Best Steam Frame controller, display, and per-app settings for Android games

Use the bundled Steam Frame controllers first, choose a conventional Xbox-style gamepad when an Android title expects standard buttons, and favor a stable refresh rate over the highest available setting. Steam Frame can stream Windows and Linux games from a PC, but it also runs native ARM64 and Android APK experiences. That split determines where you configure input and graphics: streamed PC games use Steam Input and the game’s Steam settings, while native Android games follow Android’s controller, display, and scaling behavior.

For per-app changes, Android’s own controls cover basic controller reassignment, while an optional desktop utility called Frame Control advertises per-Android-app resolution and text-size profiles. It requires Developer Mode, a developer password, and a computer on the same trusted network, so treat it as an advanced tool rather than a required part of Steam Frame setup.

How Steam Frame games are different

Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone virtual-reality headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam Library from a PC, while also supporting standalone virtual-reality and non-virtual-reality experiences. Its supported execution models include Windows and Linux PC titles, native ARM64 software, and Android-based APKs.

Those models can look similar when launched from the headset, but they do not share one universal settings system:

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  • Streamed PC games run on the computer and receive input through Steam. Their controller templates, button prompts, and unusual bindings are handled with Steam Input and the individual game’s Steam configuration.
  • Native Android games run on the headset. The APK sees Android’s controller interfaces, display timing, and scaling rules. Android’s Game Controller settings can remap buttons or swap the left and right joysticks, but a Steam Input layout does not automatically fix an Android app’s assumptions.
  • Native ARM64 applications are another standalone category. Check the application’s own input documentation before assuming that an Android-specific remap or a PC template will apply.

Identify the execution model before changing anything. If a title is being streamed from a PC, start in Steam. If it is an Android APK installed on the headset, start with Android’s controller and display behavior.

Which controller should you use?

The bundled Steam Frame controllers are the best first choice for games designed around the headset. Steam says they should pair automatically when turned on, avoiding an additional Bluetooth pairing step. They also provide the motion-oriented input model that a VR title may expect.

For an Android game built around a conventional gamepad, an Xbox Wireless Controller is a strong default. Steam’s official controller-pairing flow explicitly supports Xbox gamepads, as well as Steam, PlayStation, and Switch Pro controllers. The familiar ABXY arrangement can make menus easier to follow, but the right choice ultimately depends on the layout the APK expects and the ergonomics of the controller you already own.

Controller option Input model Connection and setup Best fit Remapping path
Bundled Steam Frame controllers Motion-oriented VR controls with physical buttons and sticks Turn them on; Steam says they should pair automatically Native Steam Frame VR and titles designed for the headset’s controllers Steam Input for streamed PC games; the Android app’s own behavior for APKs
Xbox Wireless Controller Conventional gamepad with familiar ABXY labeling Add it through Steam Settings > Controller > Add Controller; Android also supports Bluetooth gamepads Android games that advertise or assume a standard gamepad Steam Input for PC streaming; Android Game Controller settings for native APKs
PlayStation or Switch Pro controller Conventional gamepad with a different button-label and stick arrangement Add it through Steam’s controller flow; Android supports wired and Bluetooth controllers Players who prefer that hardware or already have one paired Use the game’s expected layout, then remap in Steam Input or Android when labels or axes do not match
Wired USB gamepad Conventional gamepad without a wireless radio Connect it to the headset with a compatible wired adapter or cable; Android recognizes supported wired controllers Short sessions, testing, or situations where wireless pairing is unreliable Android Game Controller settings for supported remaps; Steam Input for streamed titles

Do not choose a controller solely because it connects. The important questions are whether the game expects motion input or a standard pad, whether its button prompts match your controller, and whether the connection is practical in the headset’s play environment.

When the bundled controllers are the right answer

Start with them for a VR title, a game that uses hand or motion gestures, or any native experience whose instructions refer to Steam Frame controller buttons. Automatic pairing also makes them the quickest way to establish a known-good baseline before troubleshooting an app.

When an external gamepad is better

Use a conventional pad when an Android title is designed for a console-style layout, when a game’s menus are easier with a traditional D-pad and ABXY buttons, or when you need to keep both hands in a fixed position. An external gamepad is also useful for non-VR games streamed from a PC, provided its Steam Input layout is configured for that title.

Pair controllers and correct button assignments

Let the bundled controllers pair automatically

  1. Turn on the Steam Frame headset.
  2. Turn on each bundled controller.
  3. Wait for Steam Frame to complete its automatic pairing.
  4. Open a simple menu or calibration screen and confirm that both sticks, triggers, and primary buttons respond before launching a long session.

If automatic pairing does not complete, power-cycle the affected controller and headset, then check whether another device has already claimed the controller. Avoid changing several variables at once; establish whether the headset can see the controller before creating a custom layout.

