Best Space RPGs Like Starfield for Players Who Want More Immersive Exploration

For the closest exploration-first alternative to Starfield, start with No Man’s Sky. Its seamless planet-to-space travel, procedural worlds, survival systems, upgrades, multiplayer, cross-play and VR make discovery the main activity rather than a break between quests. Other games fit different meanings of “immersive”: Outer Wilds makes learning a handcrafted solar system the challenge, Elite Dangerous makes piloting and ship operation demanding, Mass Effect Legendary Edition prioritizes cinematic choices and companions, and Citizen Sleeper turns space role-playing into an intimate, resource-driven story.

Starfield is the baseline: a large, first-person space adventure with authored missions, character progression, planets to visit and an expanding release plan. The recommendations below are not five interchangeable open-worlds. Each one improves a different part of the space-RPG fantasy, so choose by the activity you want to dominate your playtime.

Which space RPG should you play after Starfield?

Use this quick fit guide before choosing a game:

Game Best for What exploration feels like Ship and flight focus Story and social play Platforms identified in the source material
No Man’s Sky Open-ended discovery and co-op Procedural planets, creatures, geology, resource gathering and building; seamless travel from a surface to another planet Fly spacecraft, collect materials and upgrade ships and equipment Shared discoveries, multiplayer and cross-play; continuing updates add worlds and stories PS5, Xbox, PC, Switch, VR and other platforms
Outer Wilds Mystery and deduction A compact handcrafted solar system filled with connected secrets Navigation and environmental hazards are the practical challenge Single-player, knowledge-driven exploration adventure PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch
Elite Dangerous Cockpit realism and long-haul flight Large-scale space simulation with on-foot exploration as well as travel between systems Realistic piloting and deep ship management MMO structure, on-foot combat and an ongoing narrative layer PC, PlayStation and Xbox
Mass Effect Legendary Edition Companions and consequential choices Directed missions and galaxy-spanning locations rather than unrestricted planetary wandering Space travel frames the adventure; piloting is not the central activity Branching decisions affect crew, species and the wider galaxy across a trilogy PC, PlayStation and Xbox
Citizen Sleeper Text-forward role-playing and social immersion Exploration is centered on a space station and its communities No starship-flight sandbox; time and resource choices drive progress Choices, scarce resources and time management shape relationships and survival PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch

The table shows why there is no single winner for every Starfield player. If you want to land repeatedly on strange worlds, choose No Man’s Sky. If you want to understand a tightly designed mystery, choose Outer Wilds. If operating a ship is the fantasy, choose Elite Dangerous. For authored dialogue and party consequences, choose Mass Effect Legendary Edition; for station-based writing and hard choices, choose Citizen Sleeper.

No Man’s Sky: the best seamless exploration alternative

Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as “a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” That sentence captures its main difference from Starfield: the journey itself is the content. You can fly from a planet’s surface into space, travel to another planet you can see, land, scan unfamiliar life, gather materials and improve your equipment without treating each activity as a separate mode.

No Man's Sky - PlayStation 5
  • Embark on an epic voyage, find your own destiny in this epic space adventure
  • Includes 6 years of updates
  • An entire universe to explore on the go in the palm of your hands
  • For the first time ever, PlayStation 5 physical edition as well as Nintendo Switch (physical & digital)

Why it feels more immersive

Exploration has a continuous rhythm. A scan can reveal a creature or geological formation; that discovery points toward a resource, a better tool or a ship upgrade; the upgrade lets you reach a harsher environment. Because the galaxy is procedurally generated, the game emphasizes variety and scale over a finite set of bespoke locations. Hello Games’ press material also describes ongoing major updates that add stars, planets, biomes, creatures and stories, so the available universe has expanded beyond its original August 2016 release.

Where it differs from Starfield

The trade-off is authored density. Starfield’s hand-built missions and faction arcs give named characters and locations a deliberate dramatic shape. No Man’s Sky gives you a larger system of activities—survival, collecting, construction, upgrading and discovery—while asking you to create much of your own purpose. If you need every planet to deliver a bespoke quest, its procedural approach can feel diffuse. If you enjoy setting your own route and turning a find into a personal project, that same openness is the attraction.

Multiplayer, cross-play and VR

The game supports shared discoveries, multiplayer and cross-play, and Hello Games lists VR support alongside console and PC versions. These features change the meaning of exploration: a rare creature or location can become something you show another player rather than a private checklist item. Platform and edition availability can vary by region, so verify the current listing for your system before buying. A physical PS5 edition is a practical option for readers who prefer boxed games, but edition, stock and price should be checked at the time of purchase.

