Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Its lid protects the screen in a pocket, and Anbernic lists a 3300 mAh battery, advertised eight-hour runtime and TF-card expansion up to 512 GB. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. If minimum weight matters more than a clamshell, the Miyoo Mini Plus is the clearest vertical alternative: a 2026 comparison lists it at 162 g, the lightest of the four devices compared.
There is no single best small handheld for every player. Your choice depends on whether you want a closing lid or an always-exposed screen, how much shoulder-button and analog-stick control you need, the display size you can tolerate, and whether you intend to play systems beyond the Game Boy family.

What “playing Game Boy games” means on these handhelds
The devices in this guide are small emulation handhelds. They run software that reproduces the behavior of Game Boy, Game Boy Color (GBC) and Game Boy Advance (GBA) hardware. The evidence here does not establish compatibility with original cartridges, and none of the products is described as a cartridge reader.
You still need game files. Use files you are legally entitled to use, such as personal backups where local law permits, and check the law in your country before downloading or sharing ROMs. A listing that says a system “supports” GB, GBC or GBA describes the emulator or system formats it can run; it does not grant rights to copyrighted games. This article does not assess the copyright status of any preloaded files or provide sources for obtaining them.

Quick shortlist
- Anbernic RG35XXSP: the most directly evidenced fit for a pocketable Game Boy-focused clamshell. Anbernic names GB, GBC and GBA support, a magnetic-closing lid with Hall-switch wake/sleep, a 3300 mAh battery and up to 512 GB TF expansion on its official product page.
- Miyoo Mini Plus: the lightweight vertical choice. Handheld Index lists 162 g in its 2026 comparison, making it the lightest of the RG35XX Plus, RG35XX SP, Miyoo Mini Plus and TrimUI Smart Pro in that comparison. Its screen remains exposed rather than protected by a lid.
- Anbernic RG SP: a related current clamshell model with a documented 3.4-inch, 720 × 480 IPS display, H700 quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, 1 GB RAM and 16 GB TF/MicroSD storage. The available evidence does not establish that it performs better than the RG35XXSP.
- Anbernic RG34XXSP, RG40XXV and TrimUI Brick: alternatives named by Android Central. They become more relevant if you want a different screen size or control layout, but the material available here does not provide a complete, like-for-like specification set or current prices for them.

Anbernic RG35XXSP: the strongest compact clamshell fit
The RG35XXSP is the most straightforward recommendation when your priority is a small device that closes like a classic portable. Anbernic’s official listing explicitly names GB, GBC and GBA formats, so it directly matches the three Game Boy generations most readers mean by “Game Boy games.” The lid shields the display from keys and dust in a bag, and the listed magnetic closure plus Hall-switch wake/sleep behavior makes opening and closing part of the normal carrying experience.
Anbernic lists a 3300 mAh battery and says it can last eight hours. Treat “eight hours” as an advertised figure: runtime varies with screen brightness, speaker volume, emulator, wireless activity if enabled, sleep behavior and battery age. It is not a result from an independent standardized test.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe same listing says TF-card expansion can reach 512 GB. That is useful if you keep legally obtained backups for several systems, but expansion is optional for a focused GB/GBC library. The supplied information does not state the capacity of the card included in every package, so check the seller’s bundle description rather than assuming a particular card is present.
Control trade-offs
A 2026 review by RetroHandheldHQ reports that the RG35XXSP has no analog sticks. That is generally unimportant for Game Boy and GBC software, whose original controls are digital, but it matters if you expect to play games designed around analog movement or camera control. The review also reports battery drain while the stock software is asleep and describes software workarounds. Those are the reviewer’s findings, not measurements performed for this article; if sleep reliability is critical, test the behavior on your exact firmware and use a full shutdown when storing the device for long periods.
Who should choose it
- Choose it when a protected screen and pocket-friendly clamshell are more important than an analog stick.
- Choose it when explicit manufacturer support for GB, GBC and GBA is valuable to you.
- Look elsewhere if you need a very low weight, a larger display, or verified analog controls for 3D systems.
Read the RG35XXSP product listing for the manufacturer’s supported-format, battery and storage claims, and consult the 2026 RetroHandheldHQ review for the reported sleep-drain and no-analog-stick caveats.
Miyoo Mini Plus: the lightest documented option
The Miyoo Mini Plus is the most useful alternative when carrying weight is your first filter and you prefer a vertical slab. Handheld Index’s April 2026 comparison gives it a 162 g weight and identifies it as the lightest among the four models compared: RG35XX Plus, RG35XX SP, Miyoo Mini Plus and TrimUI Smart Pro. That figure is tied to that comparison; confirm the weight of the exact revision and package you are considering.

