For most compatible desktops and laptops, the best Steam upgrade is a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. It provides enough room for a substantial game library without paying the premium or accepting the cooling demands of PCIe 5.0. The Samsung 990 PRO 2TB and WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB are strong high-end choices; choose between them by price, heatsink availability and the capacity you need.
Check compatibility before buying. Your system must have an M.2 slot of the correct length, the right keying and enough PCIe lanes, and the drive must fit beneath the motherboard or laptop heatsink. Steam Deck-class handhelds commonly require the shorter M.2 2230 format, so a desktop M.2 2280 drive is not a universal recommendation.

Best SSD upgrades at a glance
| Who it suits | Recommended drive | Why | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most gaming desktops and laptops | Samsung 990 PRO 2TB | PCIe 4.0 x4, high random and sequential performance, TLC NAND and a five-year limited warranty | Requires an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0-capable slot; verify heatsink clearance |
| Buyers who want more capacity choices or a heatsink version | WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB (or larger) | PCIe 4.0 x4, up to 8TB capacity, optional heatsink models and strong gaming performance | Performance depends on the host computer, cooling and model capacity |
| Gen4 gaming upgrade with manufacturer game-load testing | Crucial T500 | Positioned as a PCIe Gen4 NVMe gaming SSD; manufacturer cites Forspoken, Call of Duty and Valorant loading tests | Specific capacity and speed figures are not stated in the available manufacturer note; compare independent tests for ranking |
| Large installed library | 4TB or larger Gen4 NVMe SSD | Reduces the need to uninstall large games; the SN850X is offered up to 8TB | Higher purchase cost and potentially different performance by capacity |
| Steam Deck-class handheld | An SSD in the required M.2 2230 format | Matches the shorter slot used by many handhelds | Confirm the exact model, power limits and thermal clearance; 2280 drives generally will not fit |
Capacity, physical fit and interface should decide the purchase before a peak sequential-read number. For game loading, random 4K responsiveness, sustained behavior and the rest of the system often matter more than the largest number on a retail box.

Games read thousands of small files while loading a level, compiling shaders or restoring a save. An SSD has no moving heads, so it can answer those scattered requests far faster than a hard disk drive. This is why replacing an HDD usually produces the biggest perceived improvement: shorter boot and level loads, less texture pop-in caused by storage delays and a more responsive desktop while a game is running.

A SATA SSD already removes most hard-drive latency. A modern NVMe drive can reduce transfer and access time further, but the visible difference is game-specific. A title that spends its loading screen decompressing assets on the CPU, compiling shaders or checking a network service may not become dramatically faster when you replace one SSD with a faster one. Do not promise a fixed percentage improvement without testing the particular game on the particular computer.
Sequential speed is only one part of the picture
Sequential read and write figures describe long, continuous transfers. They are useful when copying a large game library, but game engines commonly issue many smaller requests. PC Gamer’s 2026 buying guidance highlights random 4K performance because it affects loading maps, assets and game saves. Queue depth, firmware, controller behavior, CPU decompression and the game engine all influence the result you see.
What vendor game tests mean
Samsung reports a Forspoken map load of about one second on the 990 PRO, compared with four seconds on a SATA SSD and 28 seconds on an HDD in its stated test systems. That is a manufacturer result under specified hardware and software conditions, not a universal Steam guarantee. Treat similar vendor demonstrations as examples of a workload, then check independent testing or your own measured load times before assigning a performance ranking.

