The right one is the audio driver that matches your laptop’s exact model, Windows version, and audio hardware. Microsoft recommends starting with Windows Update; if that does not fix the problem, try Device Manager and then the laptop maker’s support page.
The “2023” in the original title is historical, not a recommendation to install a package released that year. Driver versions change, and a download that suits one laptop may not suit another.

How to choose the right laptop audio driver
Before downloading anything from a manufacturer, identify your laptop’s manufacturer, exact model, Windows version, and audio device. Microsoft recommends searching the PC manufacturer’s support site by device model and selecting the matching audio driver. Start with Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guidance.
- Match the laptop model: A driver for a different model may not include the right device-specific support.
- Match the operating system: Check that the package supports your Windows version.
- Prefer an official source: Use Windows Update or the laptop maker’s support site rather than an unrelated driver-download site.
- Check the hardware when necessary: Brand names such as Realtek or Intel alone do not establish that a package is right for your laptop.
Update the audio driver in the recommended order
1. Check Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart the laptop and check whether sound works.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first route for audio-driver updates. The available labels can vary slightly by Windows version.

2. Search in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click your audio device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, follow any prompts, and restart if an update is installed.
Windows may say the best driver is already installed even when the laptop manufacturer offers a newer package. If the sound problem remains, check the support page for your exact laptop model rather than assuming the Windows result proves no newer manufacturer driver exists.
3. Install the laptop manufacturer’s matching package
Go to the manufacturer’s official support site, search for the exact model, and select the audio driver for your Windows version. Follow that manufacturer’s installation instructions, then restart. This route is especially relevant if a problem began after upgrading Windows or the driver found through Windows did not resolve it.

Do not choose a package just because its name includes “Realtek,” “Intel,” or “audio.” Laptop makers may provide model-specific packages and supporting components. For example, ASUS instructs affected notebook users to compare the audio hardware identifier and supported driver vendor before obtaining the matching driver from ASUS. That is guidance for relevant ASUS models, not a universal ranking of audio brands.

If the problem persists
On Windows 11, begin with the audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If that does not help, Microsoft documents uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager and restarting; Windows can then reinstall the driver. Microsoft also documents trying the generic Windows audio driver if other options fail. Treat that generic driver as a troubleshooting fallback, not a guaranteed sound-quality improvement. If sound stopped after a Windows update
Install pending Windows updates, restart, and update the audio driver. Microsoft lists incompatible or partially installed drivers as possible causes of sound problems after an update; its Windows audio troubleshooting guidance covers the recommended steps.
Why driver version numbers do not identify a universal best
Audio-driver versions are tied to specific packages and hardware, so a larger or newer version number is not automatically the right choice for your laptop. Microsoft Update Catalog lists separate Realtek packages, including Realtek High Definition Audio version 6.0.9605.1 released on November 14, 2023, and Realtek High Definition Audio (SST) version 6.0.9614.1 released on December 5, 2023. These are distinct catalog entries, not comparative tests or recommendations for an unspecified laptop. Check the Microsoft Update Catalog results only when you can verify that a package applies to your hardware and system.

A driver is also only one part of laptop audio. Windows audio processing can include audio processing objects (APOs) and system effects, so changing the base driver alone may not control every sound feature. See Microsoft Learn’s audio processing object architecture overview.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s stated support end date for Windows 10 was October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Check Microsoft’s Windows audio guidance for current troubleshooting steps, and verify driver availability with your laptop maker for your specific model and operating system.
