For clearer dialogue on the Sonos Beam (Gen 2), start by turning on Speech Enhancement while TV audio is playing. For late-night or low-volume viewing, try Night Sound. Then tune the Beam for your room with Trueplay if you have a compatible iPhone or iPad, and make small EQ adjustments only if needed. Sonos does not publish a universal numeric EQ preset for dialogue on this model.
Start with Speech Enhancement for dialogue
Speech Enhancement is the first setting to try when voices are hard to follow. Sonos says it boosts frequencies associated with the human voice. To enable it, play TV audio through the Beam, open the Sonos app’s System view, select the home-theater speaker to open Now Playing, then switch on Speech Enhancement. The feature’s Low, Medium, High, and Max levels are described for Arc Ultra; they should not be assumed to be available on Beam (Gen 2).

Use Night Sound for quiet viewing
Night Sound is designed for low-volume TV listening. It reduces the intensity of loud sounds and raises quieter sounds, which can make dialogue easier to hear without increasing the overall volume. Turn it on or off from the Beam’s Now Playing view while TV audio is playing. Try it for quiet sessions; switch it off when you prefer the full impact of louder effects.
Try Trueplay to account for your room
Trueplay measures how sound reflects from walls, furnishings, and other surfaces, then adjusts the speaker’s tuning. Because room acoustics affect what you hear, it is worth trying after the basic playback settings are in place. For the tuning process, keep the room as quiet as possible, cover as much of it as you can while moving the iOS device smoothly, and do not change the speaker volume during the tuning sound. Retune if you move the Beam or change the system configuration. You can toggle Trueplay in the app to compare the result.
#1 Best Overall
- Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
- Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
- Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
- Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
- Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.
Sonos currently lists standard Trueplay support for eligible iOS and iPadOS devices, not Android devices. Its quick-tuning list includes Arc Ultra, Beam Ultra, Era 100, Era 100 Pro, and Era 300—not Beam (Gen 2). Owners of this Beam generally need a supported iPhone or iPad for standard Trueplay tuning. Check Sonos’s current compatibility information if you are unsure whether your device is supported.

Adjust EQ gently rather than using a supposed preset
In the Sonos app, open the Beam’s Sound > EQ controls to adjust bass, treble, and Loudness. Bass changes lower-frequency sounds; treble changes higher-frequency sounds, including vocals; Loudness boosts certain frequencies during low-volume listening. These controls can be adjusted after Trueplay.
Sonos does not provide a fixed Beam (Gen 2) EQ position for clearer dialogue, so there is no official numeric preset to copy. As a practical listening method—not a tested preset—change one control by a small amount, replay a familiar dialogue scene at a similar volume, and keep the change only if voices become easier to follow without making the rest of the sound unpleasant. Compare EQ changes separately from Trueplay so you can tell which adjustment helped.

If the settings or TV playback are unavailable
Beam (Gen 2) must first be set up in the Sonos app to play TV audio, and it is not compatible with the Sonos S1 Controller app. Sonos’s setup instructions use the included HDMI cable, with an optical adapter where applicable, and guide you through connecting the Beam to the TV. Voice commands for TV power require HDMI-ARC and HDMI-CEC; they will not work through the optical adapter.
