For most small satellites, the best alternative to Rocket Lab Neutron is SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter when the shared orbit and schedule work. Choose Firefly Alpha or Rocket Lab Electron when you need a dedicated small launcher and more control. Firefly MLV is the closest announced Neutron-class rival, while Blue Origin New Glenn, ULA Vulcan and Relativity Terran R are heavy-lift or development-stage choices that make sense for larger spacecraft, batches or government missions rather than a typical single small satellite.
What Neutron is the benchmark for
Rocket Lab positions Neutron as a reusable medium-lift launcher. Rocket Lab’s 2026 published figures are 13,000 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO) and 1,500 kg to Mars or Venus. The company is developing a dedicated test, launch and landing complex at Wallops Island, Virginia. Those specifications make Neutron a reference point for missions that have outgrown a traditional small launcher but do not need the largest available rocket.

“Alternative” does not necessarily mean another rocket with the same payload rating. A rideshare can be a better answer when price matters more than choosing the exact orbit. A smaller dedicated launcher can be better when a spacecraft must fly on a particular date or reach an unusual inclination. A heavy launcher can be cheaper per spacecraft when a constellation batch fills the available capacity. The right comparison is therefore mission-specific.

| Firefly Alpha | Dedicated or rideshare small-satellite missions | 1,030 kg to 300-km LEO; 630 kg to 500-km sun-synchronous orbit (SSO); Firefly Aerospace, 2026 | More control than a rideshare, subject to the provider’s mission plan | Firefly describes it as operational |
| Rocket Lab Electron | Dedicated small launch and tailored deployment | Comparable payload figures are not stated in the cited material | Dedicated small vehicle; tailored orbit is a principal advantage | NASA calls it the only reusable orbital-class small rocket |
| Firefly MLV | Neutron-class medium lift when it enters service | 16,300 kg to LEO; 3,200 kg to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO); 2,300 kg to trans-lunar injection (TLI); Firefly Aerospace, 2026 | Designed as a dedicated launcher | Announced; Firefly says first flight is scheduled as early as 2026 |
| Blue Origin New Glenn | Large spacecraft, rideshare batches and heavy missions | 45 metric tons to LEO; NASA, 2026 | Heavy-lift mission planning rather than small-payload specialization | Reusable first stage designed for at least 25 flights; assess current flight evidence separately |
| ULA Vulcan | Government and high-assurance missions requiring configuration choice | Zero-, two-, four- or six-solid-booster configurations; NASA description | Mission-specific configuration and launch-site options in Florida and California | Compare on procurement access and mission assurance, not smallsat price alone |
| Relativity Terran R | Future reusable heavy-lift option | Comparable payload figures are not stated in the cited material | Planned dedicated vehicle | Development-stage vehicle on NASA’s Launch Services II contract |
Published payload values are not interchangeable. Orbit altitude, inclination, injection accuracy, fairing volume, mission reserves and any upper-stage or transfer vehicle can change the usable result. Prices and manifest dates remain quote-dependent unless a provider or government source states otherwise.

Falcon 9 Transporter: the price benchmark for a rideshare
NASA describes SpaceX’s Transporter program as offering rides starting at $350,000 for approximately 50 kg and notes its high launch cadence. This is the clearest public price benchmark in the cited material, but it is not a dedicated-launch price. The spacecraft joins a shared mission whose target orbit, inclination, separation sequence and launch date are selected for the overall manifest.
When Transporter is the strongest choice
- Your spacecraft can operate from the rideshare’s injection orbit or can carry enough propulsion to raise or phase its orbit.
- You value a regular stream of missions more than a personally selected launch date.
- The payload is small enough that buying only the needed rideshare mass is more economical than reserving a whole rocket.
- Your integration team can meet the shared provider’s mechanical, electrical, safety and documentation requirements.
Trade-offs to model
A low advertised starting price does not describe total mission cost. Budget separately for payload processing, adapters, testing, export or government compliance, insurance, ground support, optional orbit-transfer hardware and any propulsion needed after separation. A rideshare can also impose a longer wait if your spacecraft misses the integration cutoff or if the shared mission slips.
Transporter is therefore the default answer for a cost-sensitive small satellite with flexible orbit requirements, not an automatic replacement for Neutron when the mission needs dedicated control.
Firefly Alpha: dedicated small launch with responsive-mission positioning
Firefly publishes Alpha performance of 1,030 kg to a 300-km LEO and 630 kg to a 500-km SSO. The company supports both dedicated and rideshare missions and markets rapid-response launch. Firefly also describes Alpha as “the only operational U.S. 1-ton launcher” and says it was the first commercial rocket to launch a satellite to orbit with 24-hour notice. Those are company statements; treat the notice claim as a demonstrated company example rather than a guarantee for every customer.
Why Alpha can beat a cheaper rideshare
A dedicated Alpha mission lets the customer select a mission profile around the spacecraft instead of accepting a rideshare’s primary orbit. That can reduce the amount of onboard propellant needed for orbit raising, simplify constellation phasing and make a time-sensitive demonstration possible. It is also large enough for a substantial single spacecraft or a group of smaller payloads, while remaining closer to small-launch economics than a heavy vehicle.
Questions to ask in an Alpha proposal
- Is the quoted performance for the exact altitude and inclination you require, or for the published reference orbit?
- What launch date, backup date and range-availability assumptions are included?
- Which payload processing, separation-system and mission-assurance tasks are included in the price?
- Can the mission use a dedicated flight, or would a rideshare slot change the schedule and orbit?
Rocket Lab Electron: a dedicated small-rocket alternative
NASA calls Electron “the only reusable orbital-class small rocket.” Electron is the natural alternative when the payload is genuinely small and the customer values a dedicated vehicle, a tailored orbit and an established small-launch operating model over Neutron-class mass capacity.

