Best SSD Upgrades for PS4 (Base, Slim and Pro) and How to Install One

The right internal upgrade for any PS4 is a standard 2.5-inch SATA SSD that is no thicker than 9.5 mm and has at least 160 GB of capacity. A SATA III SSD is physically compatible with the console’s drive bay, but the PS4 controls the real throughput. PS4 Pro has SATA III support and therefore offers more interface headroom than the original PS4 family; base and Slim owners should still expect faster loading, but not desktop-SSD benchmark speeds or a guaranteed percentage improvement.

Replacing the drive is a practical process: back up saves, shut the console down completely, remove the correct cover and drive caddy for your model, transfer the caddy screws to the SSD, reinstall the hardware, and use a USB drive containing Sony’s official system-software reinstallation file. The console is then initialized, so you restore saves and reinstall games afterward.

What SSD works in a PS4?

Use a conventional 2.5-inch SATA drive. The internal bay is designed for the same general form factor used by many laptop hard drives and SATA solid-state drives.

  • Size: 2.5 inches.
  • Thickness: no more than 9.5 mm, according to the iFixit PS4 teardown.
  • Capacity: at least 160 GB.
  • Connection: SATA. A SATA III SSD can be used in the bay, with the console determining the effective interface speed.
  • Not the documented internal format: NVMe M.2 drives are not the form factor identified for the PS4’s replaceable internal bay.

Search for a 2.5-inch SATA SSD for PS4 rather than an M.2 module or a desktop 3.5-inch drive. Keep the original hard drive until the replacement has been installed, initialized and tested; it is useful as a fallback if a problem occurs.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why thickness and connector orientation matter

A drive can have the correct capacity and interface yet fail to fit if its enclosure is too thick. Stay at or below 9.5 mm. Before tightening the caddy screws, compare the SSD’s connector position with the old drive and the guide for your exact console revision. The connector must face the same direction so it mates with the console’s internal SATA connector when the caddy slides back in.

Which PS4 models benefit most?

Original PS4 and PS4 Slim

Both models accept a user-replaceable 2.5-inch SATA drive. Their console storage interface provides less headroom than the PS4 Pro’s SATA III connection, so a very fast SSD cannot operate at its full desktop potential. Even so, the SSD is the faster replacement option described in the iFixit Slim guide, and the practical reason to install one is shorter loading and installation activity rather than a higher frame rate.

PS4 Pro

The PS4 Pro supports SATA III and uses a simple, non-proprietary replaceable drive. That gives an SSD more interface headroom than it has in the original PS4 family. The improvement still varies by game, level, patch, and task, so no single percentage applies to every Pro console or title.

Cross-model compatibility

A 2.5-inch SATA III SSD remains backward-compatible in the practical sense that it fits the PS4 SATA bay. The interface limits the speed the console can use, but it does not require you to buy a special “PS4-only” SSD. Compatibility depends on the physical dimensions, connector and capacity requirements above.

How to choose capacity, endurance and warranty

Capacity Best fit What to check
500 GB Replacing a failed drive while keeping a small installed library Usable space is lower after system allocation; verify the drive is at least 160 GB and no thicker than 9.5 mm.
1 TB The general-purpose choice for most upgrades Confirm 2.5-inch SATA construction, warranty terms and current price.
2 TB Keeping more large games installed between deletions Check physical thickness, warranty and price; the console still determines interface throughput.

Capacity does not make games render faster. It gives you more room for installations and updates, while the SSD’s access characteristics can reduce loading time. Choose the size that fits your library and budget instead of paying for interface specifications the console cannot fully exploit.

Warranty and endurance

Compare the manufacturer’s warranty period and published endurance rating when two otherwise suitable drives are close in price. The supplied PS4 compatibility material does not establish a single endurance or warranty value that applies to every SSD, so record the exact model and terms before buying. Keep your saves backed up regardless of the drive’s rating: an endurance specification is not a substitute for a backup.

Example drive from the installation guide

The iFixit Slim replacement guide lists the Crucial BX500 1TB SSD as an example and describes a 2.5-inch SATA SSD as an optional replacement that will be faster than a hard drive. Treat that model as an example of the required form factor, not as proof that it is the only suitable choice. Check current stock, regional warranty coverage and dimensions for any model you consider.

