Best Speedometer Apps for Android Auto When Google Maps Isn’t Enough (2026 Guide)

Waze is the best first choice for most drivers who want a speedometer that stays visible on an Android Auto display. It keeps a speed readout on the driving screen and changes it to red when you exceed the detected limit. Choose Sygic GPS Navigation when the largest speed panel matters most, HERE WeGo when free offline maps are the priority, TomTom AmiGO for camera alerts, or a dedicated speedometer when another device already handles navigation.

Google Maps is still useful, but its Android Auto speedometer has been a limited, changeable rollout rather than a dependable feature for every phone and vehicle. The guide below separates persistent speed displays, posted-limit awareness, camera warnings, offline navigation and phone-based windshield heads-up displays so you can pick the right tool without adding unnecessary screen interaction.

Quick picks

App Best fit What appears while driving Main compromise
Waze Most drivers who want a persistent readout Speed pill that remains on the Android Auto screen and turns red above the limit Advertising on maps and heavier telemetry than a minimalist speedometer
Sygic GPS Navigation Largest, most prominent speed panel Speed, speed limit and next-turn information in a head-up-display-style panel Full driving features require a subscription
HERE WeGo Free offline navigation Current speed and posted-limit display with downloadable country maps Traffic coverage is thinner in some smaller markets
TomTom AmiGO Speed-camera awareness Live speed and fixed- and mobile-camera alerts in a compact Android Auto HUD Camera-alert legality and coverage vary by jurisdiction
HUDWAY Go Reflected windshield display Mirrored speedometer on a reflective phone mount Daylight glare can wash out the projection; a dark cabin works best
Speedometer GPS Pro Numbers only Current speed, maximum speed, average speed, distance and time No map, lane guidance or camera alerts
GPS Speed Pro Minimal widget Speed, heading and a small compass No route or speed-limit awareness
MapFactor Navigator 7 Offline turn-by-turn navigation Offline voice guidance, lane assistance, traffic, alternate routes and day/night modes It is a navigation app first, not a dedicated giant speed readout

Why Google Maps may not be enough

Android Auto officially focuses on navigation functions rather than guaranteeing a permanent speedometer. Google describes the platform as providing “voice-guided navigation, estimated arrival times, live traffic information, lane guidance and more” through Google Maps or another navigation app. That leaves room for a navigation app to show speed, but it does not promise that every approved app or every vehicle will display a speed panel.

Availability of the Google Maps speedometer has also changed over time. Android Central reported on 20 July 2026 that a limited server-side rollout was reaching selected beta users, reportedly around Google Maps version 26.29.02.946673643. In that rollout, the speedometer appeared beside the speed-limit indicator. TechRadar reported on 9 September 2026 that some users were seeing the speedometer and traffic data disappear intermittently, possibly because of app versions or beta status, with no official Google explanation at the time. Treat the feature as volatile: check the actual phone, Maps build and vehicle combination rather than assuming a setting will enable it.

Tested for vibration resistance to support stable performance on bumpy roads.

If you need a speed number every time the car starts, a navigation app with an established Android Auto speed element is a safer choice than waiting for a server-side Maps change. If you only need speed occasionally, Google Maps may still be sufficient when the feature is present on your setup.

How Android Auto speedometer apps work

Android Auto does not mirror every phone app onto the dashboard. Google requires apps built for Android Auto to be submitted for approval “to ensure safety and compatibility.” Approved apps use safety-oriented templates that limit typing, scrolling and other high-attention interactions while the vehicle is moving. A phone-only speedometer can therefore be excellent on a handset yet absent from the car display.

Navigation apps generally place the speed element inside the map template. Dedicated speedometer apps use a permitted widget or dashboard-style template. A windshield HUD app takes a different route: the phone renders a mirrored image that a reflective mount bounces toward the glass. The latter can work even when you do not want a map, but it depends on physical placement and lighting.

