Start with Lies of P if you want the closest overall non-FromSoftware answer to Bloodborne’s attack-first rhythm and gothic mood. Choose Nioh 2 for the deepest combat sandbox, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for exacting deflection duels, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for a more forgiving deflect loop, or The Surge 2 for targeted melee in a science-fiction setting.

Bloodborne’s defining idea is not simply “hard enemies.” Its Rally system rewards striking back quickly after taking damage, while side-step movement and limited reliance on shields keep the player moving forward. The games below are ranked by how strongly they reward pressure, retaliation, parries, deflections, or rapid attack decisions—not by atmosphere alone.

What “Bloodborne-style aggressive combat” actually means

Bloodborne encourages you to treat damage as a temporary setback rather than an automatic retreat. After being hit, attacking during the brief Rally window can recover lost health. Side-steps replace the traditional Dark Souls dodge-roll, letting you change angle while staying close enough to punish an opening. A PlayStation editorial guide summarizes the intended attitude as: “shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.”

That gives this comparison five practical tests:

  • Forward pressure: Does the game reward closing distance instead of waiting behind defense?
  • Retaliation timing: Can a quick counterattack recover health, momentum, or another resource after you are hit?
  • Active defense: Do parries, deflections, or precisely timed blocks create offensive openings?
  • Rapid decisions: Does combat ask you to switch attacks, stances, weapons, or targets in the middle of an exchange?
  • Risk and reward: Does staying aggressive expose you to meaningful punishment if your timing fails?

No game here reproduces Bloodborne exactly. Lies of P comes closest in overall rhythm and gothic presentation; Sekiro is closer in the discipline of its defensive timing; and Nioh 2 goes much further into weapon systems, loot, and build construction.

1. Lies of P: the closest all-around match

Why its combat feels familiar

Lies of P is the strongest first recommendation for someone asking, “What should I play after Bloodborne?” PlayStation describes fast precision combat, large boss fights, interconnected environments, and enemies that test your ability to dodge, parry, and attack aggressively. The loop is recognizably Bloodborne-like in spirit: defense is valuable mainly because it creates the next offensive opportunity.

Successful parries can negate damage and stagger enemies, according to TechRadar’s description. That makes a parry an active attack setup rather than a passive block. Dodging remains important when a strike cannot be parried safely, and bosses demand that you decide quickly whether to stay in range, disengage, or risk another hit to build pressure.

Weapon customization without losing a directed adventure

The defining equipment system lets you mix a blade and a hilt. TechRadar notes that this combination changes a weapon’s speed, moveset, and special attacks. The result is more than cosmetic crafting: the same basic components can be tuned toward different attack rhythms, reach, or handling. You get experimentation without the sprawling number of parallel systems found in Nioh 2.

GamesRadar describes Krat as a Belle Époque or steampunk-like puppet wasteland and says the game “almost feels more like a Bloodborne-like than just a Soulslike.” The setting supplies the gothic machinery, oppressive streets, and grotesque enemies that many players miss most when they leave Yharnam.

Structure, difficulty, and platforms

The game is relatively linear but densely connected, with a story-led route and major boss encounters. Its September 18, 2023 release was developed by Neowiz and Round8 Studio. GamesRadar lists PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X versions.

Choose it when you want a focused campaign, memorable gothic atmosphere, and demanding timing without committing to a loot-heavy mission structure. It is not a Rally clone: the offensive reward comes primarily from parry, stagger, and weapon decisions rather than recovering health through every successful counterattack.

2. Nioh 2: the deepest and fastest combat sandbox

Why it rewards constant activity

Nioh 2 is the best choice when “aggressive” means having several offensive systems active at once. GamesRadar characterizes it as a fast “masocore” action RPG built around clashes, a Ki system, weapon-specific skill trees, and yokai abilities. Careful timing can restore Ki, letting you continue attacking, reposition, or use another technique instead of waiting for a slow regeneration cycle.