Electron’s advantage is control, not maximum mass
Electron can be selected when a spacecraft must deploy into a particular inclination, when the launch window is tied to a technology demonstration or when a constellation operator wants to avoid waiting for a compatible primary mission. The practical benefit is mission control: the launch is planned around the customer’s payload rather than around a large collection of unrelated spacecraft.
Where Electron may not be the economical answer
If the spacecraft is small enough to share a rideshare and can tolerate the resulting orbit, a Transporter mission may offer a lower launch charge. If the payload approaches the upper end of the small-launch class, Alpha may provide more margin. Electron should be compared on total delivered mission value—schedule, orbit, integration effort and post-separation requirements—not on an assumed price that is not stated in the cited sources.
Firefly MLV: the closest announced Neutron-class competitor
Firefly and Northrop Grumman publish MLV performance of 16,300 kg to LEO, 3,200 kg to GTO and 2,300 kg to TLI. The design includes first-stage reuse. Firefly says the first flight is scheduled as early as 2026, so MLV should be treated as announced and pre-operational until flight records, customer missions and recurring launch operations establish otherwise.
Who should consider MLV
MLV is relevant to spacecraft that need more capacity than a small dedicated launcher, to constellation batches and to missions whose economics improve when several payloads share a medium-lift vehicle. Its published figures also make it a candidate for missions beyond LEO, although actual performance depends on trajectory, spacecraft separation conditions and reserve requirements.
How to handle development risk
Do not substitute an advertised future capability for an available launch slot. A procurement plan should identify a backup vehicle, define the latest acceptable delivery date and make payment milestones contingent on verifiable program progress. Ask for the current manifest, range plan, qualification status and integration schedule rather than relying only on the announced first-flight target.
New Glenn: heavy lift that can make sense for batches
NASA lists New Glenn at 45 metric tons to LEO and describes a reusable first stage designed for at least 25 flights. That places it well above the mass class most small satellites require. The vehicle can nevertheless be economically sensible when a constellation operator launches many spacecraft together, when a large spacecraft occupies a significant fraction of the fairing or when a mission needs heavy-lift margins.

When New Glenn is oversized
For one small satellite, paying for access to a heavy launcher can add integration complexity and leave the buyer dependent on a primary mission’s schedule. A rideshare or dedicated small rocket generally offers a more direct match. New Glenn becomes more compelling when the alternative is buying several smaller launches, when the payloads must launch together or when the mission’s mass and volume exceed small-launch options.
Reuse claims versus operating evidence
The first-stage flight target is a design goal, not proof of achieved cadence or cost. In a business case, separate the stated reuse objective from demonstrated turnaround, recovered-stage history and available customer manifests.
ULA Vulcan: configuration and procurement can outweigh payload price
NASA describes Vulcan configurations with zero, two, four or six solid boosters and launch sites in Florida and California. That range allows a mission to be matched to payload energy, trajectory and program requirements. Vulcan is not presented in the cited material as a direct smallsat price competitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy government buyers may still shortlist it
Government procurement eligibility, established range relationships, mission-assurance processes and access to a particular launch site can be more important than a nominal per-kilogram figure. A civil or defense buyer should compare Vulcan with alternatives using the full acquisition plan: contract vehicle, security requirements, launch-site geography, schedule confidence, integration responsibilities and orbit insertion performance.
How to compare configurations
Ask the provider to quote the exact booster configuration for the spacecraft’s mass, trajectory and reserve policy. A zero-booster and a six-booster mission are not interchangeable products, even though they share the Vulcan name.
Relativity Terran R: a future option, not current flight heritage
NASA lists Terran R as a two-stage reusable vehicle on the Launch Services II contract. The cited source does not establish operational flight heritage, so it belongs in a development-stage scenario rather than in the same maturity category as an operational rideshare or small-launch service.

Terran R may be worth monitoring for future heavy missions, constellation deployments and customers seeking reusable-launch economics. For a date-critical spacecraft, require a demonstrated flight record or maintain a qualified backup before making Terran R the sole path to orbit.