Before you install

  • Confirm that the app lists Android Auto support in Google Play and that your phone can connect to your vehicle normally.
  • Decide whether you need navigation, a posted speed limit, camera alerts or only a large current-speed number.
  • Check whether your country permits camera-warning functions. Rules differ, and an alert that is legal in one jurisdiction can be restricted in another.
  • For offline use, download maps or regions while connected to Wi-Fi and test them before leaving coverage.

Put the app on the car screen

  1. Install the chosen app on the Android phone and open it once so its permissions, units and map downloads can be configured.
  2. Connect the phone to the vehicle with the usual wired or wireless Android Auto connection.
  3. Open the Android Auto app list on the head unit. If the app is approved and compatible, it should appear with the other navigation or dashboard apps.
  4. If it is missing, open Android Auto settings on the phone and review the launcher/customization list. Labels differ by Android release, so use the current “Customize launcher” or equivalent entry.
  5. Start a route or dashboard view while parked, verify that speed units and the posted limit are correct, then begin driving. Do not change settings while moving.

Best apps in detail

Waze: the closest replacement for a Google Maps speedometer

Waze is the strongest default recommendation when your main requirement is a speed number that remains visible on the Android Auto display. The researched 2026 comparison reports a permanent speed pill and a red warning state when the detected speed exceeds the limit. That makes it easier to glance at than a speed value hidden in a menu.

Waze is free and combines the speed readout with its familiar route, traffic and incident-oriented map. It is a good fit when you still want live navigation rather than a blank dashboard. The trade-off is that the map includes advertising and the service collects more telemetry than a number-only utility. Drivers who want the least data collection or the least visual clutter may prefer a dedicated speedometer.

Sygic GPS Navigation: the most prominent speed panel

Sygic is aimed at drivers who want speed treated as a primary dashboard element. The comparison describes a head-up-display-style panel containing current speed, the speed limit and the next turn, using TomTom road data and offering offline country maps. The larger panel is useful when a small corner pill is difficult to read on a high-resolution or wide infotainment display.

Full driving features are subscription-gated. The reported price was about $2 per month when billed annually; verify the current offer and region in the app before subscribing. Sygic makes the most sense if you want one package that combines a prominent speed panel, turn guidance and offline maps, rather than pairing a separate speedometer with another navigation app.

HERE WeGo: free offline maps with speed information

HERE WeGo is the practical choice when connectivity is unreliable or you want to avoid paying for an offline tier. The comparison reports current-speed and posted-limit displays, downloadable country-sized maps and no paid tier. Download the regions you will drive before starting a trip; an offline map cannot provide data that was never stored on the phone.

Its limitation is traffic depth. Coverage can be thinner in smaller markets, so the app may be better for dependable map and speed-limit access than for the most detailed live congestion picture. Choose it for rural travel, roaming-sensitive trips or a backup route app, and keep expectations realistic about local traffic information.

TomTom AmiGO: speed-camera alert focus

TomTom AmiGO combines a live speed display with fixed- and mobile-speed-camera alerts in a compact Android Auto HUD. It is the specialist pick for drivers whose priority is being reminded about enforcement locations, not simply seeing a larger number.

Camera data is not universal. Coverage depends on the country and on the app’s current database, and local law may prohibit or restrict warnings. Check the rules where you will drive and treat every alert as a prompt to observe the posted limit, not as permission to rely on an application. AmiGO is most useful when its camera coverage is established for your route and legal in your jurisdiction.

  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
  • Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips

HUDWAY Go: a reflected windshield HUD

HUDWAY Go mirrors a speedometer onto the windshield through a reflective phone mount. This is different from Android Auto’s in-dash template: the phone image is reflected toward the driver, so it can remain in view without occupying the vehicle’s map screen. It is relevant when navigation is already running elsewhere or when your vehicle has no suitable display.

