A smart plug adds app-based switching and schedules to a compatible plug-in device—making a lamp, for example, controllable remotely without replacing the lamp. The right choice depends on the smart-home platform you already use, the space around the outlet, the connected device’s electrical requirements, and whether you need energy reporting or outdoor protection.
How to choose a smart plug
Start with the device and the outlet, then check the plug’s software features. A plug’s compatibility with one platform does not establish that every feature will work identically in every other platform.

- Check your ecosystem. Match the exact plug model to the platform you already use, such as Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, or a Matter-compatible controller. Confirm support for your region and hardware revision.
- Check outlet fit. Compare the plug’s dimensions and position with neighboring outlets. A compact body can help preserve access to an adjacent socket.
- Check setup requirements. Confirm whether the plug connects directly or requires a separate hub, and review the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
- Choose the automation you need. Look for schedules, timers, routines, or vacation mode as appropriate. Confirm which controls are available in the plug’s app and in your chosen smart-home platform.
- Match the electrical rating. Compare the plug’s stated voltage and current capacity with the connected device’s requirements. Follow both the appliance and plug instructions.
- Decide whether energy monitoring or outdoor protection matters. These are model-specific capabilities, not features to assume from the phrase “smart plug.”

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe trade-off is that the reviewed P125M does not provide energy monitoring. Bob Vila also mentions occasional lag with Alexa. If energy-use data is a priority, consider a model that explicitly lists that feature rather than choosing the P125M for compatibility alone.

When energy monitoring matters
D-Link lists real-time energy use, total-consumption tracking, schedules, and overuse alerts for its North American PM-01M. The manufacturer gives the model’s rating as 120 V / 15 A / 1800 W and says it is compatible with Matter controllers. These are manufacturer claims, not independently verified measurements. Check whether the reporting and alerts you want are available through your chosen controller or the plug’s own app. D-Link PM-01M product page

- SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
- COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
- CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
- NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps
Energy reporting can help you observe a connected device’s use, but the presence of monitoring or schedules does not guarantee lower energy bills. Any reduction depends on what you plug in and how you use it.

For patios and other outdoor locations
Use a plug made for outdoor conditions rather than assuming an indoor model is suitable. Tom’s Guide describes the TP-Link Tapo Matter Outdoor Smart Plug as having two outlets, IP65 resistance, a 6.5-inch cord, and Matter compatibility. Treat those as the review’s reported details, and consult the manufacturer’s current manual for the product’s exact environmental and electrical limits before installation.
