Why the NPU matters
The neural processing unit (NPU) is specialized for the mathematical operations used by many AI models. Samsung Galaxy S25 and S25 Ultra: the best ecosystem-focused alternative
Samsung’s January 22, 2025 Mobile Press announcement describes the S25 platform as a “first-of-its-kind customized Snapdragon® 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy chipset” designed to enable greater on-device Galaxy AI processing. Samsung’s Global Newsroom says the Personal Data Engine safely analyzes your data on-device to power personalized AI features.
Samsung also publishes generational figures of a 40% NPU improvement, 37% CPU improvement, and 30% GPU improvement for the S25 platform. Those are Samsung’s own 2025 comparisons, not an independent benchmark, so use them as an indication of the company’s hardware positioning rather than a guarantee of a particular response time or battery result.
Why Galaxy S25 can be the better assistant phone
- Cross-app actions: Samsung documents Gemini activation across Samsung and Google apps, plus selected third-party applications. This is useful when an instruction needs to move beyond a chat window and trigger an action in another app.

A reliable offline test
- Update the phone and the relevant assistant apps while connected.
- Download any model or language package the settings page offers for local use.
- Enable airplane mode, then turn Wi-Fi back off so the phone has no network path.
- Try a short local task, such as analyzing visible text or performing a supported on-device transformation.
- Try a current-information question and an action involving a remote account; record which requests fail or ask you to reconnect.
- Repeat the test after changing language, region, or default-assistant settings, because those choices can change availability.

Privacy: local processing is helpful, but permissions still matter

Local AI avoids a network round trip, but it is not free. Running neural operations consumes power, and prolonged camera, screen, or voice context can add display and sensor use on top of model inference. Short requests may feel instantaneous; a long session can warm the phone and reduce battery life.
- Use local processing for quick, repeated tasks when responsiveness and privacy matter.
- Expect heavier generation or multimodal sessions to use more power than a simple text command.
- Keep the phone’s software current, because scheduling and model optimizations can change after updates.
- When traveling, carry a compatible USB-C charger or power bank; accessories can extend runtime but cannot add on-device AI capability to a phone that lacks the necessary hardware and software.

Regional availability, updates, and buying checks
