What makes a game feel like the Dark Souls III endgame?
Dark Souls is built around “tense dungeon exploration, the fear that comes from encountering fearsome enemies, and the joy from each new discovery,” according to FromSoftware’s official portfolio. The Soul of Cinder-era mood adds a particularly bleak, exhausted quality: familiar fantasy imagery is breaking down, every shortcut feels earned and a late-game fight tests everything you have learned.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat combination is more specific than simply asking for a difficult action RPG. Some Soulslikes copy stamina management and dodge timing but use mission-based stages. Others deliver a dark setting while replacing shield-and-roll play with parries, deflections or aggressive healing. The recommendations below separate those identities instead of pretending that every game is interchangeable with Dark Souls.

Bloodborne: choose it for the closest atmosphere
Bloodborne is the first recommendation when what you miss is oppressive Gothic horror rather than a particular character-stat screen. FromSoftware places it in Yharnam, “a city filled with diseases, blood and death,” where a Hunter pursues transformed creatures through a mysterious world. The setting is more concentrated and nightmarish than Dark Souls’ broad medieval fantasy, but the emphasis on dangerous discovery and environmental storytelling feels immediately related.
Why it matches the Soul of Cinder mood
The game’s combat design pushes you to recover health by staying on offense after taking damage. That changes the emotional rhythm of an encounter: retreating is not always the safest answer, and a wounded Hunter may need to close distance and strike back. Trick weapons give the weapon choice a strong visual and mechanical identity, with transformations that alter how an attack sequence behaves.
Its exploration is compact rather than sprawling. You learn a dense urban route, open shortcuts and recognize how apparently separate locations connect. That makes each return trip feel purposeful without asking you to cross a giant open field. If your favorite Dark Souls moments are reading a hostile district, finding a door that leads back to safety and then meeting a grotesque boss, Bloodborne is the most direct match.
The limitation you must accept
GamesRadar lists Bloodborne as a PS4 release. Platform access is therefore the deciding question; the cited coverage does not establish a PC, Xbox or Switch edition. Do not choose it expecting the broader platform reach of the newer recommendations in this list.
Lies of P: the strongest focused third-party campaign
Lies of P is the safest pick when you want a polished, authored journey instead of an enormous open world. It released on September 18, 2023 for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Its puppet protagonist moves through the ruined city of Krat, a setting that combines fairy-tale imagery, industrial decay and horror without requiring you to decode a continent-sized map.
What makes it familiar without being a clone
GamesRadar describes its customizable melee weapons and offensive combat as an approach that “innovates the genre while still feeling familiar.” That balance matters for a Dark Souls player: the basic expectation of learning enemy timing remains readable, while weapon construction gives you room to shape how attacks feel. The campaign’s authored structure also means the next objective is easier to identify than in a fully open-ended game.
Choose Lies of P when you want momentum. You can concentrate on enemy encounters, weapon decisions and the story of Krat rather than deciding whether to abandon a difficult fight for an entirely different region. It is a good bridge from Dark Souls III for players who value a coherent route and a defined ending.
Who should look elsewhere
If your favorite part of Dark Souls is wandering away from a boss, discovering an unrelated zone and returning much later with a new strategy, Lies of P’s focused campaign may feel less liberating than Elden Ring. Its strength is direction and polish, not maximum geographic freedom.
Elden Ring: the best answer when exploration comes first
Elden Ring is the recommendation for players who want the freedom to refuse a bad matchup. When an encounter overwhelms you, you can explore elsewhere, find equipment or levels, develop a different tactic and return when the problem suits your character better. That loop preserves the satisfaction of overcoming a demanding fight while removing the need to solve every obstacle in a single sequence.

Why its structure changes the difficulty curve
An open world gives you more than scenery. It creates multiple routes to progress, so a failed attempt can become a navigation decision rather than a wall. You may spend time learning a new area, testing equipment or simply building confidence before revisiting the original threat. For players who love Dark Souls’ discovery but want more room to choose the order of discoveries, this is the broadest fit.
The trade-off is focus. A single interconnected fortress can produce a tighter sense of place than a world made of many large regions. Elden Ring is therefore less about reproducing one specific endgame mood and more about expanding the same risk-and-reward philosophy across a larger field.

