The best starting point for Steam Frame is 2160×2160 per eye at 90 Hz. If your PC cannot deliver frames consistently, keep frame pacing stable by lowering the refresh target or enabling half-rate throttling before cutting resolution. Use a separate SteamVR profile for each game, because a lightweight title and a demanding PC VR title do not have the same performance headroom.

What Steam Frame is—and why the settings behave differently

Steam Frame is a standalone virtual-reality headset running SteamOS. Valve designed it primarily for low-latency streaming of a Steam library from a PC, while it also runs standalone VR and non-VR experiences and supports SteamVR and OpenXR content. That streaming-first design means perceived image quality depends on more than the headset panel: the PC render resolution, frame cadence, encoder and wireless path all contribute.

The hardware provides pancake lenses, 16 GB of RAM and foveated streaming. Valve lists supported refresh rates from 72 to 144 Hz, with 144 Hz identified as experimental. The headset uses fixed high-resolution panels; the per-eye value you choose in SteamVR controls how much of that panel’s width the PC renders, rather than changing the physical panel itself.

There is no independently measured universal best preset. The values below are a practical starting framework based on Valve’s documented controls and example. Your GPU, game, router and wireless conditions determine whether a setting is sustainable.

The four SteamVR controls that matter most

Resolution Per Eye

Resolution Per Eye controls the width component of the rendered image for each eye. Valve documents 1728×1728 as the default when no per-application preference is specified. Raising the value can make fine text and distant geometry look cleaner and can reduce visible aliasing, but it increases the amount of work the PC must render and stream.

SteamVR presents the setting as a per-eye resolution. Treat the number as a workload control, not a guarantee that every pixel on the panel is being rendered natively in every scene. A game may also apply its own scaling, and foveated streaming can vary detail by region.

Frame Limit or Refresh Rate Override

The frame-limit or refresh-rate override sets the minimum refresh-rate target for the application. Valve’s documented unspecified default is 72 Hz. A higher target can make head and controller motion appear more continuous and can reduce the time between display updates, but only when the PC and streaming path can sustain it.

Refresh rate and rendered frame rate are related, not identical. The display may refresh at 90 Hz while the game is delivered at a half-rate 45 FPS cadence, or it may refresh at a higher rate while missed render deadlines produce uneven motion. Judge the result by frame pacing and visible consistency rather than by the largest number shown in a performance overlay.

Frame throttling

Half-framerate throttling deliberately targets one half of the selected refresh rate. At 90 Hz that means 45 FPS; at 72 Hz it means 36 FPS; at 144 Hz it means 72 FPS. A stable half-rate target can look smoother than an unstable native target that repeatedly misses its deadline.

Use throttling when a title cannot hold the selected refresh rate but can reliably deliver the half-rate cadence. It is a stability tool, not a way to create detail that the GPU cannot render.

Motion Smoothing

Motion Smoothing can be off, on or always on. A per-application choice overrides the global setting; otherwise the global setting applies. Smoothing can help conceal occasional missed frames, but synthesized motion is not the same as a fully rendered frame and may introduce artifacts around fast-moving objects or controllers. Compare it with smoothing off in the same scene before deciding which presentation you prefer.

A strong starting profile: 2160×2160 at 90 Hz

Set 2160×2160 per eye and 90 Hz first when the host PC has adequate headroom. This balances the headset’s high-resolution display with a refresh target that is less demanding than the experimental 144 Hz mode. Watch frame pacing while moving through the most demanding part of the game, not only its opening menu.

Valve’s own documented example uses this resolution and refresh combination with half-framerate throttling to 45 FPS and Motion Smoothing off. That example is a useful stability reference, not a promise that every game or computer will perform identically.

  1. Open SteamVR’s video controls for the individual application.
  2. Set Resolution Per Eye to 2160×2160.
  3. Set the application refresh or frame-limit override to 90 Hz.
  4. Leave frame throttling disabled initially if the game can hold the target; if pacing repeatedly breaks, test half-rate throttling at 45 FPS.
  5. Leave Motion Smoothing off for the first comparison, then test it only if missed frames remain visible.
  6. Play the heaviest scene for several minutes and keep the profile only if motion remains even and the streamed image stays stable.