Prices and availability

SSD prices, stock and retailer listings change frequently and differ by country. There is no durable price advantage for a particular capacity in every market. Check the live listing immediately before purchase and verify that the stated thickness is 9.5 mm or less, the interface is SATA, and the warranty applies in your region.

What you need before opening the console

  • A compatible 2.5-inch SATA SSD.
  • The original PS4 drive caddy and its mounting screws. They are normally reused, so confirm they are present before ordering parts.
  • A Phillips #0 screwdriver, the size called for in the iFixit Slim guide.
  • A USB flash drive with enough free space for Sony’s official PS4 system-software reinstallation file.
  • A second storage location, online or offline, for backed-up saved data.
  • A stable power connection while the console is being initialized and the software is reinstalled.

Work on a clean, static-safe surface. Do not open the console while it is in Rest Mode, and do not disconnect cables while the system is writing data.

Back up saves and prepare the console

Protect saved data first

Back up every save you care about before removing the old drive. If you use online storage, sync your trophies and confirm that the latest saves have finished uploading. If you use a USB backup, complete the backup and safely disconnect the device. A drive replacement requires system initialization, so data left only on the old internal drive will not be available on the freshly installed system unless you copy it first.

Shut down completely

  1. Close your game and wait for any downloads, updates or save operations to finish.
  2. Choose the normal power-off command and wait until the console’s power indicator is fully off. Do not use Rest Mode for this work.
  3. Disconnect the power cable, HDMI cable, network cable and accessories.
  4. Allow the console to cool, then move it to a well-lit work surface.

Install the SSD: model-specific hardware steps

The cover and caddy sequence differs among the original PS4, Slim and Pro revisions. Use the guide for the exact model rather than forcing a panel or assuming that every PS4 opens in the same place. The broad workflow is the same, but the release point for the cover and the location of the caddy screw are model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the cover and drive caddy

  1. Identify the console model and follow its cover-removal instructions. Apply pressure only where the guide indicates; a panel that does not release is usually still clipped or latched.
  2. Locate the single caddy-retaining screw or release mechanism specified for your model and remove it with the Phillips #0 screwdriver if applicable.
  3. Slide the caddy out in the direction shown by the guide. Keep the screw and any cover pieces together so they are not lost.

Transfer the caddy to the SSD

  1. Remove the old drive from the caddy by taking out the four mounting screws. Support the drive so the screwdriver does not slip into the connector.
  2. Place the SSD in the caddy with its connector oriented exactly like the old drive.
  3. Install the four caddy screws without overtightening. The SSD should be held firmly, with no rocking, and the screw heads should sit correctly in the caddy recesses.
  4. Slide the caddy back into the console until the drive connector is fully seated, then replace the retaining screw or release piece.

Reassemble and check the fit

  1. Reinstall the model-specific cover, ensuring that every clip or edge is seated before applying pressure.
  2. Reconnect the display, power and other required cables.
  3. Leave the console on a stable surface with ventilation openings unobstructed.

If the caddy will not slide in smoothly, stop and check the connector orientation, caddy screw position and drive thickness. Do not push hard enough to bend the SATA connector.

Reinstall PS4 system software from USB

A replacement drive has no usable PS4 operating system. Sony’s support instruction is: “Using a computer, save a system software update file for reinstallation to a USB storage device.” Download the current official reinstallation file and follow Sony’s current USB preparation and folder-naming instructions exactly; those details can change, so use the instructions that accompany the file rather than an old guide.

  1. On a computer, obtain Sony’s official PS4 system-software reinstallation file, not merely the smaller update package.
  2. Prepare the USB storage device using the folder structure and file name specified by Sony for PS4 reinstallation. Keep the file on the USB device while you connect it to the console.
  3. With the replacement SSD installed and the console powered off, connect the prepared USB device.
  4. Start the PS4 in the recovery/reinstallation process required by Sony’s instructions. Use the controller connection and menu choice requested on screen.
  5. Confirm the reinstallation only after checking that the USB device contains the correct file. The process initializes the internal drive.
  6. Wait for the installation to finish without removing power or the USB device. The console should restart into the initial setup screens.

