These are recommendations based on published specifications and compatibility information, not independent field-test rankings.
Check compatibility before wattage
A plug that fits can still damage a camera. Read the camera manual and match all of these items:
- Required input voltage and maximum current.
- Connector dimensions, polarity and cable length.
- Whether external power can be used with internal batteries installed.
- Whether the accessory charges a proprietary lithium pack, powers the camera directly, or does both.
- Whether third-party power accessories affect the warranty.
Common camera inputs include 6 V, 7.4 V and 12 V, but the correct value is model-specific. Do not connect an unregulated generic panel merely because its barrel plug fits.

How a trail-camera solar system works
A practical system combines a photovoltaic panel, charge-control electronics, a rechargeable storage battery and a regulated camera output. The panel produces energy in daylight; the internal battery runs the camera at night and buffers cloudy periods. A bare panel without storage cannot maintain a camera after sunset.
Panel wattage is a peak rating, not a daily energy guarantee. Latitude, season, shade, snow, angle, dirt, temperature, cable losses and charging efficiency all reduce harvest. Cellular uploads, video, audio, live view and weak signal conditions increase demand compared with local still-photo recording.
Compare stored energy correctly
mAh values are only comparable when battery voltage is also known. Use watt-hours = mAh × volts ÷ 1,000. The R5’s specified 5,000 mAh at 7.2 V is approximately 36 Wh before conversion losses; the older Tactacam panel’s 5,200 mAh at 7.2 V is approximately 37.4 Wh. These are nominal calculations, not guaranteed usable output.

Tactacam says the R5 charges compatible REVEAL lithium packs but not ordinary AA batteries. Its “30% faster charging” statement is a manufacturer comparison with the prior V2, not an independent measurement. Advanced Insights reporting requires a REVEAL 4.0 or Pro 4.0 using the barrel-jack connection.
Older REVEAL panel and folding panel
The earlier panel lists a 7.2 V/5,200 mAh lithium battery, 12 V/1.5 A output, 2.5 W panel, more than 18% conversion efficiency, 75–120-hour solar charging and a 5.5 mm × 2.1 mm plug. Do not assume its output is interchangeable with the R5; check the camera generation in the owner’s manual.
The REVEAL Folding Solar Panel uses two 3.6 W panels (7.2 W combined) and a 4,900 mAh lithium battery. Its larger, portable format may suit temporary deployments, but available information does not establish better long-term field performance than the R5.
SPYPOINT SPLB-22 10W: broad-compatibility candidate
SPYPOINT describes the SPLB-22 as a 10 W lithium-battery solar panel with four output-cord choices for cameras from multiple manufacturers. The U.S. page showed $129.99, or $103.99 for Insider Club members, and in-stock status on August 18, 2026; both price and inventory can change. The page does not establish the battery’s watt-hours, each cord’s exact voltage/current, polarity or replacement-cable policy. Customer comments mention difficulty replacing a damaged cable; that is buyer feedback, not a confirmed manufacturer-wide defect. Check the product page and SPYPOINT’s solar-option guidance before ordering.

Moultrie Solar Power Pack: best for EDGE owners
Moultrie describes an integrated power bank, USB-C and barrel-jack connections, IP65 water resistance, varmint-resistant cables, cable locks, an angled mount and up to nine days without sunlight. That runtime is a manufacturer claim whose result depends on camera workload and conditions. Moultrie’s EDGE page calls the product “3.4W” in one place and “10W” elsewhere; verify the exact SKU and generation rather than repeating both figures. Accessory pages showed $59.99 for a 3.4 W pack and $107.99 sale/$119.99 regular for a two-pack, with some listings out of stock when observed. See Moultrie EDGE, camera accessories and power products.
The POWER MAG III is a companion battery, not a solar panel. Moultrie specifies 5,000 mAh, 54 Wh, 10.8 V nominal, 12 V/1.5 A output, 18 W peak output, USB-C charging and 800 charge cycles for EDGE cameras.
Browning Solar Trail Camera Power Pack
Browning’s pack is designed for Browning trail cameras and continually reenergizes six rechargeable AA NiMH cells through its adjustable solar cell. The replaceable AA architecture suits older cameras, but the manufacturer does not provide the transparent watt-hour specification found on some lithium systems. See the Browning product page.
Stealth Cam SOL-PAK
Stealth Cam lists a 3,000 mAh solar battery pack with weather-resistant ABS housing, suitability for wind and rain, compatibility with cameras using an external 12 V DC jack and the ability to link units. Confirm plug size, polarity, current limits and the camera manual before relying on the “12 V” description. Details are on the SOL-PAK page and external-battery category.