TechRadar emphasizes that the game has no shields and offers many weapon types, including katanas, kusarigama, and switchglaives. That absence of a conventional shield keeps the emphasis on spacing, evasion, timing, and attack selection. Each weapon changes how you approach an opening, and the game expects you to learn those differences rather than settle on one universal strike.

Ki, stances, and yokai abilities

Ki is both stamina and an offensive planning resource. Spending too much leaves you vulnerable; restoring it through correct timing keeps the exchange in your favor. Weapon stances and skill trees add another layer, while yokai abilities can answer threats that ordinary attacks cannot. GamesRadar specifically notes that some yokai abilities can parry huge attacks, giving you a way to meet oversized enemy moves with aggression instead of retreat.

This makes Nioh 2 more system-dense than Bloodborne. You are not only reading an enemy’s animation; you are also deciding which stance, skill, weapon, or yokai ability best converts that opening. The payoff is a much broader combat sandbox, but the cost is a steeper learning and menu-management burden.

Mission structure and audience

The game uses level-based missions rather than a single continuous route. GamesRadar dates it to March 12, 2020, identifies Team Ninja as developer, and lists PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. TechRadar describes it as exceptionally difficult but rewarding and shows PlayStation 4 editions in its retail coverage.

Pick Nioh 2 if you want to optimize builds, experiment with several weapons, and keep attacking through a long series of demanding encounters. Pick Lies of P instead if a more controlled, atmospheric campaign matters more than mechanical breadth.

3. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: pure deflection discipline

Posture instead of conventional health trading

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the cleanest recommendation for players who want combat to feel like a duel. PlayStation describes a system centered on blocking and deflections: repeated successful deflections push an enemy’s posture toward a breaking point, creating an opening for a Death Blow.

That changes the question you ask during a fight. In Bloodborne, you may accept a hit and retaliate during Rally. In Sekiro, you generally want to meet the incoming attack at the correct instant. A sequence of deflections can be more valuable than backing away, because it simultaneously protects you and destabilizes the opponent.

Why it is less of a conventional Soulslike

Sekiro has a more focused progression model and less conventional RPG build variety than the other games in this list. The precision challenge is therefore concentrated in execution rather than equipment experimentation. You cannot solve every wall by changing to a different weapon class or rebuilding your character; improvement usually comes from learning the timing and responding correctly.

Choose it when you want the tightest sword-duel timing and are willing to practice deflections until they become reliable. If you prefer several viable builds or extensive loot decisions, Nioh 2 offers a broader toolbox. If you want gothic scenery and weapon assembly, Lies of P is the closer tonal match.

4. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty: aggressive parries with a gentler entry curve

Deflect to preserve momentum

PlayStation presents Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty as a demanding action adventure set in a dark vision of the Later Han Dynasty. Its central instruction is to practice Deflect so you can maintain momentum. Aggression also improves Morale Rank, tying forward pressure to your strength during exploration rather than treating combat and progression as separate activities.

The Spirit gauge gives each exchange another decision. GameSpot describes Spirit as a resource that powers attacks and can absorb damage. Spending it carelessly can leave you exposed, while successful deflections and well-timed pressure let you keep control of the fight.

  • Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
  • Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!

Why newcomers may prefer it to Sekiro

The deflect mechanic is inspired by Sekiro, but GameSpot and TechRadar describe it as more forgiving. TechRadar calls the parry satisfying and says the first playthrough is more forgiving than the other games in its list. Defeated players can reclaim Genuine Qi, according to PlayStation, reducing the sense that one failed attempt permanently erases all progress.

Checkpoints still respawn enemies, so route knowledge and resource management remain part of the challenge. The Morale system also means that exploration and repeated encounters matter: building momentum can make later sections more manageable, while reckless losses can leave you entering a fight underprepared.