An otherwise excellent SSD is useless if it does not fit, cannot negotiate its interface or cannot be cooled. Check these items in your motherboard manual, laptop service documentation or the manufacturer’s specification page.
1. M.2 length and form factor
The common desktop format is M.2 2280: 22 millimetres wide and 80 millimetres long. Confirm that the slot has a standoff and screw position for 2280, rather than only 2230, 2242 or 2260 positions. Measure the available space in a laptop or compact case, including the cover and any thermal pad.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
Many handheld PCs use M.2 2230, a much shorter drive. A 2280 SSD cannot be substituted simply because it has the same electrical interface. For a Steam Deck-class device, verify the exact required length, single- or double-sided clearance, power budget and replacement procedure before ordering.
2. Keying and protocol
Modern gaming NVMe drives use an M-key connector and communicate over PCIe. The WD_BLACK SN850X specification calls for a computer with an M.2 M-key port. A slot intended only for SATA M.2 drives will not provide NVMe operation, even though the module may look similar. Check the manual for “PCIe,” “NVMe” and the supported keying, not just the word “M.2.”

3. PCIe generation and lanes
The 990 PRO and SN850X are PCIe 4.0 x4 drives. They work in systems that support PCIe 4.0 x4 and can generally operate in older compatible PCIe generations at the host’s lower speed, but the motherboard or laptop determines the negotiated link. A slot wired with fewer lanes, or one sharing lanes with another device, can limit performance. The manual’s lane-sharing table is the authoritative check.
PCIe 5.0 drives can post higher benchmark numbers, but PC Gamer’s guidance identifies PCIe 4.0 NVMe as the mainstream gaming sweet spot today. Gen5 models can require more cooling while offering limited real-world gaming benefit in current titles. Pay for Gen5 only when your platform supports it and your workload, rather than a specification sheet, justifies it.
4. Heatsink and clearance
Some motherboards include an M.2 cover with a thermal pad. Remove any protective film from the pad, ensure it contacts the drive and confirm that the cover closes without pressure on components. The 990 PRO includes Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard features and a heat-spreader label; the SN850X is sold in versions with an optional heatsink. A laptop may have a proprietary shield or no room for a tall desktop heatsink, so use the bare module when the service manual requires it.

- KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
5. Firmware and system support
Install the manufacturer’s current SSD firmware using its official management utility before moving a large library. Also update the motherboard or laptop firmware when its release notes address NVMe compatibility or storage stability. Keep a backup before firmware work and never interrupt power during an update.
How much capacity do you need?
| Capacity | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | Operating system plus a rotating set of games | Large modern games can consume a substantial share of the drive, forcing frequent moves or reinstalls |
| 2TB | Most PC Steam libraries and the default recommendation | Costs more than 1TB, but usually offers a better balance of room and price per usable terabyte |
| 4TB | Players who keep many large games, creative applications and recordings installed | Higher upfront cost; confirm that the specific model and firmware support the capacity |
| 8TB | Very large libraries and systems that prioritize keeping games installed | Available on some models, including the SN850X; price and capacity-specific performance need checking |
A 2TB drive leaves room for the operating system, applications, updates and several large games without making capacity management a weekly task. Choose 4TB or more when your goal is to keep a broad library installed rather than repeatedly download games. Do not fill any SSD completely: leave free space for updates, temporary files and the drive’s housekeeping. The exact amount of free space to reserve depends on the operating system, workload and vendor guidance.
Recommended PCIe 4.0 SSDs
Samsung 990 PRO: the high-end 2TB default
Samsung specifies the 990 PRO as a PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 M.2 2280 drive using TLC NAND. It is rated for sequential reads up to 7,450 MB/s and sequential writes up to 6,900 MB/s, and carries a five-year limited warranty. The 2TB model is the clearest fit for a large PC Steam library when the host supports M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0.
Samsung’s published Forspoken test measured approximately one second for map loading on the 990 PRO, versus four seconds on a SATA SSD and 28 seconds on an HDD in the company’s stated systems. Use those figures to understand the scale of an HDD-to-SSD change, not as a promise for every title. Samsung describes Dynamic Thermal Guard and a heat-spreader label to help manage temperature; airflow and the host heatsink still determine real sustained behavior.

