What to look for in a space survival sandbox
“Space survival” can mean very different things. Before choosing, decide which of these systems you actually want to manage:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Exploration scale: Do you want a huge, procedurally generated galaxy and continuous travel, or a smaller space-and-planet setting where construction is the main activity?
- Construction depth: Is building mainly a way to improve your character, or is the design of ships, stations and bases the central challenge?
- Survival pressure: Are hunger and oxygen hard requirements, or is survival a broader label for gathering resources and coping with hazards?
- Combat: Do you want both space and land combat, or would you rather focus on travel and engineering?
- Multiplayer and access: Will you play alone, with a group, or across different platforms?
The three recommendations occupy distinct positions on those axes. That makes them useful alternatives while you wait for another game, but it also means that “best” depends on the system you want to feel most often.
No Man’s Sky: best for galaxy-scale exploration
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as “an exploration and survival game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” That description explains its strongest reason to play: the sense of moving through a very large, generated universe rather than working inside one fixed map.
Why choose it
- Continuous planetary travel: The official description says you can fly seamlessly from one planet to another. The transition between flight and planetary exploration is therefore part of the appeal, rather than a sequence of disconnected maps.
- Discovery-first structure: The galaxy-scale setting makes exploration the clearest reason to choose this game. If your ideal session is finding a new world and deciding where to go next, it is the most direct match in this shortlist.
- Shared play: The press material specifies cross-play, which matters when friends use different supported platforms.
- Broad access: Hello Games lists the game on a broad range of platforms. Because platform catalogs and editions can change, check the current listing for your hardware before buying.
What to expect from survival
The official wording calls the game both exploration and survival, but the supplied description does not identify hunger or oxygen meters as mandatory systems. Do not select No Man’s Sky expecting the specific food-and-oxygen pressure documented for Empyrion. Its documented strength is the combination of exploration, seamless travel and shared access.
Who should skip it
If your main satisfaction comes from designing a machine block by block, the engineering emphasis of Space Engineers is a closer fit. If you want survival needs explicitly stated as oxygen and food, Empyrion provides the clearer match.
Space Engineers: best for engineering and construction
Keen Software House calls Space Engineers “a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets.” The key word for prospective players is engineering: the game treats objects as things you can build, take apart, damage and destroy.

Why construction is the main event
The official description says everything can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed. That creates a different kind of sandbox from a game where a finished ship is merely equipment. In Space Engineers, the ship, station or vehicle is itself the project. Planning a design, building it, modifying it and dealing with damage are all part of the same loop.
Ways to play
Single-player and multiplayer scenarios are both supported. A solo player can therefore treat a scenario as a personal engineering project, while a group can divide work across a shared build. The scenario structure also gives players a way to choose a project rather than relying on one prescribed campaign path.

The official overview includes survival in space and on planets, but it does not state that food and oxygen are the defining requirements. Choose Space Engineers for the consequences of construction and destruction, not because the supplied description promises a particular hunger or oxygen model.
Who should choose something else
Players who want the largest possible exploration backdrop and seamless movement between worlds may prefer No Man’s Sky. Players who specifically want the developer to state that oxygen and food are necessary should look at Empyrion.
Empyrion – Galactic Survival: best for explicit survival pressure
Empyrion’s official overview combines space and planetary exploration with construction, mining, resource gathering, survival, crafting and space and land combat. Its survival description is unusually direct: “You must find oxygen and food – otherwise life in deep space will quickly come to an end.”

Why survival logistics matter
Oxygen and food are not merely themes in the supplied description; they are stated requirements. That makes Empyrion the clearest answer if your question is, “Which game makes me manage the basics of staying alive?” Your decisions about gathering and using resources are tied to whether you can continue living in the open world.

Building options
The official FAQ describes block-built starships, small ships, stations and planetary bases. This gives construction a broad range: you can work on a vehicle, a larger ship, an orbital or space station, or a base on a planet. The same FAQ describes these as buildable forms rather than a single fixed type of shelter.
Combat and environments
The overview includes both space and land combat, alongside exploration above and on planets. If you want survival decisions to coexist with combat in two environments, Empyrion is the most explicit fit of the three.
The trade-off
Empyrion’s focus is systems and logistics rather than the seamless, galaxy-scale travel that defines No Man’s Sky or the all-purpose engineering sandbox described for Space Engineers. That is not a defect; it is the reason to choose it when oxygen, food and resource management are your priority.
Which game has real oxygen and food survival mechanics?
Based on the supplied official descriptions, Empyrion – Galactic Survival is the clear answer. Its survival page explicitly says players must find oxygen and food or life in deep space will end.

