Best Soulslike Games With Dedicated PvP Arenas: Elden Ring vs. Dark Souls III and II

Elden Ring is the best all-round choice if you want several dedicated arena rulesets in one game. Its free Colosseum update added arenas in Limgrave, Caelid and Leyndell, with one-on-one Duels, team-based United Combat, free-for-all Combat Ordeal and an optional Spirit Ashes ruleset.

Choose Dark Souls III for a tighter, classic Undead Match structure, or Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin if covenant identity and arena progression matter more than a modern, standalone queue. No reliable cross-platform, region-specific 2026 population comparison establishes which game has the busiest arena, so the recommendations below are based on rules, access and structure rather than queue claims.

At a glance: which Soulslike arena should you play?

Game Dedicated arena system Formats documented by the publisher Access requirement Best fit
Elden Ring Colosseum arenas in Limgrave, Caelid and Leyndell Duels, United Combat, Combat Ordeal and an optional Spirit Ashes ruleset Free Colosseum update Players who want the broadest selection and the clearest modern arena presentation
Dark Souls III Undead Match, with three PvP maps added by the update Duels, free-for-all brawls and team battles for up to five other players Burn Champion’s Bones at the Firelink Shrine bonfire; the package can include the two DLC chapters Players who prefer structured duels and compact group matches
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin Covenant-linked arenas Duels through the Brotherhood of Blood and Blue Sentinels arenas Join the relevant covenant Players who want arena combat tied to covenant identity, ranks and progression

That table captures the practical difference: Elden Ring treats arena play as a broad, visible activity; Dark Souls III packages it as Undead Match; and Dark Souls II makes the arena part of covenant membership. “Best” therefore depends on whether variety, match structure or role-playing progression is your priority.

What makes a PvP arena “dedicated”?

A dedicated arena is a deliberately organized player-versus-player activity rather than an invasion that happens inside the ordinary adventure world. The distinction matters because the games in this list give you a defined ruleset, a purpose-built map or arena space, and a way to seek a particular kind of match.

#1 Best Overall
Elden Ring (PS5) (European Version)
  • Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.

There are three useful questions to ask when comparing them:

  • What can you play? A single duel is a different experience from a team battle or an everyone-against-everyone match.
  • How do you enter? Elden Ring uses a free update, Dark Souls III requires an in-game unlock, and Dark Souls II makes arena access part of covenant progression.
  • Is the arena independent? A standalone activity is easy to understand and repeat, while a covenant arena gives victories an identity within the game’s broader faction system.

The official descriptions establish these formats and requirements, but they do not provide a dependable, current population table broken down by platform, region and date. Treat any claim that one of these games is universally “most active” with caution unless it identifies all three of those variables.

Elden Ring: the best all-round arena package

Elden Ring is the strongest recommendation for most players because its free Colosseum update combines three arena locations with the widest documented range of match types. The official announcement places the arenas in Limgrave, Caelid and Leyndell. A European announcement identifies the Royal Colosseum in Leyndell as the venue for Duels.

What you can play

  • Duels: a one-versus-one format for players who want a direct test of build, spacing and decision-making.
  • United Combat: team-based combat. The team structure changes the value of target selection and coordination compared with a duel.
  • Combat Ordeal: an everyone-against-everyone format. There is no opposing team to rely on, so awareness of several threats is part of the challenge.
  • Spirit Ashes ruleset: an optional ruleset that permits Spirit Ashes. Because it is optional rather than universal, players can choose whether summoned allies belong in the match they want to play.

This variety is the reason Elden Ring wins the all-round category. You can move from a focused 1v1 to team combat or a free-for-all without changing games. It also lets you decide whether your arena experience should include Spirit Ashes, rather than forcing one answer for every match.

What the free update means

The Colosseum arrived as a free update, so the arena feature is not described as a separately purchased expansion. You still need the game updated to the version that contains the Colosseum content. The three named locations are part of the same arena feature, not three unrelated matchmaking systems.

Who should choose it?

Pick Elden Ring when you want the most obvious answer to “does this game have a real PvP arena?” It does: the Colosseum is a dedicated, named activity with multiple venues and explicit rulesets. It is also the safest choice for a group that cannot agree on one match style, since one player can prefer Duels while others choose United Combat or Combat Ordeal.

Rank #3
Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5
  • Elden Ring: Nightreign - Seekers Edition /PS5

Its breadth does not automatically make it the right choice for every specialist. Someone who wants covenant ranks or a deliberately old-school arena identity may prefer Dark Souls II, while a player seeking only the Undead Match format may find Dark Souls III more focused.

Dark Souls III: focused Undead Match combat

Dark Souls III is the best fit for players who want a compact, clearly defined arena system rather than Elden Ring’s broader menu. The mode is called Undead Match. FromSoftware’s FAQ says you unlock it by burning Champion’s Bones at the bonfire in Firelink Shrine.

Formats and match scale

The publisher describes Undead Match as supporting honorable duels, free-for-all brawls and team-based fights. Its description allows battles for up to five other players, meaning the documented upper bound is the initiating player plus as many as five additional participants. The source does not specify a separate player cap for every individual ruleset, so do not assume that every mode always uses the maximum group size.