Add an external controller through Steam

  1. Open Steam Settings.
  2. Select Controller.
  3. Choose Add Controller.
  4. Follow the visual prompts for the controller family you are adding.
  5. Return to the game’s controller configuration and verify the button prompts in a menu.

Steam’s pairing flow includes Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, and Steam controllers. A controller can be paired successfully yet still present the wrong labels or axis orientation to a particular game; pairing and layout correction are separate steps.

Connect a controller to a native Android game

Android supports both wired and Bluetooth controllers. Use Bluetooth when you want a cable-free setup and your gamepad supports it; use a wired connection when you want to avoid radio pairing or battery variables and the headset’s port and adapter support the controller.

  1. For Bluetooth, put the gamepad into its pairing mode and select it from the headset’s Android Bluetooth controls.
  2. For a wired pad, connect it with a compatible cable or adapter and wait for Android to expose the device.
  3. Launch the Android game and test movement, face buttons, triggers, and menu navigation.
  4. If labels or axes are wrong, open Android’s Game Controller settings. Android documents options to swap button assignments and to swap the left and right joysticks.
  5. Return to the game and test the exact actions that previously failed. Some apps read only a subset of controller inputs, so a remap that fixes one menu may not change every action.

Android setting names can vary by Steam Frame firmware. Look for the Game Controller section rather than assuming that a Steam Input template will appear for an APK.

Set Steam Input separately for each streamed game

Steam’s game pages expose controller-support indicators and a controller-configuration button. Use that per-game configuration instead of assuming one global layout will suit every title.

  1. Open the game’s page in Steam and select its controller configuration button.
  2. Check whether the title expects a standard gamepad, mouse-and-keyboard emulation, or motion input.
  3. Start with the official layout or the closest built-in gamepad template.
  4. Change only the actions that are missing, mislabeled, or awkward. Keep the rest of the known-good template intact.
  5. For an unusual menu or a title that mixes touch-only and gamepad controls, save a separate layout rather than overwriting your general template.
  6. Test the layout in a low-risk menu. Confirm navigation, confirmation, cancellation, camera control, triggers, and any actions you changed before beginning a long session.

A game may show a controller-support indicator and still need a custom arrangement. Indicators describe the game’s expected support; they do not guarantee that every physical controller uses the same labels or that an Android APK follows Steam’s layout system.

Choose a display refresh rate for Android games

Do not treat the largest refresh-rate number as an automatic quality setting. Android lets an application request a preferred frame rate with Surface.setFrameRate(), but the system may keep the current display rate because of battery-saver behavior, another higher-priority surface, or hardware limits. The game must continue to work at the rate Android actually selects.

For a player, the practical goal is consistent frame pacing and readable motion, not a request that the headset cannot sustain.

A sensible starting profile

  1. Leave the headset in its normal display mode before opening the game.
  2. If the game offers a stable frame-rate target, choose the closest sustainable refresh rate rather than automatically selecting the maximum.
  3. Use an in-game frame cap when available. A steady cap that the headset can maintain is preferable to an unstable high target that repeatedly misses presentation times.
  4. Play for several minutes in the busiest scene you normally encounter. Watch for uneven motion, repeated judder, or sudden drops rather than judging the setting from a quiet menu.
  5. Keep the profile that produces consistent pacing and acceptable battery use.

Android warns that frequent frame-rate requests can cause frame drops during transitions. Avoid cycling display modes while playing. Change the mode once, allow the transition to finish, and then evaluate the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an app may not get the rate it requests

  • Battery saver: the system can hold a lower mode to reduce power use.
  • Competing surfaces: another higher-priority surface can influence the selected display rate.
  • Hardware limits: the headset may not support the requested mode under the current conditions.
  • App behavior: the game may request a preference but deliver frames at a different cadence.

When the app’s frame production and the display rate differ, Android recommends presentation timestamps and its Frame Pacing library to developers. Those are application-side tools; players generally benefit by selecting a stable in-game cap and avoiding aggressive mode switching.

Change resolution and text size for one Android app

Some Android titles are rendered too small in a headset, cropped by an unusual aspect ratio, or unnecessarily demanding at their default resolution. Frame Control is a third-party desktop utility that advertises per-Android-app resolution and text-size controls, APK installation, Steam Frame ratings, and headset-status tools.

What you need before using Frame Control

  • A Steam Frame headset with Developer Mode enabled.
  • A developer password configured on the headset.
  • A computer connected to the same trusted network as the headset.
  • A current, trusted release of Frame Control from a source you trust.

The utility is optional. Steam Frame and Android do not require it for ordinary controller pairing or display operation. Because it can install APKs and change per-app behavior, review its current release, permissions, and trust requirements before connecting it to your headset.