Choose it if…

  • You want to spend most sessions flying, landing, scanning, gathering and building.
  • You prefer an open-ended loop to a tightly directed campaign.
  • You want co-op, cross-play or VR in a space-exploration game.
  • You are comfortable with survival pressure and procedural repetition as part of the experience.

Outer Wilds: the strongest discovery and mystery game

Outer Wilds is a 2019 exploration adventure for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. Its solar system is compact and handcrafted, with planets that conceal secrets connected to a larger mystery. The central progression is not a stronger weapon, a larger ship or a higher character level. It is your understanding of how the system works.

Knowledge is the upgrade

Every expedition can answer a question: why does a structure exist, how does a route open, or what links two apparently unrelated locations? Notes, observations and deductions accumulate into practical knowledge. Once you understand a rule, you can apply it elsewhere, reach a previously inaccessible place or interpret an event that looked meaningless earlier. This produces a particularly strong form of immersion because the player—not an inventory statistic—becomes more capable.

Navigation is part of the puzzle

Travel is not a cinematic transition. Piloting, timing and environmental hazards determine whether you arrive safely and whether you can remain in a location long enough to investigate. The solar system’s layout makes distant clues feel connected: a discovery on one world can explain a mechanism on another. The result is a short, concentrated adventure in which observation and experimentation matter more than clearing a map.

Important expectations

This is not a Starfield-sized character sandbox. You will not build a broad loadout, manage a fleet or wander through an endless catalogue of procedurally generated planets. Its immersion comes from embodied navigation and the satisfaction of solving a coherent mystery. Avoid outside explanations if you can; learning the structure for yourself is the game’s defining reward. If you prefer authored discoveries to infinite scale, Outer Wilds is the better match.

Choose it if…

  • You want every discovery to answer a meaningful question.
  • You enjoy connecting clues and testing theories.
  • You prefer a compact, handcrafted world to a huge procedural galaxy.
  • You want exploration to be the story rather than a route to loot or upgrades.

Elite Dangerous: the best cockpit and ship-management simulation

Elite Dangerous is a 2014 space-flight simulation MMO available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. It treats the ship as an operating environment rather than a fast-travel menu. Realistic piloting, route planning and ship management are the reasons to play, with on-foot exploration and combat adding another layer to the simulation.

What makes the flight feel consequential

Small operational decisions matter. You must learn how your vessel handles, manage its systems and plan journeys that can take you far from familiar stations. The satisfaction comes from competence: a difficult approach, a long expedition or a carefully prepared loadout feels earned because the game asks you to understand the tools you are using. This is a different kind of immersion from Starfield’s cinematic first-person quests.

On-foot exploration and the MMO scale

The game combines cockpit travel with on-foot exploration and combat, allowing a trip to continue after you leave the seat. Its MMO structure supplies a persistent context for trading, travel, combat and discovery, while an ongoing narrative layer gives the wider galaxy a sense of movement. The scale can be exciting, but it also means that some activities demand patience and repetition before they become rewarding.

Learning curve and hardware considerations

Expect a steeper learning curve than in a conventional action RPG. A controller is sufficient, but players who want a more physical cockpit experience may consider flight-control hardware such as a HOTAS setup; compatibility and configuration vary by platform. Do not choose this game expecting a constant stream of hand-authored companion dialogue. Choose it when operating a spacecraft, planning a route and mastering procedures are themselves the fantasy.

Choose it if…

  • You want realistic-feeling flight and detailed ship operation.
  • You enjoy long-haul travel, simulation systems and gradual mastery.
  • You want both cockpit play and on-foot exploration or combat.
  • You are comfortable with an MMO structure and a learning curve.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition: the best authored choices and companions

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a 2021 action-RPG collection for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. It gathers a directed trilogy in which dialogue choices and mission decisions can affect crew members, species and the wider galaxy. Its third-person combat and RPG progression support the central attraction: maintaining relationships and living with the consequences of your decisions.

  • The Odyssey of a Reluctant Hero – Lead Frey on an unforgettable journey in her search for a way home after being mysteriously transported to an ancient, fantastical land.

  • Intuitive, Magic-Enhanced Parkour – Scale walls, vault across canyons, leap from dizzying heights, and dash through vast landscapes; Frey's unique abilities allow her to fluidly traverse the open world with ease
  • Customizable Arsenal of Spells – Take on twisted monsters in magical combat with a wide range of powerful abilities catering to a variety of playstyles – from fast-paced and exhilarating to strategic and methodical

Why Starfield players choose it

If your favorite Starfield moments involved faction stakes, conversations, companions or major moral decisions, this is the most direct recommendation in the group. Characters carry continuity across the trilogy, so a decision made in one game can alter who trusts you, who survives and how later situations unfold. The galaxy feels authored around those people and conflicts rather than generated for freeform surveying.