The order matters. Changing all four controls at once hides the cause of a problem. Resolution primarily changes sharpness and GPU load; refresh changes the cadence the system must sustain; throttling and smoothing change how the system behaves when native rendering falls short.

Three practical profiles for different priorities

Profile Resolution Per Eye Refresh target Frame strategy Best use
Balanced starting point 2160×2160 90 Hz Native first; 45 FPS half-rate if needed High detail with a manageable target on a capable PC
Stability baseline 1728×1728 default 72 Hz Native first; 36 FPS half-rate if needed Demanding games or systems that miss higher targets
Experimental high-refresh 2160×2160 144 Hz (experimental) Native only when sustained; 72 FPS half-rate is the mathematical half-rate target Testing very smooth cadence on hardware with substantial headroom

The table describes starting profiles, not benchmarked guarantees. The 1728×1728 and 72 Hz values correspond to Valve’s documented defaults when no per-application preference is set. The 144 Hz option is explicitly experimental, so treat compatibility and stability as variables rather than assumptions.

How to tune a game without making it blurry

1. Establish a clean baseline

Use the per-application SteamVR profile rather than changing a global value first. Start with the 2160×2160, 90 Hz combination. Keep Motion Smoothing off and do not enable half-rate throttling until you have observed native pacing. This gives you a clear reference for later changes.

2. Check the demanding scene, not the average

Walk through the area with the most geometry, effects or AI. A menu or quiet corridor can hide missed deadlines. Look for repeated judder, uneven controller motion or a cadence that alternates between smooth and delayed. Those symptoms point to frame pacing trouble even when a displayed FPS number looks high.

3. Lower the refresh target before sacrificing detail

If 90 Hz is not sustainable, test 72 Hz while keeping 2160×2160. The lower target gives each rendered frame more time and may preserve the clarity that matters most for cockpit instruments, text and distant objects. If the game still misses, test 36 FPS half-rate at 72 Hz.

4. Reduce per-eye resolution only after cadence changes

Move toward the 1728×1728 default when the GPU remains overloaded after a lower refresh target or stable half-rate mode. Make one change at a time and revisit the same demanding scene. The image should become softer gradually; an unexpectedly blurry result suggests that another scaling control or the streaming path is involved.

5. Reconsider Motion Smoothing last

Enable Motion Smoothing per application only after you know the native and half-rate behavior. Compare a scene with thin geometry, fast hands or moving foliage, where interpolation artifacts are easiest to notice. If artifacts are distracting, leave smoothing off and use a lower, stable target instead.

Why Steam Frame can look blurry

Per-eye resolution is too low

When Resolution Per Eye is left at the 1728×1728 default, text and distant edges can look less defined than at 2160×2160. Raise the value for that title and test again, provided the PC has rendering headroom.

The game is missing its render target

A high nominal resolution does not help if the GPU repeatedly misses deadlines. The resulting uneven frames can be perceived as blur during head movement. Try 90 Hz instead of a higher target, or use a stable half-rate mode, before increasing quality settings elsewhere.

The streaming path is softening or destabilizing the image

Steam Frame is designed around low-latency PC streaming. A weak or congested wireless path can produce softness, instability or hitching that resembles a resolution problem. Check the dedicated wireless or wired route between the PC, router and headset, then retest with the same SteamVR profile. Keep the game settings unchanged while isolating the network variable.

Multiple scaling layers are active

SteamVR’s per-eye resolution is only one possible scaling point. A title may have its own render-scale option, and the streaming system may adapt detail through foveated streaming. Change one layer at a time so you can identify which control actually affects clarity.

How to stop hitching, lag and uneven motion

Separate render hitching from network hitching

  • Render hitching: the PC cannot deliver frames at the selected target. Lower the refresh target, test half-rate throttling, or reduce per-eye resolution.
  • Network hitching: the rendered frames are ready but the wireless path introduces delay, packet loss or bitrate instability. Inspect the streaming route and reduce competing traffic before changing visual quality.
  • Interpolation artifacts: Motion Smoothing is generating synthetic frames that do not match fast scene changes. Compare with smoothing off and a lower native or half-rate target.

