enabled and watch encode timing, network spikes and frame delivery.
- Switch only the hardware-encoding option, restart the stream if prompted, and replay the same scene.
- Keep the option that gives the more stable graph and responsive controls at your chosen resolution and bandwidth.
If software encoding improves the stream, the host GPU’s hardware path or driver may be the bottleneck. If hardware encoding is clearly better, leave it enabled and investigate other causes only if problems remain. Updating the graphics driver can help, but do not change driver, resolution and bandwidth together because that removes your comparison baseline.
Use configuration profiles for different network conditions
The following profiles show how to combine settings around a bottleneck. They are starting points, not benchmark results.
| Profile | Host | Phone Wi‑Fi | Quality and resolution | Bandwidth approach | Encoder test | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stable baseline | Ethernet | Strong 5 GHz | Fast; preferred resolution | Start at 3 Mbit/s and raise slowly | Compare both modes | First setup or unknown network |
| Congested network | Ethernet | 5 GHz on a less busy channel | Fast; 1280×720 if needed | Lower to the last non-spiking value | Use the mode with lower encode pressure | Spikes, freezing or many active devices |
| Clean network, soft picture | Ethernet | Strong 5 GHz | Balanced, then Beautiful if stable | Increase one step at a time | Keep the smoother option | Graph is clean but detail is insufficient |
| Wireless host constraint | Host on Wi‑Fi | 5 GHz, very strong signal | Fast; 1280×720 fallback | Use a conservative limit | Test both modes | Ethernet is temporarily impossible |
The wireless-host profile is a compromise. If it remains unreliable after reducing quality and bandwidth, run Ethernet to the computer before buying faster internet service.

Step-by-step tuning procedure
- Confirm the prerequisites. Update the Steam Link app if an update is available, verify Android 5.0 or newer, launch Steam on the computer and place both devices on the same network.
- Connect the host by Ethernet. Plug the computer into a LAN port on the router. If this is impossible, place the host on the strongest available 5 GHz connection and recognize that two wireless hops can remain a fundamental limitation.
- Join the phone to 5 GHz. Select the router’s 5 GHz SSID, stay near the access point and avoid a weak signal through several walls.
- Quiet the network. Pause downloads, cloud sync and high-bitrate video. Temporarily disconnect or pause devices that saturate the same access point.
- Enable the graph. Turn on the performance overlay in advanced streaming settings and record a baseline scene.
- Select Fast quality. This gives the network and decoder headroom while you establish stability.
- Set conservative bandwidth. Begin at 3 Mbit/s, test, and increase in small steps until the first repeatable symptom; then return to the previous stable value.
- Set resolution. Use the phone’s preferred resolution if the graph remains stable. Select 1280×720 when higher resolution creates low frame rate or decoding problems.
- Test hardware encoding. Change only that option, replay the same scene and keep the smoother result.
- Raise quality carefully. Try Balanced, then a higher bandwidth or resolution, one change per test. Stop as soon as spikes or delayed controls return.
- Pair a controller last. Confirm that the controller is supported by the phone and Android version. Compare input consistency only after the stream itself is stable.
Troubleshoot common Steam Link problems
Input feels delayed
- Check the cyan network line for spikes before changing picture quality.
- Wire the host PC and move the phone closer to the 5 GHz access point.
- Pause other wireless traffic and choose a less-congested channel.
- Lower the bandwidth limit or quality preset if spikes coincide with input delay.
- Test hardware encoding; an overloaded encoder can delay frames even when Wi‑Fi appears quiet.
- Use a supported controller and check its connection. A controller change cannot compensate for a congested network.
Video stutters or freezes
Large, irregular network spikes point to interference or competing traffic. A stable network graph with encode pressure points to the host GPU or encoder. A stable network and encode graph with dropped frames on the phone points to decoding load; lower resolution to 1280×720 and retest. Restart the router or update its firmware if connectivity remains erratic after removing traffic.
Video is blurry
First check whether the stream is deliberately using Fast quality or a low bandwidth limit. If the graph is stable, move to Balanced and increase bandwidth gradually. If the picture becomes sharp only when the stream stutters, the network cannot sustain that combination; keep the last stable value and improve the host connection or radio environment instead.
Frame rate is low even on a clear network
Lower resolution and compare hardware with software encoding. The phone may be struggling to decode the selected stream, or the host may be spending too long encoding it. Also check whether the PC game itself is rendering at a low frame rate; Steam Link cannot transmit frames that the game never produces.

Confirm Steam is running, both devices are on the same non-isolated home network, and the router is not placing the phone on a guest network that blocks local discovery. Temporarily disable a phone VPN or hotspot mode, then restart Steam Link and Steam. If discovery works only after changing networks, inspect router client-isolation settings.
What settings cannot fix
Steam Link does not turn a weak radio signal into a strong one. A faster broadband subscription does not repair interference inside the home, and a premium controller does not shorten network transit time. Likewise, increasing bitrate cannot restore detail that the host game renders poorly, and changing Android resolution cannot fix a host GPU that is already saturated.
Use the performance graph to identify the limiting subsystem, then change the smallest number of variables needed to relieve it. Because menu labels, codec choices and behavior can vary by Steam client version, phone chipset, GPU, router and local Wi‑Fi conditions, validate every final setting on the device and network where you will actually play.
Quick Recap