WD_BLACK SN850X: flexible capacities and heatsink options
SanDisk lists the SN850X as a PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 2280 drive for computers with an M.2 M-key port. The 1TB through 4TB models are rated for sequential reads up to 7,300 MB/s. Optional heatsink versions are available, and the range extends to 8TB, which makes the SN850X attractive when capacity matters more than selecting the absolute fastest benchmark result.
Choose the bare version when your motherboard or laptop supplies its own cover, and choose the heatsink version only when the extra height fits. Compare the exact capacity and sale price: specifications can differ between capacities, and an 8TB model is not automatically the best value for a two- or four-game rotation.
Crucial T500: a Gen4 alternative to investigate
Crucial positions the T500 as a PCIe Gen4 NVMe gaming SSD and cites Micron testing involving Forspoken, Call of Duty and Valorant boot or loading behavior. Those are manufacturer claims tied to the company’s test setup. The available product note does not establish a complete capacity range or sequential-speed table, so use the exact model specification and independent reviews when comparing it with the 990 PRO or SN850X.
Installation and Steam setup
The following procedure applies to a typical desktop and is adaptable to a laptop. Laptop disassembly steps vary by model; follow its service documentation and disconnect the battery when the instructions require it.
- Back up important data. Copy saves that are not synchronized, configuration files and personal files to another device or cloud service. A drive replacement is not a backup.
- Shut down completely. Turn off the computer, switch off the power supply, unplug it and hold the power button briefly to discharge residual power. Use an anti-static strap or regularly ground yourself against the chassis.
- Locate the correct M.2 socket. Confirm the slot’s length, M-keying and PCIe support. If several sockets exist, consult the manual for the socket connected directly to the CPU and for any lane-sharing restrictions.
- Install the module. Remove the M.2 cover and its thermal-pad film if present. Insert the SSD at the connector’s angle, lower it flat and secure it with the correct screw or latch. Do not bend the board or force the connector.
- Reinstall the heatsink. Ensure the pad contacts the controller and NAND packages and that no protective film remains. Tighten the cover evenly; excessive pressure can damage the module.
- Confirm detection in firmware. Enter the UEFI setup using the key shown during startup and check the NVMe information page. If the drive is missing, power down and recheck seating, the lane-sharing table and whether the socket supports NVMe rather than SATA.
- Initialize a new drive in Windows. Open Disk Management, initialize the disk as GPT when prompted, create a new simple volume and format it with the file system appropriate for your installation. If the SSD contains an existing system image, do not initialize or format it; restore or clone it according to the imaging tool’s instructions.
- Update firmware. After the operating system recognizes the drive, use the SSD maker’s official utility to check firmware and health. Keep the computer on reliable power during the update.
- Add the drive to Steam. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Storage, choose the add-drive or plus control, select the new volume and create or select a Steam Library folder. Labels can vary slightly between Steam client versions.
- Move installed games. In the same Storage view, select a game, choose the move option and select the new library. Verify that the game launches before deleting the old copy. Steam will usually verify files after a move or update.
Cloning an existing boot drive
Cloning can preserve applications and settings, but it requires a destination at least as large as the used data and careful boot-entry handling. Make a separate backup first. After cloning, shut down, disconnect the old drive temporarily and confirm that the new SSD boots on its own before reconnecting other storage. If Windows starts the old installation, check the UEFI boot order and the clone’s EFI system partition rather than repeatedly recloning.

Thermals, maintenance and sustained performance
Why temperature matters
NVMe controllers can reduce speed when they become too hot. Short game loads may finish before throttling is visible, while a large installation, patch or file copy can expose it. Use the motherboard cover or a correctly fitted SSD heatsink, maintain case airflow and avoid placing the drive directly behind a heat-producing graphics card when another socket is available.
Firmware and free space
Keep firmware current, but read the release notes and follow the vendor’s update procedure. Maintain free space for game patches, shader caches and the SSD’s internal housekeeping. A drive that is nearly full can make updates cumbersome and may show lower sustained write performance.
Measure the result fairly
Compare the same game, save point and graphics settings before and after the upgrade. Record whether the test includes shader compilation, a first launch, a network login or an already-cached run. This separates storage gains from CPU, memory, network and shader effects. A benchmark’s sequential score is not a substitute for a repeatable in-game load test.

