You can still build a reliable offline library, but “single-player” does not always mean “never needs a connection.” The safest choices are games with a documented offline campaign, a DRM-free installer, or a launcher offline mode you can prepare before travel. This guide separates those levels, recommends games by genre and session length, and gives a precise pre-trip checklist so you know what will work without Wi-Fi.

What “offline” means in practice

Offline gaming has three different levels. Identify the level you need before buying, because a game can be playable alone yet still require an account, an initial license check, or a connection for updates.

Fully DRM-free and offline

A DRM-free edition provides installable files that can be downloaded, backed up and launched without a client continually checking a license. GOG’s published policy says, “The single-player mode has to be accessible offline,” and that the GOG GALAXY client is optional for accessing single-player offline mode. That policy is the clearest ownership standard in this list, but check the individual product page for exceptions such as multiplayer, cloud saves or other connected features.

Offline after one connected setup

Many Steam games fall into this category. You connect once, let the launcher finish updates, verify the files, start the game successfully, and then put Steam into Offline Mode. The campaign can work without a live connection afterward, but launcher updates, publisher DRM and periodic license checks vary by title. Do not assume that an offline launch will work indefinitely without testing it.

Offline campaign with optional online services

Some games keep their main campaign available while disconnected but disable achievements, cloud synchronization, multiplayer, events, leaderboards, account rewards or cosmetic catalogs. This is still a good fit for a flight or an unreliable connection if you understand what disappears. Don’t Starve, for example, remains playable offline; PC Gamer notes that there are no achievements to lose while offline.

Best offline-capable games at a glance

Game and edition Best for Offline position Important qualification
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015, CD Projekt Red) Long, story-driven open-world RPG Listed by PC Gamer as an offline choice on both Steam and GOG Steam requires the normal offline-mode preparation; verify the exact edition and any optional connected features
Hades (2020, Supergiant) Fast action and repeatable runs in short or long sessions PC Gamer says an internet connection does not prevent play Prepare the launcher before disconnecting; cloud and account services may be unavailable
Grim Dawn (2016, Crate Entertainment) Top-down action RPG without an online requirement for its core play Offline-capable A useful alternative to always-online action RPGs; confirm the storefront edition’s launch behavior
Divinity: Original Sin 2 (2017, Larian Studios) Deep, story-rich RPG and a long campaign Single-player campaign suited to offline preparation Use the same storefront and edition checks as any Steam title; multiplayer is a separate online feature
Don’t Starve (2013, Klei) Survival and self-contained sessions Works offline PC Gamer says it has no achievements to lose while offline
Heroes of Might & Magic 3 (1999, New World Computing) Turn-based strategy, city building and map clearing GOG’s complete edition is designed for offline ownership The complete GOG edition includes expansions that are absent from the HD edition elsewhere
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (2018, Square Enix) Party-based RPG with the Gambit system Suitable for an offline single-player campaign after storefront setup Check the platform and edition; account or synchronization services are not the campaign itself
Crusader Kings 3 (2020, Paradox) Complex grand strategy and an extended dynasty sandbox Core single-player play can be prepared for offline use Online services, cloud saves and any account-dependent features require a connection

Which game fits the way you play?

For a long narrative commitment

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are the strongest choices when you want a substantial campaign rather than disposable sessions. The Witcher 3 offers a story-driven open world; Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a deep, story-rich RPG. Install the edition you intend to keep, launch it once while connected, and test a save before leaving home.

For short sessions that can expand into a whole evening

Hades is a fast action roguelike built around repeatable runs. PC Gamer’s offline guide states that a connection does not prevent play, making it practical for commutes, flights and intermittent breaks. Its run-based structure also means you are not forced to remember a large open-world quest state after a long gap.

For an offline action-RPG alternative

Grim Dawn is a top-down action RPG that can be played offline. PC Gamer contrasts its offline capability with online-required games such as Path of Exile and Diablo 4. If your priority is clicking through combat and character progression without a server dependency, Grim Dawn is the more appropriate category of purchase.

