There is no single best AAC app for every nonspeaking person. The right choice depends on how the person creates messages (typing, symbols, or both), how they access a device (touch, switch, eye gaze, scanning or keyboard), their literacy and language needs, and which hardware they already use. Apple Live Speech is the simplest first check for someone who can type on a supported Apple device. Proloquo4Text is a text-first option, Proloquo2Go combines symbols with typing, and TD Snap offers several page sets and alternative access methods.
One terminology note matters: “speech-to-text” normally means converting spoken words into writing. The tools in this guide primarily provide text-to-speech or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)—the user composes a message and the device says it aloud. Someone may also need speech recognition for a communication partner, but that is a different job from an AAC speech-generating app.

How AAC differs from ordinary text-to-speech
A text-to-speech utility reads text that has already been entered. AAC systems add a communication environment: frequently used messages, vocabulary organization, symbols, word prediction, selectable voices and access methods intended for repeated conversation. A person may use a basic text box successfully for a short-term injury and still need a richer AAC system for school, work or lifelong communication.
Do not assume that a nonspeaking person cannot read, spell or understand language. Some people type fluently; others understand more than they can type; others benefit from symbols, scanning or a combination. The app must match the person’s strongest reliable way to formulate a message.
Apple Live Speech
What it does
Apple describes Live Speech as a feature for people who cannot speak, have a speech disability or prefer not to use their voice. The user types what they want to say and the device speaks it aloud. It can be used in person and during Phone or FaceTime calls. Common phrases can be saved for quick access, and the user can select system voices or a Personal Voice when that feature is available.
Who should investigate it
- Someone who already uses a compatible iPhone, iPad or other supported Apple product.
- A person who can reliably type on the device’s keyboard or with an alternative keyboard.
- Someone who needs a lightweight option for conversations and telephone calls rather than a symbol-based language system.
What it does not establish
The available documentation does not describe Live Speech as a full symbol-based AAC language system. It may be entirely adequate for a literate adult who types, but it should not be treated as proof that a child, emerging reader or person who needs eye gaze will find it suitable.
How to check availability
Feature support can vary by device model, operating-system version, region and language. Before relying on it, check Apple’s current accessibility documentation for the exact device and language, then test typing, saved phrases, voice output and call behavior with the intended communication partners.
Proloquo4Text
Communication approach
Proloquo4Text is a text-first AAC app. Its App Store description lists text-to-speech, organized and saved phrases, word prediction, controls for speaking as you type, display options and natural-sounding voice choices. The central question is whether the person can formulate useful messages through typing quickly enough for daily communication.

Potential strengths
- Typed language: The person can create original sentences instead of selecting only prewritten buttons.
- Prediction: Word prediction may reduce keystrokes, although its benefit depends on spelling, motor speed and the language being used.
- Phrase organization: Repeated messages can be stored and arranged for faster access.
- Voice and display controls: The user can choose a voice and adjust how text is presented, subject to the current app’s capabilities.
Questions to answer before adopting it
- Can the person type accurately when tired, rushed or communicating in a noisy setting?
- Is the on-screen keyboard large enough, or is an external keyboard or alternative input required?
- Does the word-prediction language match the person’s preferred language?
- Will stored phrases remain usable as vocabulary and communication partners change?
The cited materials do not establish individual clinical fit, superiority over another AAC approach, or a fixed current price. Check the current listing, subscription or purchase terms in the relevant region before paying.

Proloquo2Go
Communication approach
Proloquo2Go is a customizable symbol-supported AAC app that also provides a typing pathway and spoken output. AssistiveWare describes vocabulary that can support growth from single words to complex sentences, along with customization and alternative-access features.
When symbols may help
Symbols can reduce the spelling burden, provide a visual cue for a word or concept, and make message building possible when direct typing is slow or unreliable. They are not automatically easier: the communicator must understand the symbols, locate them efficiently and have a layout that reflects their language.
Customization and access
The app can be configured for different vocabulary organizations and access needs, but a listing cannot tell you which grid size, vocabulary set, voice or selection method is right for a particular person. Include the communicator in every change. A layout that looks efficient to a professional may be hard to see, physically tiring or linguistically unnatural for its user.
Hardware compatibility
The App Store listing names iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch compatibility. Confirm the exact operating-system and device requirements before purchase, especially if the person needs a larger display, an external switch or a mount. Compatibility with a product family does not guarantee that every model provides adequate screen size or access.

TD Snap
What “TD Snap” means
TD Snap is a collection of AAC page sets rather than one fixed communication layout. Tobii Dynavox lists Core First, Motor Plan, Express, Text, Scanning and Aphasia page sets. The page states that speech output and access through touch, eye gaze or switch are supported, with a scanning page set for people who cannot reliably select targets directly.

Choosing a page set
- Core First: Investigate when a core-vocabulary approach is appropriate.
- Motor Plan: Consider when consistent motor patterns are important to access.
- Express: Explore for a more phrase- and message-oriented workflow.
- Text: Consider when typing is the primary composition method.
- Scanning: Investigate when a switch and scanning are more reliable than direct touch.
- Aphasia: Consider only with an assessment of the person’s acquired-language and cognitive-communication needs.
These labels are not diagnoses or guarantees. The same page set can feel fast for one communicator and unusable for another depending on vision, motor control, language and training.