The exploration trade-off

You will visit many planets and locations, but the experience is mission-led. There is less unrestricted planetary wandering, less resource harvesting and no equivalent to spending an evening simply charting a personal route through a procedural universe. Space travel establishes the scale of the setting; it is not a cockpit simulator. The reward is narrative momentum and a cast whose arcs develop over a sustained campaign.

How to approach the trilogy

Play the games in release order so your choices and relationships can carry forward naturally. Treat optional conversations and loyalty-focused missions as part of the role-playing rather than distractions from the main plot. The collection is best for players who want a clear dramatic structure and are willing to trade some exploratory freedom for stronger continuity between decisions and consequences.

Choose it if…

  • You want companions and dialogue to matter as much as combat.
  • You prefer branching, authored missions to procedural discovery.
  • You want consequences to carry across a multi-game story.
  • You can accept limited freeform piloting in exchange for cinematic pacing.

Citizen Sleeper: the best intimate, text-forward space RPG

Citizen Sleeper is a 2022 narrative RPG for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. Its premise follows corporate-owned consciousnesses in synthetic bodies, and its play revolves around choices, scarce resources and time management on a space station. It is a deliberate alternative to a flight sandbox: the station’s people, routines and pressures are the environment you explore.

How its role-playing works

Each cycle asks you to decide where limited time and resources will have the greatest effect. You might work to stay supplied, help a resident, investigate a personal lead or pursue a longer-term escape. The order matters because opportunities develop while others close. Progress comes from understanding people and systems, not from collecting a stronger rifle or expanding a ship.

Why it belongs on a Starfield list

Starfield players who value conversation, identity and social consequences may find a deeper concentration of those ideas here. The writing keeps attention on relationships and precarious status rather than on the spectacle of a huge galaxy. Its station setting also makes every district and recurring character more legible than a sprawling map can be.

Know what it is not

There is no starship-combat loop, seamless planetary flight or open-world surveying. If your definition of an immersive space RPG requires physically piloting between worlds, choose No Man’s Sky or Elite Dangerous instead. Choose Citizen Sleeper when reading, deciding and managing scarcity sound more compelling than flying.

Choose it if…

  • You want writing, social choices and identity-focused role-playing.
  • You enjoy resource scarcity and time-sensitive decisions.
  • You prefer a dense station community to a galaxy-sized map.
  • You are happy with text-forward play instead of ship combat.

Match the game to the kind of immersion you want

If you want to discover something every time you sit down

Choose No Man’s Sky for an open-ended cycle of scanning, gathering, upgrading and building. Its procedural structure means the game can keep presenting unfamiliar combinations of environments and life, while multiplayer lets you share discoveries. Choose Outer Wilds instead if you want fewer places but stronger connections between clues; its compact system rewards attention rather than accumulation.

If you want the ship itself to be the challenge

Elite Dangerous is the clear choice. It gives flight, route planning and vessel management more weight than the other recommendations. Be ready to learn systems and accept slower progress. None of the other games here offers the same simulation-first cockpit emphasis.

If you want the strongest character arcs

Mass Effect Legendary Edition offers the most sustained companion continuity and branching consequences. Citizen Sleeper is the better choice for intimate, text-led relationships and resource pressure. Both are story-first alternatives, but neither is a substitute for freeform planetary travel.

If multiplayer or VR is essential

The documented options in this group are concentrated in No Man’s Sky, which supports multiplayer, cross-play and VR according to Hello Games’ press material. Check the current platform listing because availability, editions and regional support can change over time. The other recommendations are presented as single-player or MMO experiences without the same combination of cross-play and VR support described for No Man’s Sky.

Platform and purchase checks before you start

Platform information is not permanently fixed, particularly for physical editions and VR compatibility. Before purchasing, confirm:

  • The exact platform version, including whether you need a current-generation edition.
  • Whether multiplayer or cross-play requires a platform subscription in your region.
  • VR headset compatibility and whether the feature is included in the edition you are buying.
  • For a physical copy, the region, disc condition, stock and current price.
  • For an MMO or live-updated game, the current service status and update requirements.

The source material identifies the broad platforms listed in the comparison table, but it does not establish a universal price, subscription requirement or edition name for every region. Treat retailer pages and platform stores as the final authority for those volatile details.

Bottom line: the best Starfield follow-up depends on your priority

Pick No Man’s Sky for the broadest, most continuous exploration loop; it is the closest match when you want to fly, land, discover, survive and build with other players. Pick Outer Wilds for a handcrafted mystery in which knowledge is the only progression that matters. Pick Elite Dangerous for demanding cockpit realism and ship management. Pick Mass Effect Legendary Edition for companions and choices that reshape an authored trilogy. Pick Citizen Sleeper for station-based writing, social decisions and scarce-resource role-playing.