For survival play

Don’t Starve works without a connection and is easy to pause between sessions. Its offline limitation is unusually clear: PC Gamer notes that there are no achievements to lose while disconnected. That matters if you want a self-contained survival game and do not care about account-linked milestones.

For turn-based strategy

Heroes of Might & Magic 3 combines city building, map clearing and randomized maps. The complete GOG edition includes expansions that are not included in the HD edition sold elsewhere, so edition choice changes the amount of content you receive. It is a strong fit for a laptop with limited connectivity because turns can be taken at your own pace.

For a party RPG with programmable combat behavior

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age uses the Gambit system, letting you configure how party members respond during battles. It suits players who want a lengthy RPG but prefer a more system-driven combat loop. Treat it as a normal offline campaign purchase: confirm the exact platform, perform the first launch while connected and test loading a save before travel.

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition - Xbox One
  • If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
  • Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
  • Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.

For a dynasty-length strategy sandbox

Crusader Kings 3 is the choice for players who want an extended grand-strategy campaign rather than a fixed story. Its appeal is the long-running dynasty sandbox, where each session can produce a different political situation. Plan on using offline mode for the core game and accept that cloud saves, multiplayer and account services will not be available without a connection.

Steam: prepare an offline library correctly

PC Gamer’s guide, updated 15 November 2024, notes that most launchers offer an offline mode but that many modern games require one connected launch first. SEGA’s official Steam instructions, updated 21 March 2025, describe the safest preparation sequence. Perform it for every game you plan to use away from the internet.

  1. Connect to the internet and sign in to Steam. Use the account that owns the game. Do not wait until you are at the airport or on the plane to discover that the account cannot authenticate.
  2. Install the game and finish every update. Open the game’s Downloads or Properties area and allow Steam to complete pending patches. PC Gamer recommends finishing updates before disconnecting; an unfinished update can leave the installation in a state that cannot launch offline.
  3. Verify the installation. In the Library, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before moving on.
  4. Launch the game while still connected. Reach the main menu, create or load a save, and close the game normally. This confirms that first-run setup, redistributables and any publisher launcher have completed their work.
  5. Switch Steam to offline mode. In the Steam desktop menu, choose Steam → Go Offline, then select the option to restart in Offline Mode if prompted. Start the game again while the computer is intentionally disconnected, and load the save you tested.
  6. Exit Steam normally before shutting down. SEGA warns that forcing Steam to close can erase stored offline data. Use Steam → Exit or the normal application close command; do not kill the process unless the program is genuinely frozen.

Repeat the disconnected launch after a reboot. A game that works only immediately after setup may still fail after the computer restarts, an operating-system update or a launcher change. Testing twice is more reliable than assuming the first success will persist.

GOG: the strongest ownership model for offline play

GOG’s 17 March 2022 policy statement says downloaded games can be kept and backed up, and that the GOG GALAXY client is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode. This means you can maintain installers on an external drive and reinstall without relying on a running client. The policy is a platform commitment, not a promise that every optional feature is available offline.

Before a trip, download the offline installers or installation files for the exact game and edition you purchased. Store a second copy on another drive, record where your saves are located, and launch the game directly from the installed files with the client closed. Check the product page for multiplayer requirements, cloud-save behavior, achievements and any expansion that may be sold separately. The GOG edition of Heroes of Might & Magic 3 is especially important to verify because its complete package includes expansions absent from the HD edition elsewhere.

What disappears when you disconnect?

Offline play concerns the campaign, not every service wrapped around it. Expect the following differences unless the product page explicitly says otherwise:

  • Cloud saves: New saves remain on the device and will not synchronize until you reconnect. Keep manual backups if the save matters.
  • Achievements: Some platforms queue achievements for later; others do not. Don’t Starve has no achievements to lose while offline, according to PC Gamer.
  • Multiplayer and co-op: A single-player campaign can work while multiplayer remains unavailable.
  • Live events and rotating content: Time-limited challenges, catalogs and server-driven rewards need a connection.
  • Account authentication: A publisher launcher may require a first sign-in even when the game itself is offline-capable.
  • Updates and hotfixes: You will not receive fixes while disconnected. Install updates before leaving and reconnect before reporting a problem.