No Man’s Sky is officially described as an exploration and survival game, but the available description does not establish oxygen and food as mandatory mechanics. Space Engineers is described as a survival sandbox, yet the available wording likewise does not establish food and oxygen as its defining requirements. If those two meters are the deciding factor, do not infer their presence from the word “survival” alone.
Is No Man’s Sky or Space Engineers better for building?
Space Engineers is the stronger choice when “building” means engineering a machine and living with the consequences of its construction. Its official description specifically says objects can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed, and it positions engineering and construction at the center of the sandbox.
No Man’s Sky is the better choice when building supports exploration rather than defines it. The supplied description emphasizes a procedurally generated galaxy, seamless planetary flight and shared play; it does not present block-by-block engineering as the central appeal.
Use this distinction:
- Choose Space Engineers for structural design, modification and damage-driven problem solving.
- Choose No Man’s Sky when you want to spend more of your time discovering worlds and traveling between them.
- Choose Empyrion when building must also support oxygen, food, mining, crafting and resource logistics.
Exploration, combat and world scale
For the biggest documented exploration premise
No Man’s Sky has the most expansive stated setting: an infinite procedurally generated galaxy. Its seamless flight from one planet to another makes movement through that setting a headline feature.

For two-domain combat
Empyrion’s overview explicitly includes both space and land combat. It also combines those encounters with mining, resource gathering, crafting and survival requirements, so combat sits inside a broader logistics loop.
Solo play, multiplayer and platform decisions
Space Engineers officially supports single-player and multiplayer scenarios, making it the most clearly documented option for choosing between a solo project and a shared build.
No Man’s Sky’s press material specifies cross-play. That is useful when a group is spread across different supported platforms, although the exact platform list should be checked against the current edition and store listing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe supplied Empyrion material describes an open world and its systems but does not provide a comparable cross-play statement. Confirm the current multiplayer and platform details for your intended version before purchasing.
Platform support, cross-play implementation and edition availability can change. Treat the current listing for your hardware as the final authority rather than relying on an old platform list.
How the upcoming-release context changes the choice
Keen’s official Space Engineers 2 announcement said its alpha would launch on January 27, 2025 and described the project as a reimagining built on the VRAGE3 engine. That announcement does not establish a full-release date in 2026.
For someone waiting, the practical implication is simple: Space Engineers is the closest choice in this list if you want to spend the waiting period learning an engineering-centered sandbox, but Space Engineers 2 should be treated as context rather than a dated promise. Check the developer’s current announcement and store information for the latest status before making plans around a release.

A decision guide for your next session
- Start with your non-negotiable mechanic. If it is explicit oxygen and food management, choose Empyrion. If it is engineering and destructible construction, choose Space Engineers. If it is discovering worlds and moving through a generated galaxy, choose No Man’s Sky.
- Decide whether travel or construction should dominate. Seamless planet-to-planet flight points to No Man’s Sky. Assemblable, disassemblable machines point to Space Engineers. Ships, stations and planetary bases combined with survival logistics point to Empyrion.
- Check your group’s hardware. No Man’s Sky documents cross-play; Space Engineers documents solo and multiplayer scenarios. Verify current platform support for any title before purchase.
- Set expectations about the waiting period. If you are waiting specifically for Space Engineers 2, use Space Engineers to explore the established engineering concept, but do not assume the 2025 alpha announcement guarantees a 2026 full release.
Common selection mistakes
- Choosing by the word “survival” alone: The label does not tell you whether oxygen and food are mandatory. Empyrion is the only title here whose supplied description explicitly says they are.
- Assuming every sandbox is a building simulator: No Man’s Sky’s documented emphasis is exploration and travel, while Space Engineers makes construction and engineering central.
- Reading “multiplayer” as universal cross-play: Cross-play is specifically stated for No Man’s Sky. Other multiplayer capabilities and platform combinations should be verified for the current edition.
- Treating an alpha announcement as a finished-release schedule: The Space Engineers 2 announcement gives an alpha date, not a confirmed 2026 full-release date.
- Using old platform information: Store listings and supported hardware can change, so confirm compatibility immediately before buying.
Final recommendation
Pick No Man’s Sky for the broadest documented exploration premise and cross-play. Pick Space Engineers for a sandbox where construction, destruction and engineering decisions are the activity. Pick Empyrion – Galactic Survival when oxygen, food, mining, crafting and combat should keep survival logistics in the foreground.