Choose Wo Long if you want active deflection, a visible reward for aggression, and a less punishing first step into this style of combat. Choose Sekiro for the stricter duel test, or Lies of P for the stronger gothic resemblance.

5. The Surge 2: targeted melee in a science-fiction world

Every limb is a tactical decision

The Surge 2 transfers the close-range pressure of a Soulslike into science-fiction industrial ruins. GameSpot lists a September 24, 2019 release from Deck13 Interactive for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Its signature mechanic is body-part targeting. You can aim at an unarmored section to hit a weak point, or deliberately sever a protected limb to obtain materials needed to upgrade your combat rig. This turns each encounter into a choice between immediate safety and long-term equipment progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How targeting changes aggressive play

Targeting creates a different risk profile from Bloodborne’s Rally system. You are not primarily trying to recover health by striking back; you are deciding whether to expose yourself while lining up the exact part that provides the upgrade material you need. Staying close improves your ability to control the target, but a mistimed attempt can leave you vulnerable.

Pick The Surge 2 when atmosphere matters less than a distinctive melee system and a science-fiction setting. It is the outlier in this ranking: its combat is aggressive because of deliberate targeting and upgrade risk, not because it reproduces Bloodborne’s gothic pacing.

Platform and edition checks before buying

Platform availability is not uniform. GamesRadar lists Lies of P on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, while its listing for Nioh 2 covers PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. GameSpot lists The Surge 2 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The cited material does not state a complete platform list for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

Check the store page for your region and platform before purchase. Edition names, backward-compatibility status, physical inventory, and pricing can change; the cited retail pages show offers but do not establish a universal price or ongoing availability.

How to adapt your Bloodborne habits

Start by identifying the game’s offensive resource

Bloodborne teaches you to look for Rally opportunities. In Lies of P, learn which attacks can be parried safely and how stagger windows support a follow-up. In Nioh 2, watch Ki and choose the stance or skill that lets you continue pressure without exhausting yourself. In Sekiro and Wo Long, treat deflection timing and Spirit or posture as the center of the exchange. In The Surge 2, decide whether the target’s limb is worth the exposure required to sever it.

Do not assume every dodge has Bloodborne’s purpose

Bloodborne’s side-step keeps you close to the enemy. Other games may make a deflection, stance change, or targeted strike more valuable than a lateral dodge. If you retreat automatically after every hit, you may give up the very resource the game expects you to build through pressure.

Separate atmosphere from mechanics

Lies of P is the closest tonal match because Krat combines gothic architecture, Belle Époque styling, machinery, and puppets. Nioh 2 and Wo Long use historical Japanese and Chinese settings with supernatural elements, while The Surge 2 is industrial science fiction. Sekiro delivers FromSoftware’s focused ninja setting but is mechanically narrower than a conventional build-driven Soulslike.

Important differences from Bloodborne

  • No direct Rally replacement: The recommendations reward aggression through different systems—parry stagger, Ki recovery, posture damage, Spirit and Morale, or limb rewards.
  • Different build expectations: Nioh 2 is the most equipment- and skill-heavy; Sekiro intentionally offers less conventional RPG customization.
  • Different progression structures: Lies of P is relatively linear and story-led, while Nioh 2 uses level-based missions. The other games should not be assumed to share either structure.
  • Different meanings of “parry”: A successful parry in Lies of P can negate damage and help stagger; Sekiro uses repeated deflections to break posture; Wo Long uses Deflect to preserve momentum and manage Spirit.
  • Different difficulty pressures: Lies of P and Nioh 2 are demanding, Sekiro insists on precise deflection, Wo Long is comparatively approachable on a first playthrough, and The Surge 2 adds targeting risk to ordinary melee danger.

The practical verdict is straightforward: begin with Lies of P for the best blend of aggressive combat and gothic mood; move to Nioh 2 when you want more systems, Sekiro when timing is the whole point, Wo Long when you want a softer deflecting entry, and The Surge 2 when you want the same close-range commitment in science fiction.