Console ownership has extra account rules

Console storefronts use different licensing and sharing systems from PC launchers. A single-player label does not remove account requirements. PlayStation’s official Pragmata page describes it as a single-player action-adventure, lists a 17 April 2026 PS5 release date, says online features require a PlayStation account, and documents Console Sharing and Offline Play. The practical lesson is to enable the console’s sharing and offline setting on the owning account while connected, then test the game with the network disabled.

PlayStation’s current No Law page lists “Offline play enabled” and “1 player” for PS5, but its release date remains “to be determined.” Treat it as an announced example of the label, not as a presently purchasable recommendation. For any console game, verify the exact edition, account that bought it, primary-console or sharing status, required patches and whether the first launch has been completed online.

A travel-ready offline checklist

  • Choose the storefront and edition first; PC and console policies are not interchangeable.
  • Install the complete game, expansions and current updates while connected.
  • Launch once, reach the main menu and create a test save.
  • Close the game and launcher normally.
  • Disconnect Wi-Fi and wired networking, then reboot the device.
  • Start the game and load the test save with no connection.
  • For Steam, confirm the menu shows Offline Mode; for GOG, test launching without GOG GALAXY.
  • Keep a charger, enough storage and a backup of important saves.
  • Bring a second game that has already passed the same test in case a title-specific launcher fails.

Troubleshooting common offline failures

The game asks you to sign in again

Reconnect once, complete the launcher’s first-run authentication, and repeat the normal offline-mode procedure. If it still requests a sign-in every time, the title may use recurring DRM checks; do not rely on it for a trip until the publisher’s product page confirms the requirement.

Steam says files are missing or an update is pending

Reconnect, let the download finish, then run Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Launch once while connected and return to Steam → Go Offline. An offline session cannot repair an incomplete update.

Your saves are not visible

Check that you are using the same operating-system account and game edition used during testing. Cloud-only saves may not have been downloaded locally. Reconnect, allow synchronization to complete, then create a new local save and test again with the network disabled.

Offline data vanished after a forced shutdown

Repeat the setup and exit Steam normally. SEGA specifically warns that forcing Steam to close can erase stored offline data, so avoid power-button shutdowns while the launcher is open.

A console game is locked despite being single-player

Reconnect with the purchasing account, enable the platform’s Console Sharing and Offline Play or equivalent primary-device setting, install required updates, and launch once. Then disable networking and test from the account that will actually play.

How to choose with confidence

  1. Decide how much risk you accept. For the fewest license surprises, prefer a DRM-free installer and a game whose product page explicitly supports offline single-player mode. For a broader catalog, accept a one-time Steam setup and test it yourself.
  2. Match the game to your available time. Pick Hades for repeatable short runs, Don’t Starve for survival, Heroes 3 or Crusader Kings 3 for strategy, and The Witcher 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Final Fantasy XII for long RPG campaigns.
  3. Check the exact edition. Expansion bundles, HD remasters and platform ports can have different content and launch requirements. The Heroes 3 complete GOG edition is a concrete example of an edition difference that changes the included expansions.
  4. Separate campaign access from services. Decide whether losing cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer or live events is acceptable. If not, you need a connection even when the campaign itself is offline-capable.
  5. Perform a disconnected reboot test. This is the final decision point. If the game launches, loads a local save and plays with networking disabled, it is a realistic travel choice; if it does not, choose another title rather than hoping the problem will disappear later.

Prices, stock, regional availability and platform policies change, so check the current product page and the edition’s system requirements immediately before purchase. Offline capability is a property of the specific game, storefront and setup—not a guarantee attached to the words “single-player.”