Its vertical design is familiar to anyone who grew up with a classic Game Boy, but the screen is exposed when the device is in a pocket. A case or separate screen protector may therefore matter more than it would with a clamshell. The supplied sources do not establish a complete display specification, included storage capacity, battery claim or analog-stick layout for the Miyoo Mini Plus, so those should be checked on the current listing before purchase.
Pick the Miyoo Mini Plus when a lighter carry is worth giving up the RG35XXSP’s closing lid. Do not select it solely because a historical deal article showed a particular price: Android Central’s links and deal prices are retail context from the time of publication, not a current price guarantee.
For the dated weight comparison, see Handheld Index’s 2026 comparison. For additional retail context and named alternatives, see Android Central’s roundup, while treating its prices as historical.
Anbernic RG SP: a related clamshell with a documented screen and platform
The RG SP is worth considering if you want a current clamshell model and care about display and core specifications that are explicitly published. Anbernic lists a 3.4-inch IPS panel at 720 × 480, an H700 quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of TF/MicroSD storage on its official page.
Those figures describe the hardware; they do not prove a better Game Boy experience than the RG35XXSP. The cited information does not provide a controlled performance comparison, battery capacity, weight or a complete supported-system list for the RG SP. For two devices that appear similar in purpose, compare the exact shell, hinge, buttons, firmware, included card and seller rather than assuming the newer specification wins in every use.
The official specification page is Anbernic’s RG SP listing. Verify that the storage figure and package contents match the regional listing you plan to buy.
Other small alternatives named in current coverage
Android Central’s roundup also names the Anbernic RG34XXSP, Anbernic RG40XXV and TrimUI Brick. They can make sense if your real requirement is a different screen size, orientation or control arrangement rather than the smallest possible Game Boy machine. However, the available evidence does not establish their current weights, display resolutions, storage bundles, battery capacities or complete Game Boy-family compatibility in a comparable format.

Use those names as a starting point for checking current model pages, not as a ranking. Retail prices, sellers, stock and package contents change, and Android Central’s deal links are historical. If a listing does not clearly identify the model revision and included card, ask the seller or choose a listing with a complete specification sheet.

How to choose by the way you will play
For Pokémon, Zelda and other digital-control games
Game Boy, GBC and most GBA games use a directional pad and buttons rather than analog sticks. A comfortable D-pad, reliable face buttons and reachable shoulder buttons therefore matter more than 3D controls. The RG35XXSP’s lack of analog sticks, reported by RetroHandheldHQ, is not automatically a disadvantage for this library.
For the smallest protected package
Choose a clamshell. Closing the RG35XXSP or another clamshell model prevents the display from facing keys, coins and other objects in a pocket. The trade-off is a hinge and a shape that may be slightly thicker than a simple vertical slab.
For minimum carry weight
The Miyoo Mini Plus has the clearest documented advantage in the supplied evidence at 162 g. Because the comparison covers only four devices and revisions can differ, treat that as a comparison result, not a universal claim about every unit sold.
For a larger or sharper display
The RG SP is the only model here with a cited display specification: 3.4 inches, 720 × 480 IPS. Do not infer that its image is preferable until you compare scaling, aspect-ratio options and the emulator’s integer-scaling settings on the exact firmware.
Recommended Free Tools
For several retro systems
The RG35XXSP listing names GB, GBC and GBA plus other systems, but the supplied evidence does not establish how well it runs every system outside that family. If your library extends into more demanding 3D consoles, prioritize independent tests for those specific systems instead of relying on a broad “supports” list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Display size, aspect ratio and integer scaling
Original Game Boy-family games use different native resolutions and aspect ratios from modern widescreen panels. An emulator can display the original proportions, enlarge the image to fill more of the screen, or use integer scaling that keeps pixels evenly sized. Filling the screen can introduce uneven scaling or cropping; preserving the original aspect ratio can leave borders.