Orbit delivery does not end at booster separation
The launch vehicle is only one part of the delivery chain. NASA says launch integrators perform compatibility analysis and physical integration. The same NASA material identifies Firefly Elytra as an orbital-transfer-vehicle line and describes Rocket Lab Photon as an orbital-transfer platform derived from Electron’s kick stage.
When an orbital-transfer vehicle changes the decision
- Orbit raising: The spacecraft can be deployed to a rideshare orbit and then moved to its operational altitude.
- Phasing: A transfer vehicle can release spacecraft at carefully timed points for constellation spacing.
- Inclination or plane changes: Additional propulsion may reduce the burden on the satellite’s own limited fuel supply.
- Precise deployment: The transfer stage can sequence several payload releases after the primary launch vehicle reaches its insertion orbit.
Compare the complete delivered service: launch, adapter, separation, transfer-stage operations, tracking, command authority, licensing and end-of-life disposal. A low rideshare price can lose its advantage if the spacecraft must add substantial propulsion or if a separate transfer service is required.
A practical selection framework
1. Define the orbit before choosing the rocket
Write down altitude, inclination, local time of descending node if the mission uses SSO, eccentricity, injection accuracy, deployment sequence and acceptable drift. “LEO” is not one destination. Two missions with the same altitude can have very different launch-energy and scheduling requirements.
2. Classify the payload and growth margin
Use the fully fueled launch mass, dispenser hardware, separation system, late design margin and any protective hardware. Classify the mission as a small dedicated launch, a Neutron-class medium-lift mission or a heavy-lift mission. Do not select a vehicle from dry spacecraft mass alone.

3. Decide how much schedule control you need
- Flexible date and orbit: Start with Falcon 9 Transporter.
- Specific orbit or responsive demonstration: Evaluate Alpha and Electron.
- Large batch or heavy spacecraft: Compare MLV, New Glenn and, where procurement requirements support it, Vulcan.
- Future-oriented procurement: Keep Terran R and MLV in a monitored pipeline with an operational fallback.
4. Price the whole mission
Request a quote that separates launch service, payload processing, adapter or dispenser, range costs, insurance, testing, integration labor, export or security compliance, transfer-stage operations and any post-launch support. Public figures are useful benchmarks, not complete mission prices.
Best Value
5. Verify maturity and availability
Ask for recent flight history, current customer manifests, launch-site assignment, licensing status, qualification milestones and backup dates. Treat announced first flights and reuse designs as forecasts until operational evidence exists.
6. Check geography and procurement access
Launch-site location affects transport, hazardous-processing logistics, range windows and regulatory work. U.S. government customers should also confirm eligibility under the relevant contract vehicle and security rules. A vehicle that looks ideal technically may be unusable if the buyer cannot access its procurement channel or launch site.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
Choosing by payload number alone
A rocket’s maximum LEO figure does not tell you whether it can deliver your spacecraft to the required inclination, altitude or deployment sequence. Require a mission-specific performance analysis.

Comparing a rideshare price with a dedicated-launch price
The Transporter benchmark is for approximately 50 kg on a shared mission. A dedicated launcher buys control and responsibility for the mission profile. Compare total delivered cost and schedule risk, not just the headline launch charge.
Assuming a published capacity is available on every date
Performance is constrained by trajectory, reserves, range availability, payload processing and the provider’s manifest. Ask for a launch-window-specific commitment.
Treating future vehicles as operational substitutes
MLV and Terran R require explicit development-risk treatment. Keep a backup launch path and define decision gates tied to qualification, flight success and manifest availability.
Ignoring post-separation propulsion
If the launch vehicle cannot provide the final orbit, calculate the mass, power, fuel and operational time required for an orbital-transfer vehicle or the spacecraft’s own propulsion system. Include disposal and collision-avoidance obligations in that analysis.
Which alternative fits each mission?
| Mission situation | First option to evaluate | Reason | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small satellite, flexible orbit, lowest public benchmark | Falcon 9 Transporter | Shared launch economics and high cadence | Confirm the rideshare injection orbit and all integration charges |
| Dedicated small satellite with a specific orbit | Electron | Dedicated small-vehicle control | Obtain a current quote and mission-specific performance analysis |
| Responsive or dedicated mission around the one-ton class | Firefly Alpha | Published small-launch performance and dedicated or rideshare options | Verify schedule, notice period and exact orbit |
| Medium-lift spacecraft or constellation batch | Firefly MLV | Published capacity above Neutron’s benchmark | Treat it as announced until flight and cadence evidence are available |
| Very large spacecraft or many satellites at once | New Glenn | Heavy-lift capacity and reusable-first-stage design | Check whether the mission is large enough to justify heavy-launch integration |
| Government mission with configuration and procurement constraints | ULA Vulcan | Booster choices, Florida and California launch sites, and procurement considerations | Compare assurance, contract access and trajectory-specific configuration |
| Future reusable heavy-lift procurement | Terran R | Development-stage option on NASA’s Launch Services II contract | Require a demonstrated operational fallback |
Bottom line for a Neutron alternative
Start with the mission, not the rocket. Falcon 9 Transporter is the strongest public cost benchmark when a shared orbit works. Alpha and Electron are the practical dedicated small-launch alternatives when orbit or schedule control matters. MLV is the closest announced vehicle in Neutron’s medium-lift neighborhood, but it should remain a future option until it demonstrates flight operations. New Glenn and Vulcan are better evaluated for heavy, government or batch missions, while Terran R remains developmental. In every case, include integration and orbital-transfer services in the same decision instead of comparing booster payload figures in isolation.