VGI’s 2025 report lists Elden Ring at 15.6 million units in its post-2015 Steam table and 16.3 million in its PlayStation table. The same Steam table lists Dark Souls III at 9.2 million units, while the PlayStation table lists Bloodborne at 25.6 million and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice at 8.1 million. These are figures from named VGI tables, not a universal, platform-combined sales total, so use them as report-specific context rather than a definitive ranking of every edition.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: choose it for deflection mastery
Sekiro is for the player who wants combat to become a timing discipline. Its central language is deflection and posture pressure: success comes from reading an attack, meeting it at the right moment and maintaining enough pressure to break an opponent’s posture. That is a different commitment from Dark Souls’ broad toolkit of shields, rolls and interchangeable builds.
Why it feels unlike a normal Souls RPG
Sekiro’s appeal is concentrated in the character’s combat identity rather than a large menu of fundamentally different builds. You are not selecting it to experiment endlessly with stat distributions or to turn every weapon into a separate role. You are selecting it because you want repeated practice to make your timing sharper.
This makes Sekiro an excellent follow-up if your favorite Dark Souls encounters were deliberate duels. It is a weaker fit if your priority is replaying the same campaign with radically different character archetypes. VGI lists 8.1 million units for Sekiro in its 2025 post-2015 PlayStation table; that figure identifies the table and platform scope rather than representing all possible editions.
Nioh 2: the deep systems choice
Nioh 2, released March 12, 2020 for PC, PS4 and PS5, is built for players who enjoy studying combat systems as much as studying level layouts. GamesRadar highlights its ki system, which rewards recovering at the right time, plus weapon-specific skill trees, fast clashes and yokai abilities. The review describes the combat’s “fluidity, depth and intensity” as incredible.
How its combat differs from Dark Souls
Dark Souls often asks whether you can create enough space to survive an exchange. Nioh 2 adds another layer: after spending ki during attacks and movement, your recovery timing becomes an active part of the fight. Weapon-specific skill trees then encourage you to learn the particular options of a chosen moveset instead of relying on one universal attack pattern.
Yokai abilities add another set of decisions to that martial foundation. The result is faster and denser than a conventional roll-and-space game. You will spend more time comparing options, refining a preferred weapon and deciding which systems are worth mastering.

- The Complete Dark Souls III Experience All on One Disc: Includes the award-winning base game, PLUS both complete DLC expansion chapters: Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City.
- Intense Combat Action: Challenging, genre-defining gameplay. Diversified combat action allows players to craft their own unique style.
- Team up for some jolly good cooperation or test your ability in PvP battle: All PvP maps unlocked and accessible. Improved online matchmaking functionality.
Who should choose it
Pick Nioh 2 if you enjoy optimization, loot and replaying encounters to improve execution. Its mission-based structure is a better fit for players who like discrete challenges than for those who need one continuous, interconnected map. The game can satisfy the craving for demanding combat while taking you in a distinctly different direction from Dark Souls’ slower exploratory rhythm.

Nioh 3: a current open-world, high-speed option
PC Gamer identifies Nioh 3 as a February 6, 2026 release from Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo. It shifts the series toward an open-world format while retaining its systems-heavy combat. The review reports 14 melee weapon types, customizable skills and moves, a faster style-shifting system and four large maps rather than one interconnected world.
Why it is a good purchase anchor for action specialists
Four large maps give you more room to roam than a mission list, but the structure is still segmented. That distinction matters if you are specifically chasing Dark Souls’ seamless shortcuts: Nioh 3 offers open areas without reproducing a single continuous labyrinth. Its appeal is the ability to move quickly between combat styles and tune a weapon’s skill package to your preferences.
The 14 weapon types and customizable moves make Nioh 3 the strongest choice here for players who regard a moveset as a long-term project. You can approach the same enemy with different weapon identities and style choices, then refine the attacks you actually use.
Check performance before committing on PC
PC Gamer notes that performance can vary by hardware before patches. Check the current system requirements, patch status and edition available in your region before buying. That is a practical distinction from the older, established-hardware recommendation of Nioh 2.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers: a newer branching-world alternative
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers released July 24, 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. TechRadar describes a grim interpretation of the Ming Dynasty, body horror, branching Dark Souls-style level design and combat that favors evasion over blocking in a way reminiscent of Bloodborne.
Why its flexibility stands out
Weapon skills give each armament a distinct active identity, while free unlimited skill-tree respecs let you change direction without treating an early choice as permanent. That combination suits players who want to experiment with builds but do not want to restart a campaign whenever a different approach becomes attractive.
The branching structure places Wuchang between a tightly authored route and a fully open world. You get meaningful route choices and a classic level-based sense of place, while the Ming-era supernatural setting gives the experience its own identity rather than copying medieval Europe.
Platform-specific buying note
For readers searching specifically for “Wuchang: Fallen Feathers PS5,” the cited coverage confirms a PS5 edition alongside Xbox Series X|S and PC versions. Verify the edition, marketplace and current regional price at the time of purchase; availability and pricing can change by storefront.