The projection works best in a dark cabin. Daylight glare can reduce contrast, and the phone must be positioned so the reflected image is readable without blocking the road. The comparison reported full HUD and speed-alert features at around $30 per year; treat that as a reported price, not a guarantee, and check the current plan. A reflective windshield HUD phone mount is essential—without it, the image will not behave like a true heads-up display.

Speedometer GPS Pro: a full-screen number panel

Speedometer GPS Pro is for a narrow, clear requirement: show the current speed as large numbers and keep trip statistics available. The comparison lists current speed, maximum speed, average speed, distance and time. It does not provide a map, lane guidance or camera alerts.

Use it when route guidance comes from the vehicle, a second phone or another navigation device. Because there is no route context, it avoids the extra map information that can compete with the speed number. It is not the right replacement for a navigation app when you need turns or live traffic.

GPS Speed Pro: a minimal Android Auto widget

GPS Speed Pro occupies the middle ground between a giant number and a full map. Its Android Auto widget layout shows speed, heading and a small compass, but no route or speed-limit awareness. That makes it suitable for drivers who want orientation data while following signs or another navigation screen.

Do not choose it if your central question is “What is the posted limit here?” The app reports your movement and heading; it does not supply the limit context or camera warnings that Waze, Sygic or AmiGO are intended to provide.

MapFactor Navigator 7: offline navigation with Android Auto support

MapFactor’s 2024 Navigator 7 announcement says the app is fully compatible with Android Auto and supports offline voice turn-by-turn guidance without an internet connection. It also lists lane assistance, traffic, alternative routes and day/night modes. That combination makes it a strong option when the primary failure mode is losing data service rather than lacking a speed number.

Download the required maps and plan the route before going offline. Navigator 7 is best understood as a complete offline navigator; if you want the largest possible speed readout, Sygic or a dedicated speedometer is a more direct fit. Its value is keeping directions and lane information available when a live connection is not.

Speed always visible in Android Auto Waze The reported permanent speed pill remains on the driving screen and changes color above the limit.
Largest speed-and-turn panel Sygic GPS Navigation Its reported HUD-style panel combines speed, limit and next turn.
Free offline maps HERE WeGo Country-sized downloads and no paid tier are reported.
Offline voice navigation plus lane help MapFactor Navigator 7 The 2024 release describes Android Auto compatibility, offline guidance, lane assistance and alternate routes.
Speed-camera reminders TomTom AmiGO It reports fixed- and mobile-camera alerts alongside live speed.
Windshield projection HUDWAY Go It reflects the phone display through a windshield mount instead of relying on the in-dash map.
Only speed and trip statistics Speedometer GPS Pro It reports current, maximum and average speed plus distance and time without navigation.
Speed, heading and compass GPS Speed Pro Its widget is intentionally minimal and omits route and limit data.

Offline use: what continues to work

Offline support has two separate meanings. An app may keep the map and route available without a data connection, while live traffic, incident reports, camera updates or server-side speed-limit changes still require connectivity. HERE WeGo and MapFactor Navigator 7 are the clearest choices when the map itself must work offline. Sygic also reports offline country maps. Downloading a map does not automatically guarantee current traffic or enforcement information.

Test offline operation before a long trip. Put the phone in airplane mode while parked, leave location services enabled if your phone permits that combination, open the downloaded region and calculate a short route. Confirm that the speed panel still appears and that voice guidance starts. Restore connectivity afterward so traffic and database updates can resume.

Speed limits, camera alerts and accuracy

A speedometer app estimates movement from the phone’s GPS and displays a speed limit from its map or road database. Both can lag, be wrong or be unavailable on a newly changed road. The posted roadside sign and the law take precedence over any app value. Treat a red speed pill or camera alert as a warning, not as an authority.

Spedal 2026 2-in-1 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter | Ultra Mini Dongle, Converts Wired to Wireless, WiFi 6 & Bluetooth 5.4, Plug & Play, Low Latency, Auto Reconnect
  • Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
  • Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
  • Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
  • Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.