Choose the right size for your workload
- Low-volume still photos: A camera-specific pack with modest panel output may work where direct sun is reliable.
- Moderate cellular stills: Prefer integrated storage and enough panel area to recover daily consumption.
- High-volume cellular or video: Choose a larger panel and battery, reduce transmission frequency where possible, and plan a backup power source.
- Winter or shaded sites: Increase panel and storage margins, use a suitable cold-weather battery, and mount the panel in the brightest nearby opening.
“Continuous” or “unlimited” operation is conditional on adequate sunlight, correct installation, a healthy storage battery and manageable camera demand.
Installation checklist
- Identify the exact camera model and generation.
- Read its external-power requirements and confirm voltage, polarity, connector and battery rules.
- Prefer an integrated-battery system for overnight and cloudy-weather operation.
- Mount the panel independently if the camera is under canopy; in the Northern Hemisphere, aim toward the strongest southern exposure available.
- Keep the connector pointing downward and form a drip loop.
- Secure the cable against bark, rodents, ice and wind movement without sharp bends.
- Leave an internal backup battery installed only if the camera manual permits it.
- Protect the panel and camera against theft and ensure the camera door can still open.
- Bench-test power, photos, videos, charging indicators and connectors before remote deployment.
- Review the first status reports and revisit after the first cloudy or cold period.
Solar panel or camera with built-in solar?
An integrated-solar camera is simpler: there is no separate panel, cable or mounting point. Moultrie’s EDGE listings include solar-integrated models. An external panel is usually better when the camera must stay concealed under trees while the panel sits in a clearing, or when you need more storage and easier replacement. Fixed panels can be shaded by branches, snow or the camera’s own position.
Troubleshooting failures
The camera stopped reporting
- Check the last app status, battery percentage and voltage.
- Look for shade, snow, dirt or a shifted mount.
- Inspect the cable for chewing, abrasion, corrosion or a loose plug.
- Test the camera with a known-good battery or approved adapter.
- Test or replace the cable before replacing the panel, if a supported replacement exists.
The app says 100% but the camera dies
Battery percentage may describe the camera battery rather than the panel battery. Tactacam notes that an older V1 panel can cause misleading 100% readings; distinguish camera charge, panel charge and external-power status in the app. See Tactacam’s explanation.
Winter or cloudy-weather failure
Short days, low sun angles, snow, cold batteries and increased cellular transmission can overwhelm a marginal system. Increase panel and storage capacity, clear snow, reduce video or transmission frequency and retain an approved backup battery.
What to avoid
- Bare panels with no energy storage when the camera must operate overnight.
- Unknown or unregulated voltage.
- Any product lacking the correct cable, polarity and connector specification.
- Systems with no weather protection or no practical cable-replacement path.
- Small packs used for high-volume cellular video without a measured energy margin.
- Leaving AA batteries installed without checking the camera maker’s instructions.
The Bottom Line
Match the power system to the camera first, then size it for workload and winter sunlight. Choose the Tactacam R5 for compatible REVEAL cameras, the Moultrie pack for EDGE systems, Browning’s pack for Browning cameras, and consider SPYPOINT or Stealth Cam only after verifying every electrical detail. A panel that can be independently aimed, stores energy and has supportable cables will outperform a higher-wattage product that is shaded or electrically mismatched.
