These steps improve data capture, but consumer wearables still estimate sleep stages; polysomnography (PSG) remains the clinical reference for staging.
Start with the settings that prevent bad data
Most disappointing deep-sleep readings come from missing or noisy signals rather than from a single faulty night. Before comparing algorithms, make sure the tracker records the whole sleep period.

1. Enable the dedicated sleep mode and schedule
Use the device’s sleep feature instead of relying only on general activity tracking. On Apple Watch, enable Track Sleep with Apple Watch, set a bedtime and wake time, and use Sleep Focus. The Health app then presents Awake, REM, Core and Deep stages. Other brands use different names, but the principle is the same: define the expected sleep window so the algorithm knows when to collect and classify data.
2. Wear it for the entire night
Apple states that at least one hour of overnight wear is required for sleep data and warns that no result may appear when the watch is not worn. A shorter period can also remove the first or last sleep cycles, which are important when you are trying to understand deep sleep. Put the device on before you get into bed and leave it on until you are up.

3. Charge before bedtime
A dead battery creates a gap that no algorithm can reconstruct. Apple recommends charging reminders and explicitly notes that a watch with no power will not track sleep. If your routine makes a full charge difficult, charge while you get ready for bed, immediately after waking, or during another predictable period; do not remove the device during the night just to protect battery life.
4. Use a secure, comfortable fit
The sensor must stay in stable contact with your skin without being painfully tight. Apple warns that a loose watch can let its accelerometer register too much movement during natural sleep. Garmin likewise says that motion and device position can affect accuracy. Tighten the band enough that the watch does not rotate when you turn over, but leave enough room for normal circulation.
5. Keep placement consistent
Wear the same device on the same wrist or finger and use the same orientation each night. This is a practical way to reduce changes caused by fit, skin contact and sensor position when you compare trends. It does not make the resulting stage labels clinical measurements; it makes your personal baseline more stable.
What “accurate” deep sleep actually means
Sleep trackers solve two different problems. First, they estimate whether you are asleep or awake. Second, they classify sleep into stages such as light, deep and REM. The first task is substantially easier because movement and cardiovascular signals usually distinguish quiet sleep from obvious wakefulness. Stage classification requires the device to infer brain-state changes from indirect signals at the wrist or finger.
PSG, used in a sleep laboratory, measures brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing and heart signals together. Its measurements define clinical sleep stages. A consumer tracker generally combines movement with optical heart-rate data and, depending on the model, skin temperature, heart-rate variability (HRV) and respiratory rate. The result is useful for patterns, but a deep-sleep minute on a watch is not equivalent to a PSG-scored deep-sleep minute.
What independent testing shows
A 2024 study in Sensors by Rebecca Robbins and colleagues compared Oura Ring Gen3, Fitbit Sense 2 and Apple Watch Series 8 with PSG in 35 healthy adults. All three devices achieved at least 95% sensitivity for sleep versus wake in that sample. Stage sensitivity was lower and varied by device and stage.
| Device | Stage sensitivity | Stage precision | Deep-sleep result versus PSG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring Gen3 | 76.0%–79.5% | 77.0%–79.5% | Not statistically different from PSG for wake, light, deep or REM in this sample |
| Fitbit Sense 2 | 61.7%–78.0% | 72.8%–73.2% | Underestimated deep sleep by 15 minutes on average in the study |
| Apple Watch Series 8 | 50.5%–86.1% | 72.7%–87.8% | Underestimated deep sleep by 43 minutes and overestimated light sleep by 45 minutes in the study |
Those figures describe one-night inpatient recordings from a small, healthy sample. They are not guarantees for every wearer, software release, device generation or sleep condition. The study does, however, show why a tracker can detect that you slept while still disagreeing with PSG about how much of that sleep was deep.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn practical terms, sensitivity indicates how often a device detects a stage when PSG says that stage occurred, while precision indicates how often the device’s stage label is correct when it makes that label. Neither number tells you that every reported minute is exact. A device can have strong sleep-versus-wake performance and still confuse deep, light and REM periods.
Oura’s 2026 support documentation reports 79% agreement with PSG for its staging algorithm. It says the algorithm uses movement, skin temperature, resting heart rate, HRV and respiratory rate. Agreement is a useful summary, but it is not the same as perfect stage-by-stage accuracy and should be read alongside independent testing.
How the algorithms infer stages
During sleep, movement usually falls, heart rate changes, HRV patterns shift, breathing varies and peripheral temperature can change. Algorithms combine those signals in short time windows, compare them with learned patterns and assign a probable stage. A restless interval may be labeled light sleep or wake; a period of stillness with a particular cardiovascular pattern may be labeled deep sleep.
Because the signals overlap between stages, the same person can receive different labels from different devices. An algorithm update can also change historical-looking patterns without any change in your behavior. Treat a stage chart as the output of a model, not a direct recording of brain activity.

