Then match screen size and physical controls to the room. For a wall-mounted family dashboard, the 15.6-inch Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen, 2024) is the clearest fit; for a Google Home setup, Nest Hub Max offers a 10-inch screen and camera, but Google’s store listed it out of stock when checked. Stock and model names can change, so verify the exact generation and listing before buying.
Start with the assistant already in your home
A display is most useful when it works naturally with the speakers, routines, and smart-home devices you already have. If your household uses Echo speakers and Alexa routines, an Echo Show keeps that experience in one system. If you use Nest speakers and Google Home, Nest Hub Max is the more consistent choice. Switching ecosystems can mean rebuilding routines or changing how household members control devices, so treat assistant compatibility as the first filter rather than a minor feature.

Think in terms of room and placement: compact screens suit bedside or smaller counter spaces, mid-size models fit everyday kitchen use, and the largest screens make better shared dashboards. The clearest documented large-screen option is Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen, 2024). Amazon specifies a 15.6-inch Full HD screen (1920 × 1080), customizable widgets, Fire TV, and a 13-megapixel camera with a physical camera cover. Its size makes it better suited to a kitchen wall or shared household area than a crowded bedside table.

Amazon also identifies Echo Show 11 (2025 release) and Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release) in developer documentation for Zigbee hub capability. Those model references do not establish that every Echo Show has Zigbee, nor do they make the smaller screens interchangeable: check the live retail listing and product box for the exact generation and features.

Choose a screen for the room, not just the spec sheet
For a shared family dashboard
Echo Show 15’s 15.6-inch screen and widgets make it the strongest documented fit here for shared information, photos, and video. Its Fire TV support also suits a space where people may watch content from the display. Before buying, decide whether it will hang on a wall or sit on a counter: the wall hardware is included, but Amazon lists counter stands and under-cabinet mounts as separate purchases.

For a kitchen counter or smaller room
A compact or mid-size Echo Show is easier to place where a large screen would dominate the counter. Echo Show 8 (2025 release) is one specific camera-equipped option; its documented physical control disables the microphones and camera. Check its current retail name, dimensions, and generation before ordering, since the available lineup and naming can change.

Nest Hub Max pairs a 10-inch screen with Google Home hub functionality, Matter compatibility, and Chromecast built-in. Its listed camera supports auto-framing, and the device has a mic/camera switch. Google’s product page listed it out of stock at the time checked, so do not assume the official store currently has inventory.

Check smart-home support model by model
Smart-home standards and hub capabilities are not uniform across every display in a brand’s range. Amazon’s developer documentation lists Zigbee hub capability for Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Show 11 (2025 release), and Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release). Google lists Matter compatibility and Google Home hub functionality for Nest Hub Max. If a particular device, protocol, or routine matters, check its compatibility against the exact display generation rather than inferring support from the brand name.
Compare camera controls and privacy
Do not assume one model’s camera controls apply across an entire lineup. Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen, 2024) has a physical camera cover. Amazon’s setup documentation for Echo Show 8 (2025 release) describes a physical button that enables or disables the microphones and camera. Nest Hub Max specifications list a camera and a mic/camera switch. If you want the camera unavailable at certain times, look for the physical control on the precise model you plan to buy and confirm what it disables.

Plan installation before ordering
For Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21, Amazon says the box includes the wall-mount hardware. A counter stand, under-cabinet mount, and extension cables are separately available, so budget for an accessory if wall placement is not right for your room. Measure the intended space, check that a power outlet is reachable, and decide whether the screen can be viewed comfortably from where people will use it.

When a tablet makes more sense
If you use an iPhone and HomeKit and want a flexible screen rather than a dedicated assistant display, a tablet can be an alternative. Tom’s Guide points to the 2025 Apple iPad as a smart-display-like option, but it is a general-purpose tablet, not a dedicated smart display. That distinction matters if you want an always-ready household screen with built-in smart-home hub functions.
Availability and discontinued alternatives
Product stock and model names are time-sensitive. Google’s store showed Nest Hub Max out of stock when checked, while TechRadar reports Meta Portal Go as discontinued. Portal Go should not be treated as a current new-purchase recommendation; second-hand availability is a separate consideration. Check the manufacturer or retailer listing for current stock, exact generation, and regional availability before deciding.
