Choose Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 if you want a current arcade-style game with a substantial built-in park editor, sharing, browsing and ratings. Choose Skater XL if community-made maps and physics-driven skating are your main priorities. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remains a useful older alternative with an officially documented editor, park browser and remix option, although its sharing documentation dates from 2020 and should be checked against the edition and platform you use.
These games do not offer the same kind of customization. A built-in editor lets you construct and publish a park inside the game; a mod-oriented game can make community maps the central attraction, sometimes through an external ecosystem. The distinction matters more than a simple “best game” ranking.

Quick verdict
| Game | Best fit | Creation and community features | Style and setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 | Players who want a current arcade game and a full in-game park builder | Create-A-Park includes obstacles, dynamic content, custom goals, editable smart pieces, themes, sharing, play and ratings for other parks | Arcade skating; announced for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and PC |
| Skater XL | Players whose priority is community-created maps | Community maps, a modding hub and maps that were developed with community artists | Physics-based Independent Foot Control System; the PC listing requires a compatible controller and has no keyboard controls |
| Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 | Players who want an earlier Tony Hawk editor with remix support | Official editor, publishing, browsing, upvotes, favorites and creator-enabled remixes | Arcade skating; online-service status should be confirmed because the support instructions are dated September 3, 2020 |
This is a feature-fit recommendation, not a controlled test of physics, frame rate, moderation or overall fun. The available publisher, developer and store material documents tools and platform statements but does not establish an objective gameplay winner.

Custom parks and community maps are different
What a built-in park editor does
An in-game editor gives you a set of approved pieces and rules. You arrange ramps, rails and scenery, adjust the available elements, add goals where supported, then save or publish the result through the game’s own services. The advantage is consistency: other players can usually load the park without installing a separate tool or finding files elsewhere. The limitation is that you work within the game’s object library and technical boundaries.

What a community-map ecosystem does
A community-map system emphasizes locations made by players or independent artists rather than only parks shipped by the developer. It may include a browser, an in-game modding hub, downloadable packages or a mixture of those approaches. The range can be much wider than a fixed editor, but availability depends on platform support, service health, compatibility and the people maintaining each map.
For that reason, “custom parks” is the better search term for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, while “community-made maps” is the stronger description of Skater XL. Some overlap exists: a game can let you build your own park and also let you browse other players’ work.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4: strongest built-in creation and sharing package
Why it leads this list
Activision describes Create-A-Park as a skating sandbox rather than a small side editor. The documented feature set includes dozens of obstacles, dynamic content, custom goals, editable smart pieces and themes based on career parks. You can share a finished park, play other players’ parks and rate them. That combination makes it the clearest choice when you want to design, publish and discover parks without relying on a separate mod workflow.

The publisher’s feature description names ramps, quarter pipes, pools, rails, decorations, props and landmarks. It also lists non-player characters and boost pads, so a park can include more than static skating geometry. Editable smart pieces provide additional adjustment beyond simply dropping a standard object into place. Themes modeled on career parks let you set a recognizable visual direction before you start arranging pieces.
Dynamic content and custom goals are particularly important for replayability. A park can be designed around an objective or a changing event instead of functioning only as an empty sandbox. The available material does not specify every goal type, object limit or rule-setting option, so those details should be checked in the current game build rather than assumed.

Published park count
Activision’s 2025 launch announcement reports 19 parks in the game, combining remakes and new settings. That is a publisher-reported count, not an independently audited statistic, and it describes the shipped game at the time of the announcement. It should not be read as the number of user-created parks available through the sharing service.
Platforms and storefronts
The 2025 announcement lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The launch article identifies Battle.net, Steam and the Microsoft PC Store as PC storefronts. Storefront access, edition names, cross-generation entitlements and online requirements can change by region, so confirm the listing for your account and platform before buying.