Device-specific setup and limitations
Apple Watch
In the Watch or Health sleep settings, turn on Track Sleep with Apple Watch, create a sleep schedule, and enable Sleep Focus if you want fewer interruptions. Confirm that the watch is worn for at least an hour and has enough charge for the full night. The Health app displays Awake, REM, Core and Deep categories. If a night is blank, check wear time and battery before assuming a software problem.
Oura Ring
Oura’s staging model uses movement, skin temperature, resting heart rate, HRV and respiratory rate. The ring’s finger placement can provide a stable signal for some users, but comfort, rotation and incomplete charging still matter. Oura’s 79% PSG-agreement figure comes from its own 2026 support documentation; the independent 2024 comparison found no statistically significant difference from PSG for the measured sleep stages in its sample.
Fitbit
Fitbit Sense 2 showed at least 95% sleep-versus-wake sensitivity in the cited comparison, while stage sensitivity ranged from 61.7% to 78.0%. It underestimated deep sleep by 15 minutes in that study. Use the same fit and nightly routine when following trends, and do not treat that study average as a correction factor for your own results.
Garmin and other activity watches
Garmin states that motion and device position can affect accuracy and that its activity metrics have inherent limitations. It also says those metrics are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. The same caution applies broadly: a consumer sleep feature can support personal observation but is not a diagnostic test.

Why one night can look wrong
Night-to-night variation is not automatically a device failure. A late bedtime, illness, alcohol, unusual exercise, travel, shift work or repeated awakenings can change both your physiology and the signals available to the algorithm. A brief removal to charge, a loose band or a ring that rotates can create a different kind of error by degrading the input itself. Record these circumstances next to the chart so you can distinguish a real routine change from a compromised recording.
Also check the scale of the display. A tracker may round stage blocks, revise the night after synchronization or assign a long quiet period to one stage even when PSG would divide it differently. Look at total sleep time, awakenings and bedtime alongside deep-sleep minutes. A sudden deep-sleep change with no corresponding change in total sleep, awakenings or how you felt is a reason to inspect fit, battery and software version before drawing a physiological conclusion.
Fix the most common “wrong deep sleep” readings
The tracker shows no sleep data
- Check that the device was actually worn and that the strap or ring did not come off.
- Verify that the battery did not reach zero overnight.
- Confirm that sleep tracking is enabled and that the schedule covers the night.
- Sync after waking; some apps do not display final stages until synchronization completes.
Deep sleep is implausibly low
- Inspect the fit for looseness, rotation or gaps between sensor and skin.
- Check for long periods when the device was removed, charging or blocked by clothing.
- Look for an unusually fragmented night before blaming the algorithm.
- Compare a rolling multi-night pattern rather than one short night.
Deep sleep is implausibly high
- Consider whether the device mistook still wakefulness for sleep.
- Review whether the bedtime and wake-time schedule is accurate.
- Check for a recent firmware or app change that may have altered classification.
- Compare the stage chart with awakenings you remember and with total sleep time.
Readings change after switching devices
Do not merge numbers from different sensors into one continuous baseline. Keep the new device in the same place for at least several nights, record the changeover date, and compare broad patterns such as bedtime consistency, total sleep and frequent awakenings. A difference in deep-sleep minutes may reflect algorithm or placement differences rather than a physiological change.
A practical protocol for dependable personal trends
- Choose one device. Select the tracker you can wear comfortably every night and keep it in one position.
- Standardize the setup. Use the scheduled sleep mode, Sleep Focus or equivalent, and the same bedtime and wake-time window.
- Protect battery coverage. Start each night with enough charge to avoid an overnight shutdown.
- Check fit before sleep. The sensor should remain in contact without pinching, sliding or rotating.
- Log confounders. Note illness, alcohol, unusual exercise, travel, shift work, medication changes and nights with repeated awakenings.
- Review several nights together. Look for direction and consistency instead of reacting to one deep-sleep value.
- Validate against how you feel. Persistent daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses or repeated unrefreshing sleep deserve attention even when a tracker reports a normal-looking chart.
How to compare sleep trackers responsibly
If you are deciding between a sleep-tracking ring, Apple Watch or another wearable, compare evidence and operating constraints rather than marketing percentages alone.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Validation | Was the device compared with PSG? How many participants? One night or multiple nights? | A PSG comparison reveals how the device behaves against the clinical reference. |
| Stage performance | Are sensitivity, precision or agreement reported separately for deep sleep, REM and light sleep? | An overall score can hide weak performance for the stage you care about. |
| Signal inputs | Does it use movement, optical heart rate, HRV, temperature and respiratory rate? | More inputs can help classification, but they do not guarantee correct labels. |
| Nightly reliability | How long does the battery last, how is it charged, and what happens when power runs out? | Missing hours reduce the usefulness of every stage estimate. |
| Fit and comfort | Will the sensor stay in place without causing pressure or frequent removal? | Stable contact reduces motion artifacts and improves continuity. |
| Clinical boundaries | Does the maker clearly state that consumer estimates do not diagnose sleep disorders? | Transparent limitations help prevent medical overinterpretation. |
Apple Watch or Oura for deep sleep?
There is no universal winner established by the available comparisons. In the 35-person 2024 PSG study, Oura Ring Gen3 was not statistically different from PSG for wake, light, deep or REM estimates, while Apple Watch Series 8 underestimated deep sleep by 43 minutes and overestimated light sleep by 45 minutes in that sample. Oura’s own 2026 documentation reports 79% agreement with PSG. Those findings make Oura a reasonable option to investigate if stage tracking is your priority, but they do not guarantee that it will be more accurate for every person, generation or software version.
For an Apple user, the Watch may still be the more practical choice if it is the device you will wear consistently and keep charged. Complete nightly coverage can matter more to your personal trend than a difference reported in a single laboratory comparison. Compare validated stage results, battery routine, comfort and fit rather than choosing from one headline percentage.

