The most useful preparation for a robbery or threatening street encounter is knowing how to avoid escalating it: choose a safer route, stay aware, spot when a situation is worsening, and look for a way to leave. If someone threatens violence, prioritize your safety over your belongings. A charged phone, a personal safety alarm, and a small crossbody bag can be practical options, but none prevents robbery or guarantees help.
This guide uses UK police advice. “Bandit” is not a defined term in that guidance; the practical advice here is about street robbery and other threatening encounters. Emergency numbers and legal rules vary by location.

- Stay aware: Keep your phone and other valuables out of sight when you are not using them. If you use your phone, remain aware of what is happening around you. Metropolitan Police guidance.
- Notice escalation: Trust your instincts. If a situation is worsening, avoid getting involved and look for a way to leave.

What should you do if someone threatens you?
If you are in danger or threatened with violence, do not risk your safety for possessions. The Police Service of Northern Ireland puts it plainly: “If you feel that you are in danger, or you are threatened with violence, then let your valuables go. - Look for a safe way to leave and put distance between yourself and the other person.
- If you can, call 999. If calling is not possible during the incident, call as soon as you can afterward. The number and response process may differ outside the UK.
- If you are in a building with security personnel, alert them promptly when it is safe.