- Open the game’s Create-A-Park mode rather than a standard career or free-skate session.
- Choose a theme or starting presentation that matches the kind of location you want to make.
- Place the core skating lines first: ramps, quarter pipes, pools and rails. Add decorations, props and landmarks after the routes work.
- Use editable smart pieces where you need finer adjustments, then add dynamic content, non-player characters or boost pads if they serve the layout.
- Create custom goals that give visitors a reason to learn the park instead of simply passing through it.
- Save and publish the park through the game’s sharing tools. Once published, use the park browser to play other creations and rate them.
The exact menu wording and any account or network requirement can vary with updates and platform. The steps above follow the publisher’s documented feature flow, not an independently tested button-by-button walkthrough.
Who should choose it
- Choose it when you want a self-contained editor with a broad object catalogue and built-in discovery.
- Choose it when arcade controls and the Tony Hawk format matter more than realistic foot-by-foot physics.
- Choose it when ratings and a straightforward publish-and-play loop are more important than downloading a large external mod library.
Skater XL: the clearest choice for community-created maps
Community content is central to the appeal
The Steam listing highlights community-created maps and a modding hub, with locations including Grant Park, Hüdland and Streets. A 2020 developer announcement says those three community-created maps were included in the 1.0 release and that their artists worked alongside the studio on improvements. That history demonstrates meaningful community involvement, but it does not guarantee that every external map, download method or service remains available today.
Physics-based foot controls
Skater XL uses an Independent Foot Control System in which each thumbstick controls the corresponding foot. This is a different design goal from the trick-focused arcade structure of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. You are choosing the game for its physical control model and map ecosystem, not for a built-in Create-A-Park feature documented in the same way as the Tony Hawk titles.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
PC controller requirement
The PC Steam listing states that a compatible Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 controller is required and that keyboard controls are not available. Connect and test the controller before assuming the game will be playable on a keyboard-and-mouse setup. Compatibility can change with operating-system, driver or storefront updates, so verify the current listing if you are buying for PC.
What the community-map workflow involves
- Confirm that your platform supports the map or mod service you intend to use; PC support and console support should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Check the current game listing or in-game modding hub for the map’s name, version and any stated dependencies.
- Install or enable the map using the method supported by your edition. Avoid mixing instructions for different platforms.
- Launch the map and test its lines, collision points and load behavior before treating it as a dependable part of your library.
- Keep a note of the map creator and version so you can identify updates or remove a broken package later.
The first three named maps—Streets, Hüdland Training Facility and Grant Park—are documented as part of the 1.0-era community history. Their inclusion does not prove that every map shown in older videos or forum posts is still downloadable, maintained or supported on your current platform.
Who should choose it
- Choose it when discovering locations made by a wider skating community is the main reason you are buying.
- Choose it when you want a physics-based learning curve and independent foot control rather than an arcade combo system.
- Choose it only after checking controller requirements and the current status of the map hub on your platform.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2: an older editor with remix support
Documented editor features
Activision’s support instructions, dated September 3, 2020, describe an editor with quarter pipes, ramps, rails and other objects. They explain how players can publish parks for others, browse player creations and use social features such as upvotes and favorites.
Remixing changes the creator relationship
A creator can mark a park as remixable. Other players may then publish their own remixes instead of merely playing the original. This is a useful middle ground between a fixed developer level and a completely external mod: the original author establishes a starting point, while the community can alter and republish it.
Check the service before relying on it
The support page is historical documentation from 2020. It proves that the editor, browser and remix workflow existed, but it does not by itself confirm that every online function works on every current edition. Before purchasing for the sharing features, open the relevant platform listing and check whether publishing, browsing, ratings and remixing are still supported in your region.

When it makes sense today
- Choose it if you already own the game and want an earlier, documented park-sharing system.
- Choose it if remixing another creator’s layout is more important than the newer object and dynamic-content description associated with 3 + 4.
- Choose it only with the understanding that its publicly documented online workflow is older and needs current verification.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by the kind of creator or player you are
You want the easiest publish-and-play loop
Start with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4. Its documented workflow keeps construction, sharing, browsing and ratings inside one current package. You can concentrate on layout and goals instead of managing external files or tools.
You want the widest community-map focus
Start with Skater XL, provided you have the required controller and a platform with access to the map ecosystem you want. Its appeal is the combination of community locations and physics-based skating, not a conventional object-by-object editor.
You want to remix other people’s parks
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is the only title in this comparison with explicitly documented creator-enabled remixing. Verify that the online service still works for your edition before making that feature the deciding factor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You play on older hardware
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is announced for both current and previous console generations, including PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as newer systems. Actual purchase and online access terms remain platform- and region-dependent.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
You play on a keyboard
Do not assume Skater XL will suit you on PC: its listing says keyboard controls are unavailable and a compatible controller is required. The cited material does not establish equivalent controller requirements for the two Tony Hawk games, so check their current platform listings.
Practical checks before you buy or publish
- Verify the edition. A feature described for one console generation, PC storefront or remaster is not automatically present in another edition.
- Check online access. Publishing, browsing, ratings, favorites and mod hubs depend on live services and can change after launch.
- Check the region. Storefront availability, bundles, network requirements and access to user content may differ by country.
- Confirm input hardware. Skater XL’s PC requirement is explicit; do not substitute a keyboard for the listed compatible controller.
- Separate official content from community content. The 19 parks reported for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 are shipped parks, not a count of user creations. The three named Skater XL maps document community involvement, not a promise of unlimited current downloads.
- Save your design locally when possible. A published park or downloaded map can become unavailable if an account, service or creator package changes.
- Read current support notes. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 sharing instructions are from September 2020, and Skater XL’s community-map announcement is from 2020; both are useful history but not current uptime guarantees.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The documented facts support a clear recommendation by feature fit. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 has the most completely described built-in creation and sharing toolkit in this comparison. Skater XL has the strongest documented emphasis on community maps and a modding hub. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 has explicit remix instructions and an older browser-based sharing model.
They do not establish which game has the best physics, frame rate, moderation, map quality, loading time or long-term player population. Those factors can vary by hardware, update, region and the specific community content you choose. Treat the recommendations as a way to narrow your choice, then verify the current store and service information for your platform.
FAQs
Which game is best if I only care about making my own parks?
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is the best-supported fit because its Create-A-Park description combines a large object selection with dynamic content, custom goals, themes, sharing and ratings. The recommendation is based on documented tools, not a controlled play test.
Which game has the clearest community-made map support?
Skater XL. Its PC listing explicitly highlights community-created maps and a modding hub, and the developer has documented community artists contributing maps included with the 1.0 release.
Can I remix another player’s park?
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 explicitly documents remixing when the original creator marks a park remixable. Current availability should be checked because the instructions are dated 2020.
Does Skater XL work without a controller on PC?
The Steam listing says a compatible Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 controller is required and that keyboard controls are not available.