The exact recovery-button timing and menu wording can vary with Sony’s current software instructions. If the console reports that it cannot find the file, stop rather than repeatedly initializing: verify that you downloaded the reinstallation package, used the required folder and filename, formatted the USB device as Sony specifies, and inserted it directly into a working USB port.

Restore your data after the first boot

  1. Complete the initial account, network and display setup.
  2. Install any system update offered after the base reinstallation has completed.
  3. Restore the saved-data backup from online storage or USB. If you backed up multiple users, restore each account’s data as appropriate.
  4. Sync trophies again if necessary and confirm that important saves open correctly.
  5. Redownload or reinstall games, downloadable content and applications. Game licenses may require signing in to the account that owns them.
  6. Keep the old drive untouched until you have verified the replacement and recovered every save you need.

What performance improvement should you expect?

The defensible expectation is directional: an SSD can shorten loading and other storage-heavy operations compared with the original mechanical hard drive. The size of the improvement depends on the game, the operation being measured, the PS4 model and the software version. The available compatibility material does not provide one authoritative benchmark percentage that applies to every title, so claims such as “exactly 50 percent faster” are not reliable without a specified test.

PS4 Pro owners have greater SATA headroom because the Pro supports SATA III. Base and Slim owners can still benefit from an SSD, but their console interface limits throughput before the drive reaches its desktop benchmark rating. An SSD does not upgrade the GPU, CPU or game frame-rate target, and it cannot make a game that is limited by rendering suddenly run at a higher resolution.

Troubleshooting after the swap

The PS4 does not detect the SSD

  • Power off fully and reseat the caddy so the SATA connector is completely engaged.
  • Check that the drive is 2.5-inch SATA, at least 160 GB and no thicker than 9.5 mm.
  • Inspect the caddy screws: a screw in the wrong position can prevent the caddy from sitting flat.
  • Try the original drive if available. If the original also fails after the work, recheck the caddy and connector rather than assuming the SSD is defective.

Reinstallation says the file is missing

  • Confirm that the downloaded package is Sony’s reinstallation file, not only an update file.
  • Recheck Sony’s required USB format, folder names, filename capitalization and directory location.
  • Use a different USB flash drive or port if the console cannot read the device.
  • Download a fresh copy if the file size or transfer was interrupted.

The console works but a game still loads slowly

Not every loading operation is storage-bound. Compare the same operation before and after the upgrade, allow the game to finish any first-run installation, and remember that online-server delays, patches and CPU work can dominate some waits. Avoid treating one title or one loading screen as a universal benchmark.

The console shuts down during installation

Stop using the console until power and cable connections are secure. Repeat the installation only after confirming a stable outlet, a fully seated power cable and an intact USB file. Interrupting initialization can leave the system unable to boot until the reinstallation process is completed again.

Buying checklist

  • Is it a standard 2.5-inch SATA SSD?
  • Is its thickness 9.5 mm or less?
  • Is its capacity at least 160 GB?
  • Does the connector position match the PS4 caddy?
  • Is the capacity appropriate for your installed library: 500 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB?
  • Have you compared the exact model’s warranty and endurance terms?
  • Have you confirmed current regional price and stock?
  • Do you have the original caddy, mounting screws, a Phillips #0 screwdriver and a USB flash drive?
  • Have you completed and checked a save backup before opening the console?

Bottom line

For any PS4, buy a 2.5-inch SATA SSD no thicker than 9.5 mm and no smaller than 160 GB; 1 TB is the straightforward general-purpose capacity, while 500 GB and 2 TB suit smaller and larger libraries respectively. The PS4 Pro is the strongest match because its SATA III interface provides more headroom, but base and Slim consoles can still gain shorter storage-related waits. The safe installation sequence is backup, full shutdown, model-specific caddy replacement, Sony USB system-software reinstallation, and restore. Treat advertised speed percentages cautiously: the benefit is real in direction, but the exact result is game- and model-dependent.