What improvement should you expect?
| Starting storage | Likely experience | What can limit the gain |
|---|---|---|
| HDD to any good SSD | Usually the largest reduction in boot and game-loading delay | CPU work, network checks and shader compilation can still dominate particular screens |
| SATA SSD to PCIe 4.0 NVMe | Potentially faster transfers and some shorter loads, with gains varying by game | Many titles are not storage-bound after the first SSD upgrade |
| PCIe 4.0 NVMe to PCIe 5.0 NVMe | Higher synthetic bandwidth, but often limited visible gaming improvement today | Additional heat and cooling requirements, plus the host platform’s limits |
Storage is only one stage of a loading pipeline. Asset decompression can be CPU-bound; shader compilation can depend on the processor and graphics driver; online games may wait for authentication or server responses. An SSD upgrade remains worthwhile, but set expectations from the game and the old drive rather than from a single headline number.
Common problems and fixes
The SSD is not visible in UEFI or Windows
- Power down and reseat the module; an M.2 card that is not fully inserted will not enumerate.
- Confirm that the socket supports NVMe PCIe drives and the installed length.
- Check whether another M.2 socket, SATA port or PCIe slot disables this socket through lane sharing.
- Update motherboard firmware if its notes mention NVMe detection, then test the SSD in the primary socket.
The drive appears smaller than its label
Manufacturers quote decimal capacity, while operating systems display a different unit convention and reserve space for formatting and system metadata. A modest difference is normal. If the reported capacity is dramatically wrong, inspect Disk Management and the firmware utility before creating partitions.
Games did not get noticeably faster
- Check whether the old drive was already a SATA SSD rather than an HDD.
- Repeat the test after the first-run shader compilation and account for network login time.
- Monitor CPU usage, temperatures and background downloads during the load.
- Verify that the new drive is running at the expected PCIe link width and generation instead of a reduced link caused by the slot or firmware.
The SSD slows during a large copy
Check temperature and airflow first. Sustained writes can exhaust a drive’s fast cache, after which speed falls to a lower steady rate. A heatsink, better airflow, current firmware and adequate free space can help, but no consumer SSD maintains its peak sequential rating indefinitely.
Steam says files are missing after moving a library
Open Steam > Settings > Storage, confirm that the library folder is listed, then use the game’s properties to verify installed files. Do not delete the original folder until the moved installation launches and verification completes.

Choosing between 1TB, 2TB and 4TB
- Count the games you keep installed. Include current install sizes and room for patches, not just the download size shown on a store page.
- Choose 2TB when uncertain. It is the practical balance for most PC players and avoids the management burden of a 1TB system drive.
- Choose 4TB or more for an always-installed library. The SN850X’s availability up to 8TB makes it one option when capacity is the primary concern.
- Compare price per usable terabyte. Check the exact capacity, warranty and endurance at the time of purchase; promotional pricing changes and should not be treated as permanent.
Decision guide
- Desktop with an empty M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slot: buy a 2TB Samsung 990 PRO or WD_BLACK SN850X, selecting the model that fits the supplied heatsink and offers the better current value.
- Desktop with limited cooling: favor a bare drive under the motherboard cover, verify airflow and avoid paying for a tall add-on heatsink that cannot fit.
- Laptop: confirm 2280 versus 2230 length, single- or double-sided clearance and the laptop’s supported PCIe generation before selecting capacity.
- Steam Deck-class handheld: shop specifically for the required 2230 NVMe size and check power and thermal limits; do not assume a desktop 2280 recommendation applies.
- Replacing an HDD: prioritize any reputable SSD that is compatible and large enough; the move to solid-state storage matters more than chasing the highest Gen4 benchmark.
- Already using a SATA SSD: upgrade to Gen4 NVMe when you need more capacity or your workloads benefit from lower latency, but expect game-specific rather than guaranteed dramatic gains.
