For the strongest noise cancelling, start with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen); for call clarity and long battery life, consider the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless. Neither is a proven across-the-board winner over the Sony WH-1000XM5: the evidence comes from different reviews and generations, and comfort depends heavily on fit. Apple users may prefer AirPods Max 2 for its ecosystem, while Sony’s WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000XM4C are options if you want to stay with the brand.
Which alternative fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Model to consider | What the evidence supports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strongest noise cancelling | Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | What Hi-Fi? says it narrowly beats Sony’s WH-1000XM6 for outright sound-blocking intensity. | That comparison is with XM6, not a matched test against XM5 for calls or comfort. |
| Outdoor calls and long battery life | Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless | What Hi-Fi? reports clear, natural speech and effective reduction of wind and traffic in an outdoor call test. | The review says its ANC remains behind current Sony and Bose flagships; its call observations are not a standardized comparison with XM5. |
| Apple-device integration | Apple AirPods Max 2 | A relevant option for Apple users who value ecosystem integration. | Tom’s Guide says its ANC trails Bose and Sony, and its Android experience is limited. |
| A newer Sony flagship | Sony WH-1000XM6 | The newer premium Sony model. | It is a different generation; the cited comparison positions Bose Ultra Gen 2 against XM6 for ANC. |
| Lower-cost Sony option | Sony WH-1000XM4C | What Hi-Fi? has discussed it as a competitive value option. | Design and fit differ from XM5; no current price is established here. |
Best alternative for noise cancelling: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
If blocking outside sound is the deciding factor, the second-generation Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones are the clearest alternative to shortlist. What Hi-Fi? says they narrowly edge the Sony WH-1000XM6 for outright ANC intensity, and Tom’s Guide also assesses their noise cancelling favorably. That makes Bose a strong ANC-led pick, but it does not establish that Gen 2 beats XM5 in a direct, matched test.

Generation matters when using comfort or microphone comparisons: the direct comparison material available here covers the original QuietComfort Ultra, not Gen 2. Do not assume its results automatically apply to the newer headphones.
Comfort: treat fit as a personal decision
The most relevant direct comparison is between the WH-1000XM5 and the original Bose QuietComfort Ultra. RTINGS’ comparison text says its reviewer found the Bose more comfortable for long listening sessions. It lists both models at about 250 g, so that reported comfort preference cannot be explained by a meaningful difference in listed weight alone.
#1 Best Overall
- PREMIUM NOISE CANCELLATION: Two processors control 8 microphones for unprecedented noise cancellation. With Auto NC Optimizer, noise canceling is automatically optimized based on your wearing conditions and environment.
- MAGNIFICENT SOUND: Engineered to perfection with the new Integrated Processor V1.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR HANDS-FREE CALLING: 4 beamforming microphones, precise voice pickup, and advanced audio signal processing.
- LONG BATTERY LIFE: Up to 30-hour battery life with quick charging (3 min charge for 3 hours of playback).
- ULTRA-COMFORTABLE: Lightweight design with soft fit leather.
This is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal fit ranking—and it says nothing definitive about the second-generation Bose. Head shape, clamping feel, ear-pad contact, and heat can all affect long-wear comfort. If possible, try the exact generation you plan to buy and check the return policy before relying on another model’s comfort reputation.
Call quality: distinguish quiet rooms from noisy streets
For outdoor speech, consider Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless
In What Hi-Fi?’s review, speech on an outdoor call came across as clear and natural, while wind and traffic were reduced effectively. The review describes listening at a reasonable volume and reports 57 hours of battery life with ANC on. That figure is from the review’s test, not a guaranteed runtime for every volume or usage pattern.

What the original Bose-versus-Sony comparison says
RTINGS’ comparison text for the original QuietComfort Ultra and XM5 favors Sony in noisy conditions and Bose in quiet conditions. This is a condition-dependent finding, not a single winner for all calls, and it should not be transferred to Bose Ultra Gen 2. Since these results use different products and review methods from the Momentum 5 test, they do not support a definitive overall call-quality ranking across all three.

Battery life and Apple compatibility
For Apple AirPods Max 2, Tom’s Guide lists 20 hours of battery life and notes that its ANC remains below Bose or Sony. Its Android experience is limited, making it a more natural fit for someone already invested in Apple devices than for a mixed-device household. The 20-hour figure and the Momentum 5 test result are from different sources and conditions, so they are not a controlled head-to-head battery comparison.

Should you buy a different Sony instead?
If you prefer Sony’s controls, sound profile, or device workflow, compare the WH-1000XM6 with the XM5 rather than assuming another brand is automatically an upgrade. The XM6 is the newer premium model; What Hi-Fi? continues to recommend the XM5 when it is discounted. The same outlet’s recent WH-1000XM4C review presents that model as a value contender, but its design and fit differ from the XM5.
Prices and retailer stock change frequently, and the available evidence does not establish a single current price for these models. Compare the price at the retailer you plan to use and weigh any XM5 discount against the newer Sony or Bose features you actually want.

How to make the choice
- Set your main priority. Choose Bose Ultra Gen 2 as the ANC-led candidate, Momentum 5 for the reviewed combination of outdoor-call clarity and long ANC-on runtime, or AirPods Max 2 when Apple integration matters most.
- Check the exact generation. The Bose comfort and conditional microphone comparison cited here is for the original Ultra, while current ANC coverage concerns Ultra Gen 2. Sennheiser’s cited review is for Momentum 5, not Momentum 4.
- Assess fit and return terms. Published weight and another reviewer’s comfort impression cannot predict how a headset will feel on you over several hours.
- Compare current prices and availability. XM5 may be attractive at a discount, but no stable, current price comparison is established here.
