A controller can have a shorter body yet still feel large if its grips flare widely or its triggers sit far forward. Evaluate the player’s reach in a normal seated position rather than relying on an age label.

Check the left-stick reach
The player should rest the left thumb on the stick without sliding the palm down or rotating the wrist sharply. Ask them to move the stick through a full circle. If the thumb loses contact at the upper or lower edge, the controller is probably too large or the grip is too deep.
Check triggers and bumpers separately

Button mapping

Use the console’s normal controller connection procedure for the model you bought. For the Xbox Nano, open the Xbox Accessories app after the controller is recognized if you want to change button assignments. Button remapping and calibration: what each feature solves
Remapping
Remapping is useful when a player can reach some buttons more easily than others or when a game’s default layout is uncomfortable. - Prioritize trigger reach if racing, shooting or action games keep the index fingers pressed for long periods.