Use a controlled recovery sequence

  1. Return the affected game to one known profile, such as 2160×2160 at 90 Hz with smoothing off.
  2. Replay the same demanding scene and note whether the hitch repeats at the same location.
  3. If it repeats with consistent timing, lower the refresh target to 72 Hz.
  4. If native delivery is still uneven, test half-rate throttling: 45 FPS at 90 Hz or 36 FPS at 72 Hz.
  5. If the cadence is stable but the image remains soft or freezes briefly, investigate the wireless streaming path rather than lowering resolution again.
  6. Only after those checks, reduce Resolution Per Eye to the 1728×1728 default and retest.

This sequence prevents a network problem from being misdiagnosed as a GPU problem and prevents a GPU problem from being masked by increasingly aggressive smoothing.

Refresh rate, rendered FPS and latency: what you should actually feel

A 90 Hz display updates on a 90 Hz schedule, but the application may render at 90 FPS, 45 FPS through half-rate throttling, or an inconsistent cadence. Native 90 FPS can provide the most direct motion response when sustained. Stable 45 FPS at 90 Hz can be preferable to an unstable attempt at 90 FPS because repeated misses create visible judder.

The same relationship applies to other targets: 72 Hz paired with a stable 36 FPS half-rate mode, or the experimental 144 Hz mode paired with its 72 FPS half-rate target. These are cadence relationships, not promises about input latency or image quality. The game engine, render queue and streaming delay still matter.

Per-game profiles beat one global preset

A simple title may hold 2160×2160 at 90 Hz natively, while a graphically demanding PC VR game may need 1728×1728 at 72 Hz or a half-rate target. Keep settings per application so one game’s compromise does not degrade every other title.

Use a consistent naming or note-taking scheme: record the resolution, refresh target, throttling state and Motion Smoothing state for each game. When a driver, game update or network change alters behavior, you can restore the last known profile and change a single variable.

Network and streaming checks before changing image quality

Because low-latency PC streaming is Steam Frame’s primary design goal, inspect the path whenever the image is unstable. Confirm that the headset is using the intended wireless streaming adapter or dedicated route, that the PC is connected through the expected network path, and that other traffic is not saturating the connection. The exact best bitrate depends on the game, GPU encoder, router and radio conditions; there is no universal bitrate value established here.

Keep the visual profile fixed while checking the network. If hitching disappears when congestion is removed, restore the sharper profile instead of permanently lowering per-eye resolution. If the problem persists on a clean path, return to refresh, throttling and render-resolution tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Chasing the highest refresh rate: 144 Hz is experimental and requires sustained performance. Use it as a test, not a default.
  • Raising resolution and refresh together: this multiplies GPU pressure and makes the source of a hitch unclear. Change one control at a time.
  • Leaving a global profile for every title: create per-application settings so light and demanding games can use different targets.
  • Using Motion Smoothing to hide every miss: interpolation can create artifacts. First test a lower native or half-rate target.
  • Assuming a high FPS number means smoothness: repeated missed deadlines are more important than a short-lived peak.
  • Blaming resolution for network instability: verify the wireless streaming path before accepting a permanently softer image.

A concise decision framework

  1. Want the sharpest image? Try 2160×2160 per eye at 90 Hz, then verify frame pacing in the hardest scene.
  2. Motion is uneven? Lower the refresh target to 72 Hz or test half-rate throttling before reducing resolution.
  3. The game still cannot hold cadence? Move to the 1728×1728 default and retest.
  4. Frames feel stable but the stream hitches? Investigate the wireless or wired streaming path and competing network traffic.
  5. Artifacts appear around moving objects? Compare Motion Smoothing off with a stable native or half-rate profile.
  6. Considering 144 Hz? Treat it as experimental and keep it only if the complete PC-and-network chain remains consistent.

For most systems, the practical endpoint is not the maximum number in a menu. It is the per-game combination that keeps frame delivery even while preserving enough per-eye resolution for the text and detail you actually need to see.