October 2026 update
On October 5, 2026, Tobii Dynavox announced a TD Snap update expanding language support and personalization, including Express support for Korean and Traditional Chinese (Cantonese). This is a dated vendor announcement about that release; it does not mean every page set or every feature supports every language. Verify the language and page-set details in the current release information.

How to evaluate an app with the communicator
1. Define the communication situations
List where communication breaks down: home, school, work, medical appointments, public transport, telephone calls and emergencies. A solution that works face to face may be awkward on a call; one that is portable may be too small for comfortable eye gaze.
2. Identify the most reliable access method
- Direct touch with a finger or stylus
- Typing on an on-screen or physical keyboard
- Switch scanning
- Eye gaze
- Another documented alternative input method
Test access when the communicator is rested and fatigued. Accuracy, endurance and recovery from an accidental selection matter as much as the first successful message.

3. Separate language ability from motor ability
Ask what the person understands, reads, spells, recognizes in symbols and wants to say. Do not replace a rich language system with a simple phrase board merely because direct touch is difficult; solve the access problem with an appropriate access method, layout, mounting position or switch arrangement.

Test greetings, requests, refusals, pain, personal names, opinions, repairs (“that is not what I meant”), novel sentences and urgent needs. Include the person’s actual languages and culturally relevant phrases. A system that handles only “yes,” “no” and food choices is not sufficient evidence of fit.
5. Measure practical independence
Observe how many selections or keystrokes are needed, how often the person needs help, whether they can repair an error and whether a familiar phrase can be found under pressure. Ask the communicator, not only a caregiver, which layout feels understandable and respectful.
6. Check the whole system
Evaluate screen size, case and mounting, battery life, volume, headphones, environmental noise, privacy, backup communication and whether the device can be used during charging. An app cannot compensate for a screen the person cannot see or a device that is inaccessible when seated in a wheelchair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost, trials and funding: what is and is not established
There is no reliable cross-app price comparison in the available material. Prices, subscriptions, trials, regional taxes, bundled licenses and hardware requirements can change. Do not infer that a built-in feature is free in the broader sense: it may require a compatible device that the person does not own. Conversely, do not assume a paid AAC app is unaffordable until you check local disability funding, school or workplace support and professional-assessment pathways.
Before purchase, record the current price and terms shown for your country, whether the license follows the user across devices, what happens if a subscription ends, and whether saved vocabulary can be exported or backed up. Ask about refunds or trials before investing substantial customization time.

Professional assessment and support
An AAC-experienced speech-language pathologist (SLP) or assistive-technology professional can assess language, cognition, vision, hearing, motor access, positioning and communication environments. Tobii Dynavox describes an SLP assessment and written evaluation of communication needs. That is vendor guidance, not a substitute for independent clinical advice, but it illustrates why an app name alone cannot determine suitability.
Seek professional help especially when the person needs eye gaze or switch scanning, has rapidly changing motor abilities, communicates in more than one language, has aphasia or a progressive condition, or needs a funded dedicated speech-generating device. The communicator should participate in selection and customization to the greatest extent possible.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying for a diagnosis instead of the person
Two people with the same diagnosis may have completely different literacy, vision, motor and language profiles. Select based on observed access and communication goals.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Assuming typing is always fastest
Typing may be efficient for a literate adult but exhausting for someone with motor-planning or visual difficulties. Symbols, word prediction, stored phrases or scanning may reduce effort.
Treating a default grid as permanent
Layouts need adjustment as vocabulary, motor skills and environments change. Preserve familiar motor patterns when consistency helps, and make changes with the communicator rather than for convenience.
Testing only easy requests
Include novel ideas, repairs, disagreement, humor, names and urgent medical information. Real communication requires more than selecting a snack.
Ignoring backup communication
Keep a low-tech backup such as printed key phrases, a letter board or another agreed method when the device is lost, wet, discharged or being repaired. The backup should be practiced, not stored unused.

Assuming every language is supported equally
Voice availability, prediction, symbols, page sets and localization can differ by language. Verify the exact combination of app, page set, voice and operating system.
A practical decision path
- Start with the current device. If it is a supported Apple product and the person types, test Live Speech before buying another app.
- Choose the composition style. Select a text-first candidate when typing is reliable; investigate symbol support when visual language or reduced spelling demand is useful; consider a mixed system when both are needed.
- Match access. If direct touch is unreliable, prioritize documented switch, eye-gaze or scanning support and test the complete hardware setup.
- Run real-message trials. Use the same message list across candidates and record speed, errors, fatigue, independence and repair ability.
- Verify platform and terms. Check the exact device model, operating-system version, language, price, licensing and backup options in your region.
- Plan support. Arrange training, vocabulary updates, mounting and a backup method. Reassess after the communicator has used the system in daily life.
Bottom line
Investigate Live Speech first when a person can type on a supported Apple device and needs straightforward text-to-voice communication. Look at Proloquo4Text for a dedicated text-first workflow, Proloquo2Go when symbols and typing should coexist, and TD Snap when multiple page sets or touch, eye-gaze, switch or scanning access are central. None is universally best. The decisive test is whether the communicator can express the messages they want, with acceptable effort and independence, on the device they can actually access.
