For most creators, start with Bluesky. It offers a familiar public-conversation experience, portable identity, custom feeds and selectable moderation while allowing hosting and services to become more distributed over time. Choose Mastodon if a self-governing community matters more than a single global network. Farcaster suits crypto-native creators who want blockchain-registered identity and composable applications. Nostr provides the strongest relay-level resistance to a single platform removing your account, but it also has the weakest discovery, the most manual key management and the least predictable reach.
No network eliminates moderation or guarantees an audience. The useful question is which layer can restrict you: a company, a server administrator, a relay operator, an app, a labeler or your own feed settings.

What “fewer centralized bans” actually means
On a conventional social network, one company controls the account system, hosting, recommendation surfaces, moderation rules and often the only practical route to your followers. A suspension can therefore remove both your publishing channel and your accumulated audience at once.

Before moving, decide whether your priority is account portability, community governance, blockchain identity or the ability to publish through multiple relays. Those are different benefits and involve different costs.
At-a-glance comparison
| Priority | Best fit | Why it fits | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easiest transition and portable account | Bluesky | Familiar interface, portable identity, custom feeds and a choice of moderation services | The default service is still a major hosted and moderated provider |
| Community-run governance | Mastodon | Independent servers establish local rules and can govern themselves | Server choice changes the experience, and migration is incomplete |
| Blockchain identity and developer composability | Farcaster | Key-based identities, a smart-contract registry and an ecosystem of composable apps | Wallets, cryptocurrency fees and key management add friction |
| Maximum relay-level censorship resistance | Nostr | Multiple relays let you change distribution points instead of relying on one host | Reach is unpredictable and account management is manual |
Compare any network on five practical axes: whether identity and your social graph can move, who can moderate or defederate you, how discovery works, how difficult recovery is, and what hosting, storage or transaction costs apply.
Bluesky: the best starting point for most creators
What is decentralized
Bluesky is built on the open-source AT Protocol. The protocol standardizes identity, follows and data, supports federation and account portability, and allows alternative hosting and moderation services. You can use your own domain as a username and choose among more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds, according to Bluesky’s FAQ.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The practical promise is that changing hosting should preserve your username, friends and posts. That is materially different from starting over on a new conventional platform after a suspension or service shutdown.
Why creators find it approachable
- The public-conversation format resembles the services many audiences already understand.
- Custom feeds let users select different ranking and topic experiences instead of accepting one universal recommendation algorithm.
- Composable moderation allows a person or community to use labels and filtering services that match their risk tolerance.
- A domain-based username can connect your social identity to a website you control.
Scale and moderation are still centralized in practice
Bluesky’s official FAQ reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026. Its 2025 overview described growth from 25 million to 41 million users, 1.41 billion posts, 9.97 million reports reviewed, 16.49 million labels applied and 2.45 million violating items removed. By October 2025, reply filtering had reduced reports of antisocial behavior by 79 percent. These figures demonstrate a large service and active enforcement; they do not indicate an absence of bans.
Bluesky’s default infrastructure remains a significant hosted service layer. Alternative providers and moderation services are possible under the protocol, but a creator still depends on an app, host and moderation configuration to reach people. Portability reduces the damage of changing providers; it does not guarantee that every provider will accept your content or that followers will see every post.

Best use case
Choose Bluesky when you want a low-friction public network, a portable identity and control over feeds and moderation without operating your own server. It is the strongest first experiment for a creator who wants fewer single-company dependencies but still needs familiar discovery.
Mastodon: strongest community-level governance
How federation works
Mastodon is a federation of independently operated servers, commonly called instances. Each server has administrators, community norms and moderation policies. People on different servers can communicate through the ActivityPub federation, but an administrator can block another server, preventing communication between users on those servers.
This structure moves an important decision from one global company to many local communities. A server can be small and specialized, nonprofit-oriented, professionally managed or run by an individual. Your immediate environment is therefore shaped by the server you choose rather than by a single universal policy.
What happens if you move
You can move to another server, but migration is not as seamless as the portable-identity model promised by AT Protocol. A move can change your username, and replies to posts made under the old account can be lost or disconnected. Managed providers remove much of the operational burden; self-hosting gives you more control but requires technical expertise and money.
Current direction
Mastodon’s 2026 strategy emphasizes community ownership, trust and safety, governance, regulatory compliance, better discovery and easier server administration. Its stated vision is “A human-centred social web that serves the common good,” and its mission is “Connect the world through thriving online communities.” The organization’s EU-based nonprofit parent entity is part of that governance model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBest use case
Mastodon is the better choice when the rules and culture of your local community matter more than a single global feed. It works well for creators willing to spend time selecting a server and building relationships within that community. It is less suitable if you require effortless migration, one support organization or predictable access to every other server.