Choose by the part of Dark Souls you miss
If atmosphere matters most
Choose Bloodborne for Gothic disease, blood and death in a compact city. Choose Wuchang for Ming-era body horror and a newer branching structure. Choose Lies of P for a ruined, authored city campaign with a clearer route through its story.
If exploration matters most
Choose Elden Ring when the ability to leave a difficult encounter and return with new levels, equipment or tactics is the deciding feature. Choose Wuchang when you want branching classic-style levels rather than a vast open world.
If combat mastery matters most
Choose Sekiro for deflection timing and posture pressure. Choose Nioh 2 for ki recovery, weapon skill trees and yokai abilities. Choose Nioh 3 for faster style shifting, 14 weapon types and customizable moves.
If build experimentation matters most
Nioh 2 and Nioh 3 provide the deepest systems-oriented routes through weapon skills, loot and move customization. Wuchang is the least punishing place to change direction because its skill-tree respecs are free and unlimited. Bloodborne and Sekiro are better choices when you want a strong, defined combat identity rather than endless respec decisions.

If you want a compact story campaign
Lies of P is the clearest choice. Its ruined Krat setting and authored progression keep the journey focused, while customizable melee weapons preserve room for personal playstyle.
Difficulty, repetition and the adjustment from Dark Souls
Do not use “Soulslike” as a promise that every game will test the same skill. Bloodborne asks you to stay aggressive after taking damage. Sekiro asks you to make accurate defensive timings. Nioh 2 and Nioh 3 ask you to understand layered systems, weapon options and recovery windows. Elden Ring gives you more opportunities to change the conditions of a difficult fight. Lies of P and Wuchang sit closer to the familiar dodge-and-melee rhythm while adding their own weapon and progression decisions.
Before choosing, decide what kind of repetition you tolerate. If repeating a duel to improve one timing window sounds satisfying, Sekiro is the specialist pick. If repeating missions to optimize gear and movesets sounds better, choose Nioh 2 or Nioh 3. If you would rather postpone a wall and discover another route, choose Elden Ring. If you want the next attempt to happen inside a directed campaign, choose Lies of P.
A practical selection checklist
- Start with your platform. Bloodborne is listed for PS4; Lies of P covers PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X; Nioh 2 covers PC, PS4 and PS5; Wuchang covers PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. For Elden Ring, VGI’s cited tables document Steam and PlayStation editions; for Sekiro, they document a PlayStation edition. Nioh 3’s cited review is PC-based, so confirm the edition you can buy.
- Pick your combat language. Select aggressive recovery for Bloodborne, deflection for Sekiro, ki and weapon trees for Nioh 2, style shifting for Nioh 3, or weapon skills and evasion for Wuchang.
- Choose the map shape. Elden Ring is the open-world option; Wuchang offers branching levels; Nioh 3 uses four large maps; Nioh 2 is mission-based; Bloodborne is compact; Lies of P is a focused authored campaign.
- Set your tolerance for build commitment. Wuchang allows free unlimited respecs. Nioh’s systems reward deep optimization. Sekiro is intentionally more fixed. Make that choice before buying rather than expecting every game to offer Dark Souls-style flexibility.
- Check current edition details. Release dates, patches, storefront availability and prices differ by region. PC players should pay particular attention to Nioh 3 performance, which PC Gamer reports can vary by hardware before patches.
Final recommendation
Start with Bloodborne if you have the required PlayStation access and want the closest Gothic, aggressive and compact experience. Choose Elden Ring for the broadest exploration freedom, Sekiro for a pure deflection challenge, Lies of P for the most focused third-party campaign, Nioh 2 or Nioh 3 for fast combat systems, and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers for a current branching-world game that lets you respec freely.