Small screens make a clean scaling mode especially important. When comparing a device in person, check whether text in a Pokémon menu is legible at your normal brightness, whether the D-pad feels accurate during diagonal movement, and whether the shoulder buttons are reachable without changing grip. A published diagonal measurement alone cannot answer those comfort questions.
Storage and game-file preparation
The RG35XXSP’s documented TF expansion up to 512 GB gives you room for a large legally obtained library, while the RG SP page lists 16 GB of TF/MicroSD storage. Storage capacity is not the same as included usable space: operating-system files, emulator folders and bundled content consume part of a card, and some sellers ship different cards with the same model name.
- Confirm the exact model revision, card capacity and included accessories on the seller’s listing.
- Before changing files, make a backup of the card’s original folders on a computer.
- Use the device’s documented folder structure or the instructions supplied with its firmware. Do not rename system folders at random; a misplaced file can make a game disappear from the menu.
- Copy only game files you are legally entitled to use, then eject the card safely before putting it back in the handheld.
- Launch one title from each format you intend to play and check controls, save states and sleep/wake behavior before loading the card with a larger library.
An optional replacement or expansion card can be useful, but it is not automatically necessary. Confirm model-specific capacity limits and whether the device expects a particular file system before buying one.
Battery expectations and sleep behavior
The RG35XXSP’s 3300 mAh capacity and advertised eight-hour duration come from Anbernic. Screen brightness, volume, emulator load and battery condition change real runtime, so plan around your own usage rather than treating eight hours as a guaranteed session length.
RetroHandheldHQ reports that stock sleep can drain the RG35XXSP’s battery and discusses software workarounds. If you put the handheld away for days, verify that it actually enters the intended low-power state or shut it down fully. A device that appears asleep but loses substantial charge can be mistaken for a defective battery when the issue is firmware behavior.
No comparable battery figure is established here for the Miyoo Mini Plus, RG SP, RG34XXSP, RG40XXV or TrimUI Brick. Do not use the RG35XXSP’s advertised runtime as a proxy for those models.

No current, verified price is established in the available evidence. Android Central’s deal prices and Amazon links are historical retail context, and the manufacturer pages can change model variants, stock and bundles. Check the total delivered cost, return policy, seller identity and warranty terms at checkout.
- Match the model name and shell design in the photos to the specification page; similar names can refer to different revisions.
- Confirm whether a TF/MicroSD card, case, charger and screen protector are included.
- Check the seller’s stated region, shipping time and return process.
- Read recent buyer reports for card errors, hinge damage or battery complaints, but separate anecdotal reports from measured testing.
- After delivery, verify the advertised ports, buttons, screen and charging behavior during the return window.
Bottom-line recommendations
Start with the RG35XXSP if you want the clearest documented match for GB, GBC and GBA emulation in a protected clamshell. Its 3300 mAh battery, advertised eight-hour runtime and up-to-512-GB TF expansion are manufacturer claims, while the reported sleep drain and lack of analog sticks are caveats from an independent 2026 review.
Choose the Miyoo Mini Plus when 162 g and a traditional vertical shape matter more than a closing lid, remembering that the supplied evidence does not provide a full current specification or price. Consider the RG SP when its documented 3.4-inch 720 × 480 display, H700 processor, 1 GB RAM and 16 GB storage match your priorities, but do not assume those numbers prove superior Game Boy performance. Treat the RG34XXSP, RG40XXV and TrimUI Brick as additional models to investigate when you need a different size or control layout, not as automatically better choices.