Farcaster: portable blockchain identity for crypto-native creators
Identity and data model
Farcaster’s protocol documentation describes a network built around decentralized, secure and recoverable identities, permissionless data access and near-real-time propagation. An identity is a numeric identifier controlled by key pairs and registered through a smart-contract registry. Users can rotate keys and choose namespaces, creating an account model that is not tied to one application.
Costs and operational friction
The technical paper reports that users pay cryptocurrency to register a public key and to obtain hub storage. At the time described in that paper, those fees were collected centrally by the Farcaster team. The model gives identity a durable registry entry, but it introduces wallet setup, transaction fees and key-management responsibilities that ordinary social users may not want.
What creators gain
- App portability: compatible applications can use the same registered identity and data.
- Key control: you can rotate keys rather than treating one permanent credential as your only access mechanism.
- Composability: developers can build applications around permissionless access to protocol data.
What creators give up
Farcaster is not optimized for mainstream onboarding. A creator must understand wallets, protect keys and budget for protocol-related fees. Its audience is most naturally concentrated among developers, crypto users and communities already comfortable with blockchain concepts. For those groups, the identity model can be more valuable than broad consumer reach.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Best use case
Pick Farcaster when you already use crypto wallets or are building an application-oriented community and want an identity that is registered independently of a particular client. It is a poor first choice if your audience expects instant signup, password-style recovery and no transaction costs.
Nostr: maximum relay-level resistance, minimum predictability
How relays change the failure model
Nostr uses multiple relays instead of one central host. A relay can block a user, but the user can publish through another relay or several relays at once. That makes it harder for one operator to suppress every copy of a message.
There is an important limitation: two users can communicate only when they share at least one relay. If their relay sets do not overlap, a message may not reach the other person. The result is a network where distribution depends on relay selection rather than on one universal index.

The trade-off is deliberate chaos
A technical paper by Martin Kleppmann quotes the Nostr creator warning: “there are no guarantees of anything […] to use Nostr one must embrace the inherent chaos.” Discovery, delivery and moderation can therefore vary substantially between clients and relay combinations.

You must decide how to protect, back up and, if necessary, replace your keys before building an audience there.
Best use case
Nostr fits a creator whose first priority is resistance to centralized control and who is comfortable choosing relays, handling keys and accepting uneven reach. It is a poor fit for a creator who needs polished onboarding, predictable search or simple account recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between the four
Choose Bluesky when portability and familiarity come first
Use Bluesky if you want a conventional public-conversation workflow with more control over feeds, labels and hosting than a single-company network provides. The portable identity model makes it the most practical starting point for testing an alternative without immediately taking on server or wallet operations.
Choose Mastodon when local governance is the product
Use Mastodon if you want your community to define and enforce its own norms. Spend time evaluating server rules, moderation responsiveness and export or move procedures before inviting your audience. Your server is part of your publishing environment, not just a login location.
Choose Farcaster when your audience is already crypto-native
Use Farcaster if key-based identity, composable applications and blockchain registration solve a real problem for your work. Do not choose it merely because “decentralized” sounds safer; wallet and key obligations are part of the daily operating cost.
Best Value
Choose Nostr when censorship resistance outweighs reach
Use Nostr when you would rather maintain several relay paths than depend on one host, and when you can tolerate inconsistent delivery. Plan for a technically literate audience and communicate where your posts can be found.
A practical migration plan for creators
- Keep a canonical home. Maintain a website and an email list that you control. Social protocols can change, hide posts or lose access to an account; an owned contact channel gives your audience another route to you.
- Claim a consistent identity. Publish the same canonical handle or domain on at least two networks. Tell readers which account is official and how to verify it.
- Export what each service permits. Save posts, media and follower relationships where export tools are available. Treat an export as an archive, not as a guarantee that every relationship can be re-imported.
- Document recovery credentials. For Farcaster and Nostr, record the relevant keys and recovery procedure in a secure offline location. Never publish a private key or store the only copy on the account you are trying to protect.
- Separate publishing from distribution. A post may remain stored while a server, relay, app, labeler or user setting hides it. Monitor more than one client or relay when the distinction matters.
- Start with a small cadence. Publish a limited series on each network before moving your full audience. Compare replies, meaningful discovery, moderation incidents and the time required to operate the account.
- Announce redundancy. Once two channels are active, make the addresses visible on your website, profile bios and email footer so a sudden suspension does not strand followers.
Operational pitfalls and fixes
Assuming decentralization means no moderation
Every option has a filtering point. Bluesky uses hosted services, labels and feeds; Mastodon servers can enforce local rules or defederate; Farcaster applications and key registries still involve infrastructure and fees; Nostr relays can block users. State your moderation expectations clearly and maintain a second channel rather than promising immunity from enforcement.
Choosing a server or relay only for size
A large server or popular relay may improve discovery but can also create a concentrated point of failure. Review rules, moderation contacts, uptime expectations and export options. For Nostr, use more than one relay when the client supports it so that one operator is not your only distribution path.
Confusing stored data with audience access
Persistence does not equal reach. A post can still exist while a feed, labeler, server block or relay choice prevents people from seeing it. Track where your audience actually receives updates and provide a direct link from your owned channels.
Neglecting key and account recovery
Passwords and support tickets are familiar recovery mechanisms; protocol keys are not. Farcaster and Nostr require deliberate credential handling. Create backups before publishing regularly, test that you can use them, and decide who can access them if your work is a team effort.
Moving everyone before testing the workflow
Discovery, moderation and posting tools differ substantially. Run a small publishing cadence first, record the time spent on setup and moderation, and ask a few trusted followers whether they can find and reply to your posts. Scale only after the process works for both you and your audience.
Bottom line
Bluesky is the sensible default for a creator seeking fewer centralized dependencies without abandoning familiar public conversation. Mastodon is the strongest choice for community-owned governance, Farcaster for blockchain-based identity and composable applications, and Nostr for maximum relay-level resistance when unpredictable reach is acceptable. Whichever you select, keep an owned website and email list, publish a consistent identity on at least two networks, and treat moderation and recovery as distribution engineering rather than as guarantees that no one can ever block you.
