Choose a continuous stream or a scheduled broadcast
Continuous looping
A 24/7 stream needs to keep playing, usually by looping a video or playlist. Check that the tool explicitly supports looping or playlists, then verify its recovery behavior after an interruption. A service that can start a prerecorded broadcast at a scheduled time may still stop when that video ends.
Scheduled prerecorded video
Scheduling suits a one-time or time-limited broadcast. StreamYard documents automatic starts for scheduled prerecorded videos, but its published duration caps make it a different fit from an always-on loop.

What to compare before choosing software
- Playback model: Does it loop a video or playlist continuously, or only schedule a single broadcast?
- Host requirements: Must a computer stay online, or does the provider run playback in the cloud?
- Media limits: Check supported file types and codecs, maximum duration and upload size, resolution, and any storage allowance.
- Recovery and monitoring: Find out whether the stream reconnects after an interruption and how you can see stream health.
- Channel capacity: Confirm concurrent streams or channels included and whether you can manage separate YouTube stream keys.
- Cost and runtime: Compare the billing period, included runtime, storage, and any overages or additional slot charges in current terms.
- Archives: Check whether streams are archived and what duration or retention limits apply.
Set up the YouTube side first
- Enable live streaming on your channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before launch.
- Choose an encoder or cloud service. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its setup workflow covers enabling live streaming, installing an encoder, connecting equipment, and connecting the encoder.
- Connect the channel using its stream key. Keep the key private, use it only in the intended streaming service, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed. Verify the destination is your YouTube channel before starting.
- Test a short broadcast. Confirm the video and audio play correctly, the stream appears on the intended channel, and the platform reports a healthy connection before relying on an unattended setup.

Restream also says YouTube has no stream-duration limit, but archives streams only when they are under 12 hours. That archive qualification matters for long-running channels: a continuous stream should not be assumed to produce one complete YouTube archive.

Do it yourself with OBS Studio
OBS is the clearest no-charge local starting point when you can keep the host online and take responsibility for operation. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software for recording and live streaming. The steps below describe the setup sequence; menu names and controls can vary between OBS versions, so check the current OBS interface and YouTube instructions.
- Enable YouTube Live for the channel and allow up to 24 hours if this is the first activation.
- Prepare the video or playlist. Confirm you have broadcast rights, that the files play correctly, and that the selected playback method can repeat them continuously. OBS is an encoder; verify the specific loop behavior in your chosen playback source or workflow rather than assuming any scheduled video will loop.
- Configure video and audio. Use an H.264 video output, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval as described in Restream’s July 9, 2026 YouTube guidance; choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to the source and connection. Use AAC or MP3 audio.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect an account or enter the stream key from YouTube’s live control room. Do not disclose or publish the key.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Check image, sound, stream health, and playback continuity. Correct dropped frames, audio gaps, or wrong-channel settings before making the stream public.
- Keep the host operational. Leave the computer and OBS running, prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, maintain a stable internet connection, and monitor the stream. Plan how you will respond to a crash, network failure, or YouTube disconnect.
Where the local approach can fail
- The computer sleeps or reboots: adjust power settings and arrange for someone to restart OBS if needed.
- The internet drops: the broadcast may disconnect; confirm reconnect behavior and monitor the channel after outages.
- The source ends instead of looping: test the full playlist duration and repeat behavior before launch.
- The stream key is rejected or exposed: confirm it belongs to the correct channel, reconnect with the current key, and reset it if compromised.

Only stream video and audio that you own or have permission to broadcast. A license for music or footage should cover the intended live use and any relevant territories or platforms; owning a copy of a file does not by itself establish broadcast rights.