The most useful way to interpret deep-sleep charts
Use deep-sleep data to identify repeatable changes after you alter a routine, such as keeping a regular schedule or avoiding a specific late-night disruption. Keep the device, placement and settings constant while you observe the change. Do not set a target number of deep-sleep minutes from another person or another brand, because stage distributions vary and the cited devices can systematically over- or underestimate stages.
The best setting is therefore not a hidden sensitivity switch. It is complete overnight coverage, stable sensor contact, a consistent schedule and enough nights to separate a pattern from noise. For questions about a possible sleep disorder, move from consumer tracking to clinical assessment rather than trying to calibrate a watch or ring into a laboratory instrument.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I measure deep sleep more accurately at home?
Enable the device’s dedicated sleep mode and schedule, wear it for the full night, keep the sensor securely against your skin and begin with enough battery for the entire sleep period. Use the same device and placement over multiple nights. These steps improve signal quality and continuity, but they cannot make a consumer tracker equivalent to PSG.
Why does my watch show the wrong amount of deep sleep?
The watch may have missed data because it was loose, removed, charging or out of battery. Even with perfect coverage, stage classification is an estimate based on indirect signals. Quiet wakefulness can be labeled sleep, and light or REM periods can be labeled deep. Check fit, battery, schedule and recent software changes before interpreting the number.
Is Apple Watch or Oura more accurate for deep sleep?
A 2024 PSG comparison of 35 healthy adults found Oura Ring Gen3 was not statistically different from PSG for the measured stages, while Apple Watch Series 8 underestimated deep sleep by 43 minutes in that sample. Oura’s 2026 documentation reports 79% agreement with PSG. These results are not guarantees; comfort, coverage, device generation and software can change your experience.
How accurate are sleep stages on a smartwatch?
Sleep-versus-wake detection is generally stronger than stage detection. In the cited 2024 comparison, all tested devices had at least 95% sleep-versus-wake sensitivity, but stage sensitivity ranged from 50.5% to 86.1% depending on device and stage. Treat stage minutes as trend estimates, not clinical measurements.
How many nights should I use before judging a trend?
Review several consecutive nights with the same device, fit and schedule rather than reacting to one result. Log illness, alcohol, travel, unusual exercise, medication changes and repeated awakenings because they can alter both sleep and the signals available to the algorithm. The longer your consistent baseline, the easier it is to separate a pattern from a recording problem.
Should I use a deep-sleep target from another person or brand?
No universal target is established by these comparisons. Stage distributions vary between people, and devices can systematically overestimate or underestimate a stage. Use your own repeated baseline and changes in total sleep, awakenings and daytime functioning instead of copying another tracker’s number.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a sleep tracker diagnose sleep apnea or another disorder?
No. Consumer sleep features are not diagnostic tests. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine supports actigraphy for defined clinical uses, while PSG remains the reference for staging. Seek clinical evaluation for persistent daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, unusual movements or repeated unrefreshing sleep, even if the app looks normal.
What should I do after switching from a watch to a ring?
Record the changeover date and do not merge the two devices into one baseline. Wear the new device in a consistent position for several nights, then compare broad patterns such as bedtime, total sleep and awakenings. A difference in deep-sleep minutes may reflect sensor placement or algorithm behavior rather than a sudden physiological change.
The Bottom Line
For the cleanest deep-sleep trend, schedule sleep tracking, wear the device continuously with a stable fit, charge it before bed and keep the setup consistent. Consumer devices detect sleep versus wake better than they classify deep sleep, so use multi-night patterns and PSG-backed validation—not a single stage score—to guide decisions. Persistent symptoms warrant clinical assessment.