The FAQ also says the update adds three PvP maps and all game types. That gives Dark Souls III a real arena package rather than a single duel room: you have multiple maps and three broad styles of match, while the overall presentation remains more tightly centered on Undead Match than Elden Ring’s four documented ruleset options.

How to unlock Undead Match

  1. Reach the Firelink Shrine bonfire in your Dark Souls III game.
  2. Obtain Champion’s Bones through the game’s progression.
  3. Use the bonfire option to burn Champion’s Bones.
  4. Enter Undead Match and select the available duel, free-for-all or team format.

The important point is that arena access is an in-game unlock, not simply a menu that appears from the start. If the option is missing, confirm that Champion’s Bones have been burned at the Firelink Shrine bonfire rather than assuming a matchmaking problem.

Do you need the DLC?

The evidence supports a careful answer. The FAQ ties Undead Match to the Champion’s Bones unlock and says the update adds the PvP maps and game types. It separately identifies the Fire Fades package as containing the two DLC chapters. In other words, the complete package includes the DLC chapters, but the arena instructions themselves center on the Champion’s Bones unlock and the update. Check the edition and platform description you are buying instead of assuming that every release bundles the same content.

Dark Souls III is the better choice when your group wants repeated duels, small team fights or free-for-alls under one recognizable mode. It is less suitable if your main reason for playing is a covenant ladder, because the documented arena identity is Undead Match rather than a covenant membership system.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin: covenant-first arenas

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin is the most distinctive option for players who want PvP to feel like membership in a faction. Its dedicated arenas are described through two covenants: the Brotherhood of Blood and the Blue Sentinels.

Brotherhood of Blood

The Brotherhood of Blood offers its members PvP arenas to determine who is the true champion of the Brotherhood. The wording makes membership part of the activity: the arena is not presented as a neutral queue detached from the world’s factions.

Blue Sentinels

Joining the Blue Sentinels opens PvP arenas for dueling fellow members. This gives the game a second covenant-centered route into arena combat, with a different identity from the Brotherhood of Blood.

Why covenant access changes the experience

Covenant entry adds a role-playing decision before you ever select a match. You are not only asking “which ruleset do I want?” but also “which group do I want my victories to represent?” That structure appeals to players who enjoy arena ranks and progression connected to a faction. It can feel less immediate than Elden Ring’s free Colosseum update because access is tied to joining a covenant, but that extra commitment is precisely what makes Dark Souls II unusual among the three.

The available material establishes covenant arenas and member duels; it does not establish a current population advantage, a universal match-size figure or a modern queue comparison. Choose Scholar of the First Sin for its covenant system, not on the assumption that it has the largest active arena.

Choose by the kind of PvP you actually want

Choose Elden Ring for maximum choice

Elden Ring is the direct recommendation if your priority is switching among 1v1, team and free-for-all matches. The optional Spirit Ashes ruleset is another reason to choose it when your group wants control over whether summons are part of the rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Dark Souls III for classic, repeatable match structure

Dark Souls III suits players who want one clearly named arena activity with duels, free-for-alls and team battles. The Champion’s Bones step gives the mode a concrete unlock target, and the three added PvP maps provide more than a single arena room.

Choose Dark Souls II for covenant identity

Scholar of the First Sin is the specialist pick for players who see PvP as part of a faction. The Brotherhood of Blood and Blue Sentinels make covenant choice central, so this is the game to select when arena rank and allegiance matter as much as the fight itself.

Choose according to your edition

For Elden Ring, look for the game updated with the free Colosseum feature. For Dark Souls III, verify that Champion’s Bones and the Undead Match update are available in your installation; the Fire Fades package is identified as containing both DLC chapters. For Dark Souls II, the relevant product is Scholar of the First Sin, which is the edition identified in the launch and product material used for this comparison.

Practical checks before your first match

  • Confirm the content is installed: Elden Ring needs the Colosseum update; Dark Souls III needs the Undead Match unlock; Dark Souls II needs covenant membership.
  • Decide on the rules before organizing a group: a duel, team battle and free-for-all demand different expectations about targets and coordination.
  • For Elden Ring, agree on Spirit Ashes: the ruleset is optional, so make sure everyone understands whether summoned allies are allowed.
  • For Dark Souls III, check the exact participant expectation: the publisher’s “up to five other players” wording is a maximum description, not a promise that every match uses that size.
  • For Dark Souls II, choose the covenant deliberately: switching your focus from Brotherhood of Blood to Blue Sentinels changes the identity of the arena activity you are pursuing.
  • Do not use population claims as a substitute for a rules comparison: queue conditions vary by platform, region, time and date, and no authoritative cross-platform 2026 comparison is established here.

Final ranking

  1. Elden Ring — best overall: three Colosseum locations, four documented ruleset options and a free update make it the most versatile dedicated arena package.
  2. Dark Souls III — best for structured Undead Match play: Champion’s Bones unlocks duels, free-for-alls and team battles across three added PvP maps.
  3. Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin — best for covenant-focused PvP: Brotherhood of Blood and Blue Sentinels tie arena access to faction identity and progression.

If you want one recommendation without additional conditions, start with Elden Ring. If your preference is a specific design philosophy, the decision is clearer: Dark Souls III for focused match structure, or Dark Souls II for covenant-centered arena play.
