The best starting point is simple: connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet, connect the Android phone to a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi network, and begin with Steam Link’s Balanced or Automatic behavior. If the stream stutters, use the performance overlay to determine whether network timing, host encoding, or phone decoding is responsible. Reduce bandwidth or resolution until play is smooth, then raise one setting at a time.
There is no single ideal bitrate or resolution for every home. The practical limit depends on the computer, phone, Wi-Fi signal, interference, and other traffic on your network.

What you need before tuning Steam Link
Steam Link streams a game rendered by a computer running Steam to the Android app. It is not cloud gaming: the host PC must be powered on, signed in to Steam, and able to run the game. The phone and computer should be on the same local network for initial pairing.
- An Android phone running Android 5.0 or newer. Steam’s Android support page does not promise compatibility with every phone model.
- A computer with Steam installed and the game available in its library.
- A wireless router with 5 GHz support. Steam recommends an 802.11ac router; 5 GHz 802.11n is the next choice in its guidance.
- The Steam Link app installed on the phone and permission to discover devices on the local network.
- A controller only if the game is more practical with physical controls. Touch controls can work for some titles.
Pair the phone and host
- Turn on the host PC, open Steam, and sign in.
- Connect the phone and host to the same home network. Avoid starting with a guest network, public hotspot, workplace network, or any connection that requires a browser login.
- Open Steam Link on Android and follow its on-screen pairing process. Confirm the code shown on the phone in Steam on the computer if prompted.
- Run the app’s connection test before launching a demanding game. If the computer is not discovered, use the connectivity checks later in this guide instead of changing image quality settings.
Improve the network before changing picture quality
Network quality is usually the highest-value adjustment. Steam specifically recommends that the computer be connected directly to the router with Ethernet. When the host also uses Wi-Fi, every frame competes for wireless airtime twice: once from the computer to the router and again from the router to the phone.

- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Use Ethernet for the host PC
Run an Ethernet cable from the computer to a LAN port on the router or access point. This removes one wireless hop and makes network timing more predictable. If cabling is impossible, place the computer close to the access point and use a strong, stable signal rather than relying on a weak connection at the edge of coverage.
Prefer 5 GHz on the phone when the signal is strong
In general, 5 GHz has more usable capacity and less congestion than 2.4 GHz, but its shorter range means a distant phone may perform worse. Select the 5 GHz network when the phone receives a strong signal; move nearer to the access point if necessary. A stable 2.4 GHz connection is preferable to a weak 5 GHz connection.
Reduce interference and competing traffic
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and other high-volume transfers while playing. Move the router or phone away from dense obstructions and crowded electronics. Steam notes that interference from neighboring networks can reduce data rate by over 50%; that is Steam’s stated guidance, not a universal result for every home. Choose a less crowded channel where your router allows it, and avoid enabling client or access-point isolation that prevents devices on the same network from communicating.
Steam Link settings and their trade-offs
Menu names can change between Steam and Android app versions, so use the current in-app streaming or advanced-client labels rather than following an old screenshot. The following controls address different limits.