Per-app setup workflow

  1. On the headset, enable Developer Mode using the system settings supplied by your current Steam Frame firmware.
  2. Set the requested developer password and record it securely. Do not reuse a password that protects another account.
  3. Connect the computer and headset to the same trusted network. Avoid performing developer operations over an untrusted public network.
  4. Open Frame Control on the computer and connect to the headset using the developer credentials it requests.
  5. Select the Android app you want to adjust. Change resolution only enough to solve the specific problem: cropping, unreadably small rendering, or unnecessary rendering load.
  6. Adjust text size separately when menus or labels are difficult to read. Text scaling can improve legibility without asking the app to render every pixel at a higher resolution.
  7. Launch the app and check menus, gameplay, and any overlay. If an element is clipped or scales incorrectly, revert the last change.
  8. Record the working profile for that app so you can restore it after an update or a second experiment.

Per-app settings are preferable to a blanket resolution change when only one title has a scaling problem. They also let you leave undemanding apps at their normal profile instead of increasing the headset’s workload everywhere.

Recover from a bad scaling profile

  1. Close the affected app completely rather than judging a profile while it is still using cached surfaces.
  2. Return that app to its recorded working resolution and text size.
  3. Relaunch and test a menu before changing another setting.
  4. If the app remains cropped or unreadable, remove the custom profile and return to the headset’s normal display behavior.
  5. Only then try a smaller, single-variable adjustment.

Keep a simple note of each app’s working resolution, text size, and date changed. This makes it possible to undo a change after an APK update without guessing which setting caused the problem.

Controller and display choices by game type

Game situation Controller choice Display approach Per-app action
Native VR title using hand or motion interactions Bundled Steam Frame controllers Normal display mode first; prioritize consistent motion Use Frame Control only if a specific menu needs scaling
Native Android game with console-style controls Xbox-style or another conventional gamepad that matches the expected labels Choose the closest sustainable refresh rate and cap the game if possible Use Android Game Controller remapping for labels or stick order; use Frame Control for text or resolution issues
Streamed PC game with standard controller support Bundled controllers if the title supports them, otherwise an external gamepad Configure the game’s own frame and streaming options; do not expect Android APK settings to apply Use the game’s Steam controller configuration and save a per-game layout
Android title with tiny menus or cropped UI Whichever controller the game recognizes reliably Keep a stable display mode while diagnosing scaling Apply a per-app resolution or text-size profile, then record and test it

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The bundled controller will not respond

  • Confirm that the controller is powered on and close enough to the headset for pairing.
  • Restart the controller and headset, then wait for automatic pairing before opening the game.
  • Test the controller in a system menu. If it works there but not in one title, the problem is likely that title’s input model or Steam Input layout.

An external gamepad pairs but the buttons are wrong

  • For a streamed PC title, open the game’s Steam controller configuration and select the layout that matches the physical pad.
  • For an Android APK, open Android’s Game Controller settings and swap button assignments or joystick sides when those options correct the mismatch.
  • Test in a menu after each change so you know which adjustment fixed the issue.

The Android game ignores a controller

  • Check whether the APK supports a standard gamepad rather than only touch or motion input.
  • Try the other connection method: Bluetooth if you used wired, or wired if Bluetooth was unreliable.
  • Close and relaunch the game after Android has recognized the controller. Some apps inspect available inputs only at startup.

Changing refresh rate makes motion worse

  • Stop switching modes repeatedly.
  • Return to the normal display mode and use a stable in-game frame cap.
  • Evaluate a busy gameplay scene rather than a static menu.
  • Remember that Android can reject or modify an app’s requested rate because of battery saver, competing surfaces, or hardware limits.

Frame Control cannot connect

  • Confirm that Developer Mode and the developer password are enabled on the headset.
  • Verify that the computer and headset are on the same trusted network.
  • Check the utility’s current release and connection requirements before changing firewall or network settings.
  • If you do not need per-app scaling, remove the utility from the troubleshooting path and use the headset’s normal settings.

A practical setup order

  1. Identify whether the game is streamed from a PC or is a native Android APK.
  2. Start with the bundled Steam Frame controllers for VR, or a conventional gamepad for an Android title that expects one.
  3. Confirm basic input in a menu before editing bindings.
  4. For streamed games, configure Steam Input on that game’s page and save a dedicated layout when needed.
  5. For Android games, use Android Game Controller settings only when button labels or joystick axes need correction.
  6. Leave the display in its normal mode, then select the closest sustainable refresh rate and a stable frame cap if the game offers one.
  7. Use Frame Control only for a specific Android app that needs resolution or text-size changes, and keep a record of the working profile.

This order isolates input, game-specific bindings, display timing, and scaling. It prevents a controller remap from being mistaken for a refresh-rate problem or a text-size change from masking an APK that does not support gamepad input.
