The best smartphone gift is the one that fits the recipient’s budget, preferred operating system and everyday needs—not a universal “best” pick. For a premium Apple gift, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the US and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299; other current buying guides also point to options ranging from the Pixel 10a to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Match a candidate to the person, then check its price and availability where they live.
How to choose a phone for someone else
Start with the recipient rather than a ranking. A phone that suits someone who wants a large screen and advanced cameras may be a poor gift for someone who prefers a compact device, uses a different operating system, or wants to spend less.

- Budget: Decide the total amount you can spend, including any case or other accessory. Compare the price of the exact storage configuration and purchase terms available locally.
- Operating system: If the recipient already uses iOS or Android, staying with that system can make the gift easier to adopt. Consider their existing apps, accessories and habits.
- Size: A large-screen phone can suit video, reading and multitasking, but may be less comfortable to carry or use one-handed.
- Camera priorities: Ask whether the person cares most about everyday photos, particular camera controls, or simply having a dependable camera. A specification alone does not establish which phone takes better pictures.
- Battery expectations: Think about how often they can charge and how they use their phone. Manufacturer battery claims are not directly comparable across brands without consistent testing.
- Support and availability: Check the manufacturer’s current software-support commitment, regional features, local inventory and final price before buying. Do not assume those details are the same in every country.
Premium gifts for someone who wants an iPhone
iPhone 18 Pro
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, and says availability began September 18. Its US starting price is $1,199. Apple lists an A20 Pro chip, iOS 27 and a 48MP main camera with variable aperture. Those specifications make it a candidate for someone who wants a current premium iPhone and is interested in camera controls, but they are not independent evidence of how it compares with other phones in everyday use. Apple’s announcement describes the product and its regional availability information.
iPhone 18 Pro Max
The Pro Max starts at $1,299 in the US, according to Apple. It is the larger premium option in the announced line; check the physical size and price of the exact configuration before choosing it for someone else. Apple’s announcement attributes this statement to Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing: “With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence.” That is Apple’s description of its product, not an independent test result.

Other phones to consider by recipient fit
Recent editorial buying guides include several other models worth checking, but those lists are not one consistent cross-brand test. Treat them as a starting set of candidates, not as a definitive ranking of performance, camera quality or value.

Make the gift easier to get right
- Check the recipient’s current phone. Confirm the operating system they use and whether they would welcome a change before buying across platforms.
- Set a firm total budget. Compare the full local price of the chosen model and any accessories you intend to include.
- Shortlist by use and size. Choose candidates that match their camera interests, screen preference and day-to-day habits; avoid treating a guide’s order as a universal verdict.
- Verify the exact model and terms. Check regional availability, storage configuration, carrier or retailer conditions, and the manufacturer’s support information.
- Buy accessories by exact compatibility. If adding a case, confirm the precise phone model and accessory fit before purchase.