| Control | When to lower it | When to raise it | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality preset | Stutter, freezes, or a congested network | The stream is stable and the picture is visibly soft | Balanced or Fast reduces bandwidth demand at the cost of visual detail; higher quality uses more capacity. |
| Bandwidth limit | Network-time spikes or congestion | Stable timing with unused network capacity | A lower ceiling reduces traffic. Steam suggests starting at 3 Mbit/s for a constrained connection, then increasing gradually until problems appear and stepping back. |
| Resolution limit | Low frame rate, decoding strain, or an unstable stream | Stable play with enough capacity for more detail | Fewer pixels require less data and processing. Steam’s low-frame-rate guidance uses 1280×720 as a troubleshooting example, not as a universal Android recommendation. |
| Host hardware encoding | Encoding-related low frame rate or poor image quality | A different encoder is visibly smoother on the host GPU | Results depend on the graphics card, drivers, and Steam version. Test enabled and disabled states separately. |
| Client hardware decoding | The phone shows decoding errors, judder, or unusual frame pacing | The phone decodes the stream reliably with hardware acceleration | Steam lists disabling client hardware decoding as a troubleshooting step; it can increase CPU load, so treat it as a diagnostic change. |
| Performance overlay | Whenever the cause of stutter is unclear | Leave it off after diagnosis if it distracts from play | It exposes timing and frame information so you can distinguish network variability from host or phone processing. |
A reliable tuning procedure
1. Start with a stable baseline
After pairing, leave quality at Balanced or Automatic and use the app’s default resolution and bandwidth behavior. Launch a game that normally stresses the host and play for several minutes in the same room where you intend to use the phone. Do not change multiple controls at once; otherwise you will not know which adjustment helped.
2. Turn on the performance overlay
Open the Steam Link client’s advanced streaming settings and enable the performance overlay. The exact path varies by app release, but the control is in the streaming-client settings rather than the game’s graphics menu. Reproduce the hitch while watching the overlay, then disable it when testing is complete.
3. If timing spikes, reduce network demand
Steam describes large spikes in the overlay’s cyan network-time line as highly variable network time, commonly associated with stuttering or freezing. First confirm that the host is on Ethernet and the phone is on a strong 5 GHz signal. Stop competing transfers, improve the phone’s position, and try a lower quality preset or bandwidth limit. For a particularly constrained connection, Steam’s method is to begin at 3 Mbit/s, increase slowly until hitches occur, and return to the last stable value. That number is a troubleshooting starting point, not the best bitrate for every Android phone.
4. Raise bandwidth only while timing remains stable
Once play is smooth, increase the bandwidth limit in small increments. Test the same game scene for several minutes after each change. If the cyan network-time trace becomes erratic or input starts arriving late, return to the previous value. Automatic restores the client’s default behavior when manual limits make results worse.

5. Adjust resolution after the network is healthy
Resolution changes the amount of detail that must be encoded, transported, and decoded. If a stream remains unstable after network improvements, try a lower limit; Steam’s low-frame-rate article cites 1280×720 as one diagnostic option. If 720p is smooth but a higher setting is not, the lower resolution may be the right compromise for that phone or network. Increase resolution only after stability is established, and change no other control during the comparison.
6. Test host encoding and client decoding separately
Steam says changing host hardware-encoding choices can improve quality depending on the graphics card. If the overlay shows network timing is steady but the video still has low frame rate or uneven delivery, test the host encoder setting, restart the stream, and compare the same scene. If the phone appears to be the bottleneck, test the client hardware-decoding option. Keep the setting that produces consistent frames on your particular GPU, driver, phone, and app version; there is no universal winner.
7. Stop when the picture is good enough
Streaming quality has diminishing returns. Once controls feel responsive and the image is clear at the phone’s viewing distance, additional bitrate or resolution can create more stutter without a meaningful visual benefit. Record the stable settings so an app update or router change can be diagnosed against a known baseline.

Network variability
Large, repeated cyan network-time spikes point toward changing delivery time rather than a simple lack of average bandwidth. Investigate Ethernet, Wi-Fi band and signal, interference, competing traffic, and manual bandwidth limits. A speed test that reports a high average internet rate does not rule out local wireless jitter.

Steady network timing but poor motion
If network timing is relatively flat while the game remains jerky, look at the host’s game frame rate, encoder behavior, and resolution. A demanding game can fail to render frames quickly even when the network is excellent. Lowering in-game graphics settings or the Steam Link resolution can help distinguish rendering and encoding limits from transport problems.
Phone-side decoding problems
When the host and network appear healthy but the phone shows judder, delayed frames, or decoding errors, test client hardware decoding as Steam recommends. Because software decoding can consume more phone CPU and battery, revert if it causes heat or worse frame pacing.