Camera-alert rules vary by jurisdiction. Before enabling TomTom AmiGO’s warnings—or any similar feature—check the rules for every country or state on your journey. Some places restrict warning devices, and crossing a border can change what is permitted. Coverage can also differ between urban and rural roads, so an absent alert does not mean an absent camera.

Cost and subscription choices

App or feature Reported price or access model Qualification
Waze Free The comparison describes the app as free; map advertising and telemetry are trade-offs.
HERE WeGo No paid tier reported The comparison reports free offline country maps; traffic coverage varies by market.
Sygic premium About $2 per month billed annually Price reported in the 2026 comparison; verify the current regional offer.
HUDWAY Go full HUD and speed alerts Around $30 per year Price reported in the 2026 comparison; verify the current plan.

Prices and feature gates can change by country, operating-system account and promotion. The apps with no price shown above should not be assumed to be permanently free; check their current Play Store listing and in-app purchase screen before relying on a feature.

Safety and distraction controls

Android Auto’s approved templates are designed to reduce driver interaction, but an approved app can still become distracting if you keep changing views. Set units, map downloads, alert behavior and route preferences while parked. Use voice commands for destination changes when available, and never read a long notification or adjust a subscription while moving.

A persistent speed number should reduce glances, not invite more of them. Mount a HUD phone where it does not obstruct the road, airbags or legal sight lines. If a reflected display is dim, doubled or difficult to focus on, remove it rather than increasing brightness until it becomes a distraction.

Troubleshooting when the speedometer is missing

The app is not listed in Android Auto

  • Open the app on the phone once and complete its initial permissions or map setup.
  • Disconnect and reconnect Android Auto, then check the launcher customization list.
  • Confirm that the Play Store listing still identifies Android Auto support. A phone-only app will not necessarily be approved for the car display.
  • Update Android Auto and the app through Google Play, then restart the phone and head unit if the listing is present but the icon remains absent.

The speed value is blank or frozen

  • Move to an open area with a clear view of the sky and wait for a GPS fix.
  • Check that location permission is enabled and that battery-saver restrictions are not suspending the app.
  • Verify the speed unit and region settings; a mismatch can make the value appear implausible rather than absent.
  • If navigation works but the speed panel does not, close the app, reconnect Android Auto and test again while parked.

Google Maps had the feature and then lost it

Because the 2026 rollout was reported as limited and server-side, disappearing behavior may be tied to account, app version or beta status rather than a vehicle fault. Check the installed Maps version and test another approved app such as Waze. Do not reset the vehicle merely to chase a feature that Google has not made universal.

Recommended combinations

One app for everyday commuting

Start with Waze. It supplies route guidance and a persistent speed pill, so there is no need to keep a second speedometer running. Accept its advertising and telemetry trade-offs in exchange for the simple glanceable display.

Long trips through weak-signal areas

Use HERE WeGo for a free offline setup or MapFactor Navigator 7 when offline voice guidance and lane assistance are more important. Download every region before departure and test in airplane mode while parked.

Navigation on one device, speed on another

Use Speedometer GPS Pro for a large number with trip statistics, or GPS Speed Pro for speed, heading and a compact compass. HUDWAY Go is the alternative when you want the number reflected on the windshield; budget for a suitable reflective mount and test it in daylight.

Drivers focused on enforcement warnings

Try TomTom AmiGO only after checking local camera-alert law and the coverage on your route. Keep the posted limit as the authority and treat the app as an additional reminder.

Bottom line

Choose Waze for the most dependable all-round Android Auto speed display, Sygic for the largest speed panel, HERE WeGo or MapFactor Navigator 7 for offline travel, TomTom AmiGO for legally permitted camera alerts, and a dedicated speedometer or HUDWAY Go when navigation is handled elsewhere. Google Maps may show a speedometer on some 2026 beta and server-side configurations, but its intermittent availability means it should not be your only plan if a persistent readout matters.
