The right speakers for vinyl depend first on your turntable’s output and the rest of your system. Powered speakers have amplification built in; passive speakers need a separate amplifier or receiver. In either case, the signal also needs a phono stage unless your turntable already has one. The options below, drawn from current published guides and a model review, suit different setups rather than establishing one universal winner.
What speakers work with a turntable?
Powered speakers can connect directly to a turntable when the speaker system has the right input and the turntable supplies the right signal. Passive speakers connect to an amplifier or receiver, which then drives the speakers. Crutchfield’s 2026 guide explains the distinction and lists powered models with turntable-oriented inputs (Crutchfield’s powered-speaker guide).

Before choosing speakers, check whether the turntable has a built-in phono stage, sometimes indicated by a switch labeled “PHONO/LINE.” A cartridge produces a low-level phono signal that needs phono-stage processing before it reaches an ordinary line input. The stage can be inside the turntable, in a speaker system with a phono input, or in a separate phono preamp or amplifier. What Hi-Fi? describes this compatibility requirement in its 2026 turntable-speaker guide.
- Turntable set to PHONO, no built-in phono stage: Connect it to a phono input, or add a separate phono preamp before a line input.
- Turntable set to LINE, or with its phono stage enabled: Connect it to a line input. Do not route this signal through a second phono stage.
- Passive speakers: Connect the turntable’s signal through the appropriate phono stage and amplifier before it reaches the speakers.
An RCA connector alone does not prove an input accepts a raw phono signal: RCA inputs may be line-level only. Match the turntable’s setting to the input label and instructions for the exact model.

Powered or passive: which setup fits?
Powered speakers
Powered speakers contain amplification, so they can reduce the number of separate components. A suitable pair may connect directly to a turntable, provided the phono-stage and input requirements match. For example, Crutchfield lists the Klipsch R-50PM with amplification built into the right speaker, an analog RCA input with a phono switch, Bluetooth, optical and USB inputs, and a mono RCA output for a powered subwoofer. Its guide specifies 60 watts per channel and describes the model as suitable for medium-to-large rooms; those are guide-listed product details, not a universal performance ranking (Crutchfield, 2026).
Passive speakers
Passive speakers need a separate amplifier or receiver. The complete signal path is turntable → phono stage (if not built in) → amplifier → passive speakers. This route can suit someone who already owns compatible electronics or wants separate components, but compare the cost and connections of the whole system with a powered pair. The cited guides do not establish that passive speakers always sound better at a given budget.

2026 speaker options compared
| Model or setup | Signal path and phono details | Other connections and expansion | Useful fit and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klipsch R-50PM | Powered; Crutchfield lists an analog stereo RCA input with a phono switch and integrated 60-watt-per-channel amplification. | Bluetooth, optical and USB inputs; mono RCA output for a powered subwoofer. | Crutchfield calls it its “Biggest bang for your buck” option and describes it for medium-to-large rooms. Confirm the phono/line switch matches the turntable output. Source: Crutchfield, 2026. |
| KEF Coda W | Active speaker system; What Hi-Fi? reports an MM phono input and RCA line input. | HDMI ARC, optical, USB-C, Bluetooth and RCA subwoofer output; no built-in Wi-Fi streaming or Spotify Connect, according to the review. | Consider it when direct turntable and TV connections matter more than network streaming. Source: What Hi-Fi? review, February 5, 2026. |
| Triangle AIO Twin | Amplification and connectivity are in the master speaker, linked by cable to the second passive unit. What Hi-Fi?’s guide lists RCA/phono MM line-level. | Optical, Ethernet and 3.5mm inputs, plus Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. | A compact all-in-one alternative, but its rear-firing ports need some space from the wall. What Hi-Fi? identifies the built-in phono stage as a possible weakness. Source: What Hi-Fi?, 2026. |
| Passive speaker pair plus amplifier | Requires an amplifier; add a phono stage if neither the turntable nor amplifier has one. | Connections and subwoofer support depend on the amplifier and other components selected. | Relevant if you own or want a separate amplifier and value component flexibility. Compare the full chain, not just the speaker pair. Source: Crutchfield, 2026; What Hi-Fi?, 2026. |

How to choose for your setup and room
- Check the turntable output. Find the PHONO/LINE switch or the manual’s phono-stage information. Note whether the turntable output is phono-level or line-level.
- Choose the signal path. For fewer boxes, look for powered speakers with the needed phono or line input. If choosing passive speakers, include an amplifier or receiver in the system plan.
- Match the phono stage. A phono-level output needs one phono stage before a line input. If the turntable already outputs line level, use a line input rather than adding another phono stage.
- Check placement space. Account for speaker separation, shelves or stands, and room size. Rear-firing ports may need space from the wall; What Hi-Fi? specifically notes this for the Triangle AIO Twin. Use the model guidance rather than assuming every bookshelf speaker can sit close to a wall.
- Prioritize non-vinyl sources. HDMI ARC can simplify a TV connection; optical and USB serve compatible digital sources; Bluetooth or Wi-Fi may matter for wireless playback. Confirm the specific feature you need—KEF Coda W, for example, has Bluetooth but the cited review says it lacks Wi-Fi and Spotify Connect.
- Decide whether you may add a subwoofer. A subwoofer output, such as those listed for the Klipsch R-50PM and KEF Coda W, provides a connection for a powered subwoofer. It is an expansion option, not a guarantee of better results in every room.
- Verify the exact model and region. Check the model suffix, input labels, cartridge compatibility and regional specifications against the manufacturer’s documentation before buying. Prices, stock and regional variants are not established in the cited material.
Which option should you shortlist?
- Choose the Klipsch R-50PM as a candidate if you want a powered system with a phono switch and several wired and wireless source options, and its dimensions and room suitability work for your space.
- Consider KEF Coda W if an MM phono input and HDMI ARC for a TV are useful, and Wi-Fi streaming is not a requirement.
- Consider Triangle AIO Twin if you want an all-in-one speaker system with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, can accommodate its rear ports, and are comfortable assessing the built-in phono stage for your needs.
- Choose a passive system when you already have, or specifically want, a separate amplifier or receiver. Make sure the complete chain includes a phono stage where needed.
Crutchfield’s FAQ phrases a common setup question as “Do powered speakers need an amplifier or receiver?” For powered models such as the candidates above, amplification is built in; passive speakers still need an amplifier or receiver. The remaining compatibility question is whether the phono stage is present at the right point in the signal path.