Frequent stutter or freezing
- Check the cyan network-time trace for spikes.
- Put the host on Ethernet and move the phone closer to the 5 GHz access point.
- Pause other traffic and select a less congested channel.
- Lower the quality preset or bandwidth limit, then test before changing resolution.
- If network timing is stable, investigate host frame rate, hardware encoding, and phone decoding.
Stable video that looks too soft
Raise the quality preset or bandwidth slightly, test, and then consider a higher resolution. Make one change at a time. If any increase introduces spikes or delayed controls, return to the last stable setting; visual sharpness is not worth an unreliable stream.
Input feels delayed
Latency can come from variable network time, a busy Wi-Fi channel, host rendering, or a display pipeline that is buffering heavily. Start with the overlay and network fixes rather than immediately maximizing image quality. Wired Ethernet at the host and a strong nearby 5 GHz signal remove two common sources of delay.

Low frame rate with no obvious network spikes
Check the game’s own frame rate and the host GPU load. Try a lower Steam Link resolution, then test host hardware-encoding choices. If only one phone exhibits the issue, compare client hardware decoding states and make sure the app and Android system are current.
When Steam Link cannot find or connect to the PC
Discovery failures are different from a paired stream that merely looks poor. Confirm that both devices are on the same local network and that the router is not using guest isolation, access-point isolation, or another rule that blocks device-to-device traffic. Public, school, workplace, captive-portal, and login-required networks may prevent Remote Play entirely.
Steam lists these Remote Play ports: UDP 27031 and 27036, plus TCP 27036 and 27037. Firewall or router rules should allow the host and client to communicate on those ports when required. Do not open ports as a first response to low image quality on an already working local connection; investigate them when the phone cannot discover or connect to the computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsControllers and Android compatibility
A controller is optional and does not improve picture quality, bandwidth, or latency. It can make games designed for a gamepad much easier to play on a phone. Steam lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, and DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer among supported options, and names Razer Kishi and Raiju Mobile as supported Android input devices. Support establishes that the device family is relevant; it does not guarantee that every phone, case, firmware version, or current controller model will fit or pair correctly.
Before buying, verify the exact phone dimensions, USB-C or Bluetooth requirement, Android version, button layout, and whether the phone case must be removed. Compare controllers by physical fit and controls, not by expected streaming quality.
Choose a starting profile
| Your situation | Starting point | Next adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Host on Ethernet, phone nearby on strong 5 GHz | Balanced or Automatic quality with defaults | Increase bandwidth or resolution one step at a time if the overlay stays stable. |
| Host and phone both on Wi-Fi | Balanced or Fast quality | Move the host to Ethernet before chasing higher image quality. |
| Weak or distant 5 GHz signal | Use the strongest reliable band and lower bandwidth demand | Improve router or phone placement; 2.4 GHz may be preferable if 5 GHz is unstable. |
| Network timing spikes | Lower quality or bandwidth and stop competing traffic | Check interference, channel crowding, and local device placement. |
| Stable network but low frame rate | Lower resolution temporarily | Check game performance, host hardware encoding, and client decoding. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the highest quality before confirming that the network is stable.
- Changing bitrate, resolution, encoder, and decoder simultaneously, which hides the cause of a problem.
- Assuming an internet speed test measures the local Wi-Fi timing that Steam Link needs.
- Using a guest network with client isolation and then troubleshooting image settings.
- Treating Steam’s 3 Mbit/s example or 1280×720 example as universal recommendations.
- Assuming a supported controller list guarantees fit or compatibility with every current phone.
Bottom line
For most homes, Ethernet to the host plus strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi to the Android phone is the best foundation. Begin at Balanced or Automatic, use the overlay to identify the bottleneck, lower bandwidth or resolution when timing or frame rate breaks down, and raise one control at a time only after the stream is stable. The correct final settings are the highest quality your particular PC, phone, signal, and household network can sustain without stutter.
