For most supported desktop PCs, Fan Control is the best free starting point for replacing SpeedFan’s motherboard and case-fan controls. Choose Argus Monitor if you want a paid utility with documented control for supported motherboard, AIO, and external-controller fans; choose MSI Afterburner for a graphics-card fan curve. If you only need sensor readings, HWiNFO can complement a controller, but it is not established here as a complete fan-control replacement. Check compatibility with your exact hardware before relying on any of these tools.
Which SpeedFan alternative fits your job?
SpeedFan combined sensor monitoring with fan control, but alternatives do not all cover the same hardware. A GPU utility will not necessarily control case fans, and a sensor monitor is not automatically a fan controller.

Fan Control: best free starting point for desktop fan curves
Fan Control documents Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, multiple temperature sources, custom curves, combined sensors, saved profiles, and plugins. That flexibility makes it a practical first option when you want case fans to respond to CPU, GPU, or other available temperatures.
#1 Best Overall
- CABLE MANAGEMENT: Case Fan Hub can be placed in housing, it's connected to motherboard with one cable, you can do without many additional cables and lay them freely in the invisible part of housing
- SYNCHRONOUS FAN CONTROL: Your set PWM signal is passed on synchronously to all fans connected to the Case Fan Hub, the RPM of the first fan slot are read out and returned to your system
- EXPAND YOUR VENTILATION: Even if you don't have enough fan headers on your mainboard, the case fan hub expands your system by 9 more case fan slots
- EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY: The fans are powered directly from your power supply via Sata Power, there is no voltage loss at the fan speed and smooth, smooth operation is made possible
- TECHNICAL DETAILS: Output: 10 x 4-pin PWM Socket, Output Current: up to 1 A per Port, Input: SATA Power + 4-pin Fan Header, Input Current: up to 4.5 A, Dimensions: 55.6 x 86.3 x 14.3 mm, Weight: 50 g
Compatibility is the limiting factor: the project says hardware support depends on its upstream libraries, so feature availability does not guarantee that your motherboard or controller will be detected. Its FAQ also cautions that most laptops do not expose their fans to third-party software, although some device-specific plugin support may exist. Check the official release repository for current builds and compatibility guidance.
Argus Monitor: paid option for supported fan headers and controllers
Argus Monitor documents fan control for supported motherboard headers, AIO cooling solutions, and external controllers. It can use available CPU, GPU, drive, motherboard, and controller temperatures for curves, or set fixed speeds. This makes it a candidate when you need broader sensor choices than a GPU-only tool offers, provided your hardware is supported.

HWiNFO: pair sensor monitoring with a controller
HWiNFO is useful when you need sensor readings or integrations. Its official add-ons page describes integrations, and Fan Control lists an HWiNFO sensor-import plugin. The cited official information does not establish HWiNFO alone as a full replacement for SpeedFan’s whole-system fan control, so pair it with a controller if changing fan speeds is your goal.

Open Hardware Monitor: check current support before choosing it
Open Hardware Monitor’s repository describes Windows sensor monitoring and fan control for supported controller chips. The available information does not establish the current breadth of hardware support, so verify that it is actively suitable for your specific machine before treating it as a leading modern replacement.
How to choose and check compatibility
- Identify what you want to control. For motherboard or case-fan curves, start with Fan Control or consider Argus Monitor. For a graphics-card fan curve, use a GPU-focused option such as MSI Afterburner. For readings only, use a sensor monitor such as HWiNFO.
- Check your PC and operating system. Confirm that your motherboard, fan controller, AIO, or GPU is supported by the software. Fan Control identifies Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported; its hardware coverage still depends on the libraries and devices available.
- Confirm which temperature inputs are available. A curve can only respond to sensors the utility can read. Check for the CPU, GPU, drive, or controller sensor you actually want to use rather than assuming every source will appear.
- Download from the official project or vendor page. For Fan Control, use the official release repository; for other tools, use the linked product or project pages. Review current release and security information before installing.
- Test detection before depending on a curve. Confirm that the expected fans and sensors appear in the application, then verify that changes to a curve produce the intended fan response. If the relevant control is missing, do not assume a monitor or GPU utility can control that header.
Fan Control security-version note
The Fan Control project says its V237 and earlier releases included WinRing0, which Windows Defender flagged as Trojan:Win32/Vigorf.A as of 2025-09-04. The project says V238 or later removes WinRing0 in favor of a PawnIO build. This is the project’s stated resolution; use the official release source and check current security information. Do not bypass or whitelist a detection based only on this note.
